What do you get when you mix Puritan values, Goonie level booby traps, and Bob Villa Carpentry skillz, that's right you get the bungalow on the bough, the lifted loft, Adventureland's own deciduous dwelling. An experience proving that; you can take the château out of Switzerland, but you cant take the family out of this flophouse. You guessed it, were hugging bark at Swiss Family Treehouse. The attraction based on a movie that came out when you weren't yet a twinkle in your granny's eye, and speaking of old folks homes; Today were climbing steps and singing "Oh Christmas Tree" like our grand pappy did; while hiding from tigers, pirates, and their annoyingly precocious son Francis up in a big softwood sapling. This is the first walkthrough attraction for us drunkards at The Dark Ride, so tie them laces, you really don't want to trip over your Keds and plunge down from this six story concrete conifer. Will the additional steps make our hearts soar with the promise of views to tommorowland, or will all this extra exercise make us want to stay grounded next time? ....There is only one way to find out. Tonight, by listener request, we'll read the opening to Swiss Family Robinson, a novel by Johann David Wyss, about a Swiss family shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Australia. This episode first aired in February 2020. Wyss, a Swiss pastor, originally wrote this book to entertain and instruct his four sons. Years later, one of his sons, persuaded his father to allow him to complete and edit the unfinished manuscript. It was published in Zurich in 1812. — read by M — Support us: Listen ad-free on Patreon Get Snoozecast merch like cozy sweatshirts and accessories Learn more about your ad choices. http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Join us as we head to the Magic Kingdom to walk and review Swiss Family Treehouse on this episode of Attraction Checklist. Photo by John B. deHaas. Attraction audio recorded on July 15, 2022. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we visit Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World to experience the Swiss Family Treehouse. The guide map describes this attraction saying, “Explore the treehouse inspired by the classic Disney film.” There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and there is no Thrill Level notes. Before we start climbing stairs, here are five fast facts about the Swiss Family Treehouse at Magic Kingdom. 1. Swiss Family Treehouse is an Magic Kingdom opening day attraction, opening with the park on October 1, 1971. 2. The treehouse is based on the 1960 Walt Disney film Swiss Family Robinson. 3.The summit of the treehouse is 6 stories high and guests must climb 116 stairs to reach it! 4. While the tree looks very real, it is actually made up of steel, concrete and stucco. 5. There are 330,000 leaves on the Swiss Family Treehouse and each one is fabricated to withstand the weather and winds so they don't fall off the tree. Let's climb the Swiss Family Treehouse. Joining me today is John B. deHaas and after our adventures we'll give you our thoughts on this attraction. This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we experience Swiss Family Treehouse at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney World Railroad is Back...with an All-New VoiceoverThe WDW railroad was an original opening-day attraction in 1971 and it's back with a completely refreshed track and another new surprise...one you may or may not like.Walt Disney Imagineering introduced a new voice to share stories as the train circles Magic Kingdom Park. Disney's release stated that the narration is "a voice our guests can envision and resonate with. Someone who grew up on Main Street, U.S.A., dreaming of the day they'd be on the railroad. They've now achieved that dream, and they know everyone and everything at Magic Kingdom … an unofficial mayor of sorts." For us, the jury's still out on whether or not this was a good thing as my initial reaction is that I don't care for the PeopleMover vibe on Walt Disney World Railroad. So what do you think? Is the new voiceover a great addition or an unnecessary distraction?--Chef Mickey's transitions back to buffet-style dining March 1Starting March 1, 2023 Chef Mickey's will go back to buffet-style dining, something many fans have been waiting for as they enjoy either breakfast or dinner at this popular character dining location in Disney's Contemporary Resort.