A Podcast For Living Your Engaged and Joyful Life That Green Dress is a podcast for women just like you. Women who have found this moment of loss, invisibility, confusion, a lack of motivation or inspiration, or even an increase in self-doubt that’s paralyzed us from the living the life we know we deserve. The truth is, every environment, be it a workplace, home, a relationship, can leave us challenging our beliefs, our worth, and our value - am I doing enough professionally, being enough as a community member, I am attractive enough for my partner, am I making enough healthy meals for my kids…you know, doing ALL the things. You may have your own version of a green dress, maybe your narrative is that you are a mom in the throws of motherhood and you’ve lost your femininity and identity and you want it back. Perhaps you are entering your second or third career in life and want your experience and history to be valued. Entering the workforce with a degree in hand only to realize the job wasn’t what you imagined. Perhaps you’ve lost your joy and you want to find it... I want to invite you back into the person you were designed to be by helping you tune in and turn up the volume on your abilities, talents and gifts. Walking back into the engaged life meant that I had to revisit the woman I was from the very beginning. The engaged life gives you validation, and opens you up to encouragement and support from other women navigating through the same territory as you. When we run alone and empty we reject spaces to get quiet, reflect and imagine because they feel uncomfortable. I want to help you cultivate that space again where you can dream, imagine again. That Green Dress Podcast is going to open you up for functional alone time and rejuvenating relationships at the same time. Join me each week championed, energized, renewed, and ready to come out of isolation into the community with other women and ready to live your most engaged life. As a woman you may feel like you’re tirelessly trying to achieve a sense of belonging and acceptance in your home and work life. In order to do that you’re often “turning down” the things that make you who you really are for the acceptance of other people. This may have led to a muted and tired version of who you were designed to be. I want to invite you back into the person you were designed to be by helping you tune in and turn up the volume on your abilities, talents and gifts. Walking back into the engaged life meant that I had to revisit the woman I was from the very beginning. There is so much wisdom and so many life lessons to be learned from a farm. This week, I share the 10 things I've learned from the farm and my parents, the farmers. As you know, I spent many years focused on the grind. Nose down, blinders up and all. And you know what happened? I missed so many opportunities to experience AWE. I was first introduced to this concept (which sounds strange, I know) by my uncle, John DeGraaf, as I began to explore the possibilities ahead of launching the podcast. I had no idea the dramatic and positive impact that experiencing awe could have on a person...on me. Did you know that experiencing awe can improve mood, increase gratitude and life satisfaction, decrease stress, and improve connection? Wild, right?! This week, I share the research behind awe, the experiences of awe I fully embraced last week on holiday, and ideas for ways to experience awe each day. And guess what, they are free! Join me to increase those moments that stop you in your tracks, find you at a loss for words, leave you with your mouth agape, and give you goosebumps. Say yes to awe with me! I am often asked, “How are you doing?” “What has changed?” “What’s still working?” “What have you learned?” in the past year of podcasting, while in the midst of a global pandemic and during a transition back to work from a year-long sabbatical. Short answer? Good. Lots. Some things. More than I expected. Seriously though. This year has been an incredible opportunity to learn from other women. To check myself. To maintain my boundaries. To prioritize my family. To laugh more. To articulate my needs. To recognize that while I changed, I re-entered a system that very much stayed the same. It has been hard some days. I learned I still have lots of learning to do, grace is very much needed, fresh starts are key, and that I can’t underestimate the power of attending to basic needs. Tune in for a life update. Celebrate with me. You’ve been here for this journey and I think we should cheer for that. Cheers to life!

Motherhood is beautiful and hard. Really beautiful and really hard. And while the whole experience is supposed to be natural…there are many ways in which it isn’t the case. In an effort to increase our compassion and empathy for one another and in honor of Mother’s Day, this week I reflect on my journey in motherhood. A rocky, joyful, lovely, and scary experience. We have to make it ok to be wildly fulfilled by motherhood. We must open our hearts to those mamas who are feeling overwhelmed and even frustrated on the hard days and seasons. We have to normalize and acknowledge those who are wishing and praying for a baby. And we have to give space to those mamas who are missing their angel babies. We must also have space in our heart for this with children who are struggling, feeling sadness, and regret. Join me in lifting up the women around us!

Fear and attracted to true crime stories? Have you felt disgusted by a person’s acts but feel sadness when they are hurt or you come to understand an unfortunate upbringing? Felt terrified and excited about starting a new venture? Felt grateful and ready yet anxious to re-emerge from the pandemic? This week I talk about how these moments and these emotions can happen simultaneously at varying degrees. This seeming conflict can invite or even require us to pause. The positive emotions we experience are generally the ones we wish to hold onto and yet the harder ones, those difficult to shake, can help keep us safe by signalling when risk, aversion, danger may be present. Today’s episode answers an important listener question that seemed appropriate on the heels of our conversations about grief and loss. Here is the question: How do you stop wanting things you’ve always wanted - children, job, relationship, face, body…? A big and even painful question. First, if you’ve wondered this about yourself, you are NOT alone. This is certainly a human experience. It is human to have dreams, expectations, desires, and hopes. It is human to work towards these life plans. And yet, we know things don’t always unfold as we wished and sometimes are far outside of our control. Sometimes, though, the “change in plans” come with positive consequences. And while they may be difficult to see, know, understand in the moment, they may be more present later...when we are ready or in a different life season. In this episode, I share a personal experience when life didn’t go as planned...when my dream didn’t take shape. This experience was discouraging, embarrassing, and contributed to my feeling stuck and hopeless. This week, you will learn strategies for living through these moments and emerging differently, including labeling your experience with movie titles. Tune in to hear the movie title I selected to describe my experience and how it impacted me.

