John Vuong: Amplify Your Brand - How To Get Your Biz Found Online

Whole You, Consciously Creating a Business and Life You Love Podcast

Hey my friends! I’m Hayley Hobson and I’m so glad you’re here!  Welcome to the Whole You Podcast where I share tips to help women like you implement healthy hacks and habits so you can eat smarter… rest better, and get it ALL done.  Today we’re gonna talk about how crazy the internet is… And I don’t think this is really gonna be an unpopular opinion but… the online world is a noisy place these days.  It’s not enough just to be online anymore, you have to actually be FOUND by your clients and customers, right?  But being found? It’s no easy task.  Here, let me drop some stats on ya... just to paint a picture. On any given day…Google does 63,000 searches per second. PER. SECOND. Ok maybe that doesn’t sound so bad… but here’s what it translates to. 3.8 million... searches per MINUTE... That’s 5.6 BILLION... searches per day. Yup, with a B. Which means… at least 2 TRILLION searches per year. And I bet you've never thought about HOW Google serves up the results to you in a fraction of a freaking section, have you? You’re more concerned that it does it FAST, am I right? LOL So here’s another little fun fact… there are over 200 factors that play into what shows up the instant you hit ENTER. That’s some complicated coding going on in the background… And you know what? Getting on Page 1 of those results is important…  ...because 95% of web traffic comes from the first page of the search results...  Which means just 5 freaking percent comes from anything on page 2 or later. AND -- check this out -- the majority of people don’t even bother to get past the FIRST FIVE RESULTS ON PAGE 1.  I know, I know… I just threw a lot of numbers at you and your head is probably spinning… but the point is… if you wanna get found super quickly and easily on the internet? You wanna be highly ranked in Google. So -- if you could somehow hack that algorithm to show up at the top of page 1…  To soak up all that secret sauce? Well, that’d be worth a pretty penny, don’t you think? And here’s the deal. You can. The place to start is 3 little letters: S - E - O.  There are entire companies dedicated entirely to SEO… It’s literally that important. So knowing all this… it can be a little overwhelming. I GET IT. That’s why I’m so excited to be chatting with my guest today, John Vuong, an SEO expert who knows how to refine, clarify and AMPLIFY your brand and get it found online. He’s the Founder and President of Local Seo Search, a boutique agency entirely focused on the SEO game. He’s here to break down SIMPLE ways you can start improving your own SEO… without dropping bucket loads of cash on it. He’ll share some of the secrets big brands know… so you can get all the insider info that they spent years and tons of money into figuring out. Because entrepreneurs? It’s important that we understand SEO… and how it plays into getting super clear on who are are… who we serve… and what we offer. Because I promise you. If you stay super high level… and you think you’re for everyone… SEO is gonna be tough for you. So we’re gonna dig into how entrepreneurs can use SEO techniques so we get found… and make more MONEY. That sounds awesome, right? John’s gonna help us get there… working with business owners like you and me is HIS JAM. So let’s get started! Welcome, John... Hey John, welcome. I’m so excited to be chatting with you today! Could you introduce yourself briefly to our listeners and give some insight into your background, how you got here, and what you do? Okay now let’s dig on into some biz tips. For those who aren’t as familiar, can you tell us briefly what SEO is and then I’d love to know what advice you have for how biz owners can take advantage of it to get their businesses FOUND online? What is the most common mistake you see brands making when it comes to getting their businesses found online? How do small businesses and entrepreneurs can get found on google when they're up against major competitors with a ton of money to put toward SEO? In the Wild Wild West that is the internet, how do we go about differentiating our brand from everything else that’s out there? What does that process look like? Do you have any other closing tips for amplifying our brand, maybe in the areas of sales and relationship-building as I know you consult with companies on that? John, how can people connect more with you? Do you have a website or social account you’d like to share? Well, my friends, I hope you all learned as much from John as I did.  Do you feel a little smarter about your biz now? I know I do. SEO is crazy important, right? I’m super pumped after chatting with John! Let’s get your businesses out of the DARK back pages of the internet, lol!  