Listeners of Paint the Town Dead that love the show mention:This week we talk about some duels from early in Arkansas' American history. First up is Andrew Scott and Joseph Selden, two judges appointed to the state's Superior Court at the beginning of the territory's creation, who feuded after an incident during a card game. Then we have Henry Wharton Conway and Robert Crittenden, former political allies, turned bitter rivals.Afterwards we talk about Moon Knight, Northman, and more!https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/conway-crittenden-duel-7334/https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/robert-crittenden-2270/https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/henry-wharton-conway-4612/https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/the-family-political-dynasty-2666/https://www.swtimes.com/story/news/2015/06/17/history-minute-conway/24368251007/https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/scott-selden-duel-7830/https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/joseph-selden-8900/https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/andrew-horatio-scott-1758/https://www.eldoradonews.com/news/2022/may/11/history-minute-judge-scotts-rise-and-fall/Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Army vet, Joe Lee Richards Jr. is reported missing October 20, 2010. His truck is found, keys in the ignition along with other valuables still in the vehicle. In November, an anonymous tip is received, seemingly providing a break in the case. What is soon revealed goes well beyond Joe Lee Richards Jr, exposing a darker history. Afterwards, Andrew is catching up on Marvel films and providing big ideas for Caitlin's Easter. Caitlin gets her annual sunburn and listens to an Irish book that's probably about people with a similar propensity for sunburns and more!Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the small, northeastern Arkansas town of Bay, 90-year-old Lavinda Counce has not answered calls from her daughter. Lavinda's daughter arrives to the home, where Lavinda's vehicle is missing, along with Lavinda herself. A black bag is found in the home with strange items. A frantic search begins. Afterwards, we reach the finale of Harry Potter trivia with Caitlin.More importantly, Andrew learns that beeves is the plural of beef.Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.comhttps://www.fox16.com/news/man-shoots-and-kills-90-year-old-woman-says-he-was-inspired-by-the-walking-dead/https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2016/oct/06/confessed-to-killing-to-save-wife-child/https://www.nwaonline.com/news/2016/oct/01/dna-on-washcloth-tied-to-man-on-trial-2/https://arktimes.com/arkansas-blog/2016/10/07/jury-gives-life-sentence-in-kidnapping-and-slaying-of-90-year-old-womanhttps://katv.com/archive/update-lavinda-counce-case-now-being-investigated-as-a-homicidehttps://www.kait8.com/story/33291989/update-jury-ends-deliberations-for-tonight-in-lavinda-counce-murder-trial/https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2016/sep/30/zombie-test-kill-cited-at-murder-trial-/#/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week Caitlin tells us about Ray and Faye Copeland. Mostly Ray, who was something of a flimflamming con of a man. His family moved a lot during the Great Depression, and he made his way through life thieving, starting first with his own father's farm animals, then moving up to more and more elaborate schemes. It's been TWO YEARS of Paint the Town Dead! We talk a little about past episodes, Andrew gets in some wrestling talk despite everybody's wishes, and Caitlin loves Irish music and Kansas City!Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.comhttps://murderpedia.org/female.C/c/copeland-faye.htmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_and_Faye_Copelandhttps://www.investigationdiscovery.com/crimefeed/serial-killer/killer-couple-serial-killing-seniors-ray-faye-copeland-made-quilts-from-their-victims-clotheshttps://criminalminds.fandom.com/wiki/Ray_and_Faye_Copeland See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Marjorie "Greta" Mason was 22-year-old nurse at the Little Rock Air Force Base. In 1983, about two weeks after moving to Arkansas she was found murdered in Lonoke County. Eventually, the police locked in on Barry Lee Fairchild as the killer. While Fairchild confessed to the crime, it wasn't as open and shut of a case as one might expect. Afterwards we've got more Harry Potter quizzing for Caitlin, this time from the Order of the Phoenix. Andrew thinks you should all watch Murderville on Netflix.https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/barry-lee-fairchild-4586/https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/appellate-courts/F2/857/1204/115126/https://www.nytimes.com/1995/08/31/us/execution-of-retarded-man-is-fought.htmlhttps://casetext.com/case/fairchild-v-norris-2https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1994/01/09/in-arkansas-a-death-row-struggle-and-doubt/772108c9-1db5-4f2e-8ffe-0c512c842a1b/Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
