Emelie Forsberg is one of the great trail runners of the last two decades. In the early 2010s, Emelie was a dominant force on the racing circuit, accumulating wins and podium performances at some of the sport's most important races. Emelie was part of the early Salomon trail running team that, in many ways, ushered in the modern era of the sport and she became one of the most impactful athletes during that time. While she's remained around the community all along, Emelie de-prioritized running for several years to focus on starting and building a family. Now a mother of three, Emelie is ready to re-prioritize racing again, starting at Transvulcania a few weeks ago where she finished on the podium with a very strong third-place performance. Emelie has also been a key contributor to two ambitious startups in the sport, Moon Valley Nutrition and NNormal. This is her first appearance on the podcast. Why This Episode Matters:This episode is a deep, grounded reminder that longevity in music doesn't come from chasing trends or algorithms. It comes from doing the work, living life, and letting experience shape the sound. Recorded in person at Nothing_Neue's Brooklyn studio, the conversation is reflective, practical, and quietly powerful.Who is Nothing_Neue:Nothing_Neue is a Brooklyn-based producer and artist whose work sits at the intersection of broken beat, soul, hip-hop, and experimental rhythm. Alongside his own artistic output, he works within the music tech world, giving him a rare dual perspective on creativity, industry pressure, and identity. What We Dive Into:* Why living life is essential to making meaningful music* The danger of chasing “radio friendly” or algorithm-approved sounds* Separating your artistic identity from your day job* Morning practice, discipline, and removing creative pressure* Letting unfinished ideas have value instead of forcing outcomes* Why support has to be active, not passive* Choosing an unconventional path and accepting unconventional resultsThree Key Takeaways:* You can't skip life and expect great art: Music gets better when it's informed by lived experience, not constant output.* Unconventional paths come with unconventional timelines: If you choose authenticity, you have to accept results that don't mirror anyone else's.* Practice removes pressure: When music has a guaranteed place in your day, everything else becomes bonus time. Before You Go:If you've been forcing productivity or measuring your work against someone else's success, take a step back. Build your walls, rooms, and houses before worrying about the final home. Progress isn't always loud.Chapters:0:00 – In-studio intro from Brooklyn0:57 – D'Angelo, life experience, and making music too close to the work2:46 – Why living life improves creativity4:04 – Gym vs bike analogy for creative process4:46 – Printing demos and listening away from the studio6:45 – Distance, objectivity, and breaking critical habits9:28 – Substances, creativity, and emotional avoidance11:42 – Pain, avoidance, and emotional honesty13:48 – Family, mortality, and confronting old wounds16:55 – Reprioritizing time, discipline, and energy19:57 – Discovering The Big Leap and the upper-limit problem24:38 – Self-imposed ceilings and early musical validation28:46 – Playlist Retreat, imposter syndrome, and belonging32:54 – Music as a communal experience36:12 – Letting ego step aside for collaboration40:41 – Translating inspiration into technique45:24 – How Nothing Neue practices instruments48:54 – Learning taste, preference, and musical language52:02 – Weed, reading, and rethinking time55:18 – Walls, Rooms, Houses, Homes creative framework58:53 – Morning practice and removing pressure1:03:18 – Weekday vs weekend creative routines1:05:24 – Recent releases and upcoming remixes1:06:27 – Favorite hardware and inspirations1:07:41 – Artists that changed his thinking1:07:57 – Best free tools and YouTube as education1:12:55 – Learning fundamentals vs chasing shortcuts1:17:44 – Rapid-fire questions1:18:33 – Loneliness in the music industry1:20:06 – Underrated “product” for creatives1:21:26 – Advice ignored and advice worth ignoring1:23:24 – Authenticity over chasing radio success1:24:40 – Undoing algorithms and passive consumption1:27:21 – Active support, community, and closing thoughts1:29:02 – Final recap and ProducerHead outroList of References from the Interview:Songs / Artists* D'Angelo* Lyric JonesBooks* Making Records by Phil RamoneHardware / Tools* SP-404* Alpha Juno* SeratoConnect with Nothing_Neue:* YouTube: @NothingNeue* Instagram: @nothing_neue* Spotify: Nothing_Neue* Apple Music: Nothing_NeueConnect with Toru:* Website: torubeat.com* Instagram: @torubeat* YouTube: @torubeat* Spotify: Toru* Apple Music: ToruCredits:This episode was co-produced, engineered and edited by Matthew Diaz. You're listening to Burnt Toast! I'm Virginia Sole-Smith. Today, my conversation is with the one and only Melani Sanders. Melani is a digital creator and the fearless founder of the We Do Not Care movement. If you are a woman in your 40s, 50s and beyond, you are very likely already in this club. Melani's viral club meeting videos, where she runs down a list of everything "We just do not care about anymore," are the kind of thing that my friends are constantly sharing and dropping in our group chats, and I'm sure it's the same for you. Melani perfectly articulates the pressures we're under, and when she names it, it feels easier to let it go. So I loved this conversation. Welcome to the Burnt Toast chapter of the We Do Not Care Club. Let's get this meeting started. If you enjoy this conversation, a paid subscription is the best way to support our work!Join Burnt Toast!
“Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.’” (Mark 8:34 NLT) The cross isn’t something to take lightly, even in casual conversation. Sometimes people say, “We all have our crosses to bear,” or “My cross is my supervisor at work,” or “My cross is this health problem,” or “My cross is this relative.” They mistake the cross and what it represents for a minor annoyance or a pet peeve. And in doing so, they lose the meaning of the cross. If you were living in first-century Jerusalem and saw someone surrounded by Roman guards and carrying a cross through the streets, you would know exactly what was happening. You would know that person was on his way to be crucified. Someone carrying a cross was about to die. So, when Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me” (Mark 8:34 NLT), His disciples would have understood exactly what He meant. Taking up the cross speaks of dying to ourselves and wanting God’s will more than our own. It does not mean that your life is ruined when you decide to walk with God. Far from it. Jesus said, “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10 NLT). But that’s on His terms, not ours. He didn’t mean, “My purpose is to fulfill their every wish.” The reality is that, apart from Jesus, no one knows what a rich and satisfying life is. Those who try to pursue it usually end up following their selfish instincts. And that never results in lasting richness or satisfaction. What Jesus meant was, “My purpose is to help them experience a life they didn’t know was available to them.” And the way to experience that life is to desire God’s will more than you desire your own. Jesus said, “If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it” (Mark 8:35 NLT). That means adjusting your expectations. Recognizing your limited perspective on what life can be. Reprioritizing what’s important to you. Embracing the life Jesus offers, even when you don’t know where it will lead or what it will require of you. Taking up your cross means giving up your ideas of what a rich and satisfying life is. Taking up your cross ultimately requires a giant leap out of your comfort zone. Are you taking up your cross and following Jesus? If so, you’ll find that it impacts and influences every aspect of your life. The result will be life as it was meant to be lived: in the perfect will of God. Reflection question: What would taking up your cross look like in your life? Christmas morning can easily become about exhaustion, expectations, and excitement—but Matthew 2:10–11 reminds us that true joy is found in worshiping Jesus first. By intentionally centering Christmas morning on Christ, families can experience deeper peace, joy, and meaning that lasts far beyond the presents under the tree. Highlights The Magi modeled Christmas worship by rejoicing, bowing, and offering their treasures to Jesus. Holiday exhaustion can distract us, but worship refocuses our hearts on what matters most. Keeping Christ central requires intentional planning, just like other Christmas traditions. Simple practices—reading Luke 2, singing hymns, or praying together—anchor the day in truth. Family traditions can joyfully point children to Jesus without removing the magic of Christmas. Reprioritizing schedules may feel uncomfortable, but it reflects the sacrificial heart of the Gospel. Honoring Jesus on Christmas morning creates opportunities to witness to others through love and example. Wrap up stories for loved ones, tuck a book into your own nightstand, and join us in celebrating the wonder of giving this Christmas! Full Transcript Below: Emphasizing Christ on Christmas Morning By: Peyton Garland Bible Reading: “When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:10-11 (NIV) If we’re honest, most of us will admit that once Christmas morning arrives, we are utterly exhausted. Whether we are parents who stayed up all night putting together toys with hundreds of tiny pieces, we’ve spent the last week scrambling for last-minute gifts, or we are entertaining guests over the holiday, we have pushed our bodies to the limit. They quickly tell on us, eyes heavy, mind screaming for coffee, slippers dragging the floor. Amid this busy season, how can we ensure that Christ remains the center of Christmas morning, bringing us peace, joy, and hopeful energy far superior to our dark roast brew? How can we approach Christmastime so we enjoy all the festive traditions yet keep the manger the main thing? Thankfully, the answer isn’t a deep secret, and it’s what most of us do well, almost too well, this time of year. Planning. Conscientious, motivated planning. No doubt, we go to great detail to collaborate with friends concerning the annual tacky Christmas sweater party. We ensure that we pack and donate at least one Operation Christmas Child box per family member. We attend our little niece’s Nutcracker performance, a bouquet of festive roses in hand. We manage to