Welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, where we share inspiring stories, practical tips, and the unpredictable nature of life on the water. In this episode, hosted by Bela Musits and co-hosted by Mike Wasserman, we dive into the adventurous journey of Mike Malekoff as he recounts his trip from Georgia to the Florida Keys. This podcast captures the essence of his experience, highlighting the importance of flexibility, planning, and embracing the unexpected.### The Journey Begins: From Vermont to the Florida KeysMike Malekoff's journey started long before he set sail for the Florida Keys. After sailing from Vermont to the Bahamas and eventually settling in Georgia, Mike planned a celebratory trip to the Keys following his recovery from prostate cancer. The trip was meticulously scheduled for early January, with reservations in the Keys for February and a planned return to Georgia afterward.### The Challenges of Scheduling and WeatherOne of the biggest takeaways from Mike's experience is the challenge of adhering to schedules while cruising on a sailboat. Despite careful planning, the unpredictable nature of weather and other unforeseen circumstances can significantly impact the journey. Mike's trip, which began on January 10th, was planned to be a 10-day voyage with a 10-day buffer. However, cold weather, snow in Georgia and Florida, and strong winds delayed their departure and reduced their buffer days.### Navigating the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)To avoid rough seas, Mike and his crew traveled the ICW to St. Augustine, which took longer than expected. They encountered a supermoon that affected tides and caused shallow areas, leading to additional stops to avoid grounding. The journey continued to New Smyrna, where they faced a leaking head and had to manage with their second head.### Mechanical Issues and Weather DelaysMechanical issues further complicated the trip. In Titusville, a water connection snapped off, leaving them without a working bathroom. Finding parts for a 2005 boat proved difficult, and they spent days waiting for replacements, which eliminated their buffer time. Bad weather and northerly winds affecting offshore currents forced them to wait for calmer seas.### The Decision to ReturnRealizing that crossing to the Keys would be difficult and facing expensive marina reservations, Mike decided to cancel the trip and return to Georgia. The journey back was not without its challenges, including sea fog and rough seas, but they navigated safely using a chart plotter and compass.### Lessons Learned: Flexibility and AttitudeMike's trip, described as an adventure rather than a vacation, underscores the importance of flexibility and a positive attitude in sailing. Despite the hurdles, there were enjoyable moments, such as watching a rocket launch in Titusville and surfing alongside dolphins. The experience highlighted the need for backup plans, the challenges of securing marina reservations, and the unpredictability of buffer days.### Embracing the JourneyThe podcast emphasizes that the journey itself is the reward, and focusing solely on the destination can turn an adventure into an ordeal. Experienced sailors understand the challenges and setbacks, while new sailors should be prepared for the unexpected. The importance of planning with flexibility, carrying spare parts, and enjoying the journey cannot be overstated.Thank you for joining us on this episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States. We hope you found Mike's story inspiring and informative. If you have any questions or would like to share your own sailing experiences, please email us at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. Don't forget to share the podcast and stay tuned for more exciting episodes as we prepare for spring boating.Happy sailing!Bela and Mike

David Loseby, Visiting Professor of Research Impact at Leeds University Business School, interviews Frank Lee, Chief Executive Officer at the Institute for Collaborative Working, asking what makes a great partner, and how value can be created through collaboration. Both David and Frank spoke at the “Ideas in Practice: Supply Chain Summit 2024”, which was co-hosted by Leeds University Business School and the Institute for Collaborative Working. The event, held in November 2024, explored how managing complex supply chains is increasingly vital to all organisations. Additional note: In the episode, David and Frank mention ISO 44000 and ISO 44001. These are standards, created by the International Organization for Standardization, that provide frameworks for successful collaborative business relationship management. This episode was recorded on 3rd February 2025. If you would like to get in touch regarding this episode, please contact research.lubs@leeds.ac.uk. A transcript of this episode is available. About the speakers: David Loseby is Professor of Research Impact in Supply Chain Management at Leeds University Business School. Garvin takes on Bob Orton in an ICW match from 1982 with some of the worst commentary (including the pod return of Leaping Lanny Poffo) you will ever hear with an audience of 15 watching! Before we start, an apology for no podcasts during or after the Tragos/Thesz Hall of Fame a few weeks ago. During the travel to the event, we had some weather-related issues at home that necessitated putting any recording plans on hold. But we are now back, although we were it were under better circumstances. We're very grateful to Mike Sempervive (@sempervive) to take some time to discuss the recent passing of the great Kevin Sullivan at age 74. There's no rhyme nor reason for how we talk about the great man's career: We go from Florida to Knoxville (all six more or times he worked there) to WCW to ICW to Hawaii and all points along the way. We discuss our favorite angles, try to place the Prince of Darkness gimmick in historical context, our favorite angles and promos, including The Dream Mike Davis, the Slaughterhouse, the Varsity Club, the third Head Hunter, the Sheik, Mark Lewin, King Curtis and so much more. It's great when Mike has time to fit us in. If we had him on more often, maybe the shows wouldn't be as long, but the winding road takes us to where we want to be, in the end.

Author Jon Finkel interviewed a couple hundred people in order to write his new book, “Macho Man: Dig It! The Untamed, Unbelievable Life of Randy Savage.” And of course that included Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo! Jon recounts how he tracked down Lanny, the first conversation they had, and subsequent hours they spent speaking about Randy before Lanny's passing in February of 2023. Jon has stories about Randy's childhood, his journey to become a professional baseball player, the circumstances that led to the launch of his pro wrestling career, and what it was like for Randy and Lanny to work and train under their pro wrestler father, Angelo Poffo as part of the family's ICW promotion. He has details about the Poffo family's time working for Jerry Lawler in Memphis, Randy's early days at WCW, his feud with Hulk Hogan, his Wrestlemania match against Ricky Steamboat, his WWE days with Vince McMahon, and his real-life love story with Miss Elizabeth. Jon also talks about Randy's untimely death, and the touching memorial that lives on at the site of his tragic car accident.
