Debra Gaskill is the former managing editor of the Washington Court House (Ohio) Record-Herald.  She was an award-winning journalist for more than 20 years, writing for a number of Ohio newspapers covering the cops and courts beat, and the Associated Press, covering any stories thrown her way. During her tenure at the Record-Herald, the paper earned two Associated Press General Excellence awards. Gaskill brings her knowledge of newspapers to her Jubilant Falls series. The bools 'Barn Burner' (2009), 'The Major's Wife' (2010), 'Lethal Little Lies' (2013), 'Murder on the Lunatic Fringe' (2014) and 'Death of A High Maintenance Blonde' (2014) all center around crimes committed in the fictional small town Jubilant Falls, Ohio, and often center around the damage family secrets can do. 'The Major's Wife' received honorable mention in the 2011 Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards and 'Barn Burner' was a finalist for the Silver Falchion Award at Killer Nashville.  Her novel, 'Counterfeit Life' (2020) returns tangentially to Jubilant Falls, and those familiar characters. Her Fracktown Gumshoe series  features retired cop turned private investigator Niccolo Fitzhugh.The series brings her cops and courts experience together in a mystery that "creates complex characters and places them in real settings" according to customer reviews on Amazon.com.  Gaskill has an associates degree in liberal arts from Thomas Nelson Community College (now Virginia Peninsula Community College) in Hampton, Va., a bachelor's degree in English and journalism from Wittenberg University and a master of fine arts in creative writing from Antioch University, Yellow Springs. She and her husband Greg, a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, have two children and three grandchildren. They raise llamas and alpacas on their farm in Enon, Ohio. A tractor-trailer carrying paper products caught fire on the Varina-Enon Bridge in Eastern Henrico County Monday morning, snarling traffic and closing southbound travel lanes on I-295 at mile marker 18.7. The crash was reported at about 8:15 a.m., according to Virginia State Police. The driver was not injured, but charges are pending the result of an investigation. John Schmersal in conversation with David Eastaugh https://3ra1n1ac.com/ Schmersal was originally in the band Brainiac and formed Enon (named after the village in Ohio, which is close to Schmersal's hometown of Dayton) with Lee and Calhoon following the death of Brainiac's singer Timmy Taylor and their subsequent disbandment. After Brainiac, Schmersal made a solo album under the name John Stuart Mill. Rick Lee and Steve Calhoon were both previous members of the band Skeleton Key, a befriended band Brainiac had toured with. Together they formed Enon. Lee created a number of percussion sounds for the band playing a "junk kit" including a Radio Flyer wagon, propane tank, and old hubcaps.

After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them and baptised. John also was baptising in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full. He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness. He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys the Son won't see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

The Virginia Department of Transportation will begin a two-year bridge rehabilitation project across the Varina-Enon Bridge on I-295 to enhance the life cycle of the bridge. During the life of the project, alternating lane closures will be implemented on northbound and southbound lanes at various times. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 12, the right lane of I-295 northbound will be closed permanently until early Spring 2024. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Harding's new novel “This Other Eden” is inspired by the true story of Malaga Island, an isolated island off the coast of Maine that became one of the first racially integrated towns in the Northeast. Harding is the author of “Tinkers” and “Enon.”

Paul Harding won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for Tinkers, ''an astringent meditation on loss, family ties, and the presence of the past'' (The Guardian) in which a dying elderly man wanders through the rooms of his life's large and quiet moments. He is also the author of the novel Enon and is an accomplished musician. The director of the MFA in Creative Writing & Literature at Stony Brook University, Harding is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize. Based on the true story of one of the first integrated towns in the Northeast, This Other Eden tells the multigenerational story of an isolated island community off the coast of Maine. Referred to by Yiyun Li as ''one of the most unique voices in American literature,'' Hanna Pylväinen is the author of the Whiting Award-winning debut novel We Sinners, the story of a devout but fragmented Midwestern family. A faculty member of Warren Wilson College's MFA writing program, she has earned fellowships from Princeton University's Lewis Center for the Arts and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, among others. Her work has been published in numerous periodicals, including Harper's Magazine, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. In The End of Drum-Time, Pylväinen weaves the love story of a reindeer herder and a minister's daughter on the remote 19th century Scandinavian tundra. (recorded 2/23/2023)