-- So What's Ahead for 2023? Disneyland Adventureland Treehouse will Return with a New Look in 2023There are more details about the future of the treehouse in Adventureland at Disneyland park. When it reopens in 2023 the Adventureland Treehouse will be themed after Walt Disney's Swiss Family Robinson tree house--just as it is in Walt Disney World. This is likely because Disney is working on a remake of the 1960 movie as a new Swiss Family series on Disney+.The renewed treehouse will have new environments created among the branches of the giant tree on the shores of the Jungle River. From the mother's music den to the young sons' nature room to the teenage daughter's astronomer's loft, everything is created from found objects, natural resources, and pure ingenuity (just like the Disney fairies do). More news to come as it's released--Walt Disney World Pool Closure The Oak Manor leisure pool in Magnolia Bend at Disney's Port Orleans Resort Riverside was recently closed for a brief refurbishment.Ol' Man Island and other leisure pools around the resort will remain open and available. Despite it being election week that featured a freak all day snow storm, Deb & Kev are spending this Thursday talking about;Deb trying to remember the difference between Anne of Green Gables, Swiss Family Robinson and Little house on the Prairie while apologizing profusely and questioning whether or not her vote really counted. Kev reads a listener email on the air that officially confirms that Deb & Kev have absolutely no idea what they're talking about while wondering whether or not he should start an OnlyFans account. As always, special thanks to Lauren Taylor for the episode art work and Gwyneth Galvin and BenSound www.bensound.com for providing the voiceover and music for the intro and outro!
Our Disney themed week begins with a review of 1960's SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON. After their ship is wrecked on a deserted tropical island, a family is forced to make a new home whilst simultaneously fending off a menagerie of dangerous animals and evading a band of cut-throat pirates. For many, this story will occupy a special nostalgic place in their heart and it's true that the plot and incredible production design still impress, whilst the presence of the great John Mills compensates for the painful performance from Ken Corcoran but unfortunately the distressing and frequent scenes of animal cruelty render this once classic family movie unwatchable. Our review is great though. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne audiobook. A story of castaways, similar to Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson, this book details the escape from Civil War-era Richmond, Virginia, of five Northern men who dared to go aloft in a balloon in the midst of a hurricane. Deposited on a lonely island in the Pacific, they make do with Yankee ingenuity where Chance has left them nothing. Only later do they find they have a hidden benefactor: Captain Nemo, of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, who resides, alone, secretly on the island. In time, the tiny colony becomes so prosperous that it is able to rescue another castaway from an island a hundred miles away. But all their work will come to naught - their island's volcano is about to awake!
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss audiobook. The Swiss Family Robinson has delighted generations of readers with its exciting tale of a family which, though shipwrecked, displays “the right stuff” and builds a charming colony that later, they do not want to leave. Cut off from the comforts and companionship of other humans, they use a familiarity with natural history and biology to find the resources and build the tools to construct a canoe, weave cloth, irrigate a garden, and turn an immense hollow tree into a lofty house with a spiral staircase. They domesticate buffaloes, wild asses, and monkeys. They establish farms and plantations. And finally, they have a terrifying encounter with natives from a nearby island. Johann David Wyss, the author, did not live to complete his tale. Storytellers over the years have injected so many episodes into the various versions that probably none closely match the original. (Indeed, the Baroness de Montholieu expanded the book from two volumes into five when she translated it into French.) This effort was re-translated into English in 1849 by W.H.G. Kingston, abridging the edition severely. It follows the British sensibilities of the period in terms of sentence structure and emphasis.
