Three brothers and one other guy talk about Dad life
Big news - Tyler's gonna be a dad! We discuss the things Tyler has to unlearn from the rest of us, our Dad accidentally(?) roasting all of us, and how long we'd all last on the show "Alone." Even when Tyler presents with life-altering (and incredibly relevant to this show) news, we still can't stay on topic very long. Two episodes in a couple weeks look at us being actual real podcasters!
We pulled this one out of the vault (Kevin forgot to release it)! Gideon says a bad word, Andy goes on a run, Derek's kids call him by his name, Tyler has a very relatable "You know what I hate?" - it's a fun one. We actually recorded this back in February, so you can hear the joy in our voices that the last 7 months has drained from our bodies. Also there's a couple moments where Andy sounds like he's recording from inside his own dishwasher, sorry about that, he'll be fined. We missed you!
The phrase "HeyDad's stupidest episode ever" gets thrown around a lot these days, but we're pretty confident this one takes the throne. We discuss apartment timeshares, discover maternity clothes, debate the best ways to get a pharmacist's romantic attention, and introduce a new character: Corey Allis. *This episode was recorded pre-Coronavirus, so you will hear a glorious dearth of quarantine, social-distancing, shelter-in-place, etc. references. Ryan Rucker is an old friend of Tyler's and a much better dad than any of the HeyDad guys. Tyler and Kevin talk to him about his experiences as a black father, a GirlDad, an aspiring ice cream tycoon, and so much more. Well y'all we're sheltering in place. Spending a whole lot of time with our families. Allowing more screen time than ever. So do you want to listen to us complain and make dumb jokes? To listen to Kevin whine? To listen to Tyler find zen in a soup label? To be harangued into buying Andy's dog? To hear whatever weird thing Derek does during the intro? Put on some headphones, find a corner of your house, hug your knees, rock back and forth, and hang out with us. Happy New Year! It's time for a topic that's been requested a lot - potty training! The guys discuss the various ways they've messed this up, judging other parents, mailing it in, and provide zero practical advice. ICYMI: We launched a Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/heydad If you love this show and want to help us make more, please consider supporting us there. Come on dooo it.
We're back with a very different episode from our usual silliness. Kevin goes deep into the issue of guns and mass shootings in America, prompted by the fears that he (and so many others) feel when dropping their kids off at school. We know this isn't what you're used to, but being a dad colors every single aspect of our lives - silly stuff and serious stuff alike. This is a long and emotional exploration of an issue that we are very bad at talking about in America, and we hope that you take the time to dive in with us. Let's try to talk about this without just yelling at each other. And fear not, we'll be back with a much more normal episode (Potty Training!) very soon.
School's been back in for a while so we should probably talk about it. Parent teacher conferences, standing up to fake bullies, explicit lanyards, "yes, and" with your kid's teacher as they tell you what your kid is doing wrong - this episode has all the good stuff. New segment! Dad facts, where we talk about basic things we should already know but for sure don't. ICYMI: We launched a Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/heydad If you love this show and want to help us make more, please consider supporting us there. Come on dooo it.
Halloween recap! The guys talk about a T-Rex fight at school, Tyler's encounter with a banshee, Kevin calls his sweet beautiful oldest son a wuss, and there's a lot of arguing about tootsie rolls. Also somehow we make "it's a me, Mario!" sexy... Also "You know what I hate?" is back, and somehow the whole segment is about Taco Bell. ICYMI: We launched a Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/heydad If you love this show and want to help us make more, please consider supporting us there. Come on dooo it.
And we're back! Season 3 kicks off with quite possibly our best episode ever. There comes a time in a man's life when he needs to stop making people. That moment recently came for Andy, and naturally Tyler and Kevin decided to chaperone the whole experience. Derek had work or something, he will regret not being there to his dying breath. The car ride there, tailgating in the hospital parking lot, spitballing vasectomy-related business ideas, telling stories of all the dumb stuff Kevin did during his vasectomy...if you're not excited about this episode then we probably shouldn't hang out. AND MORE BIG NEWS: We're launching a Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/heydad If you love this show and want to help us make more, please consider supporting us there. It will help us never have a 3 month break between seasons ever again.
