On this week's installment of Vinyl Fridays Brandon and AP Lindsay welcome back two of their favorite guest DJs Ali Jacobson and Jen Sabella , the Sonny & Cher of DJ'ing duos. It was a pleasure talking to them about Wisconsin super clubs, relish trays and of course, Joe Jackson. How can you have a podcast and not talk about Joe Jackson? And of course, they bring another amazing selection of records from both local and international musicians that you won't want to miss. And of course, Brandon plays some dusty old nonsense as well. --------------------------------------------------------- Vinyl Fridays theme song by Dazzleflage Bed music: Apache by Jorgan Ingmann Apache The Incredible Bongo Band Biradio.libsyn.com Instagram: @birp60406 Facebook: @blueislandradio If you'd like to support the show visit Patreon.com/blueislandradio
Epidode 311: When I met lifelong musician Red Young on board Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches Cruise, I knew I had to interview him. He's had one of those journeyman's careers that ties together all the threads of American music, from pop to R&B to jazz. He's a pianist, Hammond organ specialist, singer, arranger and producer, and at 76 years old, he's seen it all. He's worked with Kinky Friedman, Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton, Sonny & Cher, Linda Ronstadt, Eric Burdon of the Animals, Marcia Ball, Janiva Magness, and of course Delbert McClinton himself, whom he met in his home town of Fort Worth, TX some sixty years ago. Sit back and enjoy the stories.

Pete Townshend intended the fifth studio album from The Who to be a science fiction rock opera called “Lifehouse,” as a follow up to the rock opera “Tommy” released in 1969. After conflicts with their band manager and issues just managing the complexity of what Townshend envisioned the project to be, the rock opera was shelved, and the follow-up was made into a more traditional album entitled Who's Next. The group began recording the album at Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger's house, using the Stones' mobile recording studio, then moved to a more traditional studio in London. Most of the album is made up of songs originally intended for the Lifehouse project. Who's Next would see the Who make significant use of synthesizers and other keyboard sounds on this album, making the synthesizers a more integrated part of the songs than on previous albums. Drummer Keith Moon's style was also more formalized than before, and the overall album was focused on a good sound where previous albums were perhaps tilted toward a sonic projection of the image of the band.Who's Next would contain some of the most iconic songs that the band produced, and retrospectively is considered by many to be the best album The Who ever produced. The album would reach number 1 on the UK charts, and number 4 on the US charts.Rob brings us this iconic album for today's podcast, and friend of the show Mike Fernandes sits in for Bruce this week.MobileThis lighter song is a celebration of life on the open road. Roger Daltrey steps aside as Pete Townshend takes over lead vocal duties. Daltrey actually was not present at the recording of this song, leaving Keith Moon (drums), John Entwistle (bass), and Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards) to record it as a power trio.A BargainOften misconstrued as a love song to a woman, this track actually is about a relationship with God. It contends that sacrificing everything for a relationship with God is not a sacrifice at all, but a bargain. Much of Pete Townshend's work is inspired by eastern mysticism.Won't Get Fooled AgainThe last track on the album is an 8 1/2-minute epic. It was originally intended as a closing number to the "Lifehouse" rock opera. The lyrics offer a critique of both government and revolutionary change, summarized in the phrase "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Townshend was inspired to write this song after chasing Abbie Hoffman off the stage at Woodstock.Baba O'Riley The title of the lead track to the album is a combination of two of Townshend's mentors, Indian spiritualist Meher Baba and American Composer Terry Riley. The repeated phrase "teenage wasteland" was inspired by Townshend's observations of youths at Woodstock strung out on acid. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Beat Goes On by Sonny & Cher (from the television variety show “Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour”)The singing duo Sonny and Cher started this sketch comedy and music show in 1971. It would run for 3 years until their divorce. STAFF PICKS:Sweet City Woman by The StampedersWayne brings us a banjo-laden hit from a Canadian trio. The lyrics were inspired by an encounter with a girl with wild eyes who came from the prairie to start life in the big city. It hit number 8 on the US charts and number 1 in Canada. It also won a number of Juno awards in 1972. You may remember it from an episode of "Better Call Saul."Take Me Home, Country Roads by John DenverLynch keeps the banjo hits coming with a signature song from John Denver. It went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and would become one of four official