Join me in listening to Meg Walker as she reads a letter she wrote entitled, 3 Truths When You Don’t Feel Like a Mom This Mother’s Day. In this bonus episode Meg says these words: “We can’t make promises on whether or not every person you’ve ever met will remember your child’s name or the special anniversaries that are etched into your memory - even your own spouse might forget from time to time. What we can promise is this: you will never forget your baby. But you aren’t the only one. On this Mother’s Day, take heart in that even if no one else remembers your baby, God remembers with you - and he sees you. He collects your tears in a bottle. And your baby is not forgotten.” She goes on to offer so much hope as she directly speaks to the woman who doesn’t feel like a mom this Mother’s Day. We pray this special bonus episode brings you hope as you are reminded that you are loved and not alone. More women are realizing that strength training can provide numerous positive benefits. These include everything from better metabolism and improved hormonal regulation to increased bone density and just plain being stronger. Statistically, women tend to put more emphasis on cardio, high-intensity interval training, stretching, and abdominal training than strength training. Engaging in strength training twice a week can reduce overall body fat by as much as three percent in as little as ten weeks. This is because strength training reduces body fat and burns calories more efficiently. One of the most popular questions I get is how to overcome the creative obstacles that are in the world. Whether they are out there, or within us, we've told ourselves a bunch of stories of why we can't create. I thought it would be very helpful, based on listener requests, to do an episode on creative obstacles. When you're feeling stuck, recognize you're not waiting to be able to create, you're waiting to FEEL LIKE creating. That's a very different thing. The trap is that we often don't feel like creating until we're well under way. If you wait for the feeling to come before you start, you're going to be sitting there waiting. So when I look to figure out what is actually blocking me from creating, I think about these three things: * Am I waiting for someday or that perfect moment? how can I start now? what's one thing I can do to move me forward? * Where is my time going? How can I structure my time such that realign schedule with my ambitions and values * How can I work in microbursts and reset my expectations on what I can create in a given moment. Ready to start moving forward? I'll see you over in the episode. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. CreativeLive is the world's largest hub for online creative education in photo/video, art/design, music/audio, craft/maker and the ability to make a living in any of those disciplines. They are high quality, highly curated classes taught by the world’s top experts -- Pulitzer, Oscar, Grammy Award winners, New York Times best selling authors and the best entrepreneurs of our times.

SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley and I took the conversation to another level as we had a special conversation about physicians helping physicians and she reveals what she is doing to help physicians who are interested in non-clinical careers this summer in July! Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Mudge’s Background ● Dr. Mudge was in pathology training as a pathology before transitioning in 2004 She loved medicine, but wasn’t sure clinical medicine was what she felt comfortable with. Back in those days, resources that now are available all over the internet weren’t there. That made her feel alone and lost. ● She then tried other jobs somehow related to medicine - which was the only work experience she had - and worked for a medical device company and hospital administration. Without marketing or administration knowledge, the outcomes weren’t exactly good. ● She started telling her story, and it got picked up by different news channels. Later, she was invited to speak in conferences about her experience. Not long after that, her clients started reaching out to her for coaching services. A Message For the Doctors that Feel Like they Outgrew Their Careers It’s a bit scary, because you may feel like you are turning your back into what you worked so hard for. You are not a failure, you are exploring other options. It’s valid to think about businesses that you’d like to start, careers that you’d like to explore. Spread your wings, because good things come with that. The Situation of Doctors Trying to Change Their Career Path ● No one is safe form how lost they will feel once they make the transition. Triple board certified orthopedics, surgeons, etc… ● Currently, there is what seems to be a mass exodus. Doctors are looking towards changing their career, and this doesn’t necessarily mean coming out of clinical, but just practicing on their own terms. ● What stops most of the people is fear. “What’s out there? Is there anything for me?” ● There are many different paths that people can take: Telemedicine, utilization review work, healthcare IT, pharma medical science liaison work, digital technology related or unrelated to medicine… How To Help Doctors During the Transition ● Preparing their minds for the journey: Most of physicians look only at the destination. Becoming a doctor was a journey, and most forget that. The transition will be journey too. ● It’s best to leave the competitive mindset behind: Striving to be as good as it gets is wonderful, but there’s no need to push others down. There’s enough bread for everyone. ● Confidence: Many will say that a transition is stupid, a waste of time, or a waste of medical training. There’s a reason someone decided to do the transition, and that should be the one thing on their mind, and their main motivation. How to Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One: A 10-Step Plan to Turn a Bad Day Into an Amazing Day - Plus Q&A - Have you ever had a bad day and decided to throw in the towel? A bad day can make you feel like giving up and waiting for tomorrow to come. However, a bad day can be saved. You really don’t get that many days over the course of a lifetime, so make the most of each day. With some effort and a little mental toughness, a bad day can be turned into a good day. Ready to turn it all around and have a great day? Learn to make a good day out of a bad day with these strategies: 1. Relax. It might FEEL LIKE your day is off to a terrible start, but it’s not over just yet. The first step is to take a deep breath and relax. Slow down your heart rate, think a few positive thoughts, and regain your composure. Put yourself in the right frame of mind to salvage the remainder of the day. There's still hope! 2. Accomplish something. Get one little thing accomplished that you can check off your list. If you’re at home, make your bed or clean the kitchen counters. If you’re at work, send that email you’ve been avoiding. Give yourself a small success and a little momentum. 3. Call a friend. Or reach out to your support group - join one of mine at QueenBeeing.com/group-support. Call a friend and share your bad day. You want to call someone that will be encouraging. Avoid calling someone that will do more harm than good. 4. Make a plan for the remainder of the day. If you want to salvage the day, you need a plan. Look at the time you have left in the day and decide what’s most important to accomplish. Make a reasonable plan to get the most important things completed before the day is over. Pick one or two things that are most important and focus on those things. Remember to focus on controlling what you can and not what you can't. 5. Be grateful. Gratitude can reset your attitude. When you feel grateful, you have a better perspective and can be more productive. You feel less hopeless when you experience gratitude. Do the 10 and 3 exercises! 6. Get some exercise. A bad day can create a lot of negative emotions. Those emotions create a lot of energy that needs to be burned off. Exercise is a great way to move toward feeling normal again. You can make wiser decisions when you’re less emotionally stimulated. 7. Pat yourself on the back! Seriously! Be proud of yourself for turning your day around. Allow yourself to feel proud as soon as you make even a tiny bit of progress. This will provide a well-needed boost to your mood, self-esteem, and progress. 8. Figure out what happened so you can avoid it tomorrow. Determine how you contributed to having a bad day. Some bad days are just random events, but others are not. Consider the origin of your bad day and brainstorm ways of preventing a repeat occurrence. Not all bad days can be prevented, but many can. 9. Get out your bullet journal, planner or notebook. Make a plan for tomorrow. Choose to make the most of tomorrow. You might have some catching up to do. Or, you might need to plan a night on the town with a few friends. Make up for having a bad day by having a magnificent day. 10. Go to bed at a decent hour if you can. Get a good night of sleep. You survived! Do your best to recharge your batteries and prepare for tomorrow. Hopefully, tomorrow will be much better. You’ll certainly feel better after a good night of rest. What Does it Look Like (and Feel Like) to Transition to a Distributed Team Impulse Creative hasn't always been a partially remote team. Before adding distributed team members, we were a completely in-house team totally headquartered and housed in Fort Myers, Florida. A few years ago, Impulse Creative faced a challenge. 70% of the team left the company all at once during what Remington called "a poaching by another agency." In that moment, Impulse needed to hire new talent and quickly. Co-founders Remington and Rachel considered remote workers to fill that need of "getting a butt in the seat, fast." Today’s Sponsor is Impulse Creative’s Video Marketing Masterclass - George B Thomas built out an 11 module On-Demand Course on how to leverage Video in your Business. He covers everything from how to choose the right equipment, to what you can do videos about in your business. Check it out at impulsecreative.com/vfm and preview 2 modules for Free. Being able to have an employee, no matter where they are in the country, pivot to your business quickly, can make the difference between two weeks and four weeks (or longer) for a new team member. Sometimes a need drives change that benefits your business in the long run. Forget location. Focus on talent. Stay agile. Remington and Dan dive deep into what it "feels like" for an owner/founder to realize that the traditional "if your business is healthy, you're increasing office space and building a team you can see" is changing. You may not be able to point to your team in person, but you can include worldwide talent as part of your team instead. It's also a common concern that with remote workers, collaboration may go away. You have to combat that with technology, culture, and a focused effort. Technology has made it so your business can grow beyond local talent. You no longer have to move someone (and potentially their family) if you hire someone from across the country. That may feel uncomfortable for some business owners or leaders, but it's something Remington says is freeing as well. Hiring That First Remote Employee It's not an easy thing to make the transition and hire that first remote employee. For Impulse Creative, that person was Danielle. She's still with the company. But it wasn't a simple road for either side. Remington honestly lays out the early conversations, where he told Danielle that this was a new direction for the company, that it won't be easy, but if both sides are willing to learn, it could be exciting. He says open dialogue