I’d love to hear from you on Instagram, TikTok, or Clubhouse - share with me some of your biggest takeaways from today. My DMs are open, lol. And as important as SEO is… it’s kinda hard to land yourself on the top 5 results of page 1 after listening to just one podcast episode. I WISH it were that easy… There’s a lot that goes into it… Like John shared, getting crystal clear on your brand foundations is a major part of the SEO puzzle… And it’s just one step in the process of smashing your success goals. So if you’ve struggled a bit in your biz… or your head is now spinning from all the knowledge dropped on ya today… I’ve got the cure. First… take a deep breath. Right now. You got this. Second… you’re gonna want to go step by step. Baby steps even. Bite-sized chunks is the only way you’re gonna actually make it happen. Unless you’ve got a gazillion dollars to drop on a huge team of experts. I’m gonna assume that ISN’T you. (But I wish it were!) So the first baby step is to come up with a plan. You need a roadmap to know where you’re going, right? You’ll find one inside Your Whole Biz… This is a course I recently decided to reopen because I saw so many people struggling with getting found online -- or heck, even GETTING online. Your Whole Biz gives you everything you need to know about stepping up your game by going online… Whether you’re brand new to the idea or if you’ve got a biz with a bit of an online presence. You’ll get value from it. The course is basically all of my learnings from the past, oh I don’t know, decade, of experience condensed in one place for you. I used a specific set of online marketing strategies to take my passion for health and wellness and turn it into a multi-million dollar division of my existing business.  I'll teach you how to do the same thing with your business. You know, the other day I was hanging out in the private Your Whole Biz community group and Danielle popped in to say that she learned more from this course than she did a 6-month mastermind… And you KNOW those are pricey… What’s funny is I was putting this episode together… which is obviously all about search and Google… and she said that Your Whole Biz offers clear instructions and  resources -- so you don’t have to Google anything. It’s all right there in the course. Because as we just learned… Google is a JUNGLE. There’s a whole lotta information out there, so it takes a ton of time to find everything you’re looking for. Especially if you want to learn how to grow your biz online. And like Danielle says… with Your Whole Biz -- you don’t need to Google.  Everything you need to know is right there in the course… and it’s super clear, easy to follow, and with all the resources you need to get started NOW. But here’s the thing: You need to register for this course right now though because we won’t be doing an open registration for a while.  The place to go is https://www.hayleyhobson.com/yourwholebiz. Don’t worry about catching that right now… I’m dropping the link in the Show Notes and this week’s newsletter.  Registration is only open until April 13th so do your future self (and your biz) a favor and get in there. I hope to see you inside! Okay friends, I’ll see you online.

Are you sick of the DIY thing?  I hear this so often with our podcast production clients.  They came to us at Uncommonly More because, honestly, they just couldn’t do it anymore.  Between the recording, editing, making show notes, sharing the word on email or social media, and/or coordinating with guests, they were reaching the end of their ropes.  PLUS, they were falling behind on recording or not putting out shows they were totally proud of, or even wanting to give up because they felt they had no strategy or reason to keep recording.  If this is you, I GET IT.  And there is hope.  In fact, I’m going to make it really easy for you to know when it’s time to get some help with your podcast (and the truth is, you probably already know deep down).  I’m laying it all out in a few questions you need to answer in order to know if it’s time for you to get some podcasting support. In today’s episode I thought it would be cool for you to see the different symptoms one of my clients (we’ll call her Lisa) was experiencing and how those symptoms were able to be managed & reversed with nutrition, lifestyle & supplementation; NOT medication.   I had a client that came to me with extreme anxiety, bouts of depression, PCOS, her hair was falling out, she had interrupted sleep, her period was irregular, she had intense mood swings and some cramping before her periods.   As someone who used to have a ton of (what I thought) were random symptoms, I understand the thought process that they’re all coming from a different place & it’s never going to get better unless I take a pill etc. I GET IT.   But I’m here to tell you that’s NOT the case!   What we did with her, which is what I do with every client, is we focussed on healing her gut, balancing blood sugar, improving liver detoxification, nourishing her nervous system & supporting her mitochondria (energy centers of the cell) with targeted supplementation.   One way we healed her gut was by increasing the amount of  anti-inflammatory foods she ate such as fiber (which is ONLY found in plant foods) & ditching dairy. (For more info on GUT HEALTH check out EPISODE 10). One step in balancing her blood sugar was completely removing sugar & having a high-protein breakfast. We also nourished her nervous system by focussing on quality sleep & incorporating stress management techniques that best suited her and what was going to make the biggest difference for her. We started with super short meditations of 5 mins every morning & eventually increased to 10 mins. We improved her liver detoxification by switching over her products from conventional ones to non-toxic ones. Conventional products are loaded with chemicals that your liver needs to process & metabolize. Your liver also needs to metabolize & process your EXCESS HORMONES BUT it will first process whatever is most LIFE THREATENING. Since the chemicals in products are more life threatening than excess hormones, it focusses on that first & never gets to the excess hormones which then creates imbalances. By removing those toxins by using non-toxic beauty & household cleaning products, the liver has more space to process excess hormones. We supported her mitochondria with nutrients she specifically needed- for example a probiotic & a prenatal since she’s looking to conceive soon.   