Debra Gaskill is the former managing editor of the Washington Court House (Ohio) Record Herald.  She was an award-winning journalist for more than 20 years, writing for a number of Ohio newspapers covering the cops and courts beat, and the Associated Press, covering any stories thrown her way. During her tenure at the Record-Herald,  the paper earned two Associated Press General Excellence awards. Gaskill brings her knowledge of newspapers to her Jubilant Falls series. The mysteries 'Barn Burner' (2009), 'The Major's Wife' (2010), 'Lethal Little Lies' (2013), 'Murder on the Lunatic Fringe' (2014) and 'Death of A High Maintenance Blonde' (2014) all center around crimes committed in the fictional small town Jubilant Falls, Ohio, and often center around the damage family secrets can do. 'The Major's Wife' received honorable mention in the 2011 Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards and 'Barn Burner' was a finalist for the Silver Falchion Award at Killer Nashville.  Her latest novel, 'Counterfeit Life' (2020) returns, at least tangentially, to Jubilant Falls, and those familiar characters. Her private detective novel 'Call Fitz' (2015), featuring the private investigator Niccolo Fitzhugh, was named 'Best Thriller' at the Queen of the West Book Bash in Cincinnati. The series brings her cops and courts experience together in a mystery that "creates complex characters and places them in real settings" according to customer reviews on Amazon.com.  By 2016, the series included two more books, 'Holy Fitz' and 'Love Fitz' and was named best thriller series at Queen of the West Book Bash. In 2018, the fourth book in the Fracktown Gumshoe series, Kissing Fitz, was awarded the Silver Falchion Best Suspense award at Killer Nashville. The award was presented to her by internationally known author Anne Perry. The fifth Fracktown Gumshoe mystery , Toxic Fitz, was released in late 2018 and also a Silver Falchion finalist. The sixth book in the Fracktown Gumshoe  series, Finding Fitz, was released in late 2020. Gaskill has an associates degree in liberal arts from Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Va., a bachelor's degree in English and journalism from Wittenberg University and a master of fine arts in creative writing from Antioch University, Yellow Springs. She and her husband Greg, a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, have two children and three grandchildren. They raise llamas and alpacas on their farm in Enon, Ohio. Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enOn the morning of July 7, federal agents arrested Ivan Safronov, a longtime journalist who recently took a job as a communications adviser to Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin. Safronov is being charged with treason and faces up to 20 years in prison.  His lawyers have been granted limited access to the case file compiled by the Federal Security Service, which indicates that Safronov is suspected of selling secret information to Czech intelligence agents about Russian military cooperation with an unnamed African Middle Eastern country. The Czechs supposedly recruited him in 2012 and he allegedly sent them the data over the Internet five years later in 2017. Outside the FSB's headquarters in Lubyanka Square, during Safronov's arraignment hearing on July 7, dozens of journalists picketed, each taking turns holding up signs in his defense, and police officers arrested them, one by one, for an unlawful assembly.  To understand more about trends in policing journalists and reporting on national security in Russia, “The Naked Pravda” turns to two guests on today's show: (6:46) Rachel Denber, the deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Europe and Central Asia Division, looks back at how Russian journalists have been treated for the past 15 years. Both of these slogans are ostensibly about opposition to police brutality, but they embody very different perspectives on injustice. Black Lives Matter, or BLM, has dominated the news cycle in the U.S., largely supplanting coronavirus as the nation's leading story. The movement has attracted attention in Russia, as well, where the state media has geopolitical reasons to highlight how the United States is a racist and failed democracy, and where many anti-Kremlin, typically Western-leaning oppositionists look to places like the United States as an example for better governance and civil society. In other words, they're watching the U.S. from Russia, and Black Lives Matter is now front and center.
