Join Kosta and his guest: Dr. Chelsea Dowell, Professor of Economics at Tennessee Tech University. In this episode: It was the most Googled question on November 6th, the day after the 2024 United States Presidential Election, and we're here to ask you (a much more qualified resource than Google) what is a tariff?James Carville said it best, “It's the economy stupid.” We're all worried about the economy, but what exactly are we worried about? What's made our groceries, housing and everything we spend our paycheck on, especially here in the Upper Cumberland so much more expensive? We're told daily our economy in the State of Tennessee is one of the best in the United States. According to the published budget on our state website we have a rainy day fund of $2,070,000,000.00. However, Tennessee is ranked in the top 10 states for poverty, and the median income is $33,901.00. How can the economy be thriving, and our state has billions in savings, while the average Tennessean is making roughly $16 an hour?Find out more about the Economics program at Tennessee Technological University:https://www.tntech.edu/majors/economics.phphttps://www.tntech.edu/directory/business/chelsea-dowell.phpBetter Together with Kosta Yepifantsev is a product of Morgan Franklin Media and recorded in Cookeville, TN.This episode of Better Together with Kosta Yepifantsev is made possible by our partners at Miss Sallie's Market.Find out more about Miss Sallie's Market:https://www.misssallies.com
While this episode was recorded before the 2024 United States Presidential Election on November 6th, the question of who will ultimately be in charge remains relevant. Frankly, it feels even more relevant to me (Seth, here) because the election of Donald Trump to a second, nonconsecutive term means the potential removal of many protections for vulnerable people. Jonathan and Seth, however, find hope in God, who will reign forever, who isn't swayed by changing political winds, who never has to worry about having "a mandate," who cares for the vulnerable's plight. We hope this episode is ultimately hopeful. We're glad you're with us! No matter who the president is, we will continue producing podcasts because Christ still reigns. There are more theological questions to be asked. And there is more love needed in the world.
This week, host Dan Hugger is joined by John Pinheiro, Anthony Bradley, and Dylan Pahman to discuss the results of the 2024 U.S. elections. What do the results say about American society, its politics, its parties, and its future? A wide-ranging conversation from pre-election polls to possible party futures. pWotD Episode 2749: 2016 United States presidential election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 225,331 views on Sunday, 10 November 2024 our article of the day is 2016 United States presidential election. The 2016 United States presidential election was the 58th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. The Republican ticket of businessman Donald Trump and Indiana governor Mike Pence defeated the Democratic ticket of former secretary of state and First Lady of the United States Hillary Clinton and Virginia junior senator Tim Kaine, in what was considered one of the biggest political upsets in American history. It was the fifth and most recent presidential election in which the winning candidate lost the popular vote. It was also the sixth and most recent presidential election in U. S. history in which both major party candidates were registered in the same home state; the others have been in 1860, 1904, 1920, 1940, and 1944.Incumbent Democratic president Barack Obama was ineligible to pursue a third term due to the term limits established by the Twenty-second Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. Clinton secured the nomination over U. S. senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary and became the first female presidential nominee of a major American political party. Trump emerged as his party's front-runner amidst a wide field of candidates in the Republican primary, defeating, among other candidates, U. S. senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio and governors John Kasich and Jeb Bush. Trump's right-wing populist, nationalist campaign, which promised to "Make America Great Again" and opposed political correctness, illegal immigration, and many United States free-trade agreements, garnered extensive free media coverage due to Trump's inflammatory comments. Clinton emphasized her extensive political experience, denounced Trump and many of his supporters as a "basket of deplorables", bigots, and extremists, and advocated the expansion of president Barack Obama's policies, racial, LGBT, and women's rights, and inclusive capitalism. The tone of the general election campaign was widely characterized as divisive, negative, and troubling. Trump faced controversy over his views on race and immigration, incidents of violence against protesters at his rallies, and numerous sexual misconduct allegations including the Access Hollywood tape. Clinton's popularity and public image were tarnished by concerns about her ethics and trustworthiness, and a controversy and subsequent FBI investigation regarding her improper use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state, which received more media coverage than any other topic during the campaign. Clinton led in almost every nationwide and swing-state poll, with some predictive models giving Clinton over a 90 percent chance of winning. On Election Day, Trump over-performed his polls, winning several key swing states, while losing the popular vote by 2.87 million votes. Trump received the majority in the Electoral College and won upset victories in the Democratic-leaning Rust Belt states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The pivotal victory in this region, which Trump won by fewer than 80,000 votes in the three states