We're back! We once again disappeared from the internet for a few weeks and we are sorry, but this time away has given us time to catch up on our Anime backlog and be ready for this episode. We noticed something while trying to finish our shows, Anime has some absurdly long titles and the shows themselves typically all follow the same plot. Why is that? We discuss our thoughts on the direction anime has taken, Ninja giving his thoughts on striving to be a better competitor, Sonic the Hedgehog being a fantastic movie, Birds of Prey and more! Before Nintendo dropped the Game Boy there were companies that attempted to make their mark in the gaming industry by creating portable game devices. Some of the companies were Mattel, Hasbro, Milton Bradley, even Nokia made an attempt. Needless to say their systems didn't quite hit the mark and that could have been due to the fact that handheld video gaming has always been a few steps behind their console counterparts. A lot of gamers enjoy their handheld consoles, us included, so we thought we'd take a little stroll through the years and see just how far the handheld gaming market has come. The Controversy of Violence in Video Games

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2019 74:46

As long as the video gaming has been around there has always been titles that have had some sort of violence in them. As technology continues to progress we see a more realistic depiction of violence in video games, such titles as Mortal Kombat X show incredible images of the human body and how they react when they are being dismembered. There seems to be a deliberate artistry having created something beautiful, realistic, and pleasing. During the Renaissance there was a demand for more realistic depictions of the human body, both in proportion and pose, this seems to be the same demand today but in a digital aspect. But this sparks the great controversy in video games, do the violence in video games mean have an impact on the real world? Do they influence terrible thoughts and do they drive people to perform despicable actions? Players know their games are not reality, they become immersed in their world but it is in of itself a false reality. Like how a good book or movie that provides the framework for a world to give the audience a unique viewpoint, games provide a frame for the imagination, while still remaining firmly fictional. But the controversy remains and it does not look like it will end any time soon. This time on the podcast we dive in and talk about violence in video games. The Anime Transition

Anime, you’ve changed! You might have had this thought while looking through the countless anime featuring fanservice, overly sexualizing humor, or a ridiculously dense protagonist: anime is really getting monotonous. Many people who are discovering anime now think that there has never been as much mainstream exposure as there is now, unfortunately they would be wrong. You can go into almost any video store and get the OVA of the week and you couldn't before. But does that mean that shows are flying off of the shelves because the anime is that good? Today we answer that question and go back to the early days of anime and compare it to how it is now. Enjoy the ride, you're in good hands. The History of Role Playing Games

Computers and RPGs have always gone hand-in-hand. Even when the best adventurers could hope for visually was a few letters and numbers on a screen, what better way could there be to handle stats, die-rolls and complex calculations? Soon enough, though, computer RPGs were capable of doing much more. The history of role-playing games begins with an earlier tradition of role playing, which combined with the rulesets of fantasy wargames in the 1970s to give rise to the modern role-playing game. Participants assume the roles of characters and collaboratively create stories. Players determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, they may improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games. Today we dive into our favorite style of geek interaction, Role-Playing Games! Paying to Win

In some multiplayer free-to-play games, players who are willing to pay for special items or downloadable content may be able to gain a significant advantage over those playing for free. We also call these "pay-to-win" games. A common suggestion for avoiding pay-to-win is that payments should only be used to broaden the experience without affecting gameplay, such as buying items that only change the look of a character, item or whatever else that can be changed for cosmetic reasons. But recently the "pay-to-win" market has taken a turn for worse, with companies like EA being charged with promoting gambling and professionals like Plants Vs. Zombies creator George Fan being fired for refusing to implement pay-to-win systems, it might be time to do away with the system all together.
