E26: Tyler Myers of the Winnipeg Jets; Art Middleton of JetsNation.ca

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2017 32:14

On episode 26, host Dave Cunning welcomes two guests -- first, Winnipeg Jets defenceman, Tyler Myers. After playing only eleven games and missing 71 in the 2016-17 NHL season due to injury, the former Calder Trophy Winner is primed to rebound from nagging core muscle, hip, and groin injuries that were surgically repaired and kept him out most of last year, and help Winnipeg return to the playoffs. Far more pertinent than mending his personal ailments though, was dealing with the complications of his son’s birth at the beginning of this year. Myers’ wife Michela, delivered their now seven-month old son Tristan in January via emergency C-section in January. He was born five weeks early, and without 80% of his blood as a result of a fetal maternal hemorrhage. Later, he would also suffer through a pulmonary hemorrhage, seizures, and a stroke. Hear Myers comment on the health of himself and his son, as well as the Jets' off-season acquistions, what it's like to play in front of Winnipeg fans, and more.  Later, Art Middleton of JetsNation.ca calls in to debrief Myers' comments, plus add his own predictions and prognostications on how Winnipeg's 2017-18 season will unfold, suggests what might happen if the Jets do not make the playoffs for a third straight year, and sets the Winnipeg hockey history timeline straight. On episode 25, host Dave Cunning had the incredible honor to interview one of pro wrestling’s all-time greats, the Hardcore legend, Mick Foley. The WWE Hall of Famer chatted about his books, his career roles –spanning from multiple wrestling characters to author, activist, storyteller, Santa Claus, and others; his Wrestlemania 32 appearance and Shane McMahon’s leap off the Hell in the Cell ala Foley’s crash landing off that same structure in 1998; his dramatic weight loss thanks to DDP Yoga; the movie Beyond the Mat; Holy Foley; and his daughter Noelle’s foray into pro wrestling.  Foley also spoke about Invasion Championship Wrestling, whom the Hardcore Legend will be appearing on shows for May 6 in Kelowna, BC  and May 7th in Vernon, BC. ICW runs wrestling events to raise money for local charities, something that Foley, an advocate for RAINN, autism awareness, and other causes was happy to help support. E24: "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart

In episode 24, Dave sits down with one of the greatest managers in the history of professional wrestling, “The Mouth of the South”, Jimmy Hart. The 71 year old veteran of more than 30 years in the wrestling business has managed more than 50 singles wrestlers, with names like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Sting topping the list. Jimmy is perhaps even better known for managing some of wrestling’s all-time best tag teams to greatness, such as the Hart Foundation, Money Inc, the Nasty Boys, the Mega Powers, the Natural Disasters. Between tag teams and singles, Hart’s clients won every title there was to win in WWE during Hart’s tenure in the company. Jimmy has kind enough to talk to me at length about all sorts of things from his years in the wrestling business -- what he learned from Dick Clark while on tour with his band The Gentry’s with the Beach Boys and Sonny & Cher, Stephenwolf, The Monkees, and his transition from the music business to wrestling thanks to Jerry Lawler; the birth of his “Mouth of the South” moniker through brushings with Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman;the origins of his trademark megaphone and jackets, and who paints them for him; his new beach bar, “Jimmy Hart’s Beach Bar & Grill”, opening in Daytona Beach Florida in 2016; trading WWE memorabilia for NHL memorabilia with NHL team equipment managers during wrestling tours; is days managing the Hart Foundation, and even gives a Stu Hart impression; his departure to WCW and his roles while there; his role in the development of TNA and relationship with the Jarrett's; his experience on the reality show “Legends House”, his opinion of Vince McMahon and his WWE Network and XFL ventures; and Jimmy also shares some stories about Andre the Giant, Roddy Piper, and an absolutely crazy one about being held up at gunpoint by an escaped convict at a gas station that led to the theft of the Ultimate Warrior’s car, and a high speed chase that ended in a gunfight with police. Be sure to stick with us to the end of the show to hear that one, you don’t want to miss it.This interview was made possible by Invasion Championship Wrestling, an independent wrestling company in British Columbia, Canada, and many thanks to them for making it possible. ICW has put on 5 Kelowna Invasion events since 2013, raising tens of thousands of dollars for local charities in the process. Thanks to ICW co-founder Mike Chisolm, I was able to sit down and chat with WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Hart just prior to their most recent event in October 2015. On episode 22 of the show, I chat via Skype with the co-writers and director of the new independent movie, “One Rep Max”, Rob Stimpson and Terry Erickson. “One Rep Max” was filmed in Jeju, South Korea where I and they lived for three years. Rob plays Tristan Wood, and I appear as Simon Fitzhubbins. The movie cast all local Jeju residents, and features music composed by a local Jeju musician. And if you watch the movie, you’ll even notice a nod or two to some local Jeju groups like the Jeju Islanders hockey club, Jejuventus soccer, and others. The movie is filmed mockumentary-style, and follows 4 fitness contest hopefuls while they prepare to compete in a local 1RM deadlift showdown, for completely different reasons. The movie was years in the making, and took much longer to complete than expected thanks to some technical glitches which required reshooting and recasting – but has finally surfaced to see the light of day – or the light of your computer screen via YouTube, that is.Click here to watch "One Rep Max"Follow us on Twitter @davecunning, @RobertStimpson, @TerryErickson, and the show @XPPSP. On the 21st episode of the show, Ryan Johnsen of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets calls in. Johansen, who will turn 23 this summer, was drafted 4th overall in 2010 by Columbus, and just completed his 4th season with the club, and It was arguably his best yet. He hit career highs in assists, points, and short-handed goals, and was also not only elected to the NHL All-Star game, but voted the game’s MVP to boot.  We talk about his pseudo “feud” with his brother Lucas, as Ryan’s alumni WHL team the Portland Winterhawks was amidst a battle with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL’s western conference final earlier in May, which ultimately was won by Kelowna, who also went on to sweep the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL final, and are now competing in the 2015 Memorial Cup tournament in Quebec. We talk about how Ryan is using his experience in climbing the hockey ranks to the NHL to show his brother the way there, but at the same time how Lucas is committed to getting there on his own accord. We also discussed his decision making process of declining of a full-ride NCAA scholarship to play in the WHL en route to the NHL, the taxing nature of 82 NHL games on the body and what he does in the off-season to recuperate. Ryan and Lucas’ brotherly dynamic was featured in an article I wrote for the Kelowna Daily Courier on May 4, which includes quotes from Lucas. If you’re interested in reading that, click here to read the story. We also brought up the Blue Jackets’ frustrating, injury prone season and how frustrating that was to go through in the Blue Jackets’ dressing room, how it’s been for Ryan to play in the city of Columbus through his career, how he’s come to eclipse former Blue Jackets stars like Rick Nash, Jeff Carter, and Marian Gaborik, his thoughts on team veterans like newly named captain Nick Foligno and others that have helped show him the ropes in the league,  and the direction the John Davidson and company now have the franchise steered in. To round out the conversation, we also discussed the IIHF World Championship tournament, why many NHL players decline it each year, why he declined his invitation this year, and whether he’d play next year if Columbus finds themselves out of the playoffs or eliminated early next season.Follow Ryan Johansen, host Dave Cunning, and XP PSP on Twitter.