For access to PROFESSIONAL GRADE supplements & a list of all my faves head to my dashboard on FULLSCRIPT & get 10% off!   And after 10 weeks she had virtually no anxiety, she adopted habits like meal prepping that helped her stay on track, she had a regular period, SLIGHT PMS symptoms only two days before her period instead of 10 days before and the symptoms were super minor.   Her hair started falling out less & thickening, and most importantly she was aware of her body and learned how to really read her cycle and know when she’s ovulating & what she needs in each specific phase.   We did this in a specific order for maximum results & by taking SMALL STEPS each day/week which is exactly how my group course is set up.   It’s one thing to be given the information, but it’s not until you fully LEARN it & go through the motions with someone that makes it into a LIFESTYLE that you’ll be able to MAINTAIN long term.   I tell you this to show you types of symptoms you could have,  that healing is multifaceted and is more than just food, and most importantly to give you hope and proof that nutrition and lifestyle changes are what heals your hormones and you do not need to rely on medication or deprivation in order to do so.   WAYS WE CAN CONNECT! Look, I GET IT. 2020 has been A LOT to navigate. That's why I brought today's guest to the show, Melissa Monte. Melissa is an incredible speaker and host of the Mind Love podcast where she helps people find their passion and purpose (amazing). In our conversation together, we get into the tools that you need to emotionally handle the chaos of this year. We jam on values, beliefs, developing compassion for other people's beliefs, and how to reverse patterns of self-destruction.    About Melissa Monte:Melissa Monte is one of today's influential and thought-provoking explorers of the mindset and positive energy. She's known for her ability to educe and explain complex ideas with humor and clarity, in a way that deeply connects with a wide audience. On her popular, heartfelt podcast “Mind Love,” she discusses mindset shifts, energy frequencies and modern mindfulness through raw stories, personal experience and inspiring interviews. Melissa's ability to connect with her audience is largely due to what some call an extreme amount of life experience. She was a victim of sexual assault, twice. She suffered the loss of a close friend by suicide. She lost a parent from lymphoma. For ten years, she was consumed by a dangerous eating disorder, that led to chronic intestinal damage, both of which she overcame against the odds. And she was emotionally trapped in a manipulative relationship with a sociopath that ultimately landed her in jail for someone else's crime. Melissa Monte is a certified yoga teacher and reiki healer. She's also certified in Accelerated Free Fall Skydiving and she's a student of meditation and mindfulness practices. Melissa started her career in digital media and was the Vice President of a startup when she fully realized her passion of helping people become their best selves. Her countless hours of research and self-experimentation contribute to her vast knowledge of improving the human condition. She lives in Santa Monica with her husband; they have a dog named Maverick Danger that fills their hearts. She spends her free time doing yoga, slacklining, and drinking matcha lattes by the beach.   Inside this episode, Melissa shares: What makes Melissa feel most alive  How you need to interact more with the world Why you have to stay strong in your controversial views Her mindset on allowing your values to be concrete but your beliefs to be flexible How you can cultivate deeper compassion and curiosity for other people's beliefs Melissa's process for what she does when she gets triggered How to reverse self-destruction patterns   You can find more about Melissa at:Website | Instagram | Podcast Links:Dear Fat People MORNING MIND LOVE (You can also text “MORNING” to 33777 to sign up)   Check out our Hungry for Happiness community for more details, programs, and tips on how to thrive as a wellness coach! Today's episode idea came to me last month, with everything happening here in the states with Covid, injustices and people's behavior overall. During some of my personal work, I found myself reflecting on some of mentors/heroes/people I hold in high regard. Soooo I figured why not share some of that with you humans. These are strong attributes, practices, and constants that I see in the humans I guess you could say I aspire to be like - in literally every aspect of my life: 1.) Stay true to themselves Go figure, right? The first step of this is to obviously have a deep and growing understanding of self. We can't stay to true to something we are not yet aware