state songs for West Virginia. Denver recorded this song in only two hours.Nobody by the Doobie Brothers Mike brings us a lost song from the first album by the Doobie Brothers. Neither this song nor the album charted when it was released, but it displays a number of riffs and styles which would become staples of Doobie Brothers songs. It was re-released in 1974 after the group had achieved success, and it reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100.Maggie May by Rod Stewart Rob closes out the staff picks with a hit single off Stewart's third solo album "Every Picture Tells a Story." The lyrics describe the contradictory feelings of a boy in a relationship with an older woman. The inspiration was a true encounter Stewart had with a woman at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival. The song went to number 1 in Australia, the US, the UK, and Canada. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Orchid by Black SabbathWe close out with a surprisingly soft instrumental from an ordinarily more heavy hitting band. Sixty years ago this summer, Ironton, Ohio, native son Bobby Bare started work on his debut album for RCA Victor. The LP's title track — “500 Miles Away from Home” — would turn out to be one of the best-selling singles in the 88-year-old Bare's long career.Composition of the song is generally credited to folksinger Hedy West, who is said to have put it together from fragments of a melody she heard her uncle sing to her back in her native Georgia. One of Hedy's influences was a traditional tune called “Railroaders' Lament.”In 1961 West copyrighted the song, which many of us first heard the following year as the second track on Peter, Paul and Mary's wildly popular self-titled debut album for Warner Brothers.Enter Bobby BareIn 1953, an 18-year-old Bobby Bare left Ohio, getting a ride to California and playing music along the way to earn tips to help pay for the gas. In Los Angeles, Bobby struggled to break into country music or rock and roll as a performer and/or songwriter. He had little luck with his recordings, finding more success playing in nightclubs, until he was drafted into the Army in 1959.After his military service, Bare's big break came in 1962 when Chet Atkins signed him to record country music for RCA. His first single for the label was 1962's "Shame On Me,” followed by the Dennis Dill/Mel Tillis composition, “Detroit City,” which charted and won him a Grammy for best country & western recording of the year.It was after that Grammy that Bare recorded his 500 Miles Away from Home album. For the title track, Bare and his friend Charlie Williams wrote new lyrics to the melody that he characterized as “an old campfire song.” Years later, talking with interviewer Gary James, Bare remembered creating his version when he was living in North Hollywood down the street from Glen Campbell, his sometimes drinking buddy.“I was driving back from San Diego one night,” Bare told James, “and I was surfin' the radio and I heard Peter, Paul And Mary singing the old campfire version of ‘500 Miles' and I thought, boy, that's great! “Soon as I got home I got Glen's album and it was an instrumental. There were no lyrics. I called Charlie Williams up. I said, ‘Hey Charlie, come over and let's write some lyrics to this.'”“500 Miles” put Bobby Bare firmly on the musical map. His version became a Top 10 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, as well as a Top 5 hit on both the Country and Adult Contemporary charts. The Song's Incredible Legs“500 Miles” has been extraordinarily popular with singers all around the world. In America, it was covered by everyone from the Kingston Trio and the Country Gentlemen to Sonny & Cher, the Brothers Four and Elvis to Reba McEntire, Jackie DeShannon and Johnny Rivers.Beyond these shores, versions of “500 Miles” have been recorded in Albanian, Assamese, Bengali, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, French, Germany, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Slovenian, Spanish and Vietnamese. Whew! Our Take on the TuneWhen we play our monthly gig at Sal's Speakeasy in Ashland, Ky., we often like to have a salute to local folks who've made it big in music. For instance, we regularly perform “When You Say Nothing at All,” the song generally associated with Kentucky's late Keith Whitley. At our next show, we intend to offer “500 Miles” as a tribute to Bobby Bare and to all our Ironton, Ohio, friends.Incidentally, “500 Miles” also has a tiny West Virginia connection too. Composer Hedy West was the daughter of Don West, Georgia poet and coal mine labor organizer of the 1930s.Don co-founded the famed Highlander Folk School in New Market, TN, and later ran the Appalachian South Folklife Center in Pipestem in West Virginia's Summers County. Don died in Charleston, WV, in 1992 at age 86. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com