balance all of the holiday’s hustle and bustle because we hold ourselves accountable to what we value most. Value Christ above all else this Christmas morning by grabbing a calendar and listing out exactly how your family will engage in holiday celebrations centered on Jesus. Invite your family to sit down with you and toss around ideas for which celebratory traditions sound best for both the children and adults. A few creative ideas include: Gathering at the dining room table to read Luke 2 before opening presents or eating Christmas breakfast/brunch. Playing Christmas hymns in the background as everyone eats breakfast. Adding a “Happy Birthday, Jesus” cake to the breakfast menu, letting everyone sing Happy Birthday to the greatest Birthday Boy in history. (I know a family who does this each Christmas, and their four children love it!) Before opening gifts, have everyone take turns sharing why Jesus remains the greatest gift in their heart and life. Placing a nativity scene at the foot of the Christmas tree before eating breakfast or opening gifts. (Placing a nativity scene at the foot of the Christmas tree is an old Catholic tradition that I learned from my husband’s family, and though my husband, son, and I are non-denominational, it is a dear tradition we honor each year.) If Santa visits your children, have Santa write a note to them, celebrating the ways they have grown in character that year while also sharing that he, too, knows that Christ is most important on Christmas Day. (Remember, little hearts that lean into magic will lean into miracles, so don’t cut the miracles short!) I pray these ideas spark creativity as you pray about and consider the Holy Spirit’s leading in how to best honor and praise Jesus on Christmas morning. But I also pray that you recognize that honoring Jesus on Christmas morning might mean you must reprioritize other things. Perhaps extended family members who typically join you for a casual Christmas breakfast at 9 can come over for a Christmas brunch at 11 (so your family has a quiet time of worship beforehand). However, if they are interested in joining your “Happy Birthday, Jesus” celebration, they can come over whenever is best for your family. Bonus: this is a great opportunity to love on your family members who aren’t believers! If your kiddos are accustomed to starting Christmas morning by seeing what Santa brought, I encourage you not to take away from that joy, but to reposition it. Explain to them ahead of time that since Christmas is about Jesus, we will celebrate Him first, then see what Santa brought. Having this conversation in advance allows little hearts to anticipate a schedule change. This gives them room to ask questions to better understand the purpose behind this new tradition. These new shifts might be uncomfortable or make little ones a bit fussy at first, but remember, the Gospel had uncomfortable beginnings, as a teenage girl gave birth among cattle and the Savior of the world was placed in a trough of prickly hay. May we truly adore Him as we sacrifice our schedules to put Him first this Christmas. Intersecting Faith & Life: Even after Christmas has passed, sit down with your family to discuss ways to continue keeping Christ the center of your days. Consider a daily family devotional or prayer time. Allow the children to include their own ideas. Hey Friends, It's February, which means Valentine's Day is upon us—but more importantly, it marks the one-year anniversary of my first book, Life is Messy, God is Good! Looking back over the past year, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for the friends and family who have walked this journey with me. Whether you bought the book, shared it with a friend, left a review, hosted a book launch party, or prayed for my words to make an impact—you've been part of this crazy adventure, and I couldn't be more thankful. Maybe it's the nostalgia of this milestone, or maybe it's just menopause brain fog (let's be honest, probably both), but I'm feeling all the feels. So, this week on MESSmerized, I'm doing something a little different—no guest, just me and the mic! That's right, I'll be having a conversation (with myself, as one does) about three key areas where I believe we need to give ourselves permission to pivot. These thoughts stem from a women's leadership conference where I recently spoke about the importance of: ✅ Redefining success ✅ Reprioritizing our days ✅ Doing things that don't always make sense And since we're celebrating my book's anniversary, I'll also share a few stories straight from its pages—because what better time to reflect on this wild ride? So, tune in, laugh with me, and let's get personal. And if this episode speaks to you, I'd love for you to share it with a friend. Thanks for showing up each week and walking this road with me. I'm in it with you! All things Cynthia Yanof Grab your copy of Life is Messy, God is Good!

