Our thoughts on the season 2 finale of X-Men '97!
Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel Studios appears to have found the leader of its new mutant team, as Deadline reported last week that Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in the future MCU X-Men film. Sources say Connor went through much the same process as Samara Weaving, who was attached as Emma Frost the week prior, meeting with Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige alongside a group of candidates who tested after the July 4th holiday before the studio settled on him. Neither Marvel nor Connor has confirmed the casting, and the film, written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo, still has no release date. Cyclops has been played on screen before by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, with Marsden set to reprise the role in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the one-billion-dollar mark overseas in just twelve days of release, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach that number abroad behind Avengers: Endgame. The Destin Daniel Cretton film now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, split between $654.3 million domestically and $1.013 billion internationally, which makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time and only the sixteenth ever to clear a billion in foreign markets alone. Universal had a milestone of its own to celebrate, as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of his career ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, while also becoming the biggest IMAX release ever with $289 million, and it still has China to open on Friday. James Gunn spent part of a Threads session last week putting down one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy, telling a fan who asked whether The Batman Part III was being filmed simultaneously with Part II simply, “I can deny.” The theory had gained steam over years of delays, most recently when a redesigned Part II logo appeared to work a Roman numeral III into the artwork, and it offered fans a tidy explanation for why the sequel has taken so long to arrive. In reality, Part II only began principal photography in London in June, and Warner Bros. has already pushed the film from October 2027 to February 18, 2028. Sony and Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda has cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf under a multi-picture deal, with Severance's Dichen Lachman playing Impa and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski reported as a queen character. The late Sam Neill also filmed an undisclosed role before his death on July 13, marking one of the final screen performances of his career.Gareth Edwards has exited Universal and Amblin's untitled Jurassic World Rebirth sequel over creative differences, with the studios now searching for a replacement; David Koepp's script is finished and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all still expected back for a 2027 shoot.A24 released the full trailer for Primetime, the Lance Oppenheim drama that Robert Pattinson produces and stars in as To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, in theaters September 25.Lionsgate has confirmed that Michael 2 is targeting a production start toward the end of this year or in early 2027, with the sequel to this year's Michael Jackson biopic aiming for a 2028 release.Lionsgate is also developing a new Leprechaun film written by horror veterans Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, reviving a franchise that ran eight movies between 1993 and 2018.Nicholas Hoult has been cast in season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in The Chamber of Secrets that was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.

Marvel Studios has found its Scott Summers. Deadline reports that Kit Connor is the pick for Cyclops in the upcoming X-Men reboot, with the decision landing last week between Marvel president Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier.Frank breaks down why this casting works and what it signals for the next era of the MCU. Connor is in the middle of a serious run right now, coming off Netflix's Heartstopper, Alex Garland's A24 war film Warfare, and the upcoming Elden Ring adaptation. Schreier, meanwhile, is coming straight off Thunderbolts, which earns him a lot of goodwill heading into a franchise this size. The bigger story is the shape of the roster. With Samara Weaving attached to Emma Frost and Sadie Sink revealed as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the picture forming here is a noticeably younger X-Men team than longtime fans are used to seeing on screen. Frank makes the case that this is a deliberate reset, not a compromise, and that casting the field captain this young means Marvel is building a team meant to grow over many years.Quick headline drop, strong opinion, and a full discussion coming on the next Geek Freaks Podcast.0:00 Marvel Casts Its New Cyclops0:04 Why Kit Connor Is Everywhere Right Now0:16 Does He Look the Part as Scott Summers0:19 Feige and Jake Schreier Made the Call0:23 The Thunderbolts Factor0:31 A Younger X-Men Roster Comes Into Focus0:40 Your Turn on the CastingKit Connor is Marvel Studios' choice to play Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, per a Deadline exclusive. The call was made last week by Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier after a casting process that ran through the summer.Schreier directed Thunderbolts, and that track record is a big reason confidence is high on this project.Connor's recent run includes Heartstopper on Netflix, A24's Warfare, and the Elden Ring film adaptation.Connor slots in alongside another Netflix breakout, with Sadie Sink already revealed as Jean Grey.Samara Weaving is attached to Emma Frost, so three mutants are now spoken for.The through line across all of it is age. This is a younger team than any live-action X-Men lineup we have seen, and it points toward a long runway for the franchise.Scott Summers first appeared in 1963's The X-Men #1 from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and has anchored the team as field leader ever since."We have our Cyclops.""Kit Connor's on fire right now.""Frankly, Kit looks like a perfect Scott Summers in my opinion.""Damn, Thunderbolts was good.""A much younger cast than maybe we're familiar with, and I think a sign for the future of the MCU.""No complaints on my side."What do you think about Kit Connor joining the team? Is this the Cyclops you pictured, or were you holding out for someone else? Why does Cyclops keep taking the heat for everything in Marvel's mutant world? In this episode, we dive into the long, complicated history of the X-Men's most polarizing leader—how writers have built him up, torn him down, and repeatedly painted him as the face of mutant controversy. From the classic eras of Jean Grey and Wolverine, to events like Schism and Avengers vs. X‑Men, we explore why Marvel keeps framing Scott Summers as the problem child of the mutant community—even when he's right. Is he a fallen hero, a misunderstood revolutionary, or simply the franchise's favorite scapegoat? Let's talk about why Marvel Comics loves…to hate Cyclops.Thank you so much for watching and be sure to share the stream! In an episode where they've never needed his bullshit X-Men knowledge more, Zammit's out sick. But never fear true believer as he's been replaced by our good friend Darcy Smith from Studio Folly! Who knows NOTHING about X-Men. He didn't even know Wolverine aka Logan aka James Howlett bones were coated in adamantium. You all better come for him in the comments. They didn't even mention the time after Wolverine got the adamantium ripped from his bones where he turned into a full on cave man, wore a bandana and had no nose. Nor do the mention the time of how he got his adamantium back. You see, at the time, and unbeknownst to the rest of the X-Men, Apocalypse had kidnapped (man-napped? mutant-napped?) Wolverine and pitted him up against Sabretooth (who had been enhanced with adamantium from the arms of the evil mutant Cyber (he had arms coated in adamantium)) to see who would become Death (one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse). Wolverine defeated Sabretooth believing that only bad would come out of Sabretooth becoming Death and so Apocalypse sucked off the adamantium from Sabretooth to give to Wolverine. Even his teeth were adamantium at this point, but that didn't last. He was then made to attack the X-Men and he was all wrapped up in a red headscarf thing and wielded a big scimitar for reasons that are unclear. Probably to hide the fact that no one was supposed to know he was Wolverine as there was another Wolverine on the team, but not like his clone or his son or his clone of a clone, this one was a Skrull (one of those shapeshifting aliens) who was pretending to be Wolverine for some reason that escapes me. Did Apocalypse put him on the team or was that just a sweet coincidence? This was during Apocalypse: The Twelve storyline, which was something that was teased for so long in the comics but ended up being just a terrible mess where Apocalypse wanted to get sucked off into the body of Nate Grey (an alternate reality and all powerful son of Jean Grey and Scott Summers who was kicking it sweet in the 616 universe who later went on to become a mutant shaman, then become a bit of everyone, then he made an alternate reality where sex was forbidden which makes sense as he was tricked by an evil Madelyne Pryor from a different alternate dimension to have sex, which is weird as Madelyne is a clone of Jean Grey, his mum) but Scott Summers pushed him out the way and took his spot, so Apocalypse ended up sucking off Cyclops and then they merged into one guy and then choofed off for a bit to finally come back to cheat on his wife. So you guys better come for them in the comments. Didn't even know their plane was called the Blackbird.
