Eric dives into the surprising story of how the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers became part of the Disney family. From Haim Saban's early days as a music producer to building Saban Entertainment, we cover his work in cartoon music, partnerships with Deac, successful shows like X-Men: The Animated Series, and the process of adapting Super Sentai into Power Rangers for American TV. We explore the evolution of Fox Kids, Saban's strategy to gain a cable network, the formation and expansion of Fox Family Worldwide, and the sale to Disney, which transformed the Fox Family Channel into ABC Family (now Freeform). The episode also touches on Disney's use of Power Rangers at the theme parks, the creation of Jetix (later Disney XD), the sale of Power Rangers to Hasbro, and the legacy of ABC Family's “25 Days of Christmas” and the inescapable 700 Club. If you're curious how ‘90s kids' TV, Marvel, Disney, and even televangelist Pat Robertson all connect, this episode unpacks it all. As we move into episodes 6–10 of Chouriki Sentai Ohranger, the Toku Secrets team is growing increasingly concerned about the series' lack of meaningful character development. Despite some flashy battles and new enemy plots, the core team remains frustratingly shallow, with little growth or emotional depth to keep viewers connected. In a season meant to celebrate Super Sentai's legacy, it's disappointing to see the heroes feeling so one-dimensional this far in. In this video, we discuss why strong character work is essential — and how Ohranger continues to miss the mark. Remember to join us on Social Media Today! With Karl Dutton's Power Rangers: The Audio Drama moving into the Zeo era, it only makes sense for the Toku Secrets team to take a hard look at the 20th anniversary season of Super Sentai with a review series on Chouriki Sentai Ohranger. Frankly, this season starts off on the wrong foot. Join us as we break down what's seriously lacking in these early episodes — from the sluggish pacing to the stiff action and underwhelming character development. We'll explore where Ohranger went wrong and discuss what should've been done to make this a much stronger and more exciting entry in the franchise. Remember to join us on Social Media Today! In episode 112 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Bug Boll about their first published solo design in the RPG space, Sentai & Sensibility! A new, niche-themed adventure from 9th Level Games where the unique - but surprisingly similar - worlds of Super Sentai and Jane Austen collide! They talk about the process of writing an RPG, adapting an existing rule system for a new theme, the importance of choosing to be whatever color Power Ranger you want, consulting experts on topics you are not familiar with, and injecting your own interests into game design - RPGs are not always about dragons in space folks! And of course, Bug provides expert advice to new designers looking to create their own RPGs and stories. Featuring: Bug Boll - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host
This week of Castranger, which falls on the 50th Anniversary of Super Sentai and the anniversary of Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger, which we totally timed on purpose, begins with us enjoying Shouma and Hanto's blooming bromance with the debut of Valen Frappe Custom, the graceful bowout of Tokonatsu aka Don Momotaro in Gozyuger, and beginning Akiba April, we discuss how our two nerds and one karate girl delude themselves into being the Super Sentai that parodies its own genre in a way that, to some, may tow the line between good and mean-spirited. Yes, we discussed Akibaranger before, but we're DOING IT AGAIN! Deal with it! Also, Ichi has a hot take about Daizyujin's desert cloak. Disney is making a crack at the Power Rangers, will they succeed where others failed? GameInformer rises from the ashes, and Nintendo is hitting the pitchers mound. Meanwhile, the future of James Bond gets a little clearer as its new producers are named, Assassin's Creed Shadows is out and in the wild, and Minecraft hopes to dominate at the box office.
Disney+ is set to bring a fresh take on the Power Rangers franchise, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz in discussions to lead the project. The new live-action series, produced by Hasbro and 20th Television, aims to reimagine the iconic property for a new generation while keeping longtime fans engaged. The Power Rangers franchise, which began as Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers in 1993, has spanned multiple iterations, movies, and reboots over the last three decades. Based on Japan's Super Sentai, the original series followed a group of teenagers granted the ability to morph into color-coded heroes, battling intergalactic threats with their signature Zords. While the series has enjoyed continued success, attempts to translate the franchise to the big screen have seen mixed results. The 2017 Power Rangers film, a darker, more YA-focused reboot, failed to generate the box office numbers necessary to launch a sequel, despite a passionate fan response.Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers brand in 2018, with an ambitious plan to expand its entertainment presence. This new Disney+ series is the latest effort to revitalize the franchise under Hasbro's guidance.Steinberg and Shotz have built a reputation for delivering compelling character-driven storytelling. Their work on Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been widely praised, successfully adapting Rick Riordan's beloved book series for Disney+. Their previous credits include The Old Man, an FX thriller starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow.Their involvement signals a commitment to quality storytelling and world-building, potentially giving Power Rangers the prestige TV treatment that long-time fans have hoped for.Hasbro Entertainment has been making aggressive moves in the television and film space, with projects based on Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, and Clue in the works. The company is leveraging its vast portfolio of intellectual properties, with Power Rangers positioned as a key franchise in this expansion.Details on the series' storyline, casting, or whether it will adapt an existing Super Sentai season remain under wraps. However, given Disney+'s commitment to high-budget fantasy and adventure programming, expectations for this new iteration are high.As the project develops, the question remains: will this be the definitive Power Rangers revival, or will it face the same challenges that previous reboots encountered?