of. You can tell they are on their own team. They make self discovery a priority, and then they stay true to that. Well, to the parts they want to cultivate. Obviously part of self discovery is finding less than desirable things out about ourselves. Or that's been my journey anyway. They own all the parts, stay true to their true self, while being aware of the ugly parts too. 2.) Stay true to their values Hiiiiiii obviously this is a huge one for me. And it was one of the biggest and best pieces advice I received early in business. I actually shared this in an IG post a week or so ago. Our values permeate everything right? They drive our beliefs and therefore our actions. Their values are clear to me. Not in that they state them, but that they live them out. I see them in their life. In the way they use their voice, or lead, or coach, or run their company. How they process things. It's no secret that I think knowing your core values is one of the most important things we can get clear on as human beings. Know them, and then stand firm in them. 3.) Have a firm philosophy & speak their truth without apology  My heroes, they're just so grounded, you know? Like they just feel so freaking grounded. Like they are standing on firm ground. I guess they speak their truth without reservation. Not because they believe it and won't hear anything else. But because they've done the work. They've taken in A LOT of information over years and have landed where they are. I am not articulating this well. But I hope you get it. They speak clearly and firmly.  4.) Life long learners. There's not much to elaborate on this one. They are not stagnant and they are open to learning. While they are firm in their values and philosophies, they are open to conversations and learning from new perspectives. I think this comes natural to VERY FEW human beings if we're being honest. It's extremely dangerous to think you have no more to learn about a topic. ANY topic. I'll leave it at that. 5.) They dream big I do think that some people are dreamers. That some people have an easier time dreaming big. As a highly analytical, realistic and practical personality type, dreaming does not come easily to me. It's very scary actually. And you might be like, but Annie, you traveled the world for a year and a half, and are now six weeks later, closing on 5 acres and land want to build your dream house. I GET IT. You might be confused as I am aware my life can look like that of a dreamer. FACTS: I married a dreamer. And he married an action taker. So we do the things. His dreams scare me, but also, have helped me to be open to dreaming big. And he gets to see those dreams come true because if you give me a task, I will stop at almost nothing to complete that task. On this note, I'll say that my mentors/heroes are dreamers in large part because they are not afraid of failing. Not that they don't acknowledge that they can fail. But they welcome challenges within the dream and are willing to adjust where needed during the process. They simply believe the dream can happen, and they are deserving of it. Which is where I get caught up most of the time. Maybe you relate. 6.) They act big - they do the things When I say act big I am really saying the take ac...

I am giving back more to my world...and this feels awesome! Thank you, Trish...God has given you a gift to inspire others to choose joy instead of sadness in their lives! GOD SAYS ARE YOU WONDERFUL, WHY? Because you have a life. Because He does not make mistakes. Because this world needs light, love and of the 7 billion+ humans alive right now, there needed to be you. Because there is no one who has existed before like you. Because you are fearfully and wonderfully made - look at the science of biology and the chances of you being born. (1 in 400 trillion) Because you are valuable and have dignity. Do you realize what has to happen for you to be born, and the chances you came out as you? Have an active plan to detox negative, distracted thinking that doesn't serve you. (gratitude, old vs new me, action, breath work, anxiety) Live with a mindset of simplicity. (don't overcomplicate, reduce comparison, limit technology, track how you spend your time and know what you want) Spend time with God (ask for Him to show you what He sees in you) Get obsessed with the positive and with your ownership over your feelings (process your feelings, your thoughts, your perspective, your statements - "I'm so busy" > Hunter boots example, slow down, take action and prove to yourself that you aren't actually as busy as you think" BELIEVE IT INTO AN ACTIVE PLACE Repeat, repeat, repeat. Focus on progressive growth and micro-belief changes. It's more important to believe hard than to work hard. Figure out what is keeping you from believing how you should. You are important not because of what you do, because of how busy you are, but because of you. Listen, this is radical. This is bold. This is unusual living. But for me,

149 - #4 Low-Cost Marketing Idea: In-Service Presentations

It's No Secret with Dr T.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2019 5:48

