Buck Reising and 15-year NBA veteran Olden Polynice (in for Jason Fitz) open the show with their final picks and predictions ahead of game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. They also talk about the New York Knicks and the red-hot playoffs they've had to this point... How much of a chance do we give them against either the Thunder or Spurs? Who do we think THEY would rather face? NBA insider Mark Medina joins the show to share some of his own thoughts ahead of game 7. Later, Buck and Olden weigh in on the new anti-tanking rules passed by the NBA Board of Governors... Do we think it will really fix the issue of tanking? The guys also talk some football, discussing the latest in the Brendan Sorsby case, potential AJ Brown landing spots, the dynamic between Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy in Minnesota, and more! Plus, more fun with a new edition of "Would You Rather?"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NBA veteran and human-rights activist Olden Polynice sits down with Jimmy to talk about the “old school” Jazz culture under Jerry Sloan, what he learned from playing alongside legends, and how today's NBA compares to the 80s/90s. Olden opens up about the realities of fame before social media, wild road stories, the explosion of player salaries, and why he thinks the league's effort has dipped—and what he'd do as commissioner to fix it.He also shares his improbable start in basketball (he didn't pick up the game until 16), the professor-level value of listening, and life after the cheering stops: divorce, identity, and why therapy has been a pillar for him since college. We dive into his hunger strike for Haitian refugees, visiting detention centers with TV cameras rolling, and his belief that speaking up—athletes and citizens alike—changes the world one person at a time.00:00 Introduction01:20 Life in the Old School NBA with the Utah Jazz06:30 Comparing Eras: 80s–90s vs. Today's NBA10:10 Lessons from MJ, Stockton, and Malone13:15 From Player to Coach: Growth, Mistakes, and Apologies16:30 Life After Basketball: Identity, Divorce, and Therapy20:10 Activism and the Hunger Strike for Haitian Refugees26:00 Speaking Out on Injustice: Courage and Responsibility33:10 How to Fix the NBA & Restore Effort39:20 Outro

Join us for a PRessing On in Public Relations conversation with Tamrin Olden, CEO of TOC Public Relations. Originally launched as Law Enforcement Social, starting with web design services in 2004 and then eventually providing social media services to law enforcement agencies, TOK specializes in law enforcement, fire service and public safety outreach. Following a few years of research and development, Law Enforcement Social began teaching social media classes to Southern California law enforcement agencies. Tamrin Olden began her career employed by the Chino Police Department, in Southern California. As a community relations manager, part of her duties included managing the department's social media program and public affairs operations. While working for the department, Tamrin began sharing her expertise and experiences through the teaching of social media and PIO classes with Law Enforcement Social, which was a newly formed company based out of the Los Angeles area. Tamrin subsequently took management positions at a district attorney's office and a sheriff's department, where she shared her knowledge to help improve public relations and communications for both organizations. Encouragement came from law enforcement leaders, co-workers, family, and friends that she needed to teach and provide her public relations skills and services on a full-time basis. Having no ties to a government organization also meant these same public safety leaders could now have Tamrin inside their agencies, helping steer the narrative of their missions and core values, as a contracted consultant. Tune in for real stories, practical advice, and a dose of PR inspiration. "It was like a laser tag basement with Party City decorations." Escape rooms? What are those? Well, it says here that you're locked in a room, and if you can't solve the puzzles fast enough, a zombie will get you! According to Trip Advisor, it's the top rated activity in the city. The year is 2014. Amanda Harris has just discovered her first escape room... and her life was changed forever. Since that fateful day, she has gone on to play well over 1,700 escape rooms. She is currently one of the most experienced escape room players in the country, if not the world. Amanda joins us to talk about the escape room era of yore, when most rooms were festooned with cheap locks and even cheaper furniture. The puzzles were mostly bad, and many of the games were created and run by slightly sadistic gamemasters who guarded hints like dragons sitting on their hoards. Yet she played game after game after game. Despite how terrible many of the early escape rooms were, she still loved them, and played as many as she could find. Indeed, even finding the games themselves was a challenge back then, let alone finding the gems. Those few gems, however, were absolutely incredible. That's a large part of the reason why David and Lisa created Room Escape Artist all those years ago. Tune in to this episode to hear David and Amanda reminisce about the bad old days and trade war stories about "the early days of completely bananas, insane escape rooms." I'm happy to be a small part of it!” Cheryl Arvio emailed: "Dear Marc, Loved the interview with Shannon Heaton, especially hearing about her time in Chicago and playing in sessions. My partner has known John Williams for years, and we are actually going to Brendan and Siobhan McKinney's restaurant tonight! They host sessions there on Sundays. Great coincidence to hear them mentioned on your show just as we were planning to go to their place for dinner and a James Joyce program! If we run into them, I'll mention having heard the shout out on Irish & Celtic Music Podcast! Best, Cheryl"