Denny Tedesco has begun on the feature film documentary Immediate Family, director Denny Tedesco's follow-up to his award-winning music documentary The Wrecking Crew, which chronicled the most iconic session musicians of the 60s, playing with virtually every major American artist of the era including The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Sonny & Cher and others. Immediate Family picks up where The Wrecking Crew left off, with Tedesco turning the lens toward another group of recording studio pros who first came to prominence in the early 1970s and still work constantly to this day: Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, Waddy Wachtel, and a handful of others. Kortchmar, Sklar and Kunkel made up three-quarters of The Section, best known for both their studio and live work in support of some of the top selling singer/songwriters and solo singers in the history of music, as well as their own acclaimed instrumental albums. (They were later joined by Wachtel). Collectively, The Section helped define the sound of a generation by supporting the top singer-songwriters of the last five decades: James Taylor, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Keith Richards, Neil Young, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Stevie Nicks, Bryan Ferry, Lyle Lovett and Jimmy Buffett, and producers Lou Adler and Peter Asher – many of whom have already been filmed for the doc. In this illuminating documentary, many of these super-star artists reflect on their relationships and deep history with these legendary players, sharing why they've trusted them to shape their sound, and in many cases, extended their roles to include writing, co-writing and music producing. However, Immediate Family is not a nostalgia piece. Unlike other eras, where players fell out of fashion, this particular crew never did; their phones still ring with artists and producers looking for a piece of the magic they've come to expect from players five decades in as hit makers. But what really separates their story from the pack is their close friendships; tight bonds further bolstered by shared performances on massively influential, modern classics. In recent years, Kortchmar, Sklar, Kunkel and Wachtel have again teamed up, joined by guitarist Steve Postell (David Crosby, John Oates), to perform on stage and record as The Immediate Family. Kortchmar quips, “We're like a cover band that plays all originals,” referring to the band's repertoire of hits they either wrote or co-wrote for artists like Jackson Browne (“Tender is the Night” and “Somebody's Baby”), James Taylor (“Honey Don't Leave L.A.”), Don Henley (“Dirty Laundry” and “All She Wants to Do is Dance”), Warren Zevon (“Werewolves of London” and “Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead”), as well as a slew of others. The most exciting segments of the documentary may be the tales told by the session aces themselves, who have moved forward for so long by rarely looking back on their storied careers, but now can reflect on the major impact they've had on contemporary music. As James Taylor said to the doc's director Denny Tedesco at the end of his interview, as mics were being taken off, “This is a great thing that you're doing. It's so interesting.”

On January 5, 1998, Congressman Sonny Bono died, after crashing head-first into a tree on a family skiing vacation. Born in Detroit to Italian parents, Sonny was the visionary behind the iconic pop duo & Tv stars, Sonny & Cher. After an acrimonious split from Cher, Sonny, a born risk-taker, never looked back. He went from bit-part actor, to restaurateur, to Mayor of Palm Springs and eventually a highly-regarded Republican Congressman. There were no witnesses to Sonny's fatal accident, so in this episode, world-renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Hunter uses Death Investigation reports alongside first-hand accounts of Sonny's life to discover what may have caused the 62-year-old expert skier to lose control and crash.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Eden Alpert, daughter of the legendary Herb Alpert. Now, if you think you know Herb Alpert, I'm here to tell you, you really don't. Sure you know him from his iconic hits in the 1960s “The Lonely Bull,” “A Taste of Honey” and “Tijuana Taxi” and many others. But did you know he sold more albums than The Beatles in 1966? Or that he had five albums simultaneously in the Top 20 on the Billboard charts which has never happened before or since? That he's won nine Grammy awards and that he's the A in A&M Records? You want more? He's also a sculptor whose Black Spirit Totems are world renown. He's also an abstract expressionist painter whose works have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the US, Europe and Asia. What's more, he's a philanthropist and his Herb Alpert Foundation has funded programs as diverse as the Harlem School of the Arts, Homeboy Industries, The Soldiers Project and Vista Del Mar Family & Child Services which is the home to The Eden Alpert Therapeutic Music Program. We talk to Eden today about The Herb Alpert Vibrato Grill, a supper club/jazz club she runs expertly due to her outgoing personality, her youth spent in schools with the children of Sonny & Cher, Shirley Jones, Jack Lemmon and Elliot Gould & Barbra Streisand as well as getting a phone call on her 13th birthday from Peter Frampton because….well, he was on A&M Records. Those are the perks of being the child of a celebrity. And this is Rarified Heir.