In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Peter Parkour retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. The Scarlet Witch makes appearances at a meet and greet in the middle of the land. – https://twitter.com/Disneyland/status/1522656319395835905 As we have been following for the last few episodes, changes are finally visible for the treehouse in Adventureland. The rope bridge that guests crossed over the path to enter the attraction has been taken down, and the tree in the middle of the path which housed the stairs to the bridge has also started to be dismantled. Still no word from Disney on what the re-theme for this former Tarzan's Treehouse and before that Swiss Family Robinson treehouse will be. – https://www.micechat.com/321168-disneyland-news-update-star-wars-construction-change/ Last week was May the 4th, when Star Wars fans have a day of celebration for the universe that they know and love. Disneyland had two of their Star Wars Nite after-hours parties, with one more to come on May 27th this month. Disney is rolling out a virtual queue system for guests to use through the Disneyland mobile app to grab a spot for the show. Guests will need to have entered Disney California Adventure on a one-park ticket, or Disneyland on a park hopper ticket to be able to get the reservation in the virtual queue. The virtual queue will open at noon every day the show runs. Guests will receive notifications 45 minutes before the show starts to head to either a blue or yellow gate to enter the seating area. Guests can still walk up to see the show, but reservations are highly recommended. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/04/dazzling-world-of-color-returns-on-april-22-to-disney-california-adventure-park/ Character meet and greets started up again this week, without Genie+ required like in Walt Disney World. Since January, the Florida parks have offered four different meet and greets as part of the Genie+ service. So, at Disneyland, guests can now get up close to their favorites to get hugs, high fives, and autographs for the first time since the pandemic began in 2020. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/04/13/disneyland-wont-use-genie-for-character-meet-and-greet-photo-ops/ For those of you who like spoilers, the Disney Parks Blog posted a preview of the Main Street Electrical Parade, along with footage of the new float. Along with the new float for the finale, the drum sign that Mickey rides on has also been updated with “50 Years,” noting the 50th anniversary of the classic parade. The reimagined “To Honor America” float looks great with the new Mary Blair inspired Disney characters and fits right in with the rest of the parade. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/04/first-look-at-the-new-grand-finale-in-the-main-street-electrical-parade-debuting-april-22-at-disneyland-park/ MiceChat had some eyes in the skies recently that gives us some insight on the progress being made in Mickey's Toontown! We have the article linked in the show notes showing that Chip and Dale's Treehouse has been removed, and all of the paving, along with the two fountains in the land have been removed. The gazebo in front of the City Hall in Toontown has also been taken down. – https://www.micechat.com/319510-disneyland-update-pruning-disneyland-treehouses/ Tarzan's Treehouse has been under scrims since last September when it abruptly closed to guests. Disney had not addressed why this was, until this week. The current plan for the attraction, which has stood in Adventureland since 1962, is to remove the entrance to the attraction which blocks guest flow, and to eventually re-theme it to something else. MiceChat speculated one of the options would be back to the Swiss Family Robinson since Disney+ was working on a series based on the classic, but our sources say that series has been put on hold for now. Another option is theming it to Encanto. We will keep you updated when we have more solid information on what it will transform into. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/04/18/disneyland-to-give-tarzans-treehouse-a-new-theme/ One of the most iconic songs from the Disney Parks has been inducted into the Library of Congress. “it's a small world” was first heard on the attraction at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. The fair had the theme of “Peace Through Understanding,” which fits right in with the attraction that was moved to Disneyland after the fair ended. The song was one of 25 recordings “worthy of preservation for all time based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation's recorded sound heritage.” – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/04/14/disneylands-iconic-its-a-small-world-song-inducted-into-library-of-congress-music-registry/ The Magic Key Terrace continues its transformation slowly. New chandeliers and lighting has been installed, along with faux stained glass, a new fountain, wrought-iron fixtures, and more. The theme is highly inspired by peacocks for the interior, covered portion, and by cats on the exterior portion. Overall, this is a nice improvement to the area and makes it feel more welcoming. – https://www.micechat.com/319510-disneyland-update-pruning-disneyland-treehouses/ Scaffolding has come down from around Stage 12 in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot area of Disney California Adventure. The building has been repainted and a meet and greet for Goofy has been placed here for the Food and Wine Festival. This was the area where Captain Marvel's airplane and meet and greet was previously located. – https://www.micechat.com/319510-disneyland-update-pruning-disneyland-treehouses/ Fans of Disney Pixar's Turning Red have a lot of merchandise options around the parks. Some of the items that are available include a Turning Red Minnie Ear set, some amazingly comfy looking slippers, plushes and more. Some of the most popular items like the 4*Town band shirts have sold out, but will hopefully return in the future. – https://www.micechat.com/319350-disneyland-merchandise-update-stitch-toys/ When Disneyland closed in 2020, the Disney Parks YouTube channel posted a video of the Magic Happens parade. This week, Disney has removed that video from their channel, with no explanation of why. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/04/disney-removes-official-video-of-magic-happens-parade-at-disneyland-from-youtube/ Discussion Topic: Nebraska State Poet and Disneyland Fan Matt Mason At The Corner of Fantasy and Main: Disneyland, Midlife, and Churros – https://theoldmillpress.com/at-the-corner-of-fantasy-and-main.html Blog – http://matt.midverse.com/ Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/NeSP3

It was really hard to talk about anything other than the treehouse. We thought we loved this movie but really we just LOVED that treehouse, or to put it simply: "Look, I'm not an ostrich expert." It is a weird outlier for this podcast but both Celey & Nora were obsessed as kids and we just had to revisit this Disney flick from 1960. Spoiler: the animals and many humans are not treated...great.