In this episode, I discuss the tragic collision between a Black Hawk and an American Airlines flight on January 29, 2025. While reflecting on this heartbreaking event, I address my disagreement with President Trump's attempt to politicize the tragedy by linking it to the broader debate over Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).I share my own experiences with DEI and explain why I believe it's wrong to use the victims of such a disaster as a platform for political agendas. This episode isn't about politics—it's about respecting those affected by the tragedy and resisting the temptation to turn their suffering into a talking point in an ongoing culture war
Recently, my best friend, James, and I visited the Orpheum Theatre here in Wichita, a historic venue that's been entertaining audiences since 1922. Originally, it was a vaudeville stage graced by iconic performers like Al Jolson and Harry Houdini. They still have many great shows and events, but I'd heard over the years that it was quite haunted. So, we sat down with the Executive Director, Stacee Olden, in the heart of the theatre and talked about the spirits of this grand old theatre just waiting for their next encore. We stayed for a ghost hunt that night and didn't experience anything paranormal, but it did seem like we weren't alone during our talk about the theatre. Today, on the Grave Talks, a conversation about the historic Wichita Orpheum Theatre with executive director Stacee Olden. It's been so great hearing all of the independent artists you feature on the podcast. Thank you for what you all do and maybe one of these days I'll submit some of my music for your enjoyment as well. I'm blessed to have a job I love - as a luthier at a music store in Kenosha WI. While I was working on this auto harp (just a cleaning and restringing as well as putting new support springs under some of the bars) I thought I should take a couple of pictures and send them your way. I thought you might appreciate it." Donald W White emailed a photo from Oregon: "I'm painting - - as usual. I've appreciated Celtic music for a long time (loved Fiona Ritchie's former show on NPR - "Thistle & Shamrock"), but I just became a fan while sailing from Quebec to Boston. On a cruise ship of "old people," some amazing Canadian musicians (including Nova Scotia vilionist Hayley Ryerson) performed some raucous Celtic tunes from Cape Breton Island. I'm now hooked! Count me in. Don White, A new fan from Oregon " Wolbert van Wageningen emailed: "Hi Marc, My name is Wolbert van Wageningen. I live in the North of the Netherlands. Several years ago I started listening to your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I liked it a lot because of all the independent music. But sometimes it was a bit too independent according to my taste. I forgot to listen regularly and it got out of sight and mind. In the meantime I started working (volunteering) at a small regional broadcasting company in my hometown of Winsum. I got the possibility to make my own programmes and one of them I titled " Highlands and Islands" a reference to Scotland of course, but also a reference to the region where I live (het Hogeland - Highland) and the Waddensea with small islands. Due to illness I was not able to make the show in our radiostudio, but my homestudio was good enough to make broadcastings. I started broadcasting at Mixcloud and posted my recordings there. Looking for music I discovered your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast at Mixcloud. Nice surprise! Started listening again. Thought it would be nice to reach out to you. Want to make my compliments for your shows and your perseverance in making them. Way back you were in the 100 - 200 range; now almost 700!! I promoted your show to my small group of listeners (Celtic Folk is not that big in the Netherlands) and will do so in the future. Keep up the good work! Kind regards,"

Mike Macchiarola from Olden Lane discusses NCUA-assisted credit union mergers and why we may see more of them in the near future.2. Current industry challenges: - 10% of credit unions are now CAMEL 3, 4 or 5 - ROA is at 69 basis points, lowest in a decade (excluding COVID dip) - 764 credit unions have zero or negative ROA - Rising cost of funds, asset quality concerns, fee compression3. Importance of pursuing mergers while credit unions still have "self-determination" rather than waiting for NCUA to dictate terms.4. Overview of the NCUA's Merger Partner Registry and how it's used when an assisted merger is needed.5. Process for NCUA-assisted mergers: - NCUA identifies potential acquirers from registry - Interested credit unions sign NDA and receive bidder's package - Acquirers evaluate opportunity under time pressure - NCUA seeks lowest-cost alternative but considers multiple factors6. Advice for credit unions considering assisted mergers: - Hire experienced advisors to help navigate the process - Be prepared to make decisions with imperfect information - Understand NCUA's preference for full mergers over purchase & assumptions7. Importance of maintaining strong capital position to be an attractive merger partner.8. Discussion of how NCUA balances cost considerations with ensuring long-term stability when selecting merger partners.Key Quote: "Don't get yourself to the place where the NCUA is dictating terms because your option set is closing. You owe it to your membership, your staff, your management team, your legacy of your institution, its brand and its community not to get there." - Mike MacchiarolaCall to Action: Credit unions considering mergers or concerned about their long-term viability should visit www.oldenlane.com to learn how Olden Lane can assist with strategic planning and merger navigation.