The Sojourners were an El Paso, Texas folk-rock band consisting of Ron and Sue Gorton, Randy Jones, Kenny Smith and Bert Peters. Several other players including Richard Chorne, Richard 'Herman Glopp' Starnes, and several drummers had some play time with the group through the years. The group was known for their unique sound of covering groups like Buffalo Springfield, Sonny & Cher and other popular cross-over bands of the late '60's and early '70's. The group recorded two 45's (1969) at the Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, N.M. Sun Summer Days, written by band member Randy Jones, received regional charting on several radio stations including KINT and KELP in El Paso. #thesojourners

Making a Scene Present an Interview with Carmine AppiceAs drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Cactus,Tightrope,TightropeCactus,Headed For A Fall,Tightropemakingascene,Carmine Appice,Cactus,Papa Was A Rolling Stone,TightropeCactus,"Suite 1 & 2: Everlong, All The Madmen",Tightrope

Hello Friends! Jumping right off of last week's look at British Beat from the 60s, this week we're taking a look at a little spread of pop straight out of the United States of America. From Wall-of-Sound Pop from The Ronettes and Sonny & Cher, Sunshine pop from The Turtles, Boyce & Hart, The Monkees, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys, and Margo Guryan, to downright rave-ups from Nancy Sinatra and Simon & Garfunkel, we've travelled right across the sonic palette of popular music in the middle of the greatest decade for it. We've also taken three further rave-ups from The Outsiders' 3rd LP, 'IN', released in January 1967 on Capitol - and unreleased outside of the USA! You can't get more American than that! **Please be aware I incorrectly noted ‘Someone I Know’ as sampling Beethoven, when in fact Bach is the artist you’re looking for. Even aside from the roller coasters at Indiana Beach, the ups and downs have been dizzying at the iconic tourist attraction on the shores of Lake Shafer at the Hoosier town of Monticello. The heyday of the beach, boardwalk, amusement center, arcade and ballroom - where the Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher and Janis Joplin performed - lasted for decades after the park opened during the 1920s. After a series of ownership changes, Indiana Beach has been continually in the news this year: In February came the stunning announcement that it would close after 94 colorful years. That was followed by another ownership change, which paved the way for the reopening of Indiana Beach earlier this month. Hoosier History Live will explore the history that began in 1926, when founder Earl Spackman created a summer getaway then known as Ideal Beach, which initially was just a sandy stretch of lakeshore and a refreshment stand that he built with two-by-fours. By the Big Band era of the 1940s, the ballroom had become a venue for such musical headliners as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Fireworks, water skiing demonstrations, a Ferris wheel and other attractions ensued. Nelson will be joined by two guests, both of whom live in Monticello: Joy Spackman Bailey, the granddaughter of founder Earl Spackman, who began working at Indiana Beach as a teenager checking coats in the ballroom and helping at a soda fountain. Also during the 1950s, when the attraction was owned by her father, Tom Spackman, Joy participated in water skiing demonstrations on the lake that captivated hundreds of spectators. Later, she was a teacher at various local schools. She also is an artist and past president of the White County Historical Society. And author W.C. Madden, known as Bill, who is the editor of Monticello Magazine, a quarterly. He has written more than 40 books, including the newly released History of Twin Lakes (Shafer & Freeman Publishing) which includes a chapter about Indiana Beach, and Indiana Beach: A Fun-Filled History (Arcadia Publishing, 2013). The path forward for Indiana Beach became rocky after the Spackman family sold it in 2008. Non-local, corporate ownership ensued, with much higher admission prices. California-based Apex Parks Group bought Indiana Beach in 2015, by which point many of the amusement park rides were deteriorating, according to news accounts. The announcement in February that Apex was closing the park - followed by news that Apex was filing for bankruptcy - made the front pages of newspapers across Indiana. So did the unexpected news that Chicago-based businessman Gene Staples had purchased and would reopen Indiana Beach. The White County Commission and the White County Council offered $3 million in financial incentives to attract a new owner, according to news accounts. Younger generations often are surprised to learn that Indiana Beach ever attracted top entertainers like Peter, Paul and Mary, the Who, Janis Joplin and the Beach Boys, who drew thousands of concert goers during the 1960s. "Long-time owner Tom Spackman hired booking agents to bring in top acts," the Lafayette Courier-Journal wrote in a 2011 retrospective of the performers, described by the newspaper as a who's who of future Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees. "The Monticello stop was usually sandwiched between gigs in Chicago and Indianapolis." But it's not only the celebrities that stand out in the memory of our guest, Joy Spackman Bailey. She reflects back on her unusual childhood: "Imagine growing up amid roller coasters, carousels and cotton candy. My brothers and I would ride our bikes up and down the boardwalk, playing tag and hide-and-seek . . . I'm not alone in feeling that there was magic in the air those summers I spent at the park." But there also were challenges, almost from the beginning. In late May 1930, hours before a pavilion at Indiana Beach - then still known as Ideal Beach - was set to host its first band and dance, a devastating fire swept through the entertainment center, completely destroying it. Owner Earl Spackman vowed to reopen after the disaster, and according to our guest W.C. Madden, his workers were able to have a pavilion ready in just a few weeks, enabling a July 4 gala. The park was renamed Indiana Beach in the 1950s by Tom Spackman. His daughter, our guest Joy, notes that Louis Armstrong entertained crowds there five times between 1955 and 1962. Other favorite performers included Vaughn Monroe, Brenda Lee, the Four Seasons and the Kingston Trio. Eventually, though, the focus at Indiana Beach shifted from dance halls, concerts, swimming and sunbathing to the amusement park rides, which included a roller coaster called the Hoosier Hurricane. For decades, Indiana Beach was known for its TV commercials that proclaimed: "There's more than corn in Indiana." The ownership changes in recent years, along with steeper daily admission prices and what many White County residents felt was a lack of creativity and vision, were disheartening. An Indianapolis Monthly magazine article summarizes the advice for new owner Staples: "Repair the relationship with the local community." After the shock of the closing announcement, the recent reopening has made Joy Spackman Bailey optimistic. "We are so thankful to see the park up and running again," she says. "Things can only get better."
