Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a 1922 silent German horror film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire. Nosferatu was produced by Prana Film and is an unauthorized and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Various names and other details were changed from the novel, including Count Dracula being renamed Count Orlok. Even with several details altered, Stoker's heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. However, several prints of Nosferatu survived, and the film came to be regarded as an influential masterpiece of cinema. Today, Karl from When It Was Cool reviews this, very close to the novel, interpretation of Dracula in Nosferatu (1922). Support us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/wiwcool

Succumb to the Darkness. Written and directed by Robert Eggers, Nosferatu is the gothic horror film starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, and Lily-Rose Depp. It is a remake of the film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922), which was itself an unauthorised adaption of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula (1897). In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter (Hoult) travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok (Skarsgård), a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen (Depp), is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Anna Harding (Emma Corrin). Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control.

A new season of Film Trace is here! This season we will try something a bit different. We are focusing on Visionary Remakes. In each episode, we will watch a remake made in the selected decade and then go back and compare it to the original film. First up, we are covering Nosferatu. This season was inspired by Robert Eggers' remake which came out late last year. The film was a surprise hit at the box office and is currently doing very well on digital release. We will compare the modern Nosferatu with the famous original, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror from 1922. We will also toss in a little of Werner Herzog's remake from 1979.Nosferatu is perhaps the most famous horror character in the history of film. The character was a blatant and conspicuous copy of Dracula, so much so that the original film was ordered destroyed due to copyright violations. We only have it now, because it had been exported from Germany. Eggers brings forward the titular character into the world of Imax Laser and Dolby Atmos. He adds layer upon layer of intricate production and sound design, but the overall feeling is a bit mushy and lukewarm. Eggers decided to shift the main focus from the male protagonist to a female supporting character in the original story. A bizarrely postmodern move from a resolutely modernist director. Nosferatu is perhaps the perfect film to kick off the new season. Why remake a film? What you are bringing to it, what are we losing?

Robert Eggers writes & directs this gothic horror film that is based on Bram Stroker's original 1897 novel, “Dracula” and is a remake of the 1922 silent film, “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”. The film stars Bill Skarsgard, Lily Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Emma Corrin & Wilem Dafoe. In this film, set in the 1830s, a young realtor is sent to an old mansion in order to sell the property. However, little does he know that the buyer is a demonic creature that is forever cursed to walk the Earth as a vampire. This film had been in production since 2015 and was a passion project for Eggers but delayed the film until 2022. The film hit theaters on Christmas Day in 2024 and went on to become the highest grossing film in Eggers' career.

Continuing our trio of episodes this week about the films which adapt Dracula in a very specific but different kind of way. F. W. Murnau's 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was remade in 1979 by now legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog into a contemplative, grim, and lush presentation he called NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE. Distinguishing itself in many ways from its predecessor while still keeping the primary story intact, Herzog's Nosferatu is saturated with a dim and often oppressively bleak outlook. It's given power by a trio of strong performances in the main roles but also has an overt despair that permeates the entire story. Despite that tone, we have a surprisingly laughter-filled conversation about it.Also featuring a Patron-only discussion about the recent awards contender, CONCLAVE, this episode is a disarming amount of fun and we hope you enjoy it.Patron Only Segment: CONCLAVE4:52 - NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

As we prepare for the end of the year -- and for the imminent release of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu -- we're doing a mini-series run through the previous versions of this story. We start by going way back to the silent era of filmmaking with NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR from 1922. In all practical measures, F. W. Murnau's film is an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula with names and key details changed. However, a devastating lawsuit at the time all but obliterated most prints of the film from being shown again. Despite these obstacles, it has not only been a classic cherished for decades by horror fans, but one of the most influential horror films ever made. From Count Orlock's iconic look to the tone and structure of its story, it's almost impossible to ignore the impact of this film. Also featuring a Patron-Only segment where we discuss our thoughts about the recent movie musical blockbuster WICKED, this is a brisk and fun conversation that we really hope you enjoy!Patron Only Segment: WICKED (part one)5:16 - NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORRORSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's nearly Christmas; so we're bringing you some ‘Silent Nights' - first up is 1922's beautifully sinister “Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror”. A film in which we learn the very worst way to cut a slice of bread; that nothing looks more confused than a striped hyena in a German forest; and that when your manager finishes every sentence with an insane cackle, it's probably time to check out your other employment options. This silent occult masterpiece still manages to feel more modern and pacy than a lot of the talkies that followed over the next few decades, and it's imagery remains burned into the collective unconscious. The first feature-length adaptation of “Dracula”, it offers enough variation from its source material to become a story in its own right - with the spectre of plague and contagion married to the concept of the vampire in a way that chills in the light of our own recent history. It's Count Orlok is far removed from the suave romantic figure screen Dracula would become; instead being a near folkloric creature from the other side of the forest, and all the more disturbing for it. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid 101 year-old spoilers and join us.

It's finally here - the most wonderful time of the year - SPOOKY SEASON HAS RETURNED! The Brides kick off their Halloween celebrations with yet another vampire movie, the brilliantly creepy Nosferatu! Released in 1922, F.W. Murnau's deep dive into German Expressionist horror is the first onscreen retelling of Dracula, even though the studio definitely didn't have the rights to Stoker's novel and got sued into bankruptcy by his widow. Seriously: Prana Films closed after this film because she gouged them with legal fees. And for good reason; it's Dracula. No question about it. This is a film we technically shouldn't have, and that transgressive, unsettling quality shows up in every frame. And that's before we even get to Count Orlok! Along the way we chat about the obvious anti-Semitic tropes that surround vampire lore, the baffling choice to sub a hyena for a werewolf, and debate if Herr Knock is a scarier character than Count Orlok. It's honestly closer than you think. Also, would Orlok sound like the Count from Sesame Street, or Count Chocola? Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. 1922. Directed by F.W. Murnau. Written by Henrik Galeen. Starring Max Schreck, Greta Schröder, Gustav von Wangenheim.

1999 was a major year for film. Plenty of beloved blockbusters and future cult classics came from this final year in the 20th century. Now, Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani are here to talk two films from this iconic year in cinema with special guest Lance Langford of The Horror Returns podcast! For the good feature, Adam picked Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai which features Forest Whitaker fighting the mob with a katana in the chillest way possible. Then, Thomas' bad pick End of Days in which Arnold Schwarzenegger fights the devil in the most baffling way possible. Together, our trio spews love for ice cream scooping Frenchmen, wonders how many times Arnold has to jump, makes a big announcement about the podcast and picks the films for next week's episode on Japanese Cinema! Horror movies and music have forged an unholy alliance over many decades – even before cinema’s demons and scream queens actually had their own voices. In 1922, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror premiered with a darkly romantic live orchestral score by Hans Erdmann. The sound of fear can’t be constrained by a single genre or instrument, but at its best, the music is as gripping as the scariest visual, and it is timelessly evocative. Without music in scary movies they probably wouldn't be all that scary. With music being so importan for the genre we decided take a look into the music and sound design in horror and give it the recognition it deserves!
