"We're creating that room for people to be in the right place, to meet the right people, to grow their career."From accidental beginnings to intentional leadership – that's the journey so many of us take in the insurance industry. This fascinating conversation with Amy Cooper, founder of RISE and VP of Carrier Practices at Gallagher Bassett, reveals how one organization is transforming the future of insurance talent development.Like most professionals, Amy stumbled into insurance by chance. But what she found was an industry full of opportunity paired with a looming talent crisis. Her response? Creating RISE – now a thriving community of over 7,000 members across 14 countries dedicated to developing the next generation of insurance leaders. The timing couldn't be more critical. As Amy explains, the industry faces a perfect storm: mass retirements accelerated by COVID-19 combined with remote work environments that eliminate organic mentoring opportunities. RISE addresses these challenges by providing free membership and structured development programs that complement technical training with crucial "human skills" development. What makes this conversation particularly valuable is the practical advice for both early-career professionals and companies looking to attract top talent. Amy outlines specific strategies for getting involved with RISE's mentorship programs, educational series, and committees. She also shares insights on how companies can better attract Gen Z through mission-driven storytelling, technological innovation, and meaningful workplace flexibility. The passion behind RISE shines through in Amy's gratitude for the volunteer mentors and board members who make the organization's work possible. Their collective commitment reminds us that while insurance might be an "accidental" career for many, developing the next generation of leaders requires intentional effort from everyone in the industry.Whether you're just starting your insurance journey or looking to give back after years in the field, this episode offers valuable perspective on how we can collectively shape the future of our industry through meaningful connection and growth.Season 9 is brought to you by Berkley Industrial Comp. Study finds job embeddedness, not engagement, drives retention.Know-How KornerWith Donny ShimamotoCenter for Accounting TransformationA new study by Dr. Amy Cooper, CPA, CFE, CGMA, an assistant accounting professor and program director at University of Alaska Fairbanks, challenges conventional wisdom, revealing that job embeddedness—not engagement—is the key to keeping accountants in public firms. MORE: Donny Shimamoto “I assumed smaller firms would foster stronger embeddedness, but my research showed the opposite,” says Dr. Cooper. “Larger firms offer more career mobility, specialization, and structured support, which increase long-term commitment.” While job engagement—enthusiasm for daily tasks—seems important, it did not significantly predict turnover intentions. Instead, employees with deeper professional and community ties were less likely to leave.
People gathered Wednesday at the Minnesota History Center to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Similar events across the country recognized girls and women's achievements in sports and promote equality. Among the honorees in Minnesota is Washburn High School alumnus Amy Cooper. Her list of accolades is long, beginning with her time as a Minneapolis high school athlete. She exceled in swimming, track, basketball and soccer. Then, at Howard University, she became the first soccer player for a Historically Black College and University to earn all-conference honors. She has gone on to create opportunities for other women and women of color as a coach and administrator. Today Amy Cooper works as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration at the University of St. Thomas. She is this year's recipient of the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award, which honors women who have overcome physical challenges in their pursuit of sports and created a path for others. She joins MPR News host Nina Moini to share her story.

