The Four Nevers of Ministry | Jabin Chavez Leadership Podcast by Jabin Chavez
Full Text of Readings Thursday of the Second Week of Easter Lectionary: 270 The Saint of the day is Saint Bernadette Soubirous Saint Bernadette Soubirous' Story Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844, the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France. The family was living in the basement of a dilapidated building when on February 11, 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette in a cave above the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes. Bernadette, 14 years old, was known as a virtuous girl though a dull student who had not even made her first Holy Communion. In poor health, she had suffered from asthma from an early age. There were 18 appearances in all, the final one occurring on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, July 16. Although Bernadette's initial reports provoked skepticism, her daily visions of “the Lady” brought great crowds of the curious. The Lady, Bernadette explained, had instructed her to have a chapel built on the spot of the visions. There, the people were to come to wash in and drink of the water of the spring that had welled up from the very spot where Bernadette had been instructed to dig. According to Saint Bernadette Soubirous, the Lady of her visions was a girl of 16 or 17 who wore a white robe with a blue sash. Yellow roses covered her feet, a large rosary was on her right arm. In the vision on March 25 she told Bernadette, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” It was only when the words were explained to her that Bernadette came to realize who the Lady was. Few visions have ever undergone the scrutiny that these appearances of the Immaculate Virgin were subject to. Lourdes became one of the most popular Marian shrines in the world, attracting millions of visitors. Miracles were reported at the shrine and in the waters of the spring. After thorough investigation, Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions in 1862. During her life, Saint Bernadette Soubirous suffered much. She was hounded by the public as well as by civic officials until at last she was protected in a convent of nuns. Five years later, she petitioned to enter the Sisters of Notre Dame of Nevers. After a period of illness she was able to make the journey from Lourdes and enter the novitiate. But within four months of her arrival she was given the last rites of the Church and allowed to profess her vows. She recovered enough to become infirmarian and then sacristan, but chronic health problems persisted. She died on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35. Bernadette Soubirous was canonized in 1933. Reflection Millions of people have come to the spring Bernadette uncovered for healing of body and spirit, but she found no relief from ill health there. Saint Bernadette Soubirous moved through life, guided only by blind faith in things she did not understand—as we all must do from time to time.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Send us a textIn this fourth and final instalment of the Weight Loss Nevers series, Charlotte wraps up with two powerful reminders to help you stay grounded in your journey. These last two “nevers” are some of the most common traps people fall into when trying to lose weight, and learning to avoid them can make all the difference in building momentum that actually lasts.Key PointsNever set unrealistic goals Setting extreme targets may feel motivating at first, but it can quickly set you up for disappointment. Charlotte breaks down why “possible” and “plausible” are two different things and why understanding that difference can protect your motivation and self-trust.Never beat yourself up Self-criticism doesn't make change happen faster. In fact, it often stalls progress. Charlotte shares how shifting your self-talk, even in small, believable steps, can help you stay consistent and resilient. Why It MattersSetting unrealistic timelines can lead to feeling like you've failed even when you're making incredible progress.Managing expectations and celebrating small wins creates sustainable momentum.Learning to interrupt negative self-talk with facts helps you build a healthier relationship with food and yourself.Episode HighlightsWhy unrealistic timelines sabotage long-term progressHow to use “possible vs plausible” as a filter for your goalsWhat to do when you catch yourself beating yourself upHow small mindset shifts compound over timeLooking for help on your weight loss journey? Send us a textIn this episode, Charlotte continues her “Weight Loss Nevers” series with numbers 7, 8, and 9 — three more things you should never do when trying to lose weight. She starts with the idea of never eating when you're not hungry, digging into how emotional hunger, boredom, and habit can all blur the lines between needing to eat and wanting to eat. Charlotte explains how awareness develops in stages, and how learning to pause and ask questions helps you take control of your choices.Next, she covers why you should never eat food you don't like. She challenges the idea that weight loss means eating “healthy” foods you hate, and reminds listeners that sustainability comes from enjoying what you eat while still making nutrient-dense choices. Finally, Charlotte closes with why you should never only focus on the long game. Big goals are motivating, but they can also feel overwhelming. She shares how smaller milestones and everyday wins help you stay consistent, confident, and focused on lasting progress.Looking for help on your weight loss journey? Send us a textWe're back with Part Two of the Weight Loss Nevers series, and this week Charlotte unpacks Nevers 4 through 6, three simple rules that quietly change everything about how you eat, think, and treat yourself.Never #4 – Never eat with full hands If your hands are still holding your food (or your phone) while you chew, you're not really present. Charlotte explains how putting the fork down between bites slows your pace, helps you notice fullness, and builds self-trust around food.Never #5 – Never eat on the run Mindfulness and presence aren't the same thing. This one focuses on the mental side of eating, the inner dialogue that happens while you eat. Charlotte talks about noticing the thoughts you have about food and about yourself, and how questioning those stories helps you break the old patterns that keep you stuck.Never #6 – Never compare your wins Comparing progress steals your joy and your motivation. Whether you've lost five pounds or fifty, your pace and your path are yours. Charlotte shows why protecting your own wins matters more than matching anyone else's.If you're ready to slow down, tune in, and build real self-trust, this episode will help you see how small actions add up to lasting change.