with the combined 46 electoral votes, was considered the catalyst that won him the Electoral College vote. Trump's surprise victories were perceived to have been assisted by Clinton's lack of campaigning in the region, the rightward shift of the white working class, and the influence of Sanders–Trump voters who refused to back her after Bernie Sanders dropped out. Ultimately, Trump received 304 electoral votes and Clinton 227, as two faithless electors defected from Trump and five from Clinton. Trump flipped six states that had voted Democratic in 2012: Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, as well as Maine's 2nd congressional district. Trump was the first president with neither prior public service nor military experience. With ballot access to the entire national electorate, Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson received nearly 4.5 million votes (3.27%), the highest nationwide vote share for a third-party candidate since Ross Perot in 1996, while Green Party nominee Jill Stein received almost 1.45 million votes (1.06%). Independent candidate Evan McMullin received 21.4% of the vote in his home state of Utah, the highest share of the vote for a non-major party candidate in any state since 1992.On January 6, 2017, the United States Intelligence Community concluded that the Russian government had interfered in the 2016 elections, and that it did so in order to "undermine public faith in the U. S. democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency". A Special Counsel investigation of alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign began in May 2017, and ended in March 2019. The investigation concluded that Russian interference in favor of Trump's candidacy occurred "in sweeping and systematic fashion" but it "did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:58 UTC on Monday, 11 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2016 United States presidential election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kimberly.
It was neither a surprise nor an upset: Donald Trump overwhelmingly won the United States Presidential Election. Republicans will also control the United States Senate, while control of the House of Representatives remains undecided. Joining me less than 24 hours after this election is Robbie Gramer, national security correspondent for Politico and host of Politico's excellent NatSec Daily newsletter. Few people are as connected to both the political and foreign policy worlds as Robbie Gramer, so I thought it would be valuable to hear what he is learning from his sources about the foreign policy implications of a second Donald Trump term and the potential Republican control of Congress.
pWotD Episode 2745: 2020 United States presidential election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 3,943,922 views on Wednesday, 6 November 2024 our article of the day is 2020 United States presidential election. The 2020 United States presidential election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The Democratic ticket of former vice president Joe Biden and the junior U. S. senator from California Kamala Harris defeated the incumbent Republican president Donald Trump, and vice president Mike Pence. The election took place against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic and related recession. The election saw the highest voter turnout by percentage since 1900. Biden received more than 81 million votes, the most votes ever cast for a candidate in a U. S. presidential election. In a competitive primary that featured the most candidates for any political party in the modern era of American politics, Biden secured the Democratic presidential nomination. Biden's running mate, Harris, became the first African-American, first Asian-American, and third female vice presidential nominee on a major party ticket. Trump secured re-nomination, getting a total of 2,549 delegates, one of the most in presidential primary history, in the Republican primaries. Jo Jorgensen secured the Libertarian presidential nomination with Spike Cohen as her running mate, and Howie Hawkins secured the Green presidential nomination with Angela Nicole Walker as his running mate. The central issues of the election included the public health and economic impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; civil unrest in reaction to the police murder of George Floyd and others; the Supreme Court following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett; and the future of the Affordable Care Act. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a record number of ballots were cast early and by mail. Thirty-eight states had over half of all votes cast using these methods, and only three states had fewer than 25%.Many more registered Democrats voted by mail than registered Republicans. As a result of a large number of mail-in ballots, some swing states saw delays in vote counting and reporting; this led to major news outlets delaying their projection of Biden and Harris as the president-elect and vice president-elect until the morning of November 7. Major media networks project a state for a candidate once there is high statistical confidence that the outstanding vote would be unlikely to prevent the projected winner from ultimately winning that state.Biden received the majority in the Electoral College with 306 electoral votes, while Trump received 232. Trump was the first president to lose re-election since George H. W. Bush in 1992. Key to Biden's victory were his wins in the Democratic-leaning Rust Belt states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, which Trump narrowly carried in 2016 and whose combined 46 electoral votes were enough to swing the election to either candidate. Biden also became the first Democrat to win a presidential election in Georgia since 1992 and in Arizona since 1996, as well as Nebraska's 2nd congressional