After (another) short absence, we have returned! This week, Caitlin tells us about an illegal adoption scheme, featuring international human trafficking. This week we go all the way back to the 1800's, with the story of William Harvey Bruce, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War and moonshiner who ran into trouble with the law. Afterwards, we continue quizzing Caitlin, this time with the Prisoner of Azkaban. Andrew isn't thrilled with Boba Fett but loves Peacemaker and Youtube. Delvin "Buckii" Meadows worked multiple jobs to support his family, in part because his mother had died nine months before. Buckii was known as a mama's boy and dreamed of being famous rapper, uploading his own music videos. In April of 2017 he was killed in Blytheville, Arkansas. Caitlin recounts to story of what happened and who did it. Afterwards, we continue to grill Caitlin on her Harry Potter knowledge and more. Andrew tells us the story of James Alexander Cary, who served in the first World War before becoming a ranger with the National Park Service stationed in Hot Springs during Prohibition. Cary spent most of his time tracking down bootleggers and their liquor stashes in the mountains. In 1926, Cary arrested three men illegally transporting booze, one of whom threatened Cary, telling him that he would never be able to testify against the bootleggers. Afterwards we test Caitlin's Harry Potter trivia and it seems really difficult unlike that easy Star Wars quiz Andrew was given. This week we talk about Maud Crawford, a woman who passed the bar exam without having attended law school. Two men, Carter Elliot and Timmy Robertson are murdered in their home in Conway, Arkansas. Police have few leads and seemingly no suspects. That is until Elliot's ex-wife, Lark is kidnapped by her most recent ex-husband, Richard Conte. Lark is safely let go after a standoff with police, and what they find in Conte's cabin raises more questions.Afterwards, we talk Dune, Blade Runner 2049, The Song of Achilles, Scenes From A Marriage, and more.Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We return to Ft. Smith, Arkansas this week. We open with a man breaking into the home of an elderly woman, and then beating and raping her, but would survive. Several months later, another elderly woman is raped and murdered. The crimes are virtually identical, meaning that police have a serial rapist on their hands. We conclude this week's show with our spoiler-filled thoughts on Midnight Mass. For the first time ever, it's the second part of a two-part episode! It's also the finale. Last week we concluded with James Waybern "Red" Hall agreeing to confess to being the Arkansas Hitchhike Killer, along with the murder of his wife, Fay. We continue from there, going through Red's accounts on every murder, perhaps with some surprises along the way, and then go through his trial. In the post-show, Andrew finishes Adventure Time, is watching the What We Do in the Shadows TV series, and playing Metroid. Caitlin is listening to Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, and recounts her recent trip to the Arkansas Scottish Festival where she makes a dubious purchase for her nephew. The Arkansas Hitchhike Killer: James Waybern "Red" Hall: https://www.amazon.com/Arkansas-Hitchhike-Killer-James-Waybern/dp/1467148172Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For the first time ever, we're doing a two-parter! Don't tell Caitlin, she doesn't know. We're following the life and times and crimes of James Waybern "Red" Hall. Red suffered a traumatic head injury as a youngster and started to exhibit odd behavior. Eventually, Red outgrew his surroundings and started traveling America by hitchhiking. He even got married and had a child, but would still disappear at months at a time. What was he up to?The post-show is shorter than normal because we just talk about so much and so many. Andrew tries to stop being such a coward and starts the Resident Evil 2 remake. Caitlin ended Halloween because she already watched Hocus