Patriarchy and Its Discontents: Psychoanalytic Perspectives (Routledge, 2022) joins luminaries in contemporary psychoanalysis with pioneers of feminism to provide a timely analysis of the crushing effects of patriarchy and the role that psychoanalysis can play in moving us into a future defined by mutuality and respect. Departing from the contemporary psychoanalytic view that the socio-political and intrapsychic are inextricably linked, contributors use psychoanalysis as a tool to demystify and even dismantle patriarchy, while also examining how our theories, practices, and institutions have been implicated in it. The issues under examination here include important and often under-theorized topics such as institutional responses to boundary violations, the search for a black-feminist psychoanalytic theory, patriarchal enactments within the trans community, the persistence of patriarchy within contemporary psychoanalysis, and the impacts of patriarchy on diverse patient populations and ways to address this clinically. This book represents the first anthology comprised of voices from both within and outside the psychoanalytic realm, outlining a contemporary feminist psychoanalysis for both an analytic and non-analytic audience. It is invaluable for both psychoanalysts and for those in gender studies wishing to draw on psychoanalytic thinking. About the editors: Jean Petrucelli is a training and supervising analyst, director and co-founder of the Eating Disorders, Compulsions and Addictions Service (EDCAS), a one-year certificate program, and founder and chair of the Conference Advisory Board (CAB) at the William Alanson White Institute. Steve Anderson is a Life Coach for fathers, a stepfather, husband, the former executive director of the Boys to Men Mentoring Network of Minnesota from 2011 to 2022, and he has led men and boys through transformative weekends in multiple states across the U.S. and internationally. He is a Certified Professional Coach and completed the Certificate Program in Applied Neuroscience from The Neuroscience School. For this first conversation with Steve, the Dads discuss the benefits, power, and privilege of carrying the title “Father.” To be able to embrace fatherhood regardless of our biology is an honor, and something not to be taken lightly. If you are a step or “bonus” parent, be sure to listen to this episode. We also discuss the importance of self care. As fathers, we can find ourselves wanting to serve and provide for our families without taking into consideration our own well-being. But as we know, extending ourselves too far can take its toll at home as well as at work. In this first part of our talk with Steve on self care, we begin to affirm fathers and what we can do to strengthen ourselves to best show up at home. You can reach out to Steve at his website, https://steveanderson.coach/. Steve's program, The Best Dad Program, will move you from feeling hopeless to empowered to become the father you are meant to be, and build and maintain healthy relationships with your children. About Steve My dad wasn't around much when I was a teenager, but I thought that was normal. He'd come home angry from work, go to his home office, and that was it. I started to get angry. I wanted a dad who was there for me, but I wasn't the one who could make that happen. When I was 15, he had a nervous breakdown from stress at work, but it made little difference to me if he was at work, in his office, or detained for his own safety in a mental institution. Absent was absent. I realized I was on this path to manhood on my own. When I was in my 30s, I was in a toxic relationship, and I realized that something needed to change, but I just didn't have the strength or know-how to do so. I started on what was to be a long journey of self-discovery, with the help of many courses, support groups, counseling, and qualifications. Eventually, I had the strength to leave that toxic relationship. My life changed from that moment on. I met and married a wonderful woman who already had two boys, aged 4 and 9. I adopted them after their biological father drank himself to death a few years later. This was hard for them, but I was able to be there and support them. Being a son or daughter is hard, no matter what kind of parents one has. We are all shaped by our past and current circumstances. We are not trapped by them. I've spent the last 15 years developing the skills, knowledge, and experience to help men become better fathers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theadhdads/support

In this week's episode, host Karli Burridge speaks with fellow obesity specialist PA, Ledyi Ballesteros, about how Ledyi's own struggles with her weight led her to the field of obesity medicine, and how she has developed the obesity program at Gonzaba Medical Group, a multispecialty clinic in San Antonio TX, which serves a primarily low-income, elderly, Hispanic population. Ledyi explains how she developed the obesity program, and how she is able to help her patients using culturally sensitive, economic, patient and family-centered approaches. Ledyenska “Ledyi” Baez Ballesteros, MPAS, PA-C Ledyi—a bilingual provider treating patients who speak Spanish and English—began working in internal medicine and urgent care at Gonzaba Medical Group (GMG) in San Antonio, Texas in 2011. She founded the obesity medicine program at GMG in 2015 after gaining around 100 