If you want to grow your business doing in-service talks and presentations is one of the most cost-effective tactics you can use, and best of all you get to control the content and pace of the conversation.   On Episode 148 my guest Clive Maloney discussed the six vital steps required to improve your public speaking skills, and if you do a lot of public speaking, I highly recommend going back and listening to this episode.  Start Small Now, I won’t go into the six steps on today’s mini-episode, but one of the tips Clive suggested when you’re just starting, or if you’re nervous about public speaking, is to start small. And there’s no better way to start small than providing in-service talks and presentations to people, businesses and organisations that can refer people to your business. Conversation With A Plan One thing I will mention further is how Clive Maloney refers to presentations as ‘conversations with a plan,’ which is a perfect description. You are just talking with people, except for having it all planned out, even the objections. In-Service Explained If you’re not sure what I mean by an in-service presentation, let me give you an example. A Podiatrist could organise a short 15-20 minute presentation on a particular aspect of podiatry to a small group of practitioners at a local Doctors or Physiotherapy clinic. Ideally, the presentation will be on an area of interest to the Podiatrist, or about a service they want to promote. This applies to every profession or business. Don’t do a presentation if it’s of no interest and there’s no purpose behind it. If You Feel Intimidated If you feel intimidated presenting to other professionals in your industry, start with non-professionals — however a presentation for your local hairdressing salon, health food shop, and gym or accounting firm. If you want to have a successful business, you have to do things that are not always comfortable, and public speaking does fit under this heading, even if the audience is small. It's All About How You Think I have spoken to a lot of health professionals and business owners, and one common theme I hear is they want to be busier, and they want to attract more new people to their business, however, their budget is limiting their growth options. I disagree...it's not their budget that is limiting their growth options; it's their thinking. There's No Cost Yes, it costs money if you want to advertise using traditional media and even online adverts is not free; however, it costs you nothing but time to organise and provide an in-service presentation about your profession or business. Six Pillars of Marketing In both my books, It's No Secret, There's Money In Podiatry, and It’s No Secret There’ Money In Small Business I discuss the Six Pillars of Marketing.  Professional Referrers Non-professional Referrers Internal Marketing External Marketing Verbal Marketing Web-Based Marketing All marketing pillars should be used for promoting your business; however, some marketing pillars are far more expensive to implement. Pillar Number Five - Verbal Marketing  Providing in-service presentations comes under pillar number five - Verbal Marketing and most verbal marketing is relatively inexpensive, however, if you're not comfortable talking in front of people you will find this pillar challenging to build and develop. Who Is Your Business Spokesperson? But if you're serious about having a successful business, you need to get over your fear, or you need to employ someone else who can take on this role. Every successful business needs a spokesperson and if that’s never going to be you, then find someone who will be. When you get in-service presentations working for you, you’ll notice immediately the positive impact it has on your business. The more in-service presentation I did for my podiatry business, the faster it grew. Solopreneurs But what do you do if you work by yourself and can't find someone else to do the in-service presentation for you? Well, you'll have to sit back and watch your competition grow instead. On a serious note, if you genuinely have a fear of public speaking, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com and let's discuss it further. I managed to get through Primary School, High School and University without ever giving a public presentation, so when it comes to the fear of public speaking, I GET IT. I had the worst time titling this episode. For some reason, my in-show note of “I Get It, I Get It” just didn’t feel proper. Within, I talk about how Melissa McBride deserves an Emmy despite The Walking Dead not being a really good show anymore. I talk a lot about my obsession with t-shirts and my pursuit of reaching Handsome Bane’s level. I got to dig around in the comic crates at New Dimension Comics in the Ohio Valley Mall. I mourn the possible end of Derrick Rose’s career. I give Mondays a little credit. And I recommend Hiro Beats’ “Shout Out To FaceTime”, Frasier, and the Better In The Dark podcast. But I also address the Matt Lauer situation. This specific topic is the reason I couldn’t give this episode a lackadaisical title. In it, I take Savannah Guthrie to task for the way she defended Lauer due to their relationship while barely giving credit to the victim(s) who came forward. I’ll let you listen to it but in the words of Stevland Hardaway Morris… I ain’t gonna stand for it. You ain’t right either Kathie Lee. Leadership, Wellness, and Concierge Medicine   Are you struggling with your health and wellness? Are you feeling stretched thin, in a mental fog, constantly fatigued, and left with no time for yourself?   