We're back! For our newest episode Pete and Dan are joined by Aparna Verna, the author of the breakout fantasy novel The Phoenix King, published by Orbit. Originally Aparna was invited onto the show to talk about Neil Gaiman's 1996 hit novel and TV show Neverwhere, but in light of the recent allegations against Gaiman, we've decided not to release that episode, though we may do so in the future as events play out.In this interview we talk to Aparna about how the Phoenix King came to be, about its evolution, its fusion of western fantasy structures and Indian mythological frameworks, and it crosses romance, adventure and fantasy to create a new angle on centuries-old storytelling conventions. We talk about Aparna's excellent social media game, one of the contributing factors to her book's success, and her successful leveraging of crowdfunding to self-publish the original novel on which The Phoenix King is based. Aparna Verma was born in Rajasthan, India, and grew up in the United States. She graduated from Stanford University with Honors in the Arts and a B.A. in English. In 2021, she self-published The Boy with Fire, which quickly went viral on TikTok, and was later republished by Orbit Books as The Phoenix King in 2023.When she is not writing, Aparna likes to lift heavy (arm days are her favorite), dance to Bollywood music, and find cozy cafes to read myths from ancient worlds. You can connect with Aparna on TikTok at @aparnawrites, and Twitter and Instagram at @spirited_gal.
Sophmoric, misogynistic, violent, and incredibly influential, this Canadian animated feature based on the science fiction magazine and featuring comedians from SCTV is equal parts terrible and awesome, and really brings out our inner teenage dirtbags. Also, we look at Richard Corben's original animated short Neverwhere, the basis for the comic book character Den and his segment of the film. Starring John Candy, Rodger Bumpass, Jackie Burroughs, Joe Flaherty, Don Francks, Eugene Levy, Alice Playten, Harold Ramis, and more. Written by Daniel Goldberg and Len Blum. Directed by Gerald Potterton. Based on original stories by Richard Corben, Angus McKie, Dan O'Bannon, and a really unimpressed and uncredited Jean "Moebius" Giraud.

Other theater credits: Hunter in Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, Chick in Crimes of the Heart; Red Monkey Theater Group, Sally in Tally's Folly; Bagaduce Theater, and Flannery in Mrs. Schrodinger's Cat; NYC Fringe Festival. She holds a BFA in Acting from Tisch, NYU and a MA Educational Theater from Steinhardt, NYU. We talk about her one-woman show, becoming an actor, method acting, calling up emotions on stage, agoraphobia, the mechanics of putting on a play and the people involved, cultivating a creative mind, living in New York City, and Amelia recites a scene from the play, which is HILLARIOUS! Cezar Capacle is a Brazilian Game Designer, author of the PUSH SRD, Midnight Melodies, Oneironaut, and so so many more. Cezar is a Game Artist, always exploring new ideas, new frontiers and showing us what RPGs can do. He has released more than 20 games, ranging from games you play while you're asleep to tender games about saying goodbye, to tower defense games in which you're a cow defending your farm from a zombie attack. I am always impressed by how prolific, creative and well made Cezar's games are. And the range of themes, mechanics, and experiences these games provide are incredibly impressive. Cezar navigates all styles of play, from classic adventure games, to story focused ones, and even abstract or tactical games. On this episode we talked mainly about two of his games: Midnight Melodies and Oneironaut. Midnight Melodies is a solo RPG in which you play as a jazz pianist who discovers they're immune to the touch of the Grim Reaper. Instead of claiming your life, the Reaper recruits you for the Department of Unauthorized Deaths. Each night, after your performance at the club, you find a scrap of paper in your tip jar - the name of someone taken without consent. You must unravel the mystery of these unauthorized deaths, using your newfound supernatural talents, and perform an eerie harmony to report your findings to the Reaper before sunrise. Oneironaut is a solo role-playing game in which you take on the role of an Ahiag̃ soldier in a fight against Yurupari for control over the dream world. Visit fantastic places and shape the world as you wish. Using lucid dreaming techniques, this game allows you to develop the ability to control your dreams and fulfill Ahiag̃'s missions during your sleep. Embark on this dreamlike journey and discover things you never thought you would be able to do. But we talked about a lot more than game and game design. We talked about being weird, accepting yourself, our creative processes, his journey as a game designer, minimalist life style, how criticism affect us. We get personal talking about how the loss of a loved one made him reevaluate his life, his choices and led him to the place his is today. We talked about religion, Catholicism, Buddhism, stoicism, and A LOT MORE! This is a juice episode and I really hope y'all enjoy it! Let's get weird with Cezar Capacle! Check out Cezar's work! In Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman set out to write a book that would do for adults what the books he had loved when he was younger had done for him as a kid. A favorite of Tony's, and a first-read for Tom, Neverwhere threads the line between dark fantasy and action/adventure, with a liberal sprinkling of dry wit.TTYpodcast.comThumbingthroughyesterday.com