Today, Claire Pedrick engages in a lively conversation with Laura Wong and Amy Cooper about their coaching journeys, their love for books, and the insights they gain from literature. They explore how coaching has influenced their lives and careers, share their current reading preferences, and discuss the importance of resilience as depicted in various books. They talk about the value of audiobooks, needing permission to read differently and the transformative power of literature, particularly in coaching and leadership contexts. And how children's picture books have something to teach adults. Takeaways Coaching can significantly impact personal and professional development. Building connections through shared experiences in coaching is invaluable. Reading preferences can vary widely, and it's okay to explore different genres. Resilience is a common theme in literature that resonates with personal experiences. Audiobooks are a valid form of reading and can enhance the experience. It's important to give oneself permission to read in a way that feels right. Sharing book recommendations can enrich one's reading journey. Workbooks serve a different purpose than novels and should be approached accordingly. Reading can be a form of escapism, especially during stressful times. The journey of reading evolves, and it's essential to adapt to one's lifestyle. Listening to audiobooks provides a different mood than reading hard copies. Children's literature can offer profound insights for adult leadership. Kindness in the workplace is essential for a positive culture. Attachment theory is crucial in both parenting and coaching. Understanding personal stories is vital for effective leadership. Vulnerability is a strength that fosters growth and connection. Women in midlife have valuable contributions to make in leadership roles. Adventure and challenges can lead to personal growth and empowerment. Claire Pedrick and Yannick Jacob explore the nuances of coaching, particularly existential coaching. Yannick shares his journey into coaching, emphasizing the importance of meaningful conversations and personal experiences. They discuss the philosophical underpinnings of existential coaching and the significance of personal experience in the coaching process. Hear about the courage required to navigate the complexities of human existence and the role of coaches in facilitating deeper connections with the people we coach. They explore the balance between professional distance and personal connection, the impact of eye contact in virtual settings, and the evolving role of AI in coaching. The dialogue emphasises the need for coaches to cultivate genuine human connections and adapt to the changing landscape of our profession. Takeaways Coaching is about deep, meaningful conversations. Existential coaching is rooted in philosophy. It takes courage to be authentic and human. Personal experience enhances the coaching relationship. Coaches should hold space for the other person's experiences. Existential coaching opens doors beyond traditional methods. Understanding the people we coach requires a willingness to not know. Philosophy invites curiosity in coaching practices. Coaches can help clients navigate life's big questions. You don't need to have experienced a condition to help others. Depth matching is crucial in coaching relationships. Eye contact plays a significant role in engagement during sessions. Presence in coaching involves more than just focusing on the client. AI is changing the coaching landscape, but human connection remains vital. Dissonance can be a powerful tool for unlocking insights. The word “racism” can apply to a specific person or to the social structure, and in our hyper-individualistic culture, the word most commonly devolves to a singular individual who did something obviously prejudiced: Cliven Bundy, the Nevada cattle rancher, Amy Cooper, the New York person who called the cops on a bird-watcher who'd asked her to keep her dog on a leash. Racism is this or that person or particular act or behavior, and it means“bigoted, backward, stupid, and offensive.” But since I'm not backward and bigoted and stupid like them, “I'm not racist.” Convenient for white liberals, but not helpful in repairing the harm. We dive into that wreckage with the brilliant thinker, writer, and teacher, Janine de Novais who explores and engages human liberation as a cultural project. Her book, Brave Community: Teaching for a Post-Racist Imagination, illuminates practices that confront racism and empower and edify everyone involved.

Her concept of a 'spark bird' – the one that ignites a birder's passion is a beautiful anecdote and a metaphor for those transformative moments in life that guide our paths. Rebecca Hieder discusses her article, "A Quaker Guide to Birdwatching: Eight Lessons for Friends and Seekers." This discussion also highlights the importance of respecting nature and the profound joy that can be found in everyday moments of observation. Miche McCall crafted the sound design. #BlackBirdersWeek Tykee James, a Black birder also originally from Philadelphia, opens up about the joys and dangers of birding while Black. In May 2020, a video from Central Park's "The Ramble" went viral, showing a white woman, Amy Cooper, calling the police on a black birdwatcher, Christian Cooper (no relation) after he asked her to leash her dog as required by park rules. Despite his calm approach, Amy escalated the situation by threatening to report an African American man was threatening her life. The incident, captured on video and viewed over 40 million times, sparked widespread discussions about racial bias and the history of false accusations against black individuals. This incident led Tykee and other Black birdwatchers to create Black Birders Week, an event that celebrates diversity in birdwatching and challenges the stereotypes and racial injustices that still exist in outdoor