district since 2008.Before, during, and after Election Day, Trump and numerous other Republicans engaged in an aggressive and unprecedented attempt to subvert the election and overturn the results, falsely alleging widespread voter fraud and trying to influence the vote-counting process in swing states in what has been described as an attempted self-coup d'état. Attorney General William Barr and officials in each of the 50 states found no evidence of fraud (widespread or otherwise) or irregularities in the election. Federal agencies overseeing election security said it was the most secure in American history. The Trump campaign and its allies, including Republican members of Congress, continued to attempt to overturn the results of the election by filing numerous lawsuits in several states (most of which were withdrawn or dismissed), spreading conspiracy theories alleging fraud, pressuring Republican state election officials (including, notably, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in a phone call that later became widely publicized) and legislators to change results, pressuring the Department of Justice to declare the election "corrupt" and intervene, objecting to the Electoral College certification in Congress, and refusing to cooperate with the presidential transition of Biden. With Trump vowing that he would never concede the election and after exhorting his followers to "fight like hell", a mob of Trump supporters attacked the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, during the joint session of Congress held to certify the Electoral College count. On January 7, Trump acknowledged the incoming administration without mentioning Biden's name. Biden and Harris were inaugurated on January 20, 2021; in a break from tradition, Trump did not attend his successor's inauguration. Trump was indicted on August 1, 2023, on four counts relating to conspiring to overturn the results. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Thursday, 7 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2020 United States presidential election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

pWotD Episode 2742: 2024 United States presidential election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 340,548 views on Sunday, 3 November 2024 our article of the day is 2024 United States presidential election. The 2024 United States presidential election, the 60th quadrennial presidential election, is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Voters in each state and the District of Columbia will choose electors to the Electoral College, who will then elect a president and vice president for a term of four years. The incumbent president, Joe Biden of the Democratic Party, initially ran for re-election, and became the party's presumptive nominee, facing little opposition; however, Biden's performance in the presidential debate held in June 2024 intensified concerns about his age and health, and led to calls within his party for him to leave the race. Although he was initially adamant he would remain in the race, Biden withdrew on July 21, becoming the first eligible incumbent president to withdraw from the race since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, who became the party's nominee on August 5. Harris selected Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, as her running mate.Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, a member of the Republican Party, is running for re-election for a second, non-consecutive term, after losing to Biden in 2020. He was nominated during the 2024 Republican National Convention along with his running mate, Ohio senator JD Vance. The Trump campaign has been noted for making many false and misleading statements, engaging in anti-immigrant fearmongering, and promoting conspiracy theories. Trump has continued to repeat his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him, which prompted the January 6 Capitol attack. Trump's embrace of far-right extremism, as well as increasingly violent, dehumanizing, and authoritarian rhetoric against his political opponents, has been described by historians and scholars as populist, authoritarian, fascist, unlike anything a political candidate has ever said in U. S. history, and a continued breaking of political norms. The Republican Party has made efforts to disrupt the 2024 presidential election as part of a larger election denial movement among U. S. conservatives. In May 2024, Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, becoming the first former U. S. president to be convicted of a crime. In 2023 and 2024, he was found liable in civil proceedings for sexual abuse, defamation, and financial fraud. Trump remains under multiple indictments for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and role in the January 6 attack and his racketeering prosecution to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state of Georgia. Trump survived an assassination attempt in July 2024 during a campaign rally. The presidential election will take place at the same time as elections for the U. S. Senate, House, state governorships, and state legislatures. Key swing states for the presidential election include Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Leading campaign issues are abortion, climate change, democracy, the economy, education, foreign policy, healthcare, immigration, and LGBTQ rights. The economy has consistently been cited by voters in polls as being the most important issue in the election. The winners are scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025, as the 47th president and 50th vice president of the United States, respectively. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:54 UTC on Monday, 4 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2024 United States presidential election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ivy.