pounds after complications with her first pregnancy in 2014. Ledyi, who now has two kids, subsequently embarked on her own weight loss journey the following year, and her patients began to ask her about it. The resulting pilot program started with an estimated 60 patients. Today, she runs the obesity medicine program at GMG with nearly 700 patients, 75% of whom are Hispanic. Ledyi completed AAPA's Obesity Management in Primary Care Training & Certificate Program in 2018 and earned the Certificate of Advanced Education in Obesity Management for NPs and PAs from the Obesity Medicine Association in 2020. For the past 2 years, she has served as the the Secretary of PAs in Obesity Medicine, and she has been instrumental in helping PAOM become an official caucus of the AAPA. Ledyi has presented on the topic of obesity to members of AAPA, the Association of PAs and NPs, Bexar County Society of PAs, the Society of Army PAs, and the Texas Association of PAs. Bintou participated in the August 2023 edition of our DEI Foundations Certificate. She currently serves as a Patient Experience and Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (HEDI) Analyst with Nuvance Health in Connecticut. This is Bintou's inaugural appearance on our show and we're excited to have her join the program. With Nuvance, Bintou's daily responsibilities revolve around analyzing patient experience data, which involves collecting feedback through surveys from patients visiting their offices. She also focuses on workforce analytics, with a strong emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and equity. We're thrilled that Bintou enjoyed a transformative experience with the August edition of our DEI Foundation's Certificate Program.  As we learn on today's interview, despite thinking she already had a comprehensive understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), the program expanded her perspective. This experience is something we find to be quite common with folks who attended this program.  Bintou discovered that diversity encompasses far more than just surface-level characteristics like race, ethnicity, and gender. It delves deep into personal experiences, traumas, beliefs, and values. This realization was not only humbling but also enlightening for Bintou as described in detail within today's interview.  The DEI Foundations Certificate program also introduced her to the concept of cultural humility, emphasizing the commitment to lifelong learning about various cultures while being aware of one's own biases.  Bintou found these insights enriching, especially as it encouraged candid conversations with participants from diverse backgrounds, broadening horizons, and teaching folks to better appreciate experiences they had not personally encountered. As the discussion wraps up, Bintou strongly recommends folks who are on the fence about making time to join the program to strongly consider attending it. She emphasizes that it's not merely a checkbox but an opportunity to become more informed, empathetic, and culturally humble.  It equips individuals with the tools and skills necessary to foster inclusivity and navigate difficult conversations in the workplace. If you're committed to creating an inclusive environment and enhancing your leadership skills, we urge you to as well to make time for this program. For more information on how to register for the upcoming program, happening soon on October 5th and 6th, please visit this webpage: https://healthcareexperience.org/webinars/dei-certification-2/

In this episode of Vital Psychedelic Conversations, Kyle interviews Carla Kieffer: psychedelic educator, Certified Psychedelic Facilitator, Community Liaison at Maya Health, and Founder of Kairos Integration, a company offering psychedelic training, preparation, facilitation, integration, and microdosing support. This episode was recorded in-person, in between the first and second psilocybin retreats at Atman Retreat in Jamaica, where Kyle, Johanna, and a large group of Vital students just worked with Carla last month. Many participants that attend retreats are new to psychedelics, and often don't know each other, so it was powerful to have a group of classmates follow the breathwork model of having sitters and journeyers take turns (which is the same model she uses for her Psychedelic Guide Training and Certificate Program), and demonstrates how much one can learn when taking the role of the sitter and how the journey becomes the teacher. They talk about how big the therapy part of psychedelic-assisted therapy is, in how rare it is to have someone attending to your every need for hours on end, and wonder: How can we take that aspect of holding space for each other and apply it to everyday life?  She discusses the importance of data collection and how her Internal Family Systems training has helped her balance her love for the mystical with her more science and data-based mind; the importance in facilitators meeting some sort of baseline harm reduction and safety training (and the need to establish an agreed-upon set of standards); the need for increased accessibility; how important it is to further educate about and normalize conversations about psychedelics; and how integration isn't just a box you check off as part of the experience, but a continuous process and part of our lives, where checking in on ourselves should be a regular practice. www.psychedelicstoday.com