and candor are critical to the success of this transition. In-House Team Benefits Over the course of the conversation, Remington talks about benefits to having a team in-house. This may mean you'll want to have a mix of in-house and remote, or it may mean that you'll need to consider how to encourage some of this for your distributed team. Or you might end up finding a new way to encourage these benefits. Passive Communication When your team is all together, they get a feel for their coworkers and what's going on with them. Maybe one person hears two others talking about an issue they're trying to fix. That third person overhears it, and drops in to offer a quick thought that solves it. That passive communication doesn't naturally happen when miles separate the team. This also means that when your team isn't in the same room, things like recognizing mood or making personal connections may not happen as easily. When people are together every day, they get to know each other through interpersonal, non-verbal communication. A distributed team has to find a different way of coming together. Empathy and Awareness "It's harder to identify when someone is struggling, when they're not right there," Remington says. As a leader, manager, or business owner, you're probably in tune with your team. You can tell when they're struggling with a task or a project. You may even be able to tell when they're having a bad day. "You can hear their sighs. With the in-house team, when someone makes a sigh in a certain way, I know they need help even if they don't ask for it." When you're with them in-person, empathy and awareness are more natural and easy. Distributed Team Benefits With a distributed team, comes specific benefits. Here are a couple the guys cover in the conversation. Talent Pool Relocation happens when you find talent outside of your geographical area. But that can add expense, it can increase risk for both the company and the employee, and it takes time. Remote workers can be up and running faster, they get to stay where there home already is, and you don't need to pay for relocation. With a distributed team, your talent pool expands. Flexibility When you have team members who can work from anywhere, they can work... from anywhere! At the time of this recording, our graphic designer Jeffrey (lives/works in northern Florida) was working while traveling. He was in southern California, where he's from, on a personal trip. He was able to take some time off during the trip, but also work to save some of the time off. If your team member has to travel but can still work, they're able to have more flexibility for themselves and your business. Some Tools to Help Your Distributed Team From software to hardware to cultural focuses, the tools you put into play for your distributed team are critical. Here are a few we cover. 15Five This helps with performance and engagement of employees by continuously asking questions and starting the right conversations. Video First Culture Video helps connect us. Instead of standard phones, we go right to video. It helps with non-verbal communication and face-to-face connection. Slack Instant communication. Also, random conversations. We have channels like #random, #gifgab, #music and others. Asana Having a productivity tool is key to any team. It's even more critical for a remote team. It helps with communication, accountability, and more. Tettra Documentation is key. Where can employees go to find past learnings, processes and more? We use Tettra. A ton. Purposeful In-Person Gatherings Whether it's an annual event or monthly visits from different team members, it's critical to include your distributed team in events at headquarters. Work from Home Test Build empathy and test the system. Impulse Creative put a test in place for the in-house team - a work from home week. Hear about that experience at 20:30 into the conversation. Remington learned a lot about himself in this one... "Donuts" In-house employees have the opportunity to have coffee talk, water cooler conversations, snacks together... what about a distributed team? We put a practice into play where we randomly pair employees together for a casual conversation. It helps to connect and build relationships. (Go back to the video culture point!) I got an email from someone struggling to start their podcast, "The biggest issue I’m dealing with is psychological: the show is not coming together in the format that I really wanted—and at this point there seems to be nothing I can do about that— but that, combined with fear, uncertainty, and doubt, and the inevitable self-comparisons to what others are doing as well as my own personal expectations has quite frankly got me a little bit paralyzed. It’s like I’m on the firing line, I’m locked and loaded and I’ve got a good site picture, but I just can’t get myself to pull the trigger because I’m afraid of the kickback." I think we all know that parenting can be hard-- but from what I've heard, step-parenting is even harder. Think about some of the struggles you face with your children-- maybe it's dealing with sassy attitudes or figuring out the rules and technology expectations in your home. Then imagine trying to navigate all of that with children who also have another parent or set of parents and another home they live in part of the time. I can only imagine how complicated that must get and how many big emotions are involved. Today's guest, Amanda Louder--a life coach, podcaster, mother of three, and stepmother of two--gives three takeaways that have helped her navigate and embrace her blended family: 1) Treat your step children as equals to your own children: give them the same amount of love, responsibility, and discipline 2) Understand that he was their dad first 3) Try to find a new family culture Amanda has such a positive outlook as she strives to "live from love" in the relationships she has