Kurt Taylor: Rebuilding Ridgevue Football Through Culture, Leadership, and Hard Work What does it actually take to build a winning football culture? In this episode of The Gametime Guru Podcast, Shane Larson sits down with Kurt Taylor, the head football coach at Ridgevue High School, for a powerful conversation about coaching, leadership, adversity, player development, community buy-in, and what it takes to build a football program the right way. Coach Taylor brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to Ridgevue football, and this episode goes far beyond the scoreboard. We talk about his football journey, growing up in Oregon, dealing with serious injuries as a high school athlete, the mental health challenges that came with losing the opportunity to play college football, and how coaching became the calling that helped shape his life. This conversation is especially valuable for athletes, parents, coaches, and leaders who want to understand what culture really means inside a program. Coach Taylor shares what it has been like stepping into the Ridgevue football program, how he is working to build trust with players, parents, coaches, and the North Nampa community, and why consistency matters when a program has gone through multiple coaching changes. One of the biggest themes in this episode is that culture is not just something you say. It is something you build every single day through standards, expectations, relationships, core values, and the experience players have inside the program. In this episode, we talk about: Kurt Taylor's football journey and how he fell in love with the game Growing up in Oregon and knowing early that he wanted to coach How injuries impacted his football dreams The mental health side of losing opportunities as an athlete Why hard work is the great equalizer How coaching became his calling What brought Coach Taylor from Oregon to Idaho Why Ridgevue football has a unique opportunity right now How to rebuild trust after multiple coaching changes What real football culture looks like Why parents, players, coaches, and community all matter How Ridgevue is building from the youth level up The importance of player leadership and leadership councils Ridgevue players to watch this season Why the weight room is the foundation of a successful football program Why Coach Taylor believes the power clean is one of the best lifts for football players What Ridgevue fans can expect from the program moving forward Coach Taylor also talks about the importance of developing young men beyond football. His goal is not just to build better athletes. It is to help players become better leaders, better teammates, and better people who can take the lessons from football into the rest of their lives. We also dive into the importance of the weight room, strength and conditioning, speed development, and mental toughness. Coach Taylor explains why the weight room is where athletes build more than strength. It is where they learn how to push through discomfort, respond to adversity, and build confidence that carries into the fourth quarter and beyond. Whether you are a Ridgevue football fan, a Treasure Valley sports fan, a high school athlete, a parent, a coach, or someone who loves conversations about leadership and sports, this episode gives a great look at what Coach Taylor and his staff are building at Ridgevue High School. What's the One Thing You Learned as a Kid That Still Saves You Today? Tricia's Friday Night Lights Obsession, Space Beer, and the Ticket Challenge Everyone's Talking About What's the one lesson you learned as a kid that you still use almost every day? That simple question sparks one of the funniest and most relatable conversations on this episode of The JB and Sandy Show, as Tricia proudly reveals the childhood phrase that continues to guide her through life: “Righty tighty, lefty loosey.” What follows is a hilarious discussion about bolts, tools, and whether the rule still works when you're upside down under a car. The laughs keep coming as JB returns to the studio feeling much better, and the crew dives into everything from Austin's scorching summer temperatures to the surprising story of a local brewery planning to make beer with yeast that has traveled to space. Is it innovation, curiosity, or proof that craft brewers are getting incredibly creative? The debate is on. Then, Tricia makes a shocking confession that has JB almost falling out of his chair: she's watching Friday Night Lights for the very first time. Hear her passionate reactions to the iconic Texas series, her growing attachment to the characters, and the moment she admits she's completely hooked. Her enthusiastic declaration, “I want to kiss Coach Taylor right on his mouth,” becomes one of the most unforgettable moments of the morning. The team also tackles a few surprising lifestyle headlines, including the food researchers say could help support heart health, and a new law bringing a little more fun to retirement communities. Plus, hear why traveling to an LSU football game might be one of the best sports experiences in America. And of course, the excitement ramps up with another round of JB and Sandy's Minute to Win It, where listeners compete for an incredible prize package of Ella Langley tickets. Between eager callers jumping the gun and the pressure-packed trivia challenge, the energy is nonstop. Whether you're here for the laughs, the Texas culture, the unexpected stories, or Tricia's latest TV obsession, this episode delivers plenty of memorable moments and conversations you'll be talking about long after it ends. Don't forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share the episode with a friend who loves great stories, big laughs, and authentic Texas mornings.

The Ultimate TV Dad Tier List & Debate! Welcome back to the Working Perspectives Podcast! This week, we are bringing our unique fatherhood experiences to the table to debate and rank some of television's most iconic fathers. Join the crew as we tackle fatherhood through three very different lenses: Matt brings the perspective of a married dad, balancing life, marriage, and raising a son and a daughter. Bern shares his real-world insights and experiences from the point of view of a divorced dad. Liam rounds out the discussion, giving us the unfiltered reality of being a single dad. In this episode, we are building a TV Dad Tier List. We selected three legendary television fathers to break down, rank, and fiercely debate: Coach Eric Taylor (Friday Night Lights) – Does the "clear eyes, full hearts" philosophy translate to S-Tier parenting? Phil Dunphy (Modern Family) – Is his signature "peerenting" style genius or a disaster waiting to happen? Peter Griffin (Family Guy) – Exactly how low on the tier list does Quahog's most chaotic dad belong? Watch as the guys argue their cases, defend their favorite TV dads, and try to come to an agreement on where these fictional fathers truly rank. Don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT, and SUBSCRIBE! Let us know in the comments: Where would YOU rank Coach Taylor, Phil Dunphy, and Peter Griffin? Who should we rank next?