This is a re-release of episode 745: "getting out of survival mode" because I had a microphone issue and didn't want to ghost you on the final episode of the "grounding yourself after a Trump win" series. But this one felt relevant to me - and hoping it can help someone if you're feeling the same.Escaping the cycles of chronic stress... well... sucks. I often want to reach for things that further disconnect me, when in reality, the way out is through connecting more intentionally and deliberately with my current self in what is affecting me, how it's affecting me, and what I NEED, instead of want.If you're in survival mode currently. I am with you. We will get out of it, in due time. Don't do more than is necessary and remember that you got this, cutie.RESOURCES: https://www.verywellmind.com/chronic-stress-3145104WATCH: www.youtube.com/juliemericaGET A MONTHLY NOTE FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comBUY SOME MERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/make-your-damn-bed-podcast?ref_id=27657TUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Matthew 5:23-26 New King James Version 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.

A July 2021 diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer at the age of 43 completely changed Dr. Yi-wen Huang's life. In this episode, Yi-wen talks about how she has reprioritized what is important in her life given her diagnosis. Telling her two children about her cancer was difficult, but the entire family has found silver linings in her diagnosis. Yi-wen has already had a number of treatment plans and talks about her decision making process and the positive experience she had as a participant in a clinical trial. She also sums up some of the learnings she's gathered as she grapples with uncertainty. Key highlights: Reprioritizing life after a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis Navigating clinical trials and contributing to science Communicating a cancer diagnosis to loved ones and finding silver linings Life lessons learned in the face of uncertainty About our guest: Dr. Yi-wen Huang is a stage IV HER2+ metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patient. Her diagnosis in July 2021 at age 43 turned her life up-side-down. She has kept a positive outlook despite setbacks on the cancer journey. Yi-wen has a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Harvard University, worked in environmental and biotech instrumentation companies in the Bay Area before the diagnosis. She enjoys her current "retirement" filled with parenting duties, family time, pottery, running and self care (including continuous treatments). Key Moments: 7 minutes 10 seconds: Staying at work after a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis - I think the fact that it metastasized made it easy to decide my priorities. I was in a lab and thought, “What am I doing here? Is this how I'm going to spend the rest of my life or time? Like any minute of it?” I don't want to be away from my kids and family. So it made it easier to prioritize. 26 minutes 30 seconds: On how she got involved in a clinical trial - So when I found out it went to the brain, I immediately emailed both my UCSF and Stanford doctors to see if they had ideas or thoughts. The UCSF doctor actually had this clinical trial and encouraged me to come in, and then I qualified. There are different types of clinical trials, different phases, and I was on a Phase 2 trial that means there was no control group yet. So everybody gets the medication, and they want to see how well it works. I actually really enjoyed my experience on the clinical trial. 39 minutes 40 seconds: After telling her kids she had cancer - Pretty quickly life went back to normal. We live as normal a life as we can with the difference being that I'm a stay at home mom now, not a career woman. My kids will actually tell you that cancer is not all bad. They say we're much closer now. We don't talk about the future, we just enjoy all the moments we're together. 45 minutes: Life lessons learned by living with uncertainty - My biggest lesson is to enjoy the moment. Enjoy your life all the time, every day. It's a privilege and don't think about how long, how much. Just take now. Take as much as you can, and live it day by day, moment by moment. Enjoy it to the fullest. Are you ready for a brand new life rhythm? Today's guest Kristen Rzasa brings a unique approach to entrepreneurship. She's a life and business strategist and helps her clients find balance that leads to greater success. Kristen's brings her corporate and entrepreneurial experience to everything she does. Her corporate job was with Daimler Chrysler and she had a side hustle too. When she found herself outside of corporate, she went into fulltime entrepreneurship. After years of being driven, and successful she realized she was burned out and in danger of breaking down. Kristen made another big shift. That's where conversations about life rhythm began. She explains the 4 components that help her understand her client's priorities. It's eye-opening to hear how she can discover where things are out of alignment. You'll love the example Nancy shares. What if we said, “it's not a priority” instead of “I don't have time?” What would change for you? It's time to create a new rhythm in our lives. That begins with living our values.