with all of her children. We commiserate about not having high-tech mic stands, but somehow we record anyway. And that segues us somehow into talking about how we both love to make lists. (And then cross things off!) Julia lets Sarah know about Bullet Journaling, and she says she’s not having it, personally. It’s too much work. All leading to how Julia feels Menopause is an amazing opportunity to take stock of your life. Julia brings up the notion of Commitment vs. Interest. Sarah brings up that when you do take stock, sometimes you’re faced with wanting to make a change about some aspect of your life, but because it might be hard to do, you aren’t willing to do the work, so you stay stagnant - and likely unhappy. Sarah feels sometimes like she wasted time not being as purposeful with her life. Like she feels so excited about life right now, but then feels OLD at the same time. Julia says she sometimes felt similarly about having her daughter later in life, but hey - that’s when she did it. There are some things you can’t change. But Julia is just feeling very excited about this place and time in life. Julia mentions something funny that happened when she tried to do her vagina homework. She was lying in bed thinking that she maybe should do her “homework” (masturbating), but then the next thing she knew she woke up the next morning! LOL Bible Study - Menopause Confidential by Dr. Tara Allmen - Chapter 16 - “Potions, Patches and Pills, Oh My!” This chapter is packed full of info about Hormone Replacement Therapies - so much to learn! Turns out so many studies about medication for Women’s Health is based on studying the effects on MEN. Ridiculous! But we learn the big difference between Peri-menopuase and Menopause: menopause is the cessation of periods for 1 year. AND - she says that IF you are still menstruating, you are technically not a candidate for hormone replacement therapy - which was big news to us! The Dr. also says that peri-menopausal women can be prescribed a low-dose birth control pill (continuous use) that will even out the estrogen. This will prevent you from knowing when you’ve had your last period, but it will help even you out. This is kind of what happened to Sarah, except with an IUD, and so her dr. recommended she stop using it, but whoops - he was wrong and she still has her period. Dr. Allmen calls women Sarah’s age who still have a period “show-offs”. Dr. Allmen talks about how different therapies and “potions” work differently and of course, every woman is different, so her fantastic tip is to try something for 3 months and see how it goes. If you get to 3 months and it isn’t working - try something else. And don’t quit it before 3 months is up. And we both want to find someone who specializes in menopause. We feel women should share info with each other about the best doctors. Factoid: turns out there are 65 million menopausal women in the US - and most are not on HRT. We discuss all the ways HRT can be delivered. Julia chose the Patch. You can be a candidate for HRT up until 10 years past your last menstrual period. AND the Dr. says she doesn’t usually recommend women stop taking HRT, and Julia has been considering tapering off. It’s making her think about it. But there’s some confusion about when it’s too late to be taking HRT. Factoid - progesterone is for your uterus. So if you’ve had a hysterectomy, no need! There’s some complicated info about bio-identical hormone therapy. We feel you’ll need to speak to your own medical pro to sort it all out. And she says this great thing - trust your symptoms and how you feel! The blood work may not bear out what you are feeling, so stick to your guns! Chapter 17 - “I Want to Feel Like a Natural Woman” What we like about Dr. Allmen is she likes facts and studies, and she feels there is not a lot of data proving that “natural” remedies work. But she also says that if something does work for you, no matter what it is, go for it! The chapter goes into more detail about lots of other treatment options. And use her rule of thumb give it the old three-month try! Chapter 18 - Do I Really Have to Lift Weights Too?” And the answer is YES. By the way, weight training doesn’t actually help strengthen bones; rather what it does is build muscle mass around the bones, keeping them safer. Plus you’ll get a side benefit of having better balance, which means fewer falls, which helps keep bones safer, too. Dr. Allmen says the key is to work with light weights, and do a total of 60 minutes per week. Sarah wants to be able to remind herself how good it feels to have finished her workout. So that she can motivate herself to working out. We loved all these chapters - and highly recommend this book! No Hot Flashes for us!

The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
"Cozy living is about creating an atmosphere of warmth, contentment, and pleasure within your home and in your life. It is increasing your awareness of and focusing on embracing the simple, everyday moments to rise above problems, release stress, enjoy friends and family, and to appreciate all you experience." —Melissa Alvarez, author of The Simplicity of Cozy: Hygge, Lagom & the Energy of Everyday Pleasures Over the weekend, I took a day to spend time doing simple activities I don't always have time to immerse myself in as the school year is in full swing. I took a day to exercise the important habit of being present, taking in the beauty of what was surrounding me and let myself feel what I felt. For many people, the past week was a week of external events affecting our emotions in ways we may not have expected and thus were not prepared for. Add on top of that a busy week of regular to-dos, meetings, responsibilities, etc., and it may have become overwhelming. During such weeks whenever they arise, but also when weeks are going well, tending to our self-care is essential. A few years ago on the podcast (episode #122) self-compassion was discussed as well as the seven benefits of choosing not to be our harshest critic, but rather being more gentle with ourselves as we do our best each day, which can be different depending upon the day. Part of having self-compassion is taking good care of ourselves, being aware of our emotional tendencies, being tough and persevering when necessary, but also respecting that with more self-care, the persevering becomes easier. In other words, simply pushing through without the self-care makes it all the more difficult and the quality of what we produce is often severely diminished. While I referenced this week as an example for making the effort to practice self-care, the practice itself is most effective when used preventively. In other words, by instituing regularly routines, rituals and choices into our everyday lives that elevate the quality, we are practicing self-care and thus elevating what we can endure and how well we work through any day that comes our way. Today I'd like to share with you 16 ways to welcome self-care into your everyday way of living. Some are as simple as what types of ingredients you use in your kitchen to cook your meals, while others pertain to your relationships, and even others your sanctuary and daily routine. Let's get started! 1.Buy Quality Butter - look for a high butter-fat count. Often these brands will be from Europe - Plugra, Kerrygold and many French butters. Spend a little more and improve the simple experience with everything you enjoy butter. 2. Make a delicious fall dessert (see today's Petit Plaisir for an idea that will melt in your mouth and is simple as apple pie.) 3. Let yourself wake up without an alarm clock. 4. Take a hot shower and just let the hot water run down your body - stand still, close your eyes and enjoy. 5. Spend time in a bookstore or library. 6. Visit a winery or go wine tasting and enjoy sipping while gazing out upon the fall foliage. 7. Hire someone to clean your house, even if just once is all you can afford. Relish walking through the door and seeing an immaculately clean house asking nothing of you but to sit, relax and enjoy your space. 8. Purchase a luxurious candle, pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers, choose a movie you are curious to watch, either pick up your favorite take out or cook a wonderful comfort meal, and enjoy a truly luxurious solitary evening. 9. Sit outside at dawn or dusk or the middle of the day and just listen and watch the world, Mother Nature, the moment. 10. Cuddle with someone you love. 11. Bring a small bud or bouquet of flowers into your bedroom. 12. Slip into linen sheets spritz with lavender linen spray and dive into a delicious book. 13. Pick up a book that celebrates the seasons. I highly recommend Sharon Santoni's My French Country Home: Entertaining Through the Seasons 14. Plan a weekend away, even if just a town away where you can spoil yourself with mini adventures and dining adventures you have been eager to try. 15. Eat a chocolate truffle at the end of the day and sip a lovely cup of tea. 16. Soak in a hot bubble bath with your favorite tunes, candles lit and finish a good book. (I recently did exactly this and finished a delightful book on living in Paris.) The gift of self-care is not only what it brings to us and enriches in our daily experience, but how it improves our daily interactions and relationships with others. We begin to become more aware of our own feelings and needs as we listen more closely, and as it is a muscle, we can be better to observe when others are in need of a breather, a rest or a boost as well. When we invest in ourselves before the attention is needed, we avoid scenarios and situations we do not want to go through without realizing they may have occurred had we not been dutifully tending to ourselves on a regular basis. Today examine when and what you'd like to do to welcome a few self-care practices into your daily and weekly routine. Enjoy planning and looking forward and when in the moment of these self-care practices, simply savor and soak in the needed nourishment. ~SIMILAR POSTS FROM THE ARCHIVES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~Why Not . . . Amy B. Scher, author of "This is how I Save my Life" and expert in mind-body-spirit healing Amy B. Scher, "This Is How I Save My Life" After seven years of boundless symptoms, innumerable diagnoses, and all the treatments you can imagine, the root of Amy's trouble was discovered: Lyme disease. Amy B. Scher (http://amybscher.com) had gotten accustomed to a life in-between wellness and illness, rarely fully in either world. When traveling to India for an experimental stem cell treatment was suggested to her, she knew she had to go—not necessarily because she knew it would work, but because she had to try one more (last) thing. The healing Amy experienced in India looked different than she imagined it would(it involved eating chocolate cake and macaroni and cheese), but, indeed, healing did come. Amy's stem cell treatment in India is the framework for her new book, "This is How I Save My Life," ( http://amy-b-scher.mykajabi.com/p/this-is-how-i-save-my-life ) but the book is about so much more—how to take responsibility for our own healing when nothing else is working. In this episode, we dive in to all of the different things you can do to help yourself—all you can do to save your life when no one else can. Weekly Challenge: Amy asks, "how much of your time and energy is spent trying to control?" I know I waste my precious energy in this way far too often. Amy urges us to practice letting go when we want to fight our current circumstances by repeating the mantra, "let go let go let go let go let go let go." In her book, "This is How I Save My Life," and in this episode, Amy explains why and how she did this in the chaos of India—and how it helped her heal. Valentine's