Through the years, the music industry has produced some pretty infamous couples: Sonny & Cher, Sid & Nancy, J.Lo & Puff Daddy, and of course Kurt & Courtney, whose tragic demise would ROCK the world (get it, guys? Because they were rockers in rock bands. Nirvana and Hole. Rockers…rocking the world). When Kurt Cobain was found dead with a bullet wound to the head on April 8th, 1994, many believed that Kurt had succumbed to the demons of his depression and heroin abuse by taking his own life. However, when a limp-dick BBC reporter starts poking around the mean streets of Washington looking for answers surrounding Kurt’s death, he uncovers a widespread hatred for his wife, Courtney and is compelled to get everyone in the world who ever met her to talk as much shit about her on camera as possible (journalism!) This week, Jen & Danielle do their best to stay on topic despite extensive sidebars on krautrock, Dave Grohl’s likability, the differences between a shock JOCK and a shock ROCKer, and generally just fucking hating this stupid movie. If you want to hear their extensive, long-winded opinions on a topic they couldn’t really care less about, and maybe even have a bunch of LOLs along the way, tune all the way in!
Today's program features tuneage from (not in order of appearance) Vanilla Fudge, Alan Parsons Project, Gino Vanelli, Crowded House, The Mark Almond Band, Earth Wind & Fire, Youngbloods, Deep Purple, Todd Rundgren, Hall & Oates, Melanie, Cream, Graham Nash, Beatles, Genesis, Phoebe Snow, Yes, Sonny & Cher, Paul & Linda McCartney and Mamas & Papas. For Dessert we have a brand new single from Victoria Scott & Alfonso Rodenas aka The Blue Dolphins.
Welcome to today’s show! WHAT WE’LL LEARN: The magnificent plot: Phil Connors (aka Bill Murray) begins by asking two strangers, “What would you do if every day was the same and you were stuck in one place and nothing you did mattered.” Learn why Adina loves this movie and its relevance in the recovery space Why Phil wakes up to Sonny & Cher’s alarm “I’ve Got You Babe.” What is Phil’s process for figuring out what is going on and why he is stuck-he starts with the pleasure phase and then goes through a dark period Things really start to change for Phil Connors once he realizes the human suffering around him What Adina thinks is the most beautiful part of the movie Adina shares an example from her own life on how she gets through the boredom and the mundane What Adina learned watching it now vs. when she first saw it in her teenage years The questions that started this podcast and how the movie in a very real way “answers” these questions RESOURCES MENTIONED A.I.R. This week, Car Con Carne goes on location for a backstage interview with the core of Beasto Blanco: Alice Cooper's daughter Calico and Alice's phenomenal bass player Chuck Garric. We talk about Beasto Blanco, as well as the mighty Alice Cooper (who was amazing as always at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre). Discussed this week: Is it important for Beasto Blanco to not sound like Alice Cooper? The vocal interplay between Calico and Chuck is one of the things that makes Beasto Blanco great. Beasto Blanco is just like Sonny & Cher. Calico Cooper: Video directing titan. The sexiness of Beasto Blanco's version of Alice's "Feed My Frankenstein." Chuck's role with Alice Cooper's band: "He's one of the greatest guys to work with... it's always just a joy to be around (him)." Alice's "Dada" album: Does he even remember recording it? Would Alice Cooper ever do an "album play" tour? What's the biggest showbiz lesson Calico learned from Alice? One of the greatest comic book adaptations of all time was Marvel Premiere #50. Car Con Carne is presented by the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston.

Welcome to Week 11, where we bring some soft focus to a bleak topic with some divorces that seem to have genuinely left everybody – and perhaps the relationship itself – in better shape. First, Stacie tells the weird story of music and television stars Sonny & Cher, and how Sonny’s unshakable vision of what Cher’s dreams looked like ultimately broke their relationship beyond repair. Then Alicia shares the tale of England’s Prince Andrew and his lady love – possibly even to this day – Sarah Ferguson. They do seem to have had a spectacularly successful divorce, and even continue to cohabitate more than two decades later.