Hello Kindred Spirits! Thanks for joining us here in the Show Notes. Thank you for your constant support! In this episode, you can very obviously hear an example of "pregnancy brain" from Brooke as she expresses a lot of confusion regarding whether or not she already talked about The Guide by Peter Heller. It's funny because the literal episode before this one is titled "Don't Pair The Guide with Station Eleven" So obviously...she did. Please forgive her. It is not an easygoing task creating life. Deep tech founders are either technically gifted or great at building a business. But it's seldom both, at least in the beginning. So, what should venture investors pay attention to when we're choosing founders in these disruptive technologies? Greg Castle is Founder and Managing Director at Anorak Ventures, a firm that invests in early-stage deep tech startups. An entrepreneur and corporate marketer turned VC, Greg has invested in 120 companies, including Oculus, Flexport and Mux. On this episode of Boost VC, Greg joins us to explore how his view of venture investing has changed since he wrote his first check, explaining what he looks for in a founder and how he evaluates deep tech startups differently. Greg shares his mixed feelings about the VR market right now and how he benefits from having a partner to engage in conviction-based decision-making. Like sands through the hourglass so are the episodes of the podcast. So despite the terrible intro that doesn't have anything to do with The Sandman or Neil Gaiman be happy with the fact that it implies that this will all end at some point. When you think about it, that's pretty goth of us, so y'know what, sit back and listen to our quite un-goth chat with Nate about very goth topics. Swamp Thing Conspiracy WriterGet M A D with Chris Graves 4-14-2023 Jonathan VankinGM #39On this episode of "Get M.A.D." I had the great opportunity to talk with Mr. Jonathan Vankin!JONATHAN VANKIN is a journalist, author, comic book writer, and screenwriter. His work has received numerous awards and honors, and his books have been translated into nearly 20 languages. He has won three New England Press Association awards. That book and its follow-up, the Greatest Conspiracies series co-authored with John Whalen, went on to become the most influential books on the subject and led to Vankin's numerous media appearances on such networks as CNN, CNBC, FOX, the BBC, and CBC as well as hundreds of radio stations. In 2005, he published The World's Greatest Conspiracies, the fifth installment in the Greatest Conspiracies franchise. He also wrote the graphic novels Tokyo Days, Bangkok Nights, and (with Arnold Pander) Tasty Bullet. Subsequently, he spent time as a sportswriter/editor at The Daily Yomiuri in Tokyo, Japan. His writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wired, Salon, L.A. Weekly, and numerous others. He was commissioned by French production company Des Films to pen the screenplay Dragon's Fin Soup, which he completed with Takashi Miike (Audition, 13 Assassins) attached to direct. He has also taught creative writing to incarcerated youth in the Los Angeles area as part of the Spoken Interludes Next program, which he counts as perhaps the most memorable experience of his career.Mr. Vankin's social media & websites:https://twitter.com/jonvankinhttps://www.facebook.com/jvankinhttp://www.jonathanvankin.net/http://www.foreverdusty.com/https://web.archive.org/web/20050303171340/http://www.conspire.com/https://web.archive.org/web/20170708184136/http://comicbookdb.com/creator.php?ID=401https://www.amazon.com/stores/Jonathan-Vankin/author/B000AP862E?