Many years ago, I interviewed the legendary cold and breathwork guru Wim Hof (you can find those two episodes here and here). Now, I'm thrilled to announce an opportunity to join me for an unforgettable Wim Hof Method adventure this December 11th–15th in the stunning mountains of Germany. Imagine diving deep into breathwork, cold exposure, mindset training, emotional healing, sweat lodge ceremonies, and much more while surrounded by nature's beauty. Joining me at the immersive Wim Hof retreat isn't just a four-day getaway in the majestic Bavarian Alps — it's a transformative experience you'll cherish for the rest of your life. For more details, you can click here an watch a video about the retreat here (and keep reading to get a taste of what's to come in today's podcast with Michael Nuss and Maximilian Freiler, the hosts of Wim Hof Method Retreats in Germany, Austria, and Poland). Michael Nuss is the author of the soon-to-be-released book, Alive: The Real Power of Ice Bathing. He discovered the life-changing power of the Wim Hof Method when grappling with depression and addiction. Using the power of ice, breathwork, and a newly formed mindset, he broke free from his old patterns, trained with Wim Hof, and is now one of the most active Wim Hof instructors in Europe, hosting around 20 retreats each year. After experiencing a life-altering transformation through the Wim Hof Method, Maximilian Freiler also became one of the leading Wim Hof instructors in Europe. Shifting from a career in investment banking to a path of personal and spiritual development, his journey included training with the Austrian special forces, studying finance and behavioral psychology, and learning in person with people like Laird Hamilton, Ido Portal, and Wim Hof. In this episode, Michael, Maximilian, and I will explore the scientific links between breathwork, CO2 tolerance, and enhanced cardiovascular function. You'll also get to delve into the remarkable benefits of cold therapy and hear personal narratives ranging from rigorous physical activities to ancient Native American rituals like the Sundance sweat lodge, revealing the profound impact of these practices on consciousness and connection. Michael and Maximilian will also discuss what you can expect at our upcoming retreat which blends ancient traditions with modern techniques to create a transformative experience. Anna Bezuglova transforms the mundane into sacred practice, challenging our perceptions of daily life and movement with insights from her unique journey and teaching philosophy. "The dialogue of sacredness of deep meaning is something that is often connected to daily things. It's not only the physical practice that I treat in such a way but also just daily moments and living life. Being present to it all the time— and it doesn't matter whether I'm doing an official session of practice, or I'm driving a car, or I'm talking to my husband, or I'm teaching a class, or I'm just walking down the road. I think this mindset shifts something in the way you do things day to day." ~ Anna Bezuglova, 3:00 In a deeply reflective conversation, Anna describes how she treats daily practices as sacred, a wisdom imparted by her Zen teacher. She shares her journey of recognizing the sacredness in her routines, initially performing practices that outwardly seemed sacred to others but later realizing their intrinsic value to herself. Anna emphasizes the importance of being present in every moment, whether it's in a structured practice session or the simple acts of daily living, highlighting how this mindset transforms the mundane into something deeply meaningful. Anna's reflections extend into the lessons learned from her father, a martial arts teacher and a Buddhist, who, despite never directly teaching her martial arts, deeply influenced her perspective on life and practice. She recounts growing up in the challenging times of the 1990s in Russia, drawing resilience and a unique outlook from her parents' examples. This background informs her teaching philosophy, where she advocates for a holistic approach to movement that intertwines physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects. Anna argues for the significance of continuous change, consistency, and awareness in practice, underlining how these elements contribute to a fulfilling and transformative journey. Through her narrative, she challenges listeners to see movement not just as physical exercise, but as a comprehensive method to engage with life, fostering change, and personal growth. Takeaways The sacredness of daily practice — a reflection on how integrating conscious intention into routine activities transforms them into meaningful practices. The influence of upbringing — discussing how parental examples, especially in the face of adversity, shape resilience and perspectives on life and practice. The concept of change in