Send us a textWhat if extra sleep at the trailhead didn't cost thousands or require a rooftop crane? We sit down with Kai Nevers and Kate Raber, the duo behind Wanderhut, to tell the story of a hatchback tent that deploys the moment you open your rear door—adding headroom, real ventilation, and bug-proof comfort without the hassle of pitching a tent in the dark. Born as a taped-up class project and validated by a stranger in a Home Depot parking lot, their design carries a simple promise: save time, breathe easier, and wake up ready for the adventure. We walk through the messy first prototype, the year-long quest to solve attachment (snaps for the win), and why focusing on the third-gen Subaru Outback became a superpower. Along the way, OSU Cascades and Bend Outdoor Works opened doors to mentors like former Nike design leader Naomi Morrison and industrial designer Ryan Price, whose hard-earned wisdom sharpened costing, positioning, and supply chain thinking. The result is a product that respects real-world constraints: it installs in minutes, lives in the car between trips, and hits a price point that welcomes new campers and overlanders without compromise.Under the gear talk is a human story about partnership, grit, and community. Kate's textile precision and Kai's big-picture push create the tension great products need. They're candid about cash flow, MOQs, tariff delays, and imposter syndrome—and how they keep the brand grounded by turning “marketing trips” into true resets outdoors. If you've ever chased vanlife comfort on a hatchback budget, this conversation offers practical insight, honest lessons, and a glimpse of what affordable, elegant outdoor design can look like.Subscribe, share with a friend who sleeps at trailheads, and leave a quick review to help more builders and weekend warriors find the show. Send us a textWe're kicking off a brand new series: the Weight Loss Nevers. Most of the time you hear about what you should do to lose weight. But in this series, I'm breaking down the things you should NEVER do if you want your weight loss to last. These are the traps, the shortcuts, and the self-sabotage patterns that only make things harder. In this episode, I share the first three “nevers”:Never weigh yourself more than once a week. Daily weigh-ins will mess with your head, drive you crazy, and push you toward giving up. Once a week is plenty.Never go so restrictive you can't sustain it. If your deficit or food rules are too extreme, you're setting yourself up to fail. Sustainable weight loss comes from incremental change, not punishment.Never lose sight of your goal. Big goals matter, but so do the small “micro-goals” that keep you moving forward when the daily grind feels overwhelming. This episode is about shifting focus away from diet-industry punishment and towards realistic, sustainable strategies. It's about learning to work with yourself instead of against yourself. What you'll learn in this episode:Why weighing daily makes the scale your enemy instead of your toolThe difference between a healthy calorie deficit and an unsustainable oneHow to break big weight loss goals into motivating micro-goalsWhy deprivation only leads to overeating (and why you don't need to punish yourself to lose weight)If you've been stuck in the cycle of extremes - weighing too often, cutting out too much, or losing sight of why you started - this episode will give you a clear, compassionate reset.Looking for help on your weight loss journey? USAFA - Spirit of 76 - Legacy Project - REPORT! Interviews with the Long Blue Line.
“Bud” Nevers grew up in Spokane, attended a small private HS (without team sports), and became a great golfer. This led him to an athletic appointment to USAFA which was a culture shock to say the least. While a cadet he did 3rd Lt at Edwards and asked for heavy airlift which excited him enough to stay around undo graduate, complete UPT, and become a C-141 pilot. After his first tour he snagged an assignment back at the zoo as a golf coach. From there he left active duty and began flying tankers in the USAF Reserve while also flying for USAIR. Twenty years later they merged with another airline which sidelined Bud for a bit when he became a financial advisor. He returned to flying after a few years and finally really retired at 65.

Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of Holy Week Lectionary: 259The Saint of the day is Saint Bernadette SoubirousSaint Bernadette Soubirous' Story Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844, the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France. According to Bernadette, the Lady of her visions was a girl of 16 or 17 who wore a white robe with a blue sash. During her life, Bernadette suffered much. Bernadette moved through life, guided only by blind faith in things she did not understand—as we all must do from time to time. Learn more about Saint Bernadette!