Vandaag hoor je muziek van Eleanor Friedberger, Kim Lenz, Timber, The Fortunes, Sonny & Cher en Townes van Zandt.
Who thinks Duran Duran’s Wild Boys is pathetic and wonders how it ever got released? Starring Wham!, Tina Turner, Nik Kershaw, Alison Moyet, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Alvin Stardust and a cast of thousands!

Though he is now a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, the British-born Roger Cook began his career in the UK, first making a splash on the US charts with The Fortunes’ Top 10 hit recording of “You’ve Got Your Troubles.” Additional US singles in that era included the Top 10 hits “Green Grass” by Gary Lewis & The Playboys, “I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman,” by Whistling Jack Smith, and “Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again” by The Fortunes. In 1972 Cook scored with two different versions of “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” an international hit that began as a groundbreaking commercial jingle for Coca-Cola before becoming a successful single for The Hillside Singers and then The New Seekers. Later that year he topped the charts with The Hollies’ “Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress).” He and longtime songwriting partner Roger Greenaway were named British Songwriters of the Year two years in a row for 1971 and 1972 at the Ivor Novello awards in the the UK. In the mid-1970s, Cook moved to Nashville, where he found success with a string of #1 hits, including BMI Country Song of the Year “Talking in Your Sleep” for Crystal Gayle, “I Believe in You” for Don Williams, and “Love is on a Roll,” a song co-written with John Prine that became another #1 for Williams. Additional chart-topping hits include ASCAP Country Song of the Year “One Night at a Time” and “I Just Want to Dance With You,” both #1 singles for George Strait. Roger’s songs have been recorded by The Drifters, Frankie Valli, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, John Prine, Sonny & Cher, Chet Atkins, Nancy Wilson, Bette Midler, Petula Clark, Brenda Lee, Clint Black, Amy Grant, Reba McEntire, and others. He is a Grammy nominee, ACM nominee, three-time CMA Song of the Year nominee, and the only British inductee into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Additionally, he and Roger Greenaway were inducted into the national Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009.

MAKE MOVES 11 feat. Denny Tedesco, Producer of The Wrecking Crew! tells us how he made a movie that nobody thought he could make… with his own money… in his own way. The end result was an award winning documentary about an elite crew of Los Angeles studio musicians – including his father, Tommy Tedesco, one of the most recorded guitar players in history – who played on literally all of the hits to come from the West Coast music scene during the 1960’s. But Denny explains that he had to invest almost two decades of his life and be willing to take huge personal risks to finish the movie on his own terms. He discusses how he did it, why he couldn’t stop, the ramifications for his family, his personal connection to the movie’s story, and he reveals his ability to generate creative solutions. With permission, this episode features four songs off of The Wrecking Crew! sound track: Be My Baby by the Ronettes, God Only Knows by the Beachboys, Danke Shoen by Wayne Newton, and The Beat Goes On by Sonny & Cher. How To Make Best Use Of Both Podcast Co-Hosts – Episode 136 Today, we will open the Podcast Talent Coach mail bag and answer a few content questions I have received. The first questions is about making effective use of a co-host. The second is about consistently helping your listeners with your content. I would love to hear an episode on involving a highly effective style with a cohost. – Rick Sizemore – VR Workforce Studio CO-HOST BASICS Different point of view Distinct styles and perspectives Different voices One needs to be the leader I was listening to a business podcast the other day. It is a show that is hosted by two marketing gurus. They typically offer business advice to listeners who write or call the show. The hosts had received a question regarding unique ways to market a product. The listener had included a few methods he had used. Host number one rattled off his critique of the methods used and offered a couple of his own. Host number two basically said, “I agree with your assessment and really have nothing further to add.” When a second host (or guest for that matter) isn't offering any new information or differing opinion, the second host is unnecessary. If your podcast involves more than one person on the show, you need to have a justifiable reason for each of you to exist on the show. When there are multiple voices on a show, each voice needs a role. One of the hosts is unnecessary if two voices are offering the same information, with the same opinion persona. There are many podcasts hosted by two co-hosts. Many of those are successful, such as “On The Media” with Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield, “Manic Mommies” with Erin and Kristin, and “Mike & Mike in the Morning” with Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg. Not all two-person podcasts are structured quite as well as these. It seems two friends who have similar interests get together and start a podcast without much planning. The similar interests of the hosts seem to spawn similar opinions and positions on topics. If you and I are hosting a show, and we are both saying roughly the same thing, one of us isn't necessary. A great example of two hosts that compliment each other well is “Mike & Mike in the Morning”. Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg host “Mike & Mike in the Morning”. You can find the show broadcast on ESPN television and radio as well as their “best of” podcast online. The show recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. Both Mikes have an interest in sports. That is the commonality that brought them together. A general interest in the topic is necessary for the subject matter and foundation of the show. The differing opinions create the magic within the show. Mike and Mike come from very different background. Their different experiences have developed differing opinions, attitudes and approaches to various sports topics. These differences make the show compelling. Mike Greenberg was born to a Jewish family. He grew up in New York City. Greenberg went on to study journalism. He worked his entire career in broadcasting, beginning in Chicago, the third largest city in the United States. Mike Golic was born in suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. He played American football in College while studying finance and management at Catholic university Notre Dame in Indiana. Golic played professionally in the NFL. He then began his broadcasting career after his playing career ended. Where Greenberg approaches topics from the researcher/journalist perspective, Golic tackles those topics from the real life experience angle. Greenberg comes from the big city. Golic comes from the suburbs. Greenberg worked big-time radio in the nation's largest cities. Golic made big-time hits on one of professional sports' biggest stages. There are multiple approaches you can take on a show with multiple hosts. Good cop/bad cop is a common show structure. This is approach would position one host as the nice guy. He is there to help. Always encouraging and supporting the listener. The second host would be a bit of a jerk. He might have a big ego. This host would be in your face and telling you like it is. He wouldn't necessarily be mean. However, he would be the antagonist in the show. There is a three-person version of this called “The Dog, The Doll and The Dork”. This show involves the bad guy (the dog), the good guy (the dork) and the sweet girl to round it out (the doll). The female typically plays mediator between the two guys. This show is heard quite often on radio morning shows. You can also see “The Dog, The Doll and The Dork” in America's original version of “American Idol”. Simon Cowell was “The Dog”. He was the bad guy with the big ego. Simon was the guy everyone loves to hate. Paula Abdul played the role of “The Doll”. She was sweet while often siding with one of the two guys. She was very likeable. Paula was almost the antidote to Simon. Randy Jackson was “The Dork”. He would often play the nice guy, even while providing tough criticism. You would hear Randy say something like, “You know you're my dog, but that just wasn't good.” Randy could be seen considering the feelings of the contestants. "American Idol” is currently not as strong, because they've lost the role identity of each judge. When you watch the show, you really don't know what to expect from each judge. Is Randy going to be the nice guy or suddenly play the part of “the Dog”? Roles are inconsistent from show to show. There are many other varieties of show roles. You could use nerd/jock where one host has “studied it” and one host has “done it”. Liberal/conservative is an option if you can find a co-host with the opposing point of view. Corporation/entrepreneur could offer diverse points of view on business. Male/female is pretty clear. You simply need to select the differences that work for you. Think of some of the best duos in history. What makes them different (and therefore valuable)? McCartney & Lennon. Abbott & Costello. Siskel & Ebert. Bert & Ernie. Sonny & Cher. Milli Vanilli. Ok, maybe not that one. Each member in those great partnerships offered something different than their teammate. Often, that difference was the opposite of their counterpart. Sometimes, it was simply a different approach. Find those differences that make each of you unique. The goal of your show is to entertain your audience. Listeners have come to your show to learn something, laugh at something, or be amazed by something. Your job is to create compelling content. Debates and differing opinions are a great way to stir up emotion with your audience. It doesn't always need to be an argument. Multiple hosts simply need to offer different information. If both hosts are offering the same content, one of you are just wasting the time of your audience. You are repeating yourself when you could be dishing up new content. If you host a show with multiple people, find each individual voice and use those differences to entertain your audience. HELP OTHERS How can I help others with every show. I am so grateful for your show, keep up the good work, I point all my podcasting friends your way! You have a devoted fan on Oahu, if you need any ideas for family adventures on Oahu.... I'm your Man! - Dave Tupper - Kids Adventures Hawaii Podcast Start with the goal of your show. What is it that you want people to take from this particular episode? How will your content help them? I'm sure you've heard the phrase “what's in it for me?” Your audience will be asking this very question every time they tune into your podcast. Your introduction better tell your listener exactly how your topic will affect them. You need to hook them right at the beginning with an intriguing introduction. If you don't hook them early, they will be gone in search of something more captivating. When your audience knows what is in it for them, they begin to care. Making your listener care is the only way to get them to listen and more importantly come back again. As I was listening to a podcast recently, it suddenly hit me. How does this apply to me, and what am I getting out of this podcast? I was having a tough time answering those two questions. It was an entrepreneural podcast. The host and guest were recounting the