Day is that one time of year where pretty much the same usual suspects occurs and/or is shared: chocolates/candy, flowers, dinner in or out, and/or a movie and perhaps the proverbial romantic back or foot massage. *Blows bangs to express boredom and hoe-hum* Well, this epi of AngFrankPodcast was inspired by Ang (watching “50 Shades of Grey” for the first time…no…she didn't go out and grab the book and stand in long lines at the theatre to go see it). But much to her surprise, it sparked an idea that (as the intimacist she fancies herself) prompted her to drop a podcast to assist lovebirds and couples in perhaps looking into some other non-traditional intimate ideas that could assist you in learning each other more-in every intimate way from never before discussed desires to downright devancies and fetishes that couples probably never explore. Give each other a time-out pass, where this upcoming and future Valentines Day's, together, you are free to discuss thoughts, feelings, desires and perhaps requests that you may want but may have been to afraid or ashamed to ask. If no other time of the year, allow yourselves at least a February 14th day yearly pass to at least talk these things over, even if it doesn't get explored. I promise, AngFrankPodcast, a champion of relationship and intimacy, will bring the two of you closer than you've ever been. Gratitude is being appreciative of a kindness or a benefit received. Slow travel is easily one of Amanda's favourite topics - taking your time when you travel instead of rushing around to see all the sights as fast as possible is a much more satisfying way to experience a new place, she thinks. In Episode 44 Amanda chats with three like-minded guests, starting with Brooke McAlary who, as the creator of the Slow Your Home blog and the Slow Home Podcast certainly knows a lot about slowing down, and shares some great thoughts about slow travel. Matt Treglia, Amanda's second guest, is a younger traveller but a smart one: right from the beginning, he had a sixth sense that slow travel is the way to go and Amanda thinks he and his girlfriend are really doing it right. Amanda's final guest in this episode is Cait Flanders and we chat about her plans to spend a couple of months based in one place, getting to know it as the locals do. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #133 Maybe you've had a few or many past failed relationships. Perhaps you are currently single or married or in a relationship at the moment, but maybe it just doesn't feel as though you know how to make it stronger, healthier, but there is some part of you that knows it is possible. Even if you aren't in a relationship, you understand that it is a healthy relationship you seek because at the moment, life is grand on your own and far better than being in a dysfunctional partnership. As you reflect on the past, remember this: You gave love, you were hopeful, you did your best with what you knew at the time. Let go. And forgive yourself. "Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn't know before you learned it." As I look back on my own past that contains a handful of relationships, all of which were unique and different, and began and ended for different reasons, I know I am a different person now, I know that I have learned much more to be a far better partner, but also to be a far better, and more content individual whether I am in a relationship or not. I know now, but I didn't then because I didn't know either what I needed or where to find the knowledge I sought. I either had models that were dysfunctional and I didn't recognize it or I didn't have a deeper understanding of what I was modeling my life after. Most importantly, I was still growing and discovering myself, and thankfully, that journey has never ceased. Why am I thankful that the journey has continued? Because it has finally lead me to resources, valuable and worthwhile resources to understand what I was lacking when it came to being someone who was indeed ready to be in a healthy relationship. And this is what I have discovered. 1. Explore what interests you In episode #131, the philosopher Bertrand Russell's approach to happiness was discussed in detail and at the top of the list of 38 ways to attain happiness was the idea of exploring what interests you. The key is sincerity of interest and the other component is to have more than just a few interests. For if one falls through or wanes, you have other interests which can fill the gaps and ease the loss in your daily routine of doing what you love and enjoy. To put all of our time and interest into one basket of interest is to put a tremendous amount of pressure on that focus in our lives. Often that focus is a relationship, and while tending to and investing in a relationship that brings us much joy is a worthwhile interest, it shouldn't be the only interest we have. Pursue your love of the French language, pursue your love of cooking, your itch to travel, working in the yard, caring for a pet, time in your art studio, anything that you are naturally drawn to and build a wealthy life of interests that fill your schedule without weighing you down. 2. Investigate and explore your barriers to healthy relationships “The good news is that every morning we have the choice; not to be controlled by circumstances nor our past but by purposely designing our day, hence our lives better. Not to react to life but to respond with love.” ― Bernard Kelvin Clive The work behind the scenes that nobody sees, the internal work, is the work that will reap awesome, lasting benefits enabling you to see and experience lasting growth from which you can continue to build on to build the strong and healthy relationships you want but perhaps didn't know how to attain because you kept getting in your own way unconsciously due to either buried fears, insecurities, a past history that played a negative thought