If being a dad is "the most important job you'll ever have," then it's time for a performance review. Tyler does some very basic internet research on how to do one of these, then pulls Kevin into the office with HR to talk through his performance this last quarter. Also, the BuzzFeed game is back! A very special epsiode of the HeyDad Podcast, where we get a chance to interview Shea Serrano from The Ringer. He's an amazing writer, full-on Thing on the Internet, and a Dad of three boys. We talk about positivity, hard conversations with his kids, and which rapper/character from The Office he would choose to be his dad. FYI: There is some adult language in the interview - so if you're listening with kids, you've been warned! :) Also, "You know what I hate?" is back! It's Father's Day! So naturally we asked the only non-dad on the show to talk about his parenting angst. Tyler shares his perspective on losing the "non" in his title, and the rest of the guys share about how and why being a dad means so much to them. Also somehow Tyler transitions from an endorsement of survivor into a new take on an old classic - "You know what I miss?" Call anytime and leave us a voicemail with a story of your kid being a psycho - (415) 340-2349 ALSO - Buy your Father's Day gifts RIGHT NOW. Lies! A story about Kevin's 1st grader regularly coming home with wildly incorrect information becomes a wider conversation about lying and kids. Andy shocks everyone with some truly terrible boyfriend behavior in the cold open, and the guys tell very real stories about the worst lie they've ever told (and we unintentionally lifted some of this from The Office, but imitation is the highest form and all that). Mother's Day! The guys describe how watching our wives give birth makes us borderline worship them, Tyler seamlessly works a Beyonce reference into a discussion about birth, we all talk about some of the things we love about watching the women in our life be moms, and DEREK INTERVIEWS OUR MOM. Also we thought it would be a good idea to start a Mother's Day episode with a circumcision anecdote, because we're idiots. Tyler takes the wheel and finally gets his chance to convince us that having a dog is like having a kid. Tyler lays out the similarities, Andy makes some confessions, and Derek finds a way to mention his remodel again. The discussion ends with a story that was almost too gross for this podcast. Plus we have a dog theme song that plays for so, so long. How, just how does everything get so messy so quickly? The podfathers discuss messiness, conflict about said messiness, expectation setting, and how to deal with one of the more annoying realities of parenting. You know what I hate is back, as well as "Is my Kid a Psycho?" Having a kid turns even the most optimistic of us into worriers. You love them so much and they're so dumb and dangerous and helpless. In this episode we talk about irrational worries, the co-parenting dynamic when one person is more worried about something, what this podcast will be like when our kids are teenagers, and so much more. Also Derek basically does an unpaid ad for Disneyland during "Is my kid a psycho" and we all resent him for it. Episode 26. What do you do when your kid is too hard on himself? What is the right amount of worrying about a kid? Is it ok to project current behavior into the future (what will be be like when he's 15)? How do you teach a kid to value some adult's opinions over others? But it's not all too heavy-handed and whiny, we do our usual stupid stuff too. There's our first unanimous "yes" to an "Is my kid a psycho?" voicemail, and You Know What I Hate? is back! Heyoooo it's new episode time. Today we're talking about when you have to be a dad in front of other people, and all of the complications that brings. Derek lives at his in-laws for two months, Andy delegates potty training to a baby sitter, and Kevin's kids desperately want to be dropped off at Grandma's house, rather than having Kevin stay and hang out. In other news, the BuzzFeed game is back and also we have a new "Is my kid a psycho" and you are NOT READY for the ending. Y'all be cool ok it's time to talk about secrets. Specifically, how our kids cannot handle them at all and make the process of keeping any kind of secret/surprise from them a total nightmare for the whole family. We also talk about creating a vibe in the house where kids don't feel the need to hide stuff, we tell each other some of our own secrets, and submit a new entry for the world's shortest, saddest story (we're on your corner Hemingway). Holiday episode! We're not gonna bury the lede here, Derek uncorks an incredible story at the end of this episode that will shake you to your very core. We also talk about whether the holidays are better/worse with kids, Kevin tells a story of how he accidentally badgered his daughter into putting her life in danger, Andy briefly nerds out about gingerbread houses, and the guys all have way too much fun with Grinch and Willy Wonka references. Don't forget! Call anytime and leave us a voicemail with a story of your kid being