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=truehttps://www.amazon.com/Conspiracies-Cover-Ups-Crimes-Jonathan-Vankin/dp/1881532097/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=kqRrz&content-id=amzn1.sym.22f5776b-4878-4918-9222-7bb79ff649f4&pf_rd_p=22f5776b-4878-4918-9222-7bb79ff649f4&pf_rd_r=133-0171567-7502653&pd_rd_wg=YUv3z&pd_rd_r=d0461810-5bdc-4d2e-ac27-072ac1bedc7c&ref_=aufs_ap_sc_dskhttps://www.amazon.com/Brightest-Day-Aftermath-Search-Swamp/dp/B00586L2YYHarvey Pekar Collection on Letterman, 1986-1994https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biOodnioY8cEverything Chris Graves can be found on his Linktree: https://linktr.ee/cgravesmassguyPayPal:http://paypal.me/SirhcSevargGet Mad Archives:https://ochelli.com/category/get-m-a-d-with-chris-graves/ Ochelli Link Treehttps://linktr.ee/chuckochelliYOUR HELP TO KEEP US GOING IS CRITICAL: https://ochelli.com/donate/Uncle – Age of Transitions – T-shirts Aaron's Book and MORE: https://theageoftransitions.com/category/support-the-podcasts/Do you have a project, business, or message To PromoteBe Heard on The Ochelli Effect - The Age of Transitions - Get M A D with Chris Graves - Uncle The Podcast or The Whole Network. Hey guys! Welcome back!!! As always, it's a delight to know you're listening to us ramble on (...and on, and on...) about life and the books that we're into at the moment! We loved sitting down and recording this episode! It was so nice to sit down and just chat our normal chat and give you all a reading UPDATE! There are a few things we wanted to jot down here for you. 1. Brooke never said the company that she bought the wool yarn from to make her co-worker a sweater! The wool she got is from Wool And The Gang. She bought their "Crazy Sexy Wool" in "Dusty Denim" & "Cosmic Navy". It's so soft! 2. Be on the lookout for some upcoming cutesy pictures of the sweater that Becky crocheted Brooke! & 3. There is no voting for this next book club choice, unfortunately! We have decided to read Twilight by Stephanie Meyer for our next book club! Even though there was no voting, we still hope you'll find yourself a copy and read along with us! It's bound to be a fun one. But don't worry, we plan on having many more book club reads and you will almost always be allowed to have a vote! Another week, another episode in our series of Octobrish delights... this time, we are returning to our bookshelves to pull some inspirational fiction for the more uncanny, eerie, and unsettling side of Changeling: the Dreaming. We're going through 10(-ish) books and story collections that keep us up at night, and seeing how we can translate that into the themes and moods of the game. (This was also kind of an unexpected topic, so we had very little time to prepare, and it shows—apologies!) Some links to our presences elsewhere in the digital realm: Discord: https://discord.gg/SAryjXGm5j Email: podcast@changelingthepodcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082973960699 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/changelingthepodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/changelingcast ... the list (this time) Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber — One of the earlier collections that adapt and modernize fairy tales, Carter's work takes a decidedly feminist approach. Her work was influential on many of the fantasy authors who followed her, and being a literary theorist, she knew what she was about when it came to crafting a darkly fantastic story.Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves — It's a piecemeal text drawing on numerous traditions and formats and histories. It's a retelling of the myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. It's an experiment in surrealist writing. It's a horror story about a house and the family whose children disappear within it. Danielewski's work is always challenging, but the elegant precision of this novel is matched only by the madness lurking under the surface. There is a whole community of die-hard fans who discuss every little connection, hint, and reference (and there are thousands), if you feel like vanishing into an abyss of your own. Neil Gaiman, Coraline — We could have easily gone with The Ocean at the End of the Lane or Mr. Punch or any number of other Gaiman yarns, but this one seemed the Right One to talk about at the intersection of Changeling and creepy-style horror. It's a bit more Lost than Dreaming, maybe, but a pitch-perfect dark faerie tale for modern times. Check out the publisher's page for more information (or go watch the trailer for the film) (or find more about the musical, or the opera, or...)E.T.A. Hoffmann, "The Sandman" and other stories — Hoffmann is a landmark figure in the history of the German Romantic movement, known for his creepy and unsettling literary fairy tales. Freud discussed this tale at length in his essay on the "uncanny," which opens our episode; the text of that essay is freely available here from MIT.Marlon James, Black Leopard, Red Wolf — The most recent entry on this list is also the most epic, perhaps. It's set against the backdrop of African folklore, features a party of misfits in search of a missing boy, and has some of the most nightmarish tableaux ever set to paper in a fantasy novel. It's delightfully queer, shamelessly vulgar, and occasionally shockingly gory... so it fits our brief perfectly for this episode. Read Gautam Bhatia's excellent review in Strange Horizons for more.Stephen King, Misery — This novel fits more into the Autumn People and/or Ravaging and/or Autumn Sidhe Frailty realm of horror, since there are few overt supernatural