practice — emphasizing that constant evolution and adaptation in one's practice mirrors the dynamic nature of life itself. The importance of awareness — highlighting how paying attention to the body's movement and presence in space can significantly improve one's practice and overall well-being. The role of a teacher — the necessity of embodying the principles one teaches, as coherence between words and actions fosters trust and facilitates learning. The power of coordination — explaining how developing coordination through movement practices can enhance the ability to adapt and succeed in various aspects of life. The commitment to long-term learning — advocating for the importance of dedication and persistence in practice to experience genuine transformation. Resources Having a Practice — Anna's blog post mentioned by Craig. The Bamboo Body — Anna Bezuglova's movement school in Barcelona based on Ido Portal teachings. @anna.bamboo — on Instagram The Bamboo Body — on YouTube Feldenkrais Method — A movement pedagogy designed to improve body awareness and enhance movement efficiency through gentle exercises and mindful practice. The method was developed by Moshé Feldenkrais and is used worldwide to assist in rehabilitation and promote physical and mental well-being. Ido Portal Method — A holistic approach to movement culture pioneered by Ido Portal, focusing on developing strength, mobility, and the physical and mental aspects of movement practice. It encourages exploration of various disciplines, from martial arts to dance. (Written with help from Chat-GPT.) --- Hello, I'm Craig Constantine.

Today's podcast features trainer, lifter of heavy and varied objects, and philosopher of movement, DJ Murakami. DJ has over 15 years of experience in the coaching realm with a wide history of movement practice, including training in bodybuilding, Olympic weightlifting, strongman (rock lifting), movement culture (such as Ido Portal), rock climbing, and more. DJ has created training courses such as Chi Torque, the Predator Protocol, and others, and mentors coaches and fitness enthusiasts through his Human Strong training organization. As life, in general, becomes more disconnected from our actual reality (think of relationships via social media, decreasing amount of exposure to nature/outdoors and local community), we can also consider how this has impacted the process of physical training. Where we used to move purposefully as part of the daily routine, our “innate” physicality has now been replaced by treadmills, indoor training spaces, lines/lectures/laps, and the reduction of training to either the simplest of drills or fancy movements that try to replicate sport, without actually being sport. The more we can regularly connect physical movement to the meaning and motivation behind it, not only will we have a better present-moment experience actually moving, but we can also find ourselves becoming stronger and better conditioned in the end result. On today's podcast, DJ speaks importance (and oftentimes, lack of) of consequence and danger in many of our modern tasks and exercise activities, as well as the difference between play and formal training. He also goes in-depth on how we regulate our training from a mental, emotional, and social standpoint, and how this goes into fatigue, our music selection, “mental toughness”, and DJ's own training methods. Adriena is a physiotherapist, a movement teacher, and a passionate student of life born and raised in the Czech Republic. As a former professional athlete representing her country in Ice Hockey for five years, her life always spans around some form of physical practice and discipline that continues to be the guiding force on her path of self-discovery. After going through burnout as an athlete, Ido Portal deeply influenced her path, following his teachings from 2013 to 2021. Until very recently, Adriena was a teacher at Pohyb je život, a movement community based mainly on Ido's philosophy, for the last six years. Since receiving her bachelor's degree at the University of West Bohemia, her work and interest continue to guide her deeper into understanding and connecting the dots between multiple fields and areas such as manual therapy, trauma release, psychotherapy, and general movement practice. Currently living on the move she spends most of the year traveling the world, expanding her experience as a student, teacher, and therapist implementing her knowledge into clinical treatments as well as into her teachings. Meanwhile, she continues to lead her community by combining distance learning through online platforms with in-person gatherings according to her travels. Recently Adriena joined Marcello Palozzo's team in shared pursuit of supporting people to improve the quality of their lives through deep transformative work while continuously nurturing her process of individuation.