a psycho - (415) 340-2349 HeyDad: The code "heydadpodcast" gets you $10 off at HeyDad.com - do it! Episode 22 is all about keeping score, the pettiest, most tempting, and most unsatisfying aspect of co-parenting. (Extremely Emperor Palpatine voice): Good, gooooood, let the resentment grow. This is part two of the conversation we started last episode, and it's a good one. It starts with Andy telling an amazing story involving public transportation and diarrhea, and it ends with a new segment: "Is my kid a psycho?" -- where YOU can call in and tell us about your kid and we will give our professional opinion on how weird your kid is. We've reached the final level of parenting: judging other kids. Season Premiere! The long wait is over. This episode centers on a conversation we've been having a lot lately: how do I take care of myself while I'm taking care of all of these other people? How do I ask for help? Do I still get to have needs even though all of these shorter people living in my house spend all day yelling their needs at me? But you know us - it's not all heavy. Tyler tries to make the whole episode about classic rock, Derek talks about an eight year old who wanted to fight him, Andy's nephew makes a strange artistic request for the cast on his forearm, and Kevin complains a lot. Like a LOT. Season two! Grado Labs:Since 1953 Grado Labs has hand built headphones & cartridges in Brooklyn, NY.Through three generations the family has kept the tradition of putting sound first. Season finale! Podcasts are doing "seasons" now, and we're not trying to get left out so guess what? SEASON FINALE. So many questions left unanswered for next season. Will they? Won't they? Who shot Mr. Burns? Will these guys ever stop talking over each other(no)? Can Derek keep raising the stakes for his weird intros(yes)? Also we talk about sports, and how to be a good sports dad. Andy tells us about his first fight, and clearly misremembers how cool he was. Kevin tries not to resent his kid for not being as into sports as he is. Tyler talks about peeing his pants on third base and injuring several 10 year olds. Derek is on the podcast too. Back to school means so many things. Exhausted kids, annoying pick-up dads, pants-peeing, trolling kindergartners by making them spell hippopatamus, and probably other things too. But we didn't talk about the other things we mostly talk about the stuff I listed there in that last sentence. Episode 18 is all about the topic we get asked about more than any other - the transition from work-mode to dad-mode. Why is it so hard? Also Kevin talks about the carte blanche he's given his kids to make fun of him, and Tyler finds a dad-nicknames website that we enjoy more than we have any right to. We're back! Plus, Derek writes his family rules, and we welcome our first sponsor - Circle, with Disney! We're back with episode 16! The guys talk about technology and our pathetic attempts to integrate it into our kids' lives without ruining them. Andy talks about the 80+ times he's seen Trolls with his kid, Derek laments Atley's YouTube obsession, and Kevin describes Julien as a tech addict who needs another hit. You have questions, we have answers maybe. We're tackling the big stuff - why dads take so long to poop, how to be encouraging without being patronizing, should boys sit or stand to pee, do aunts/uncles have to buy kid presents for every holiday - giving the hard-hitting, no-nonsense answers the people need. Father's Day y'all! The most important day of the year approaches and buckle up because we are extra full of ourselves this week. Tyler's gift to the dads is free rein to brag about what they're awesome at as dads, Kevin's gift to Tyler is a a cruel podcast edit, the guys opine on their ideal no-shame Father's Day celebration, and Derek introduces our first sponsor!* Happy Father's Day everybody. To all the dads out there hustling and trying to figure it out too, we see you and we love you. This whole HeyDad thing is our love letter and life raft to you. Use the promo code "HeyDadPodcast" at HeyDad.com for $10 off of the HeyDad play box! *Not a real sponsor
HeyDad.com is finally live! The guys celebrate the launch of HeyDad.com, we talk about the journey to get to this point (What. A. Ride.), what we hope it accomplishes, and how you can join. Also, the guys pitch Kevin on new HeyDad boxes and they are terrible. You get to vote on which ones are the best/worst! Loser is going to have to let the other guys pick the license plate holder that goes on his car for a year. HIGH STAKES. Use the code HeyDadPodcast for $10 off at HeyDad.com
Confession time on the HeyDad podcast. Even though we do a (marginally) good job projecting our woke, feminist, bona fides...sometimes deep down we're still cavemen. In this episode we get into the idea of extra credit - wanting to be graded on a curve for just doing normal dad stuff. It's bad and we're not proud of it, but we do make a lot of jokes about it...maybe that will help? Also, "You know what I hate?" is back and we're probably going to offend some people. Episode 12!