As a fellow young leader balancing all of life’s demands, I GET IT.     In this episode, I talk about my own health journey.   In May of this year, I took a health and wellness sabbatical from my full-time job. I was burnt out—unhappy with my lack of productivity, attention to detail, and the fact I had zero energy for my husband and toddler (or for much of anything, really). It was time to do something about it.   My journey towards health and wellness finally gained traction when I found the right physician. For me, it is Dr. Bill Baer, who you will hear from in this podcast. He introduced me to concierge medicine—something that many of my peers have also adopted with success.   Since that time, I’ve developed a strong team approach to my health. My team and I are in constant contact—we bounce ideas off each other and explore new solutions. And I can honestly say, I am feeling better than I have in years.   I hope that sharing my story will help other hyper-involved people suffering from overwhelm and burnout find their own path to success.     Topics discussed in this episode:   Meet Dr. Baer (3:02) What is concierge medicine? (4:00) How is concierge medicine different from traditional medicine? (7:20) What’s the difference between concierge medicine, executive physicals, functional medicine and integrated medicine? (10:00) Health trends Dr. Baer is seeing now (14:05) “Systemic inflammation drives a lot of health issues down the line” (17:00) Importance of a health team (18:00) “One size fits all doesn’t work” (20:35) Wellness Groups (21:00) Bonus Questions (25:06)   Notable and Quotable:   With concierge medicine, the physician can be a better partner on the patient’s healthcare journey. #conciergemedicine #successfulgenerations   “We ask the questions that you may not know to ask” —Dr. Bill Baer #conciergemedicine #successfulgenerations   Imagine having a physician caring for 400 patients vs. 2,100. #conciergemedicine #successfulgenerations   Functional medicine tends to include more holistic approaches including nutrition, acupuncture, mindfulness, etc. A concierge physician looks to integrate these things with traditional medicine. #conciergemedicine #successfulgenerations   A concierge physician is your medical quarterback. #conciergemedicine #successfulgenerations   “Regarding health trends, we’re seeing a lot related to cardiovascular, malignancies and mental health issues, primarily related to increased stressors and depression.” —Dr. Bill Baer #conciergemedicine #successfulgenerations   “All the weight on your shoulders, the 24/7 access, full weekends...You just can’t hide. As I grow with my new journey with Dragonfly Advisory Services (DAS ), I have had many conversations with individuals who have just lost a loved one. Even though I have felt the same emotions as they have maybe not necessarily on the same scale, “I Get It” and I even sometimes am not sure what to say. The politically correct thing to say obviously is “I am so sorry for your loss, my condolences”. We try so hard to find the comforting words or right statement. For myself right now I most likely never met the person, but if that individual is seeking assistance, I can only imagine how much they loved the deceased. If you lose someone unexpectedly the pain is probably so deep and raw there is no explanation of the emotion. Personally if you are going to offer your condolences, make sure you understand the means of death, you might think that’s nuts, but realistically the emotions involved vary on the means of death. From palliative all the way to murder. There are some wonderful reads on the subject, such as “Things No Grieving Person Wants To Hear, by Scott Simon Books” I am sure that each and every one of us at one time or another stopped at the door to a Funeral Home, and said “I do not know what to say” It Is not easy that’s for sure, but having your presence sometimes means more than the words could. So if you find yourself in a situation, where you have to go to a funeral home, but you are thinking of not going to avoid it, because it is easier, than facing the family and friends , think twice. You should not avoid the uncomfortable situation but educate yourself and know there is one language of grief you may not know about and it is “Silence” that unspoken language is often enough, there may be tears, unrest, but just being there helps with the healing. Technically Living Podcast - Tips, Tricks, & Resources for Mastering Technology

There is light at the end of the tunnel I promise you. However, for the next couple years yet we are all going to be stuck with having to remember a bunch of passwords for a whole plethora of accounts. Some of which we only access once or twice a year. October is National Cyber Awareness Month and in this week's episode, I will share some tools and tips on setting great passwords, using different ones on each site, and most importantly discuss why it is so important to follow all these standards for password creation in the first place. I GET IT. You're sick of all this security talk. Why can't companies figure it out and protect your information better?  That is a really good question. ...and I don't have a solid answer for you. For instance, at the end of last month (Sept 22nd) Yahoo! announced that upwards of 500 million of their accounts have been stolen in a hack. The sickening part is they could have been taken 2 years ago and Yahoo! is just now announcing it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/technicallyliving/support