30 min What started as a Resource podcast on Ido Portal, an Israeli therapist viewing life as flow and movement, turns into a Discussion podcast on non-movement, grounding and touch as contrasted to flow and movement. Maureen and Pierre discuss grounding to touch and contrast that movement therapies. Begin your morning with Pierre's sigh - an appreciation of morning in Sonoma - and Maureen's comments on gratitude. "I get to do what I do." Later dive into Ido Portal's classic - worth the price of admission - response to Andrew Huberman's interview questions: “I am going to try very hard this morning to not answer any of your questions.” Oh my goodness gracious! Have you ever heard such a terrific answer to a professional interviewer asking questions?! Ido Portal is about play and movement, which he feels expresses meaning beyond words. He feels play is spontaneous and messy. In some ways, this podcast is spontaneous and messy. Enjoy it. Dive in! @stanslavkaza, founder of @movementfreaks is on the Passive Hang! Stanislav is a movement teacher based in Herzeliya, Israel. Stanislav shares his story from wrestling during adolescence, to being exposed to hand balancing from Odelia Goldschmidt, and surprisingly - reluctantly adopting a broader practice, starting first with locomotion and then other subjects via the Ido Portal method. Stanislav has been in this game for over 10 years, and if you dig through his Instagram - you can find clips of his journey from 2012 to 2023 - inspiring for how much the practice can transform you. Stas has been running Movement Freaks for 8 years, and he has been very specific in how he has built his community. Movement Freaks is actually his second group, after he made the decision to relaunch a group class after his first one didn't initially fit the vision he was after. You can see this on their page, that there is something different happening - people are engaged very deeply into the practice, but with a big smile on their face. There is a sense of authentic connectedness, not just in the class, but outside of the class - which was purpose designed by Stas. Stas shares some approaches to improvisation within practice - particularly on the topic of ground floor work, which he is a fantastic practitioner. Surprisingly, Stas doesn't actually follow a prescribed written program for any of his work - he has a unique intuitive approach of listening to what he needs. It's worked for him in many areas - as you can see from his level of strength work, handblancing, floor work, environmental practices. Thanks Stas for connecting with us on the Passive Hang! Stas teaches in person in Herzeliya, otherwise also offers online coaching. #movementpractice #thepassivehang #movementculture

Today's episode features strength and performance coach DJ Murakami. DJ has over 15 years of experience in the coaching realm, and has a wide history of movement practice which includes work in bodybuilding, Olympic lifting, rock lifting, movement culture (such as Ido Portal), rock climbing and more. DJ has created training courses such as Chi Torque, the Predator Protocol, and others, and mentors coaches and fitness enthusiasts through his Human Strong training organization. In today's strength and fitness world, it's almost easier to tell individuals the things they shouldn't do than what they should. Given all of the existing systems in strength and performance training, we can create excessive and robotic training programs that take us far from the core of our humanity, and therefore our potential to enjoy, connect with, and adapt to the work we are doing. DJ Murakami is a coach who has studied a massive number of systems and methods, as well as having trained, himself, in a large variety of movement and strength expressions. Through it all, DJ has acquired knowledge on how to make training as effective as possible for each individual without over complicating and over-coaching the process. On the podcast today, he shares his athletic and coaching background, and then goes into how his coaching has evolved into what it is today: a system that prioritizes the “quest” of those he is working with, within each session. He also shares his knowledge of the internal and external muscle torque system (created by Julien Pineau) which can not only simplify the way we look at exercise selection, and the purpose of various movements, but also gives us an effective way to help athletes and individuals embody and understand muscle tensioning in the scope of their athleticism. DJ is a wise coach who walks his talk on a high level in addition to his powerful training insights. Today's episode features Rett Larson. Rett is a physical preparation coach with an extensive and diverse background. He has worked internationally with the national volleyball teams of Germany, Netherlands and China. Rett has also worked with professionals, down to athletes of all ages, having prior experience as Velocity Sports Performance's director of coaching in California. Rett is a student of movement, having studied not only the top minds in sports performance, but also in general movement training such as taught by Ido Portal and in the scope of physical education. The evolution of sport is one of integration, and not separation. Currently, the “silos” of sport coaching and then all of the “supportive” services (such as S&C) don't tend to have much interaction with each other beyond a conversation. The fact of the matter is, that when an athlete hits the field (or