rWotD Episode 2714: 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Tuesday, 8 October 2024 is 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin. The 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin was held on November 7, 1848, as part of the 1848 United States presidential election. It was the first presidential election held in Wisconsin since its admission to the Union on May 29, earlier the same year. Democratic candidate Lewis Cass won the state with 38% of the vote, carrying the state's 4 electoral votes. With 26.41% of the popular vote, Wisconsin would prove to be Van Buren's third strongest state after Vermont and Massachusetts. The 1848 election began a trend in Wisconsin where the state would vote the same as neighboring Iowa, as the two states have voted in lockstep with each other on all but 6 occasions - 1892, 1924, 1940, 1976, 2004, and 2020. This was the last time until 1988 that Wisconsin would back a losing Democrat in a presidential election.Participating in its first presidential election, Portage County would ultimately be carried by the statewide winner in every election until 1916. Meanwhile, Winnebago County would not vote for the statewide loser again until 1924.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:15 UTC on Tuesday, 8 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.

A Special Look at The United States Presidential Election of 2024 One major lesson from Vice President Kamala Harris' sudden ascension to be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is that running mates matter. Backup quarterbacks need to be ready for big games, and vice presidents need to be ready for the Oval Office, as this election year has proven on both sides of the political aisle. Former President Donald Trump was nearly killed by a would-be assassin before he officially selected Sen. JD Vance. Harris is set to be Democrats' consensus nominee only because President Joe Biden stepped aside after questions were raised about his ability to do the job for four more years. It's a point not lost on some Republicans who are second-guessing Trump's selection of Vance and Democrats who are anticipating Harris' pick any day. Of 49 US VPs, only 4 accomplished what Harris is attempting “Veepstakes,” as the informal selection process is frequently called, can feel irrelevant and overwrought as pundits pick apart the attributes and drawbacks of potential vice presidents. Trump compared the process to his old reality show, “The Apprentice,” in which he picked the best person to hire. CNN's Edward-Isaac Dovere reports the Harris campaign plans to hold up Trump's pick of Vance as evidence that the former president is not good at hiring people and that Vance is unqualified to be president. Harris' selection of a running mate – the first major decision of her unexpected campaign – is expected before planned joint appearances next week and in time for Democrats to include the potential veep's name when delegates officially select the Democratic ticket during the first week of August. An awkward introduction to voters Trump picked Vance on the first day of the Republican National Convention in July at the urging of one of his sons and to carry his MAGA movement into the future. Old-school Republicans were immediately alarmed because the pick also signaled a new direction for the GOP, at least rhetorically, on issues from organized labor to foreign policy. The public's introduction to Vance, the young senator from Ohio – he turns 40 in early August – who first became famous for writing a by-the-bootstraps memoir of his path to success, has been rocky. Vance's past comments about women could hurt Republicans' chances with a key voting bloc. His past opposition to Trump, before a conversion to a MAGA true believer, makes Vance now seem like an opportunist. Ancestry of Kamala Harris Kamala Harris is of Jamaican descent on her paternal side and of Indian descent on her maternal side. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Gopalan (Kamala's mother) was a Tamil Brahmin, part of a "privileged elite" in Hinduism's ancient caste hierarchy."[42] Donald J. Harris wrote in an account of his family ancestry that the Harris name comes from his paternal grandfather Joseph Alexander Harris, a land owner and agricultural produce exporter, and that his paternal grandmother "Miss Chrishy" (née Christiana Brown) was a descendant of Hamilton Brown, a plantation and slave owner.[43] However, Snopes rated this claim as unproven pending further research. Snopes noted that Harris made errors in some of the vital dates he provided for births and deaths of his grandparent