Mexican Americans have often fit uncertainly into the white/non-white binary that has goverens much of American history. After Colorado, and much of the rest of the American West, became American claimed territory after the Mexican-Americna War in 1848, thousands of formerly Mexican citizens became American citizens. Flash foward a century to post-war Denver. In the spring of 1969, Mexican American students staged a walk out in protest of poor quality education, racist teachers, and school segregation - they were met by police in riot gear, to beat and arrested dozens of peaceful protestors. Denver thus became ground zero for debates over race in the American West, a city as important to conceptions of whiteness, "minority" status, and colorblindness as any place in the South. In the award winning book, Racial Uncertainties: Mexican Americans, School Desegregation, and the Making of Race in Post-Civil Rights America (U California Press, 2022), University of Utah historian Danielle Olden tracks the history of Chicano, Latinx, and Mexican American identities through Denver's history, focusing on the lead up to the 1973 Supreme Court case, Keyes v. Denver School District No. 1. Olden tracks the remarkable and complicated story of that city's Chicano, Black, and white communities through the halting process of school desegregation, and in doing so provides an explemary lesson in the social mutability of the concept of race. ABOUT THE NEW ADS IN THE PUBLIC FEED If you've been listening to the show over the last couple of weeks, you will have noticed something new to the show. Ads placed at the beginning and ending of each episode. The show has been published regularly for almost 19 years with very few ads, outside of those for my Celtic Invasion Vacations and Patreon. I'll be honest. I'm not a huge fan of advertising…or corporations in general. And I'm still deciding whether I'm gonna continue having ads in the show. The fact is that this podcast costs a decent amount to produce as I'll tell you about later. We've built something incredible here. We have a large number of Patrons of the Podcast who support this show each and every week. It's mind - blowing the amount of support this show gets. But it doesn't cover all of my expenses. And there's so much more I'd like to do to reach more Celtic music fans, which requires money. This would be one way to help us grow our podcast. So if you don't like those ads, please become a Patron of the Podcast, because they are not included in any of the Patreon shows. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! You are amazing. It is because of your generosity that you get to hear so much great Celtic music each and every week. Your kindness pays for our engineer, graphic designer, Celtic Music Magazine editor, promotion of the podcast, and allows me to buy the music I play here. It also pays for my time creating the show each and every week. As a patron, you get music - only episodes before regular listeners, vote in the Celtic Top 20, stand - alone stories, and you get a private feed to listen to the show. You get it all, without those ads at the beginning and end of the regular episodes. All that for as little as $1 per episode. A special thanks to our Celtic Legends: Bill Mandeville, Marti Meyers, Brenda, Karen DM Harris, Emma Bartholomew, Dan mcDade, Carol Baril, Miranda Nelson, Nancie Barnett, Kevin Long, Gary R Hook, Lynda MacNeil, Kelly Garrod, Annie Lorkowski, Shawn Cali HERE IS YOUR THREE STEP PLAN TO SUPPORT THE PODCAST Go to our Patreon page. Decide how much you want to pledge every week, $1, $5, $25. Make sure to cap how much you want to spend per month. TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. Learn more about the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ #celticmusic #irishmusic #celticmusicpodcast I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? Please email me. I'd love to see a picture of what you're doing while listening or of a band that you saw recently. Email me at follow@bestcelticmusic. Sherron Sloan emailed a photo from St Augustine Celtic Festival: "Marc, you've got to check out the St. Augustine Celtic festival sometime. That's where I first heard the Gothard sisters! It is such a fun weekend." Ryan Weyls emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I've attached photos from a pair of shows I went to this weekend: Dàimh at the Town Crier in Beacon, NY and Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones at the Rambling House in the Bronx. The lighting at Rambling House was a bit harsh and didn't agree with my phone, so I've only included two photos. Both bands sounded excellent. I might be checking out the other version of the Wolfe Tones (the one led by Derek's brother) later this week and will send photos if I make it. Thanks for your wonderful podcast. Tim Hughes emailed photos from the Madison WI Shamrock Shuffle: "Had to listen to I&CMP during the run! Before and after pictures."