elements in it. But it's definitely a good example of how even the mundane can become horrific without warning. Again, we could have chosen any number of King writings... except that neither of us has read enough to really make a thorough study of his bibliography, so this one will have to do.China Miéville, King Rat — One part Neverwhere, one part American Gods (though before it was written); one part Changeling, one part Ratkin. Miéville's debut novel explores the gritty underground of London and what one finds there, through the lens of a protagonist that discovers his connection to a pantheon of vermin-gods. It's very 90s with its aesthetics, and centers on solving a murder, and what could be more classic White Wolf than that?Edgar Allen Poe, "The Telltale Heart" and other stories — Not long after Hoffmann's heyday, Poe "invented" the American horror story with his elaborate Gothic treatments of madness, crimes of passion, guilt, and uncertain realities. His work is public domain at this point, so you can read any and all of it through Wikisource, if you've a mind to.William Shakespeare, Macbeth — Who doesn't know a thing or two at this point about the Scottish play? Besides being an epic story that combines political intrigue, high drama, and classical tragedy, the supernatural lurks on the fringes of the narrative as a force of chaos. The tale's mutability is demonstrated by the wide range of adaptations out there—including the recent one starring Denzel Washington—but Pooka would officially like to recommend the clunky madcap offering that is Scotland, PA, where the action is transposed to a suburban fast food joint in the 70s.Patrick Süskind, Perfume — A modern classic that doesn't get much attention on this side of the Atlantic, this "story of a murderer" begins with a simple conceit: a protagonist with a superhuman sense of smell, yet no scent of his own. He becomes a master perfumer, and cultivates an obsession with creating the perfect perfume for himself out of the most beautiful aroma he's encountered—that of teenage virgins. It's a lurid and gruesome work, more clinical than gratuitous, set against the backdrop of pre-revolutionary France. Check out the trailer of the so-so film for an idea of that adaptation; apparently there was a Netflix adaptation recently too? Either way, it's good material for a particularly nasty bogie. Honorable mentions go to Clive Barker and H.P. Lovecraft, but we didn't really have the space to get deeply into them. Another time, perhaps...! ... your hosts Josh Hillerup (any pronoun) has never danced with the devil in the pale moonlight, but once patty-caked with a psychopomp in the murky dusk, which is almost the same thing? Pooka G (any pronoun/they) doesn't miss nightmares about velociraptors and whatnot, but by the same token could do without these anxiety dreams about being awkward at garden parties. 'I recognize terror as the finest emotion and so I will try to terrorize the reader. But if I find that I cannot terrify, I will try to horrify, and if I find that I cannot horrify, I'll go for the gross-out. I'm not proud." —Stephen King

Peter gives Neil Gaiman another shot after being disappointed over a decade earlier and Matt discusses author as celebrity. It's never a good idea to write off an author on one book and so Matt convinced Peter to give Neil Gaiman another shot. On this episode we're discussing Neil Gaiman's debut novel, Neverwhere. A novel rich in depth, character, and plot. Finally, we discuss the concept of celebrity author. An all-around fun episode. Enjoy! Thanks for joining us! This week is a bit of a breather: we're talking about ten books that inspire us for Changeling: the Dreaming. The show notes are therefore pretty straightforward, as we'll just have the list below with a few notes. (You are encouraged to find, borrow, or purchase these books at a library or bookstore, for we will not be linking to a certain bookselling megacorp on this post.) In a more general sense, we're opening a conversation here about media as inspiration; we anticipate talking about another stack of books in the future, but also graphic novels, television, film, even artwork. Given that the game is to some extent about inspiration and story, it seems fitting to think about more than just "books about faeries." How can players and STs get the most out of the media they encounter for their games? What qualifies as a narrative that has something to do with Glamour and Banality, or the other themes of the game? Things to consider for future iterations of this series of episodes... (Also, we threw in three honorable mentions at the end, because stopping at ten books just wasn't going to happen.) the list Emma Bull, War for the Oaks — Blurb: "Eddi McCandry sings rock and roll. But her boyfriend just dumped her, her band just broke up, and life could hardly be worse. Then, walking home through downtown Minneapolis on a dark night, she finds herself