Your Kick Ass Life Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 16, 2016 22:40

Originally I had titled this post, ‘What no one tells you about getting sober”, but really it’s what no one tells you about life. In early 2011 I knew I needed to get sober. It’s a longer story, one you can read about here, but a couple months into my recovery, I realized I was going to have to face something that I had never done before: Face my feelings sober. And it’s no shock that many people that get sober from drugs and/or alcohol, turn to another “drug”: shopping, relationships, exercise, food, over-achieving, busyness, Internet, you-name-it. Whatever they can get their hands on to numb out with. Why? My guess is that they get sober and feelings come up. They don’t drink anymore, so they have to turn to something else to cope and numb. We live in a culture that doesn’t teach us how to feel our feelings. There’s no class in school for it, and many families don’t talk openly about it. And even if we kind of know what to do with our feelings, rarely are we encouraged to do so. The generations before us were mostly emotionally illiterate– meaning vulnerability (which is what encouraging the expression of feelings is) is simply not fostered. Personally, I grew up in a house with a metric shit-ton of love, but when it came to vulnerability– Nope. So in 2011 when I found myself sober, the irony was almost funny: When drinking I had my days feeling like I would crawl out of my skin if I didn’t have a drink (or 5), and then when I got sober, I felt like I had crawled out of my skin– like I was this raw person walking around bumping into everything. Emily McCombs says so eloquently about this stage: “Snorting coke is not hardcore. Walking around feeling whatever fucked-up shit you feel, without escape, 24/7, is fucking hardcore.” And yes, it’s fucking hardcore. I think many of us get to a point where we feel shit come up– shame, disappointment (in others or ourselves), fear, worry, feeling like we don’t belong, *insert your hard feeling here*, and we instinctively run. Far away. Into a bottle of booze, an entire pizza, Facebook, online dating, food restricting, being busy, *insert your choice of numbing here*. We get so used to doing this we don’t even know we’re doing it. And you might think– “Well, what’s the harm? Those are SHITTY feelings! No one wants to feel those, DUH!” Seriously, I used to say that too. And sometimes my addiction still whispers it in my ear, claiming it is the comfortable and easy solution. Like the time last year when my son was really struggling in school. Like the kind of struggling where my heart cracks open and I wonder if I would get arrested if I just kept him home all day and we just hung out and I would make sure no one came over at all, ever to talk to him for fear of hurting him. I was sitting at a stoplight and my mind slowed down and I thought, “I should have been doing more to advocate for him. I’ve been wasting time, we’ve lost time. What if he grows up to be an addict too? What if he starts drinking as a teenager like I did? What if because of my negligence in advocating for his special needs he becomes a heroin addict? I am seriously the worst mother. Gawd, I need a glass of wine.” Just like that. Because to BE in that place of feeling like a failure, to BE in that place of heartbreak for him is too much. My brain tells me I cannot bear the weight of this pain. My heart panics and cannot take it. Wine would make it better. It would go away. And luckily for me, I have the tools (I’ll get to those in a minute) to see this quickly when it happens, and not drink. But, I GET IT. I get that it totally blows to BE with those feelings. It’s raw, and brutal, and fucking hardcore. But, here’s what I know for certain happens when we keep numbing… The feelings don’t go away. The don’t just dissipate into the atmosphere with every sip or bite or mile on the treadmill. They kind of get shoved deeper into your body where they just wait. And they don’t just sit there. They kind of bounce around and manifest as anxiety or maybe depression for some or negative self-talk or self-loathing. And then we feel like shit and we don’t know why. The feelings don’t just go away. They fester and eat away at you. Until, one day, they have an exit point. Feeling your feelings can be multi-layered. You may have trauma, which typically needs professional help from a trained therapist or other mental health professional. But, what I can do here is give you an example of what it might look like to get through feelings those hard feelings. The example I gave above of feeling guilty, anxious, and afraid for my son. Because I’ve been doing this work for so long, I am quickly able to recognize that stream of thoughts and see what’s happening. This takes practice. You might spend days on end having those thoughts. Try to be mindful of it and see what’s happening. If you can’t stop them as they come, that’s okay. I want at first the win for you to know what’s happening. Then, cry if you need to. Scream if it’s what feels right. Get really fucking angry. Say as many bad words as necessary, journal all your feelings out, write