In this excerpt from a Patreon-exclusive livestream for his other podcast, The Monster Island Film Vault, Nathan interviews James Santana, a comic nerd and tokusatsu fan who combined his passions by starting his own comic book label, TokUSA Studios. His goal is to bridge the gap between tokusatsu/manga fans and comic readers by offering them books inspired by the likes of Super Sentai and Ultraman, among others. He's currently spearheading a Kickstarter for The World of Nebulon, a preview book showcasing several of the characters and titles in the works at the studio.Support his project here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1935627238/world-of-nebulon-preview-book?ref=discovery. Time will tell.---also---BoonBoomChange! The first two episodes of Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger are hear and they are...AMAZING! In 1993, the Super Sentai phenomenon teleported to the U.S.A. in the form of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, transforming the landscape of children's television, and, of course, the toy aisles, forever. In today's episode we talk about how Zordon morphed our childhood in radical ways through Bandai's localized version of its long-running tokusatsu toyline. We talk Zords, Morphers, Rangers, Evil Space Aliens, and of course, Putty Patrol. Join us! Stronger than before, powered up for more, and Rangers at the core... Based on the 19th Super Sentai series Chouriki Sentai Ohranger, Power Rangers Zeo is the fourth season of the Power Rangers franchise and a continuation of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993 - 1995). Luke and Jason tap into the Morphin Grid to revisit their childhood years of 1996 and experience the Saban Entertainment live-action series which was the first season to follow the Super Sentai practice of annual Ranger suit changes. After the destruction of their command center headquarters, the Power Rangers are blessed with the new power source from Zeo Crystals. Together, they strive to fight against a new enemy - the dreaded villains King Mondo and Queen Machina, a powerful pair who rule over the Machine Empire.
We know you've been waiting for it. Finally, we're talking about everyone's favorite riveting and popular villain team… The Wake Riders? Nah. Unfortunately, this episode's Super Sentai rejects and a non-redemption arc for Vulture do not make for a good outing, despite coming from a writer we like. We're watching Marvel's Spider-Man (2017): Season 2, Episode 4: “Rise Above It All”. The Power Trip: A Journey Through the Power Rangers Franchise
Today's episode is a weird one. It's The Power Trip's first solo episode, with Nathan doing more comic book coverage…except it's a manga…about the first Super Sentai…so it's only peripherally related to Power Rangers. Anyway, thanks to Seven Seas Entertainment (who also translated and published the original Kamen Rider manga), Americans can now experience Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, which was created in 1975 by the Jack Kirby of manga, Shotaro Ishinomori. But if you read this graphic novel, be prepared for it to feel more like James Bond than Power Rangers. All the tropes aren't quite there, but it definitely feels like the prototype for both the Sentai and Ranger legacies. Plus, there's a giant robot brontosaurus and a cameo by Robbie the Robot. ‘Nuff said! ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. This week on It Was a Thing on TV we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Power Rangers in America and revisit one of our earliest shows. First, thirty years ago, Haim Saban brought the Super Sentai to the US, and Power Rangers was born... but before THAT, a similar series was brought to the US purely for laughs and/or played-up stereotypes. We look back on the show that was Dynaman, who brought it to life, and what exactly a main squeeze is. Then, early on in this podcast's life, we originally covered Jennifer Slept Here, but it was one of the few episodes Greg missed. He had things to say about this show. Thus, we are revisiting another episode from early on. Follow us at all our socials via our Linktree page at linktr.ee/itwasathingontv Timestamps 0:36 - Dynaman 31:22 - Intermission (The Joey Gallo Update) 34:34 - Jennifer Slept Here Revisited

The Power Trip: A Journey Through the Power Rangers Franchise
We're back, baby! After a brief hiatus thanks to Once & Always,Michael and Nathan resume their Super Sentai coverage with Chouriki Sentai Ohranger. This was the basis for Power Rangers Zeo, but it's quite different. It even has shades of Ultraman with its military team battling evil robots. Speaking of which, the “Machine Empire” in this is like watching Game of Thrones except it's tokusatsu. It's just too bad the show ends up being bipolar tonally thanks to real-life tragedies.