drafted into an invisible war between the faerie folk. Now, more than her own survival is at risk—and her own preferences, musical and personal, are very much beside the point." There was some talk long ago about adapting it for film (to the point that a low-budget trailer got made), but alas, it has not yet come to be...John Crowley, Little, Big; or, the Fairies' Parliament — A truly magnificent 25th anniversary edition just came out...which actually makes it a 40th anniversary edition, so how's that for a publishing delay? But anyway, even though that version is frighteningly expensive, you can at least get a sense for the book by reading the first couple chapters here: https://littlebig25.com/.Charles de Lint, The Wild Wood — Blurb: "A young artist returns to her cabin in the deep woods of Canada to concentrate on her illustrations. But somehow, strange and beautiful creatures are slipping into her drawings and sketches. The world of Faerie is reaching out to her for help--and she may be its last chance for survival." See an example of the Brian Froud art paired with this book below (used for the cover, in fact).Cory Doctorow, Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town — This one is freely available for download, presumably because Doctorow is a big proponent of Creative Commons and whatnot: https://craphound.com/category/someone/Joanne M. Harris, Honeycomb — Author's website with some Q&A and other information: http://www.joanne-harris.co.uk/honeycomb/Neil Gaiman, Neverwhere — Multimedia moment: Neverwhere was actually a TV series first, some of which you can watch for free because some kind soul has put it online (start with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKlsXquUKdA). So technically the novel is a novelization, and we might cover this again for when we talk about TV... but then, it's also been made into a stage play, and a radio drama, and a graphic novel. Many options for your media-consumer pleasure. Seanan McGuire, the October Daye series — Author's website: https://seananmcguire.com/toby.php; you can check out her other series as well here.Terry Pratchett, Hogfather (and many other Discworld novels besides) — Another one with a TV adaptation, featuring Ian Richardson and Michelle Dockery (of Downton Abbey fame), which you can fairly easily watch online as well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoWifSyA9NQ). Salman Rushdie, Haroun and the Sea of Stories — A brief excerpt: "So Iff the water genie told Haroun about the Ocean of the Stream of Stories, and even though he was full of a sense of hopelessness and failure the magic of the Ocean began to have an effect on Haroun. He looked into the water and saw that it was made up of a thousand thousand thousand and one different currents, each one a different colour, weaving in and out of one another like a liquid tapestry of breathtaking complexity; and Iff explained that these were the Streams of Story, that each coloured strand represented and contained a single tale. Different parts of the Ocean contained different sorts of stories, and as all the stories that had ever been told and many that were still in the process of being invented could be found here, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was in fact the biggest library in the universe. And because the stories were held here in fluid form, they retained the ability to change, to become new versions of themselves, to join up with other stories and so become yet other stories; so that unlike a library of books, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was much more than a storeroom of yarns. It was not dead, but alive."Bill Watterson, any or all of the Calvin and Hobbes books — It almost seems a travesty to direct you to an internet version of the comic, but if you haven't come across the strip before, allowances must be made... you can read some of the old daily strips at https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes. ... your hosts Josh Hillerup (any pronoun) keeps finding library cards between the cushions, in their pockets, on buses, on trains, behind other people's ears... something mysterious is clearly afoot. Pooka G (any pronoun/they) once ate 38 pages of Finnegan's Wake, binding and all, to see what would happen, and woke up two days later drenched with absinthe in the doorway of a downtown Tarrytown taxidermy shop. ... Spooky tour guide turned financial journalist Felicity Hannah wants to know why being scared can feel so good. Why do we frighten ourselves for fun? Why do we love scary stories and terrifying TV? She asks Neil Gaiman, author of Coraline, The Graveyard Book, Neverwhere and The Sandman – a storyteller who knows all about the power of fear to fascinate and delight us. Felicity and Neil talk about what scares them the most, when fear loses its thrill, and, of course, ‘horror for four year olds'. Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Sarah Goodman.