activities. Tykee views the week as a celebration of joy, resilience, and diverse experiences within the Black community. Tykee shares how his experiences with urban birding as a teen exposed him to community connections and the stark realities of racial and environmental injustices. These observations led him to co-found Amplify for the Future and become the president of the DC chapter of the Audubon Society. Tykee is currently part of a campaign to rename the Audubon Society to better reflect its values, acknowledging its historical context. The theme for the 2024 Black Birders Week is "Wings of Justice: Soaring for Change," and it is hosted by Black AF in Stem. You can hear a longer version of Tykee's interview on Episode 59 of Citizens Climate Radio. Reviews and Recommendations In this segment of the Quakers Today podcast, Miche McCall and Peterson Toscano delve into recent book reviews from Friends Journal. Peterson shares his enthusiasm for Ruth Todd's new book Exploring Isaac Penington: Seventeenth-Century Quaker Mystic, Teacher and Activist. He highlights Penington's influential role in early Quakerism and his spiritually led writings, noting Todd's unique approach, including metaphors from nature and experiential exercises for readers. Miche shares their intrigue with Altar to an Erupting Son by Chuck Collins, a novel that challenges notions of pacifism through its provocative opening scene and subsequent exploration of the impact of violence. This leads to a broader discussion on pacifism and activism within the context of creating a better world. Additionally, Peterson is curious about Daybreak, a cooperative board game focused on climate change solutions, emphasizing the game's community-building aspect and eco-friendly design. Miche shares their recommendation of the Headspace app's Sleepcasts, particularly those with a Star Wars theme, highlighting their effectiveness in aiding relaxation and sleep. In May 2020, Amy Cooper had her dog off leash in New York City's Central Park, when a black bird watcher name Christian Cooper asked her to leash her dog. In response, Amy Cooper said she would call the police and tell them that "an African American man" was threatening her. A video of the incident went viral, and "the Central Park Karen" was born. Only, the story was more nuanced than the media had led many to believe about what had really transpired that day, and it was reporter Kmele Foster who dug into this story and found levels of detail which, upon reading it, made Mike rethink his position on this incident. On this episode, I have an incredible conversation with Jenny Booth Potter, a creative producer, storyteller, and co-host of The Next Question, a web series about expanding our imagination for racial justice. She has co-led racial justice trainings across the country for churches and organizations, and is the Chief Content Officer of HerSelf Media, a company that aims to create stories that empower and bring joy to Black women. I recently read her new book, Doing Nothing Is No Longer an Option, and was excited when she agreed to join us on the Sanctuary Woman. We talk a lot about purity culture on this podcast, and I think there is a really interesting thread that comes up in this conversation that I'm glad we pulled on. We talk about intersectionality, parenting, idolizing innocence and protecting it at all costs, and reflecting on our own inner Karen. Today's episode is borrowed from the feed of the great podcast The Fifth Column. Usually hosted by Kmele Foster, Michael Moynihan, and Matt Welch, this episode, which aired in July of 2022, features Kmele and two guests who have become elder statesmen around the persistent issue of race in America: John McWhorter and Glenn Loury. Over the past few years McWhorter, Loury and Foster each have written, discussed and lectured exhaustively on anti-racism, the role race plays in America, and the changing meaning of the word “racism” itself. In this episode, they talk about the inadequacies of regarding people solely by their racial category, the dignity of the individual and what a future might look like if we were to abolish race all together. While all three men bring a contrarian streak to this discussion, you'll find that they have disagreements when it comes to questions of race abolition and the so-called “Racial Reckoning” of 2020. Loury is an economist and professor of social science at Brown University. You can listen to his interview with Bari here. McWhorter is the author of numerous books, including Talking Black and Woke Racism. He's also professor of Linguistics, Philosophy and Music at Columbia University, and a columnist at The New York Times. Since 2015 Kmele Foster has been a prominent voice in a number of discussions about race in America, including his reporting challenging the mainstream media's verdict on Amy Cooper, better known as the Central Park Karen. Brandi is back at it again with another Johnson County murder mystery. How does she keep finding these? Is it because she's the one committing all these murders? Is that why she knows so many details?? (Don't look at me! I'm just asking questions!) Barbara Haddock's death was staged to look like an accident. Barbara lay dead in her garage, under a large amount of firewood. It looked as though she'd been crushed by the firewood. But a closer look revealed a different story. Barbara had been killed by several blows to the back of her head. Then Kristin tells us about the Central Park Karen. On May 25, 2020, Christian Cooper was birdwatching in an area of Central Park known as the Ramble. The Ramble is home to wildlife and delicate plants, and several signs that state that dogs must be kept on a leash. Amy Cooper figured the rules didn't apply to her. When Christian asked her to put her dog on a leash, she got offended. Then she decided to weaponize her white womanhood. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases.