track that prevented you from seeing the amazing possibilities you were presented with. Investing in ourselves by scheduling time with a counselor or an expert in the field in which we know we need to grow is an investment in a quality way of life that will not only equip you to attain true contentment but you will be demonstrating that to the world around you and providing an environment and a model of how to live well. 3. Learn how to communicate effectively Some of us as children were able to observe healthy and effective communication habits. The most powerful communication that is often hard to see modeled is when two individuals disagree. How do they express how they are feeling, feel respected without attacking and move forward? If we haven't seen this modeled in our own lives, it is up to each of us to learn, and thankfully, the information on this topic is abundant. Ultimately, in order to communicate well, we must know what we want to say and why we want to say it. And in order to understand the "why", which is actually a difficult truth to unearth, we must get to know ourselves. It sounds odd perhaps, but we need to understand why we are angry in particular moments; we need to understand why we are fearful; why we get defensive; why we get jealous, and look within ourselves to understand our unconscious reactions before we speak and do damage unnecessarily. On the flip-side, we must not cower into ourselves and become passive. There will never be a healthy relationship that involves a passive individual if the relationship wants to grow stronger. We must communicate without attacking, express how we feel, be able to objectively observe our emotions, and listen with intent to learn and understand more deeply. Click here for a more in-depth post on each of these and more tips to effective communication. 4. Cultivate a healthy, strong social life Our social worlds are often tied to our interests as well as our work, and as discussed in episode #36, while they take time to build, the gift is you feel free to be yourself and thus your social life becomes a place of enjoyment, pleasure, respite and an integral piece to your contented life. With a clear list of people to let go of (of which there on nine) and six people to welcome into your life, the episode reveals that it is who is in your life that will help alleviate your stress and you theirs as well as allowing them and you to be truly free to be yourself that will enhance all arenas of your life. 5. Actively pursue your dreams “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt Let go of the have-tos and must-dos of the lives we see modeled around us whether by family members, the media or community and/or national institutions and instead dive into your dream. Perhaps your dream requires you to work on the weekends or each night after work a few hours. Maybe your dream prevents you from celebrating when Friday evening arrives, but enables you to come alive when you immerse yourself in the pursuit. Trust your dreams, not the fears that are thrown at you by the outside world that you are not doing what you should be doing. People are intrigued and appreciative of those who have the courage to tap into something and pursue it doggedly. Not everyone will understand, but those who respect it and admire it will be people with whom you will connect with. And you, in pursuing your dreams will find a contentment that at first will be hard to describe to anyone who is simply following a path that everyone else is one, but then you will learn it is the only way to be truly alive and authentically you. 6. Cultivate self-compassion When we look within ourselves for compassion, we give ourselves permission to be imperfect. We begin to recognize that we must first be kind to ourselves in order for others to know that is how we deserve to be treated. Yes, some will be kind anyway, as it is their way, and a very good way indeed, but for those who may attempt to push our boundaries, we recognize the attempt and can keep them out of our lives unable to do harm. Often we are the harshest critics in our lives, as discussed in episode #122, but the belief that doing so is the best path to success is false. In fact, it is quite detrimental. Rather, being self-compassionate reveals a higher emotional intelligence as we are able to have a broad perspective on our circumstances and move on rather than get bogged down in self-criticism. And when we are the cheerleaders of our own lives, when we are not the bully in our own heads, we look less to the outside world to build us up and are able to build healthier relationships as we can take care of our own emotional needs. 7. Become comfortable with validating yourself If we do not first validate ourselves, approve of the life and the decisions we make within our lives, we will be constantly running around seeking approval from others, dependent upon it, desperate for acceptance, and we will only be harming ourselves, never able to find true contentment. As shared in a post in 2011, “You can succeed if nobody else believes it, but you will never succeed if you don’t believe in yourself.” But why do many of us fall into the trap of first asking if we should do something and instead simply trusting what we know will fulfill us, what we know will bring pure joy, what we know will make us happy? We want to bond with others, we want love, we want to feel love. This is human. But what it does is bonds us with people who we may not want to bond with. Wouldn't you rather bond with someone who was fascinated with your decision after the fact? After you had made the big decision to pursue that dream which may have appeared ridiculous to some, but made complete sense to you? Wouldn't you want an authentic connection? Yes, it is scary to refrain from seeking validation from others, especially from our parents, peers and those we may have been (or currently are) in relationships with, but when we forget about the power of our own self-approval, we limit the quality of life we could be living. 