Summary: Welcome to our first LoveFest! Today, Holly and Devin discuss myriad works from one of their favorite authors, Neil Gaiman. They first discuss books they've both read, sharing key themes and impacts the books made. Then, they each share a Gaiman book they've read the other hasn't experienced yet. Overall, Gaiman unites Holly and Devin because of how he approaches humanity in his books - allowing each character to be flawed, to self-discover a new path, and to fight physical manifestations of the metaphorical demons we all battle. Topics Discussed: Books in Common (2:28): Neverwhere: The first Gaiman book both Holly and Devin ever read, this introduction into Gaiman's style and his techniques of world-building ignited a desire in both hosts to dive in more deeply to other Gaiman works. Protagonist Richard Mayhew finds himself in London Below, and discovers through a series of creepy and challenging events that he is more than just a young boring businessman. The Graveyard Book: Inspired by The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, this book follows a boy who is raised in a graveyard by ghosts. Even though the novel opens with the murder of three people, even Devin wasn't deterred because of Gaiman's wit and care for all his characters and the assurance that good wins in the end. Good Omens: By far their favorite Gaiman book of all time, this book and the accompanying Amazon Prime show by the same name are staples for Holly and Devin; the dynamic between angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley actually inspired the structure of Hearts & Daggers itself. Co-authored with Terry Pratchett, this book can be summed up well by Aziraphale's comment to Adam, the Antichrist - “I was scared that you'd be hell incarnate. I hoped you'd be heaven incarnate. But you're not either of those things; you're much better. You're human incarnate.” Separate Experiences (27:53): Devin - American Gods: This brick of a book follows Shadow, an ex-convict who is released from prison early when his wife is killed in a car accident alongside his best friend, with whom she had been having an affair. From there, Shadow is contracted as a bodyguard for Mr. Wednesday, a mysterious mafioso who sends Shadow all over America, to run into dozens of modern gods - a leprechaun, Easter, Whiskey jack, Johnny Appleseed, and more. Gaiman, while British, does a fantastic rendering of the expansiveness, the vapidness, and the hunger of American culture and the gods we worship today. Holly - The Sandman Series: Gaiman worked at DC Comics for some time, where he conceived of a series that tells the tale of the ageless, anthropomorphic personification of Dream, his sister, Death (one of Holly's personal favorites) and the other five Endless. The series began in 1989 and ran through 1996, but will be coming to Netflix as a series this year! Holly loved the creativity and execution of the artwork and plot in the Sandman series, and recommends it to comics lovers and the uninitiated alike. Gaiman Overall (39:14): Holly and Devin could have talked about Neil Gaiman for hours. To conclude, though, they have a deep love for Gaiman and would read anything he writes, even a grocery list. While many of his books walk the line between humor and terror, his works are accessible even to folks like Devin who normally shy away from scary stories. Gaiman uses his monsters to teach us all about being brave, facing our fears, and standing for what we believe in despite pressure to do otherwise. Hot On the Shelf (43:21): Holly: The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn Devin: Greedy by Jen Winston What's Making Our Hearts Race (45:42): Holly: Elizabeth Holmes (journalist) Devin: Minx on HBO Max Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.
