Vibrant Vulnerability: The Changing Nature of Leadership for Nonprofits The role of CEO, whether in healthcare or as leader of a church, is drastically changing to include being the "chief fundraising officer." The choice is not whether one likes the change, but rather whether or not one chooses to embrace the change. Randall Hallett is the CEO and Founder of Hallett Philanthropy, a full-service philanthropy consulting firm. Having spent his entire career in philanthropy, Randall is passionate about helping organizations seek funding to meet their mission. He believes giving is good for one's emotional and physical well-being. Before founding Hallett Philanthropy, Randall served as President and Principal Consultant for a large consulting firm. He oversaw all client programs on behalf of the 30+ person firm. The final four years of his seven-year tenure were the most profitable for the organization. Randall has worked with systems, hospitals, and medical centers here in the US and across the globe, including Intermountain Health System, Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) System, Dignity Health System, AdventHealth System, Indiana University Health System, University of California Irvine, Baylor University Medical Center, University of Missouri, University of Miami, Marshfield Clinic Health, Manitoba Children's Hospital (Canada), and St. Vincent's Current (Australia) Genesis Health. Before joining Gobel Consulting, Randall was the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and MedCenter Senior Executive at the Nebraska Medical Center, where he was responsible for all aspects of fundraising, including the introduction of a major gift solicitations program through physician engagement, a concierge program, and a planned giving effort which led to a 600 percent increase during his tenure. Randall and his team supported the $370 million 18-month fundraising effort for the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Before working with MedCenter, Randall spent 15 years in various fundraising positions, all in the chief development officer role. Randall holds a Bachelor's Degree in business and finance from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, a Juris Doctorate with a personal focus in taxation issues of estates and trusts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and an Educational Doctorate in leadership from the University of St. Thomas. Eddy Dacius host the Divine Purpose Podcast. DPPodcast is a platform for healthy conversations, interviews, and interactions with callers. We all have different opinions; however, the truth is the ultimate mediator. SPECIAL GUEST Dr. Nicole Price is the CEO of Lively Paradox, a professional training and coaching business based in the heart of the United States. A few years ago, Dr. Nicole would have been the last to tell a leader to practice empathy. Today, her work brings compassion to nationwide boardrooms and creates more substantial, sustainable companies. Today, Dr. Nicole knows that empathy can and should be taught to even the most dyed-in-the-wool cynics corporate boardrooms have to offer. Her company is responsible for success stories across the country, and these organizations have created and retained powerful workforces through empathy and boosted their bottom lines. Dr. Nicole holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a Master's in Education from Park University, and an Educational Doctorate in Leadership from Capella University. “My audience of human resource personnel would laugh and laud me afterward for my great presentation,” she remembers. “Yes, that's right, people working in human resources ate up my take-no-prisoners leadership methods.” This was her philosophy until a fateful meeting at an airport. Dr. Nicole half overheard, half eavesdropped on a conversation this man had with someone from his office. He was trying to hold someone accountable for their responsibilities and commitments. After he hung up, Dr. Nicole said, “Dude, you should fire everybody. None of those people seem like they're committed to the work.” The man laughed and introduced himself. He was Dr. Ian Roberts, the author of Radical Empathy in Leadership. The relationship forged at this moment would change Dr. Nicole's life and the course of countless businesses. Dr. Nicole Price gets it. She understands that if leadership is anything, it is personal, and everyone can be a great leader — everyone can lead their whole life. So she gets emotional. Dr. Price's transparency allows others to learn from her mistakes and helps them avoid the same pitfalls. She gets real. She will tell you, yes, having differences within a team can be more challenging, but that hard work can pay off professionally and personally. And she gets wise. She'll tell you, in a heartbeat, how she's gotten a few things wrong over the years, but a little grace and some solid coaching saved her. Can you make mistakes and still be an excellent leader? Is it possible to lead effectively with so many personalities on one team? Can you genuinely lead people and still have a decent life and energy left to live it? If you ask Dr. Price, the answer is absolute yes. Dr. Price encourages others to live excellently through leadership development, coaching, consulting, keynotes, and other resources. Her energetic and engaging sessions give participants strategies and specific tools they can apply immediately. Her lively presentation style garners rave reviews and, very often, an invitation to return. Dr. Price received her B.S. in chemical engineering from North Carolina A&T University, her master's degree in adult education from Park University, and her doctorate in leadership and management from Capella University. If you are thinking about getting your doctorate degree and wondering what it is really like, this episode is for you. I get to chat with Lauren from @thinkdyslexia about getting our doctorate degrees. She has and doctorate in education (Ed.D.)focused on the practical aspect of serving as a change agent with the field. I have a PhD. in special education and applied behavior analysis and focused on conducting and publishing research related to evidence-based practices within the field.  Despite our different degrees, our experiences were pretty parallel. We both decided to pursue a doctorate degree while we were getting our undergraduate degrees. We both went to three year programs. We both agree that the workload is probably not the most challenging aspect of getting your degree.  We did have very different “whys” when getting our degrees which highlights the endless possibilities for going back to school and pursuing your doctorate. We delve deep into our whys and discussion how our motivation kept us going during the not so fun parts of the program. In this episode we chat about what we found most challenging and most rewarding about getting our degrees. We also talk about the financial aspect of pursing higher education and the different options that may be available to you as your are navigating the finances. We talk about how life can get in the way, but how we stayed the course and finished our programs on time. And we give you our advice for getting a doctorate degree.  If you have ever thought about getting a doctorate degree, we hope you find this episode helpful! Feel free to reach out to either one of us and ask any questions you might have!

It seems the more mindfulness is mainstreamed, the more its claims are being questioned. Ron Purser, Professor of Management at SFSU and author of the new groundbreaking book, McMindfulness: How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality, has been a longtime critic of the widespread mainstreaming and overselling of mindfulness practices. He views mainstream mindfulness as an amplifier of Western consumerist individualism and a banal form of capitalist spirituality; one he claims utterly avoids cultivation of social and political transformation. Ron challenges the widely accepted narrative that stress is self-imposed and mindfulness is the cure-all, and offers ways for mindfulness delivery in healthcare and business settings to cast off its neoliberal shackles, and be redirected toward collective awakening.  Ron and I have known each other for quite some time. He is erudite and engaging. I"m sure you will enjoy this stimulating, thought-provoking conversation. Ron's website   Ron Purser is Professor of Management in the College of Business and the Educational Doctorate in Leadership program in the College of Education at SFSU San Francisco State University. His scholarship currently focuses on mindfulness in organizations, and how Buddhist psychology and Buddhist social theory can inform social change and transformation. In addition, Prof. Purser writings have been exploring the challenges and issues of introducing mindfulness into secular contexts, particularly with regards to its encounter with modernity, Western consumer capitalism, and individualism. Dr. Purser is an ordained Zen Dharma Teacher in the Korean Zen Taego order of Buddhism.