court) of play, they are operating within all facets of their humanity. Their physical, tactical, technical, emotional, social and deep psychology all impacts their performance on the field. The ”sport-warmup” may be the one place, in all of an athlete's training, where the maximal amount of silos can be integrated. Athletes can use strength, physio, games and sport-constraint oriented methods to not only prepare them for practice in an enjoyable way, but also form a “melting pot” of all aspects that make an athlete. On the show today, Rett Larson takes us through his evolution as a coach, and how his warmups and training has evolved over time. He covers the highest transferring abilities he sees from the gym and warmup sessions, that are embodied by the best players on the team. Rett also covers the important interaction that must take place between the physical preparation coach and sport coach, to create buy-in, and move the warmup process forward. After listening to Rett speak on his approach to training athletes, it's hard to think differently about our own process towards the evolution of our athletes and training programs. From a young age, I was very interested in all kinds of sports. From soccer to, over different kind of martial arts I found my way to skateboarding and through my teenager's wish of becoming strong and buff, into the world of strength training. One thing I really never did, was to commit to anything for very long through, I jumped from practice to practice until I found physical development by way of strength work. So some years went by and along the way I decided to become a trainer, as this was the thing I was very passionate about. With this realization, I started to look at things differently. Even more than before, I was interested in understanding in the why behind what I was learning and doing. Eventually 18. Birthday came around, and I actually became a licensed pt and started to work in a gym, while I finished school. Pretty soon after, I got a little bored with what I was doing in the gym and decided that I want to do more with my body. For a couple of years my focus was solely on getting stronger back then. So I opened my eyes and stumbled upon a fellow coach in the gym who was teaching a parkour class. I joined. A couple of weeks later, a friend of mine showed me a video of this weirdo from Berlin... his name was Ido Portal and very soon I found myself at an international workshop in Zurich. This was 2014 or 15, and I dove in deeply and met all those beautiful souls, teachers, friends along the way, who really shaped the person I am today. Some years into the future, I opened my own movement school in Hamburg.

Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways The opportunity for movement comes from deep within our bodies, we're always in an anticipatory state of movementDon't overthink and overly constrain movement – approach movement practice with play and explorationMuch value of movement practice is interaction with someone else: don't forget to incorporate touch & remove certain reactivity by exploring closer proximityGathering around movement is culturally traditional, strengthens bonds, and builds community (today's modern equivalent is a gym buddy or yoga friend) – try communicating with a loved one through movement instead of eating and drinkingDynamic nature of movement & evolution: we go from unskilled to skilled to mastery to virtuosity (true freedom, inviting variability and chance back in to try new things)Visualization may not be helpful unless you've developed tangible experience reinforced by feedbackBins of perspective are helpful in analyzing movement practice – are you moving towards or away from the following: (1) contraction/relaxation; (2) martial; (3) environment; (4) somatic/internal practice; (5) object manipulatoryBins of perspective are helpful in analyzing movement practice – are you moving towards or away from the following: (1) contraction/relaxation; (2) martial; (3) environment; (4) somatic/internal practice; (5) object manipulatoryConsider infusing more movement in your current exercises – for example, step and bicep curl instead of standing stillRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgMy guest is Ido Portal, the world's foremost expert on human movement. I am a dancer, dance teacher and choreographer, originally from Israel and based in Berlin. After studying dance and working as a dancer in Israel, I moved to Europe, where I expanded my knowledge and started to develop my research, practice and methods of teaching and creating. Upon moving to Europe, I participated in a one year post-graduate studies at SEAD, Salzburg, where I met Martin Kilvady, who became my close teacher and mentor for the following 10 years. While learning closely and collaborating frequently with Martin, I have also worked with different choreographers and performed around Europe. For 6 years I've been a part of the Ido Portal team and taught in his events around the world. Working with Ido has opened a bridge for me to the Movement world which allowed me to share my knowledge and experience from the dance field with a wide range of movement practitioners. In the last few years I have been teaching contemporary dance and improvisation in different frames for professional dancers, BA and MA education programs, in professional dance companies and in open workshops around the world, while developing my own choreographic work and working as a freelance dancer and teacher.