As the United States Presidential race continues picks up pace, so does its intensity. It's an interesting year for the US, as the court cases and trials create the backdrop for what's looking to be a rehash of the last election, Trump facing off against Biden. Nick Bryant, former correspondent and author, knows that world intimately, joining Mike Hosking to discuss what's sure to come during the campaign. “I scarcely ever passed a week under such depression of spirits. […] It is terrible to see the extent to which all classes go in their determination to win. Conscience offers no restraint; nothing is so common as the resort to perjury unless it is violence. In short, I do not know who to believe: if we win, our methods are subject to impeachment for possible fraud; if the enemy wins, it is the same thing exactly. Doubt, suspicion, irritation go with the consequence, whatever it may be.”—Lew Wallace, retired Civil War general, 1876Many people will call out elections in our lifetimes as being particularly divisive, whether it's the 2000 election or the 2020 election. Those were indeed divisive, but very few elections have approached the divisiveness and the chaos unleashed in the United States Presidential Election of 1876, fought between the Democrat Samuel Tilden and the Republican Rutherford B. Hayes, in which the ultimate decision on who would be president was decided by one electoral vote.In this special five year anniversary episode of History Impossible in which we revisit this event only briefly touched upon in the inaugural episode of this entire show, we're joined by Richard Lim of the This American President podcast, who helps shed some light into the details of this contentious election and this absolutely wild period of American history. With the election of 2024 looming large and with everyone's imaginations running wild with how things will turn out, Richard and I thought it might be prudent to not just provide a historical reality check on just how wild things can get, but how Americans were able to extract themselves from such insanity while living through it.Happy five years and here's to five more with History Impossible. For more detailed look at the Election of 1876, check out Richard's episode on that election here.History Impossible has been made possible by the following generous supporters on Patreon, Substack, and PayPal. In this episode of Current Account, Clay is joined by David Sacks, Fellow, Asia Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations to talk about the recent elections in Taiwan. The topics include an analysis on the election's proceedings and process, how the election impacts the relationships between the United States and China, the United States and Taiwan, and Taiwan and China, and how the 2024 United States Presidential Election may influence the upcoming term.
Sara and Leo discuss the upcoming 2024 United States Presidential Election.
It has come to my attention that a profound shakeup could be in the works for the 2024 United States Presidential Election. The venerable media powerhouse, the New York Times, reported recently that ex-President Donald J. Trump may be contemplating an unexpected choice for his running mate if he decides to run again. This isn't another seasoned politician or a known ally from his previous administration. Possibly, he's considering Tucker Carlson, a standout figure within the media industry, and a man well-known for his candid expression of views. During an illuminating interview on the Dispatch podcast, veteran political correspondent Maggie Haberman discussed what lies ahead in Trump's political future should he decide to jump back into the Presidential ring. Haberman brings a wealth of experience and an array of contacts to her journalism, delivering information that often rings true. Within this context, she shed light on the budding whispers about Carlson's potential involvement in the upcoming election, as a vice-presidential candidate no less. In response to a pointed question from podcast host Jamie Weinstein regarding the circulating rumors, Haberman confirmed that she, too, had heard whispers about the possible Trump-Carlson duo. Carlson, not simply a television personality, was a co-founder of both the Daily Caller and the Daily Caller News Foundation. Given his track record, it seems plausible that he could be an enticing choice for Trump's mate on the hypothetical ticket.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Levantar la alicaída economía, cumplir con las promesas a los inmigrantes y recomponer la fractura en el tejido social, también son parte de los problemas que tendrán que afrontar en el corto plazo.

Welcome to episode #544 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #544 - Host: Mitch Joel. It's not just fake news. The entire media business is in a tailspin now. The last United States Presidential Election called into question what, exactly, is going on with journalism? Facts vs. opinions. Left side vs. right side. Traditional media vs. the digital marketplace. The entire world of journalism is being called into question. Who is responsible for fake news? Who should pay for journalism? How do we navigate, in a world where our most trusted sources were a huge part of how slanted our perceptions of the world are? So many questions. My professional career started off in journalism (this was prior to becoming both a publisher and marketer), so yes, I have a soft spot for all things journalism. There are few who are looking at journalism and the new media with a sharper eye than Jay Rosen. I'm a huge fan. Rosen teaches journalism at New York University, where he has been on the faculty since 1986. He is the author of PressThink, a blog about journalism's ordeals in the age of the web, which he launched in 2003. In 1999, Yale University Press published his book, What Are Journalists For?, which was about the rise of the civic journalism movement. I was hoping that Jay could provide us with some insights on what happened and where we go from here. His answers will shock you. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 55:24.