Both are excellent, but the difference in voice actors really made a difference in how much we liked some of the characters.) We've also got information on the freebies you can get by signing up to be Patreons for Adam Warren and Megatokyo. And we may be doing some research to see if Chris Evans looked as good in 2007 as he does in last year's movie Knives Out. (It's a tough job, but we do this for you, listeners. All five of you.) Ursula Vernon's twitter handle is @UrsulaV, and someone helpfully compiled her insanely entertaining Swiss Family Robinson live-tweets here. https://twitter.com/i/events/901828894952538113 This week's outro music is a clip from Technopop 7b by TeknoAxe. https://youtu.be/ja9nTdQpA7s

In Episode 28 behind the Secret Door, Alicia and Frances take a break from politics and discuss the latest in pop culture and talk about what's going on in their lives. They also cover the infamous Meghan Markle and Prince Harry interview. Pepe Le Pew is being removed from the next installment of Space Jam and any other future projects by Warner Brothers. Alicia discusses how Pepe helped normalize rape culture, while Frances remains skeptical that this is true. Disney has also chosen to make a decision in witness to their former cartoons' captions and narratives. They will be removing access to “Dumbo”, “Peter Pan”, “Swiss Family Robinson”, & “The Artistocats” from children-only profiles. If an adult logs into an adult profile, then the movies will be available, but a warning will be presented. The idea is to still allow access to the movies to audiences, but it allows parents the opportunities to teach their kids why certain parts of the movie are inappropriate. Dr. Seuss Enterprises has decided to stop publishing six books including “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” and “If I Ran the Zoo.” It portrays people in ways that are hurtful and inconsiderate. As Alicia's former co-worker explains, the images of the Asian community in “Mulberry Street” were portrayed in a way that is rude and inaccurate for that time. This includes out of date wardrobe, coloring of yellow skin, and long hair. All choices that were not realistic for the time when it was printed in the 1930s, thus providing proof to the stereotype and harmfulness of the book. Dr. Seuss Enterprises will continue to publish all the other books and will only stop publication for the six that were deemed inappropriate. Of course, Alicia's sweet little church ladies (SLCL's) on FB had a lot to say about this. Tune in to find out their take as well. Finally, in the interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left a lot to be discussed on Twitter and on Secret Door to the Left. Harry hinted to racist comments from his father, Prince Charles. The main concern was what color Archie would be when he was born. Meghan unfortunately not only dealt with racism within the family, but she also experienced brutality from the press in the UK. While she was pregnant with Archie, she evidently experienced suicidal thoughts and warned Harry that she should get help in order to prevent anything bad from happening. Unfortunately, she was not given the help she needed. Ultimately, the lack of help from the family, cruelty from the press, and racism that lead Harry and Meghan to decide to come to America. As always, Alicia and Frances have their thoughts on what happened. TikTok recommendations for this week include: @thejeffreymarsh, @worldsokaitest, @killersundy, and @bhambluedot. What do you think about the most recent victims of cancel culture? What did Alicia and Frances miss this week in pop culture? Do you think Meghan and Harry feel safer now? They use the word “paddywhacker” in a line of dialogue in this movie that feels awkwardly patriotic for what is on the one hand a Catholic feast day, and on the other hand is a college binge day. The Mysterious Island - Jules Verne - Book 3, Part 2 Title: The Mysterious Island Overview: The Mysterious Island (French: L'Île mystérieuse) is