Most people know Chase Tucker as the soft-spoken beast who does treadmill and strength training on Peloton. He's so much more than that! Born from parents who struggled to make a life here, Chase recognizes a responsibility from his legacy. His mom was moved here from Haiti when she was four years old. And though she didn't speak English and was ridiculed while growing up, she became a pediatrician and her focus is on giving care to the underserved. Chase's father, having grown up in a pretty tough part of Chicago, struggled his way out and into med-school, also becoming a physician. He lovingly calls them “warriors who combined forces.” One of the traits he took on was to be fueled by being pushed back on. While he loved Chicago (who doesn't, really), he moved to Florida when he was 11 and then to Tennessee a few years later. He was good in sports, and notes having played soccer since he was just 4 y/o. Not only is Chase a good human, he and I found common ground in our discussion in several areas. First, he's a fan of curiosity and has a passion for learning. The level of achievement you have is in direct proportion to your curiosity. He shared that books allowed him to escape while bringing the world to him. And this allowed him to leverage being able to tap into both curiosity and imagination, noting that as a gamer, play has always been important to him. And, he notes, movement is play. In terms of curiosity, Chase reminds us to think beyond First Principles, moving from blockage to bridge. He encourages us, ala Tom Bilyeu, to take on the identity of a learner. Doing so allows you to be anti-fragile. We found that we both are continuous learners and he points out to those consuming information that there's a difference between input and learning. Besides being influenced by Tom Bilyeu, Chase appreciates Gary V and Ido Portal, a movement practitioner whom Chase trained with in London. As an enduring learner, Chase challenged himself (and us) to ask, “Am I being the student who is worthwhile pouring into?” I have to say, that question shook me a bit and had me questioning how devoted I really was to the programs I've taken. When Chase was in college, he realized that he didn't belong on the med-school path. He earned his degree in biology, exercise science, and kinesiology. When he was working with the physically broken, he found that people's fears and doubts amplified. We can handle everything in our lives until something makes us focus on just one thing - an injury, for example. And that led him to find purpose, helping people overcome barriers. Introspection, even in his early 20s led him to question what he wanted to be known for. He began working in the physical fitness fields, running a bootcamp, his own business, and more. Chase joined Peloton four years ago - they found him - and because of the alignment, he jumped in. He sees a dare as a challenge to take on and encourages others to do the same. Set a new standard for yourself and recognize that every experience has a different core (from which to build). Chase Tucker's current mission is to learn to become the person that improves 1 Billion lives. I stopped him there, since my mission is to teach, touch, and positively transform a billion lives. I'd never heard anyone else speak that way! He'd like to create a VC fund and pour energy into people, businesses, and organizations who have typically lacked traditional access to personal and professional development. He sees this as the underestimated community. Chase speaks affirmations at the end of each Peloton training. I read these back to him and he smiled his big smile, saying that he got an energy spike hearing them. “Is that what they sound like??!!” Affirmations: I am becoming my best, strongest, and highest self with each day I choose to take consistent actions toward my goals and purpose. I am in competition with no one except the person I was yesterday, and I am exactly where I am supposed to be on the path I have specifically chosen and created. I am the master of my mind. I am the master of my body. I am the master of my life. Chase can be reached @ChaseTucker on most social platforms. What a joy!