Loss of a relationship? A job? A friend? A significant other? An important event or achievement? Each of these can be experienced as a significant loss. Sometimes, though, we judge or criticize others for the way they experience a major event. We may minimize the impact of the experience or the gravity of the loss. Here’s the deal. We get to choose. We define the event or moment for which we are grieving AND we get grieve in the way that works and makes sense for us. Sometimes the difference in our perceptions and styles create challenges in our relationships and interactions. We grieve one way and others do it a different way. Guess what, both are correct! Cheers to honoring each other’s experiences.

We live in a social world that is filtered and constructed to highlight the “good stuff.” And while I am SUPER into recognizing and lifting the good (as you know), sometimes it keeps us from truly understanding or realizing what another might be experiencing. This can keep us from being known and makes it difficult to establish meaningful connections with others. It also perpetuates an inaccurate narrative of each other. Me, too. The idea of “strolling” around Target and browsing every detail of the new home decor line increases my stress. This is new. I love Target! What happened? Well, the pandemic happened and required us to hunker down, isolate, and adjust to the parameters. As we emerge from the pandemic, it is normal for us to feel a bit reluctant, stressed, and apprehensive. We have to relearn how to do this...how to be in community...how to be with others. I know. Sometimes, though, in an effort to find connection on these platforms, we find ourselves creeping into comparison - who’s having more fun than you, connecting with others more than you, eating better than you, having newer/better/cooler/more things than you, celebrating different moments than you, having more hydrated and plump skin than you, etc. This comparison is truly JOY-SUCKING. From making the appointment, to being squished, and then waiting for your results...it can all be stressful. This week, I chat with Angela Barnes, CEO and Founder of Kvinna Breast Care and Imagining. Angela has painfully experienced the failure of mammography for women with dense breast tissue. One of her best friends is battling a stage 4 diagnosis because mammography alone didn’t give her the early detection she needed due to her dense breast tissue. After discovering how SonoCine (an Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound that powerfully detects small cancers in women with dense breast tissue or with implants) would have made a difference in her friend’s life, and learning that tens of thousands of these stories happen every year in our country alone, Angela has made it her mission to bring this powerful ultrasound technology to the masses. Angela is committed to making sure women are educated and then empowered to make the very best decisions for their health. Tune in to hear how Angela used her experiences to fuel a major shift in her life, both personally and professionally! She is married to her husband Mark and together they have raised three kids. She has dedicated the last 22 years to raising her children and working in several women’s ministries. Her heart and passion for women living healthy and whole lives is the driving force behind all she does. This mission has led her to this next chapter in her life. She is the president and co-founder of KVINNA Breast Care + Imaging clinic. The first clinic is located in Liberty Lake and is opening in early 2021.

To date, I have heard from so many women who have experienced stress and burnout in their lives. For some, these moments have served as an impetus to try something new and for others, the experience left them feeling stuck. Really stuck. In my journey, being able to label my experience allowed me to get clear and honest about my needs and begin to imagine my next steps. This week, I share and define stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, and empathy blocks...all of which can kill our joy. I no longer want you to feel stuck, burned out, or alone. I want you to live differently; more joyfully. Tune in to learn more about how these challenges can manifest, how they can impact your daily life, and what you can do about it!

Once thought to be for those entering retirement or empty nesters, burnout is also present in our young female friends including those finishing college and seeking that fabulous first job, those who entered the workforce early and now experience stuckness and dissatisfaction, those who are criticized for appearing to young or inexperienced, and those working to establish themselves in the adult world all while navigating the ever present social media influence that only seems to complicate the situation through comparison. Bottomline, burnout can happen to any one of us at any time. We can relate. We can learn from each other’s experiences and work to make sure we do it differently. Have you ever wondered why others seem to be smiling more frequently, laughing more deeply, or having more fun than you? If you recall the first episode, I described one of the biggest indicators of my burn out was my loss of joy. I didn’t see how hustling, achieving, and being productive could occur alongside joy. As I sat in deeper reflection this year, it became clear that joy had been something that seemed out of reach for most of my life. I had started to convince myself that joy wasn’t for me. I didn’t understand it, I was envious of those who seemed to be experiencing it, and yet I wondered if true joy was actually real. Listen in as I share what I have discovered about joy, my new definition, and how I’m doing it every single day!
