John Arthur's vows to Jim Obergefell came during a unique wedding ceremony that changed the course of American history. It was 2013 and at the time, Arthur was dying of ALS. Due to the generosity of friends and family the couple were able to exchange vows from within a medical plane parked in Maryland, where gay marriage was legal. Obergefell and Arthur's fight to get their marriage recognized by their home state of Ohio went all the way to the Supreme Court, ultimately paving the way for nationwide marriage equality for same-sex couples 10 years ago. John, tragically, passed before the ruling, but the couple's story endures as a milestone for the LGBTQ+ community. Jim Obergefell joins The Excerpt to share more about his historic journey.Let us know what you think of this episode by sending an email to podcasts@usatoday.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit nealkatyal.substack.comThis week's episode focuses on one of the most moving things I've seen in my life: the US Supreme Court using its powers to ensure that marriage equality is the law of the land. When I was in law school from 1992-1995, if you said the Supreme Court would require states to recognize same-sex marriage within two decades, you likely would have been laughed out of the classroom. And yet, that is precisely what happened.Courtside is an entirely reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. I'm donating all profits to charity, and your subscription covers considerable production costs. This outcome was the result of brilliant advocacy and foresight by so many different people. One of them is our guest for this week, the legendary Rob Reiner, who is going to take you behind the scenes of how this monumental victory was achieved. It's an amazing story. Rob is the gold standard of Hollywood, a truly accomplished Director. When Harry Met Sally. Spinal Tap. Princess Bride. American President. The list goes on and on.He's also a dear friend. When I argued Moore v. Harper, Rob came to watch and hold my hand. Perhaps my favorite moment at the lunch afterwards was when Judge Luttig admitted he didn't know who Rob Reiner was, or what any of his movies were. The Judge is truly a man of tradition!Rob and I have been collaborating on a TV show for families about the Constitution — something of a revival of Schoolhouse Rock. With Jordan Klepper! The episode begins with a bit of legal news of the week, and in particular, an examination of Donald Trump's claim that the Presidential Records Act allowed him to take classified information home and bring it to Mar a Lago. (Spoiler: it doesn't.)This week, we are doing a deep dive into Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 Supreme Court decision that made marriage equality the law of the land. The case began in the early 2010s in four states — Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee, and Kentucky — all of which defined marriage as the union between a man and a woman. These states, however, were not outliers; few States recognized same sex marriage.Recognizing that their rights were being trampled on, fourteen same-sex couples and two men whose same-sex partners had died filed lawsuits against their respective state governments. James Obergefell was one of these people. More than two decades earlier, Obergefell had met and fallen in love with his future life partner: John Arthur. In 2011, however, Arthur was diagnosed with a debilitating illness called ALS. Realizing that Arthur's death was imminent, the duo resolved to get married. To do so, they had to travel to a different state (Maryland) where same-sex marriage was legal; by this point, however, Arthur could barely move, meaning the couple had to be wed inside a medical transport plane on the airport tarmac. Arthur died three months later, but Ohio law forbade his death certificate from listing Obergefell as the surviving spouse. Grieving the loss of his loved one and pained by this state-imposed separation, Obergefell filed a lawsuit, alleging that Ohio state law violated his civil rights under the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.By the time the case arrived at the Supreme Court, however, Obergefell wasn't the only plaintiff. More than a dozen similar lawsuits had been launched across the country, and they all merged into one case. Indeed, it was clear that this was the moment to decide the future of same-sex marriage for the country. And there were only two questions before the Court, both of which were relatively straightforward. First, is same-sex marriage a constitutionally protected right? And second, if someone receives a marriage license in one state, are other states required to recognize that marriage license as valid? The Court answered yes. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Everything has a history, even breakfast cereal. And that history is involved with the history of grain–which means it is involved with both the history of agriculture and urbanism; how humans mark time during the day; meal customs, which means it's also involved with the history of the family; nutrition and health, and all the ideas and fears involved with those terms, as well as the history of science and, believe it or not, the history of religion and of political progressivism;  and, since the late twentieth century, marketing and mass-culture. Breakfast cereal, it turns out, is connected to just about everything. With me to talk about her new book Breakfast Cereal: A Global History is Kathryn Cornell Dolan. She is an associate professor in the department of English and Technical Communication at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Her previous books are Beyond the Fruited Plain: Food and Agriculture in US Literature, 1850-1905 and Cattle Country: Livestock in the Cultural Imagination. For Further Investigation Previous podcasts interlink with this conversation in ways that I didn't anticipate. Rachel Laudan spoke about the history of food in Episode 44; Jonathan Rees and I discussed nutrition and diet as part of our conversation about J. Harvey Wiley in Episode 222; and John Arthur talked about the importance of beer to nutrition and culture throughout world history in Episode 253. Atlas Obscura has an article on the surviving buildings of the Battle Creek Sanitarium. They are amazingly big. If you would like to benefit from the wealth of C.W. Post, you can do so thanks to his only child, Marjorie Merriweather Post who grew the fortune even bigger. She also built amazingly big houses, including one in Florida she named Mar-a-Lago...can't think if I've ever heard of it before. Her home in Washington, DC, was Hillwood, and is now a museum now open to the public. Kathryn's book is notable for having recipes at the back. Until you buy it, you can content yourself with these porridge recipes from around the world, collected by at Saveur magazine. Who hasn't at some point really craved turkey congee? Better than a gobbler sandwich the day after Thanksgiving!

It's critically important to provide all students (MLLs, students with IEPs, high achievers, those with dyslexia and other reading difficulties, etc.) with targeted, effective reading instruction and interventions—this is a well-known fact. However, these students can be tougher to engage, and special teachers, with unique approaches designed to motivate and help every student feel heard, have strategies that bring literacy learning to the forefront while engaging students in ways not always imagined. This lively discussion with three award-winning teachers will open your eyes and inspire every educator to strive for what is possible for every student. Each of our panelists were named Teacher of the Year in their respective states. Our host, John Arthur of Utah, was also honored at the White House as a finalist for National Teacher of the Year. Join us as these three energetic educators share specific strategies and practices they use to help all children overcome challenges, feel seen and heard, and gain new literacy skills that will serve them for a lifetime. Our guests will share tips and ideas useful in any classroom and with any student, with special emphasis on those who struggle as readers and often don't know how to advocate for themselves. This episode will connect the dots for listeners between engaging literacy instruction/intervention and empowered student voices.