a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1875. The original edition, published by Hetzel, contains a number of illustrations by Jules Férat. The novel is a crossover sequel to Verne's famous Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870) and In Search of the Castaways (1867–68), though its themes are vastly different from those books. An early draft of the novel, initially rejected by Verne's publisher and wholly reconceived before publication, was titled Shipwrecked Family: Marooned with Uncle Robinson, seen as indicating the influence of the novels Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson. Verne developed a similar theme in his later novel, Godfrey Morgan (French: L'École des Robinsons, 1882). The chronology of The Mysterious Island is completely incompatible with that of the original Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, whose plot begins in 1866, while The Mysterious Island begins during the American Civil War, yet is supposed to happen some years after "Twenty Thousand Leagues". MATH: If your child's school is using a common-core-based math curriculum, it may be difficult for you to understand the methodology behind it. So if your child has math assignments sent home with them, you may need a guide. There are plenty of free resources online, like these: https://www.pta.org/home/family-resources/Parents-Guides-to-Student-Success If you want your child to keep working on math assignments at home, the Saxon Math curriculum is really tried-and-true. (Check out those used prices! I've always gotten ones that have about 5 pages written in them in pencil.) Kumon Lowercase Letters: https://amzn.to/2IU0XXL I like the Kumon books because they are pretty. But they are not scripted for parents to explain. That can be frustrating, which is why I start with a Zaner-Bloser book. Once you have the hang of it, you can move on to Kumon. Its new year – the first week of January 1902 and we continue to ride, or rather walk, with Deneys Reitz as he and seven other colleagues have been separated from General Jan Smuts who is on a mission to raid the Cape – and possibly – cause an uprising of Cape Afrikaners. By now Smuts has realised that the idea of Cape Afrikaners rising up is a pipe-dream, but wants to surprise the British close to Cape Town to prove to them that the Boers are still able to strike fear into British citizens. Remember last week we heard how Reitz and his fellow commando members had managed to give the English troops the slip over the Swartbergen somewhere in the Small Karoo to the north of Craddock. The eight had managed to cross the mountains but now had to make a difficult decision. Where the Swartbergen mountains had consisted of a single clearcut barrier … It was getting dark, and a heavy rain began to fall. They continued descending from the Swartbergen and needed to find shelter quickly. When the rain falls in highground, the temperature can slide from a balmy 30 degrees centigrade to a really chilly 12 degrees of less in a matter of half an hour. They found a overhanging rock and rested until daybreak, trying to sleep as the wind whipped rain into their faces. They scrambled down the whole day, until by around four in the afternoon they emerged from the mist and clouds and could see a long narrow canyon ahead. It's sides were enclosed in perpendicular cliffs. Then they spotted huts around 1000 feet below and decided to go ask for directions out of these mountains. They were taking a chance, all eight together descending to the huts. Those with horses left them in a nearby ravine to look after themselves and scrambled down arriving at the huts as the sun sank below the western cliffs. They were faced with a number of huts designed in the Xhosa way but also featuring wattle and daub, the much fancied building technique of the early settlers in the Eastern Cape. “As we approached the huts, a shaggy giant in goatskins appeared and spoke to us in a strange outlandish Dutch…” The stranger was one of the oddest people Reitz had ever met.