scathing letters you’ll never send. Just let it out. Next, talk to someone who’s earned the right to hear your story. Not the bank teller, not your condescending mother-in-law, not your judgmental neighbor, not your friend that is only sometimes reliable, but someone who loves you for all your humanness and human-mess. If you don’t have this person, I know it’s hard, and you may not have this person for various reasons, but I beg you to reach deep on your courage and vulnerability and keep trying to find her. The other thing is practicing compassion to myself. I made up that I was the worst mother because I didn’t advocate for my son enough. I didn’t do any Autism 5k’s ← Bad. I didn’t know about non-profits that had free parent liaisons ← Bad. I didn’t know what my rights were as a parent concerning his IEP ← Bad, all bad. But, the truth is: everyone falls short sometimes. In regards to my son, I didn’t know about a lot of things that were available to me because previously we hadn’t needed them. Practicing self-compassion is just that: a practice. No one gets their yoga or meditation practice down on the first, second or third try. They keep at it over and over again and sometimes they have good days and sometimes they don’t. Same with self-compassion. But, the point is to try. My hope is that you pull something out of this– even if it’s just knowing that you need to try to slow down on the numbing to face what’s happening inside of you. Solicit the help of your trusted friends. Know that your feelings are normal and okay. And please, be kind to yourself.

Jeff Charbonneau  2013 National Teacher of the Year STEM Teacher (Zillah High School --  Zillah, WA)    January Contest: Win a Copy of Carol Jago's With Rigor for All by emailing me a lesson that worked (email)    Segment I – Background and Inspiration Tell your story. Where are you from and how long have you been teaching? What classes have you taught?  – Jeff was the 2013 National Teacher of the Year. He is out of the classroom right now but he will return next year. He teaches at the same high school that he attended, Zillah High School.   Who has helped you in your journey to become a master teacher? – Jeff asks for help about every 30 minutes. Yet, he had two outstanding cooperating teachers during his student teacher experience. They had completely different styles, one was traditional the other was affectionate and loving. Both were outstanding educators and what he learned was that you need to be true to yourself.  It is important for other teachers to know that we all have had setbacks in the classroom. Identify an instance in which you struggled as a teacher and explain what you learned from that experience. – It seems like that sums up every day of teaching in his career. One experience  that stands out was when he had a fish tank while teaching biology. They had trouble stabilizing the tank. And after being absent one day, he returned to see that the fish were dead. The tank had been smelling and in his absence one student thought it was wise to pour perfume into the fish tank. The worse thing he could have done was to yell at the student. No learning would come of that. Instead, he tries to stop and think about what is going on in their brains first before he reacts. What role does literacy play in the science classroom? – It plays a huge part. One colleague taught a Sci-Fi Literature class. Jeff has jealous at first but then realized that he could create similar experiences too, he just needed to find ways to make science come alive. For example, when teaching atomic theory he can have students read Neils Bohr. His students read a play entitled Copenhagen, about the 1941 meeting of physicists Neils Bohr and Werner Heisenberg. What is one thing that you love about the classroom?  – Jeff loves being there at the moment of discovery. Students will work with difficult material and all of a sudden students will scream "I GET IT!!! I GET IT!!!" He thoroughly enjoys those moments that open their eyes.  Segment II — Digging into the Teacher Bag of Goodies    What book do you recommend to a developing teacher? -- ParkerPalmer's The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life, 10th Anniversary Edition was a book that inspired him as an undergrad. A more recent book is Dave Burgess' Teach Like a PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator. He also recommends 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, which he used in a leadership class with students.   What is one thing a teacher can do outside the classroom that can pay off inside the classroom? –2 ways: 1. Place yourself where the students are. Get them to see you not just as a teacher. Let them see you working for their benefit of them. Go to the sporting events, be at the dances, stay after school. 2. Be a life-long learner. Be involved in your craft and show your students that you are watching the Discovery Channel or staying current in the latest science news.  Is there an internet resource that you can recommend which will help teachers grow professionally? –Jeff has looked into Twitter in the past year to further his professional development. He participates in education chats like #ntchat (new teacher chat). What he likes about Twitter is that it connects you with people. Make Magazine is another place that he goes to for ...