Usually it's just moms telling their birth stories and stealing all of the glory because they actually had the baby - but we were kinda involved too! So we're telling ours. Everything changes when you become a dad, except you're still the same guy you were before. The HeyDad guys make that very clear as they tell the stories of the day they became dads. Andy spaces out and forgets social norms, Derek can't do basic adult things, and Kevin takes himself too seriously and cries a lot. Tyler is just kinda there.
Episode 10! The guys get together to look back on their immense success. We share some of the clips and stories that we weren't able to fit into previous episodes, since the listening public can only handle so much wisdom and laughter. We reminisce about Derek's ongoing love affair with Taco Bell, the time Kevin roofied Andy on a plane, and a bunch of other good stuff. Also, Derek tries to quit the podcast. Recorded live on the main stage at Coachella.
The last few weeks we've been busy working on all the other HeyDad stuff - shooting our promo video and getting HeyDad.com closer to launch - but we're back, and as self-important as ever! In this episode, we talk about being a dad and what it's like to play the Comparison Game with your other dad-friends (and with your non-dad friends.) We also get into whether turning complaining into a competition is a good thing (spoiler: it's great, everyone loves it!) Also BuzzFeed is back!
Having kids makes building and maintaining friendships waaaay more complicated. Tyler (non-Dad) and the three dads hash it out - why don't we see each other as much? Why is it such a big deal to miss a kid's nap? Why did Derek miss Tyler's wedding? Is it ok to use your kids as an excuse to get out of things you didn't want to attend anyway (yes)? All of this plus a new segment called "you know what I hate?" where we just rant about stuff. Episode 8!
Taking family photos is inarguably the worst thing there is. The guys talk about why we even bother, explore the seemingly illogical desire for a third party to tell you that your kids are bad, and we interview a photographer (who is also married to one of us) about how to take photos with your kids. Also once again we have to talk about Andy taking his pants off.
The Holidays! The guys talk about presents, Santa, managing expectations, we get into some hot takes about Holiday-themed coffee drinks...all the important stuff. Also Derek unleashes an epic monologue about Christmas-themed TV episodes. It's a good one.
Our first interview! Josh Lovelace of NEEDTOBREATHE joins us to talk about his new kids record: "Josh Lovelace and Friends Present: Young Folk" (it hit #1 on iTunes!). We talk about being a great dad despite the constant need to travel, recording vegetable-related music in the middle of the night, and (of course) we play a stupid game with Josh and giggle a lot. A lot of people are saying that we're better interviewers than Barbara Walters, Marc Maron, David Letterman, etc. and they're all right.
Thanksgiving! Turkey, mashed potatoes, football, family and (once upon a time)...sweet sweet naps. The guys talk about navigating Thanksgiving with kids, Derek pays a weird homage to his dad via "stuffin' muffins," and Tyler tells us all about the worst Thanksgiving ever. Best day of the year!
Vacation Dad - can he be more than a cranky, hurried, harried ruiner of fun? The guys discuss vacations, how they've changed post-kids, and what to do about it. Derek's kids learn a swear word (kinda), Andy steals some fidget spinners...it's a good one. Also the return of Buzzfeed: Real or Fake?
Episode 2 is all about how the guys made babies. We discuss gas station nachos, Kevin's x-men baby that heals from the womb, and Tyler learns where babies come from! Also, we get into our first "Dadlemma:" should I leave this full diaper for someone else to deal with?
In this inaugural episode, the guys talk about why they're starting the podcast, lie about riding motorcycles, discuss why Coach Taylor is the GOAT TV dad, learn what the STEM acronym means, rant about bad Ziploc commercials...lots of good stuff. Episode 1!