Pocus. Did she also summon real demons via D&D?No. Obviously not. In March of 2013, 14-year-old Sidney Nicole Randall went missing from her home in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Also missing was her stepfather, John. In November of 2014, two-year-old, Malik Drummond wandered away from his home in Searcy, Arkansas. A massive search ensued, involving over 400 volunteers. Call 501-404-3128 if you know something. We talk VERY briefly about COVID. Please get vaccinated. Andrew is the laziest person ever and got vaccinated. It's that easy.In the nonsense part, we talk a bit about THE Suicide Squad, Andrew forces us into talking about wrestling (the truest form of art) because CM Punk is BACK baybay! Caitlin loves Coke + Coffee while Andrew thinks it's vile. She also loves a new kit-kat and has news about glasses. Andrew can't relate as a person with eyes that natural selection shed its blessings upon.We talk more about volcanoes than you would think. Geology is NOT biology. Geology is also not paleontology. We talk more about that Rasputina song than anybody has ever talked.Splitgate = Halo + Portal and that seems neat.We freak out about noises. Marcel Wayne Williams grew up in a broken home, leading to a broken life. He went to adult prison when he was only 15 years old where he would suffer physical and sexual violence. In 1994, he would be released and then kidnap, rape, and murder Stacy Rae Errickson. Williams would become one of the four people that the state of Arkansas hastily executed when their supply of the drug midazolam was expiring. Caitlin then tells us her stories from Florida and Andrew goes back to his childhood.Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week we talk about one of the most interesting people we've covered, Bass Reeves. Born a slave, he eventually got his freedom by escaping to Indian Territory before the end of the American Civil War. Eventually he would move to Ft. Smith, Arkansas where he would become the first black deputy west of the Mississippi. During his time rounding up outlaws, he would go on to have a legendary career. Caitlin got engaged! She also tells us about some medical stuff and that time she got a sound bath and all of the great sleep she got. Andrew stopped depressing himself with dark films by playing a very hard video game which seem counterintuitive. He also tries to convince Caitlin to watch Garth Marenghi's Darkplace with poor results, but does get her interested in fantasy series Earthsea. We also discuss the Loki finale. Ted Throneberry left his job to head home and was never heard from again. When police investigated, they found that his wife, Anne, was also nowhere to be found. The last two people known to have been at the Throneberry home were two men who had recently moved into the mountains, Mark Holsombach and Billy Frazier, who lived without running water and electricity in a small shack. This week we cover the story of Dominic Whitaker, who went missing on July 4, 2010, but wasn't reported until five days later. Clues as to his whereabouts were few and far between. Whitaker didn't seem to be the type to go and run off, but he also wasn't involved in criminal activity or known for making enemies.Andrew mocks anti-vaxxers and Caitlin becomes a bigger nerd by playing complicated board games. We're back and late again! Was it Caitlin's fault yet again? No, but let's pretend it was because Andrew is the one writing this. Regardless, we've got a heck of a story for you this week. Larry Porter Chism threw away a shot at a nice career in law by also being into the illegal drug trade. Chism would be arrested and sentenced to 40 years in prison, but his story didn't end there. He and other prisoners were taken out for a bowling field trip for good behavior only to use this as an opportunity to escape! It only gets crazier from there. If you have any information, you can call in tips to 1-877-926-8332, and can also submit tips online to www.usmarshals.gov/tips.We talk about John Williams, Caitlin thinks she hates sitcoms, and Andrew accuses her of being an agent of the Sith. There's some talk about ear licking ASMR (no worries, no actual ASMR occurs in this show) and the weirdness of Twitch. June 1, 1979, Mary Lou York was murdered in her grocery store. The culprit was never in question, as York was able to identify her killer as Charles Laverne Singleton before she died. Singleton would be sentenced to death, but his time on death row would make headlines around the world. Afterwards, Caitlin tries to stump Andrew with THE HARDEST STAR WARS QUIZ EVER! We're a little late this week, but we're back. Caitlin tells us the tragic story of Jersey Bridgeman, who was abused by her father and stepmother, being chained to a dresser. Unfortunately, that's not how this story ends, as Jersey would go missing late one night.Later, Andrew yells at Caitlin about bananas.Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Email: PTTDPod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Nannette Krenzel went missing on May 12, 1995. She was last seen leaving a Chicago bar after an altercation with her boyfriend. The next morning she would be found dead. Was it the obvious answer that it was her boyfriend who had acted strangely afterwards, his brother who didn't like the two as a couple, or maybe a totally different out of left field culprit? The only way to find out is to listen to this week's episode of Paint the Town Dead. Or just use google, I guess. Was Lee truly guilty, or has Debra Reese's killer gone free this entire time?Afterwards Andrew talks about the new Star Wars series, The Bad Batch, and is then annoyed by the characters of Psych. Then Caitlin tells us about the unsolved murder of Leslie Haag. If you have any information on this case, call the Ft. Smith Police at (479) 709-5100.In the aftershow, Andrew talks about why Mortal Kombat is the ultimate video game, Caitlin is reading a book series called Throne of Glass, and then we get into our thoughts on the first two episodes of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. We travel back to 1976 in this week's episode of Paint the Town Dead! A single mother of three, Linda Edwards found work with the Garland County Sheriff's Department. Around this time she had also began affair with a Hot Springs police officer named Timothy Abernathy. The two had many heated arguments and he was the last person to see Edwards before she disappeared. Abernathy was the prime suspect, but did he make her vanish? Yeah, probably. There's not a Marvel show for us to yak about this week but we found something even better: Cults! Mostly, it's about Scientology. Andrew has continued down the rabbit hole from last week and he and Caitlin have just so much and so many words to share on the subject. Maurice Clemmons began his run-ins with the law from a young age, bringing a gun to school. He was sentenced to 108 years for his many crimes. He would have his sentence reduced and be let out on parole, hoping to turn his life around, but old habits die hard. Andrew demands that chili be considered a soup, Caitlin is listening to a book that is definitely not sexy, and the amount of Star Wars talk is shockingly light this week. The crew discusses the WandaVision finale. Helen’s father was murdered right before her eyes, and her mother taken and beaten. Helen Ruth Spence then decided to take matters into her own hands. It’s a lengthy, wild story, so there’s not a whole lot of discussion after the fact. The signs of Mark Alan Smith's violent future were apparent from a young age, strangling a young girl, and stabbing a boy before he was even 10 years old. Smith's crimes would span from West Germany to Illinois, and Arkansas. Caitlin still hasn't watched Mandalorian. Boo and hiss to her. Andrew's phone conspires against him when trying to get groceries. Caitlin watched an orchestra while Andrew just fell further into Star Wars and Gravity Falls. Y'know, his usual. Young Kristin Laurite is found dead at a rest stop in Morrilton, Arkansas. She had stopped at a rest stop while road tripping from New Jersey to her new home in California. The clues are few, but DNA may hold the answers to her murder, and those of others. Andrew is still watching Mandalorian stuff, including a behind-the-scenes show about it because he's a big old nerd. Caitlin watches a new Christmas movie (and loves it) along with a podcast about the murders of Gratfeul Dead fans. Then, we discuss our favorite Thanksgiving foods, which suspiciously seems like a way for Caitlin to dunk on her mother's cooking. https://delanirbartlette.medium.com/ronald-ward-jr-and-the-murder-of-kristin-laurite-1e77b24E42ahttp://www.stanislaus-da.org/pdf/news/2008/press-release-ward-09-23-2008.pdf https://missoulian.com/news/state-and-regional/california-builds-murder-case-against-montana-killer-ronald-james-ward/article_0da6ccd5-fb9f-58d9-9016-11ce45ded8eb.htmlFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pttdpod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paintthetowndead/Twitter: https://twitter.com/PTTDpod See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