I've become a better coach because I have the opportunity to work with these pro women and I'm excited to continue to get better, learn from them, and make sure that they're at the center of everything that I do. My guest for today's episode is Diljeet Taylor. We had her on the show last fall after she won the NCAA Cross Country Championships with her BYU women. For those of you who aren't familiar, she's one of the most transformative coaches in the sport. She's built BYU's women's cross country program and distance program into a national powerhouse, coaching NCAA champions, Olympians, and creating one of the strongest cultures in collegiate running. Now she's stepping into an even bigger role, leading a professional training group with Nike while continuing to coach at BYU. Nike has announced Swoosh TC for Oregon, Utah, and Arizona. It's being described by the brand as a network of elite athletes, coaches, and innovators working together to push the boundaries of performance and progress. Coach Taylor will oversee the Utah division, Jerry Schumacher will head Oregon along with Shalane Flanagan, and Mike Smith will lead the club in Arizona beginning in July 2025 in partnership from Rachel Smith. In this conversation, we make sense of what all of that means.  We get into the behind-the-scenes details of her new role, how she's balancing coaching, both collegiate and professional athletes, and what it takes to develop elite runners at the highest level. We also touch on the mindset of success, the importance of culture, and the transition from NCAA to professional racing. In this powerful episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, we dive into the core principle of resilience, with insights from national champion coach Diljeet Taylor. As the head coach of BYU’s cross-country teams, Coach Taylor recently led the women’s team to a National Championship. She shares her philosophy on resilience, explaining that true growth happens when athletes are willing to embrace the “dark place”—the discomfort and pain that comes with pushing beyond their limits. In this episode, we reflect on her message that resilience requires a decision to face hardship before it even comes. It’s about knowing that discomfort is inevitable in the pursuit of excellence, and instead of running from it, we must embrace it and keep moving forward. Coach Taylor’s insights not only apply to cross-country but to all sports and life challenges. Key Discussion Points: The concept of the “dark place” in sports and how to prepare for it mentally before facing challenges. The importance of embracing discomfort and how it leads to growth and success. How resilience can be built by committing to the process, even when it’s tough. Real-life examples of how athletes can push through adversity, whether in sports or in life. The role of having a clear why to motivate you through the tough times. Whether you’re an athlete facing tough competition or someone working toward personal growth, this episode will inspire you to push through challenges, keep your focus, and embrace the discomfort that leads to resilience and long-term success. “The pieces were there – but getting them to mesh and come together, we had to embrace the imperfect. We had to have these women realize that if you're scared of something, the only way to get over that fear is to conquer it. That was what this championship was for a lot of the women.  My guest for today's episode is Diljeet Taylor, Head Coach of BYU's women's cross country and track team. She's one of the most inspiring leaders in the sport. Coach Taylor just wrapped up a storybook season by guiding BYU to the 2024 NCAA Cross Country women's team title. It's their second national championship under her leadership and the program's sixth overall. This victory wasn't just about redemption. It was about resilience one year after a devastating 14th place finish at NCAAs – the lowest moment of her coaching career. Coach Taylor and her team embraced the imperfect, leaned into their depth, and executed when it mattered most. From butterfly mantras to pajama parties to brilliant race strategies, Coach Taylor proved that with belief and preparation, anything is possible. In today's conversation, we talked about BYU's incredible turnaround, her approach to coaching All-Americans and building a winning culture, and why this year was a testament to her mantra, ‘Embrace the imperfect.' “The expectation was we want to chase this and put her on the line in a way to be able to compete. Physically, I think things went really smooth. This is probably the best build she's had in the eight years I've coached her. Mentally, it probably wasn't the best build. There were some battles that she faced and the race never tells the whole story. Being someone that saw what she overcame to make this team is what I think is going to make this one really special.”  Newly minted Olympian Courtney Wayment and Coach Diljeet Taylor join us live in Eugene after Courtney finished runner-up in the U.S. Olympic Trials steeplechase. Coach Taylor shares about Courtney's ability to overcome challenges as she worked towards the Trials and what it's been like coaching Courtney for the past eight years. Courtney shares about having “the best support system in the world” at BYU with past and present teammates, her training partners, and family. She also shares about her progression over the past few years that's helped her rise to the world-class athlete that she's become. Derrick Henry's Future In The NFL + How Close He Was To Being Traded

In this week's episode we sit down with not only one of the boys but also the King, Derrick Henry. Derrick and the Titans just finished up their season and there are a lot of question marks surrounding Derrick's future with the team. So where else would he want to talk about his future than with the boys. Derrick and the guys first get into a lot of reminiscing from the last couple years on the team including times from Will was on the team. They talk about their run's that they had in 2019 and 2020. The game they had in Baltimore and how wild the atmosphere was, the game they had in Kansas City where Mahomes had that crazy run going into halftime. Some of the stories that the guys tell really just give you that vibe of a couple of old guys just reflecting on the good ole days. Following the reflection period, Will and Taylor ask him the question that everybody wants to know, what does the future look like for Derrick Henry? Derrick doesn't necessarily have an answer for that question. The biggest thing he was harping on was that he wants to win a Super Bowl and he isn't sure if that's a possibility with Tennessee. Derrick also gives us a glimpse into the crazy time period when everyone thought he was going to get traded. Overall, it's a great convo with a lot of reflection on some good times as well as looking to the times ahead.