8. Build a life you love living on your own “Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough.” ― Emily Dickinson Cultivating a simply luxurious life centers around the premise of building something that is congruent with your authentic and most true self, letting go of building the life you think you should and upon incorporating the former rather than the latter approach, the quality way of living you seek will materialize. A funny thing happened over the weekend. As I mentioned in a previous This & That post, I have been contemplating picking out a significantly smaller tree for my house this holiday season. Well, I in fact did just that, and as I look around my smaller house (nearly 1000 sq feet smaller than what I had lived in previously) after having decorated the tree, having added a few decorations to the tabletops (I found mistletoe!) and having hung the stockings for the boys (my dogs - Norman and Oscar) and myself, I still had energy and more money than previous seasons in my checking account for holiday expenditures. When we begin to truly listen to what works for us, rather than gravitate toward what we've done, what has been done, what we've seen, what we know, we begin to curate a life that is in alignment with our values. We begin to curate a life that enables us to live and pursuit what we love and thus become enlivened from within. We are the gardeners of a rich and more fulfilling life, if only we will listen to ourselves. When it comes to relationships, we will undoubtedly be involved in many different types, all having the gift of teaching us something about ourselves and the world. But when it comes to lasting relationships, relationships that will endure, however, keeping in mind that nothing is infinite, we multiply the happiness quotient for not only ourselves no matter what we may be doing but also for those we love. ~SIMILAR POSTS FROM THE ARCHIVES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~The Myth Hindering an Amazing Love Life ~Make Your Own Life Rules: How & Why ~What Does a Simply Luxurious Life Look and Feel Like? ~A Powerful Couple: Boundaries & Vulnerability ~Romantic Love: What It Is & How to Maintain It Petit Plaisir: ~Under the Tuscan Sun: 20th Anniversary Edition by Frances Mayes, (paperback copy) (e-book edition) ~Visit Frances Mayes blog and website here. ~tour the house that was seen in the movie (which was remodeled in 2006) here. So just how slow is slow travel? We can probably all have some kind of similar idea on what slow travel is - being more mindful with how we spend our time travelling, not rushing around to tick off lists of all the sights, and possibly spending longer than usual in one spot - but how slow is slow? Amanda's guests in this episode all have a different take on how we can travel slowly, and her first one is a real champion at it: Jeff Ryan has taken 28 years to hike the Appalachian Trail! Not all at once, of course, but he has learnt some great lessons from these experiences about travelling slowly. Following this she chats with Jeremy and Katie Kloberdanz who are currently travelling full time and have used this experience to figure out the kind of slow travel that works for them. Finally, Amanda talks with Lola Akinmade-Åkerström who has quite a different way of approaching slow travel, and one that has a lot of merit, as you can use her strategy even if you don’t have a whole of time to travel. This week we feature the second set from the band's 15th Anniversary show which took place on June 8th, 1980 at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado in Boulder Colorado. A very nice 'Feel Like A Stranger' opens things up, and I think it contains more than its usual share of Garcia explorations.. 'Ship of Fools' follows, it always struck me as almost anthem-like in how it skates over the edges of politics... much needed these days.. 'Estimated Prophet' marks the start of the meat of this set.. the jam gets out there quickly and before we know it Garcia leads us into the 'Eyes of the World' that follows. This version is a real scorcher.. blasting along before shifting into the rhythms that flow into Drums and Space.. 'Saint of Circumstance' leads into a quieter but beautiful 'Black Peter'.. Sugar Mag ends the set, but the boys return for a double encore, which reaches it's apex with a nice 'Brokedown Palace'. Just as sure as a woman's MENstruation is a given and(for life-until her her 'change of life' aka "MENOPAUSE occurs); she will need to learn how to deal with her monthly. And in addition to her menstruation and menopause, women need to learn and know "men" (too)-for her emotional, spiritual and mental continuity and flow... In this digital day and age where women have taken control of their lives, and livelihood's far up and over in ways that make the women's liberation movement look like a primitive June Cleaver episode, women (now, more than ever) need to know the signs of one of the worse traits in men: Misogyny. While not all men are misogynists; the scary part about it is that misogynistic behaviors in most often times isn't as laid out on the table as one would think. While this particular podcast isn't as extensive as I should have made it, and because I am a writer-conditioned to reach for my pen (or keyboard) before the tedious setup to record; I took a moment to interject this necessary piece of pod and direct my listeners to excerpts from my (not yet published) book titled: "Feel Like a Lady, Deal Like a Man - Tips & Secrets on Everything from Self Esteem, Friends, Love, Sex and Men." There, I have a VERY informative chapter on misogyny and the mechanics and makings of it. After listening to the pod, tap in to the blog to get enlightened and ennobled ► https://goo.gl/PciTbK