launch and growth of the guest's company. It was a decent story. There were a few highlights about growing out of a basement and finding industry partners. The most interesting part of the story was the fast growth of the company. After twenty minutes of the show, it hit me. I really have nothing in common with this tech company. The stories being told were very specific to the guest's company. Most of all, neither the guest nor the host were making the connection between the tale of the company and lessons that could be gleaned by the listener. They were not incorporating the audience into the show at all. To truly engage your audience, you need to make the listener the star. Nobody wants to watch your home movies unless they are in them. Your listener doesn't need to be part of the show to be the star. The content could give them hope, help them envision the future, or relate to their situation. You need to help them make that connection. The key question is “what's in it for me?” Your listener isn't attracted to your podcast by your content. They listen to your podcast because of what your information can do for them. They don't buy products. They buy benefits. If your podcast is only focused on you, your product, or your guest without making a connection to the listener, the size of your audience will shrink. Engaging content must be listener focused. Keep your audience engaged by making your listener the star. Connection, put them in the show, one-on-one communication and teaching without being condescending. This week, check out the free video I have on PodcastTalentCoach.com about one-on-one communication. We discuss how to make your listener feel like they are part of the show and that your content is specifically for them. Next week, we will start a series on interviewing. How do you make the most of the time with your interview guest? What is more effective at attracting traffic, interviewing others or being interviewed? In the next few episodes, we will cover that, along with interview terms, and tips to help create powerful interviews. You can find my podcast and other tools to help you create great content at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com. Let's turn your information into engaging entertainment.

In episode 24, Dave sits down with one of the greatest managers in the history of professional wrestling, “The Mouth of the South”, Jimmy Hart. The 71 year old veteran of more than 30 years in the wrestling business has managed more than 50 singles wrestlers, with names like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Sting topping the list. Jimmy is perhaps even better known for managing some of wrestling’s all-time best tag teams to greatness, such as the Hart Foundation, Money Inc, the Nasty Boys, the Mega Powers, the Natural Disasters. Between tag teams and singles, Hart’s clients won every title there was to win in WWE during Hart’s tenure in the company. Jimmy has kind enough to talk to me at length about all sorts of things from his years in the wrestling business -- what he learned from Dick Clark while on tour with his band The Gentry’s with the Beach Boys and Sonny & Cher, Stephenwolf, The Monkees, and his transition from the music business to wrestling thanks to Jerry Lawler; the birth of his “Mouth of the South” moniker through brushings with Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman;the origins of his trademark megaphone and jackets, and who paints them for him; his new beach bar, “Jimmy Hart’s Beach Bar & Grill”, opening in Daytona Beach Florida in 2016; trading WWE memorabilia for NHL memorabilia with NHL team equipment managers during wrestling tours; is days managing the Hart Foundation, and even gives a Stu Hart impression; his departure to WCW and his roles while there; his role in the development of TNA and relationship with the Jarrett's; his experience on the reality show “Legends House”, his opinion of Vince McMahon and his WWE Network and XFL ventures; and Jimmy also shares some stories about Andre the Giant, Roddy Piper, and an absolutely crazy one about being held up at gunpoint by an escaped convict at a gas station that led to the theft of the Ultimate Warrior’s car, and a high speed chase that ended in a gunfight with police. Be sure to stick with us to the end of the show to hear that one, you don’t want to miss it.This interview was made possible by Invasion Championship Wrestling, an independent wrestling company in British Columbia, Canada, and many thanks to them for making it possible. ICW has put on 5 Kelowna Invasion events since 2013, raising tens of thousands of dollars for local charities in the process. Thanks to ICW co-founder Mike Chisolm, I was able to sit down and chat with WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Hart just prior to their most recent event in October 2015. Chas E and Mike Mitchell check out Denny Tedesco's film The Wrecking Crew. The Wrecking Crew pays tribute to the group of 1960's studio musicians who played on some of pop music's most important recordings, including the Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, the Monkees, the Byrds, and Nancy Sinatra to name a few. And you thought the Monkees themselves played on those recordings, didn't ya? In addition, The Wrecking Crew also played on numerous soundtrack and jingle recordings including the theme to M.A.S.H, Mission Impossible, and Bonanza. Chas and Mike give you the lowdown on this great documentary with their own personal reactions and clips from the film itself. The Wrecking Crew is now playing at select theaters or is available for download at Amazon. Of course, we have beer as well! Chas and Mike check out two beers this week including the Black Is The New Wit from Terrapin Beer in conjunction with New Belgium Brewing and Sriracha Hot Stout from Rogue Ales. Our good friend Jack drops in to give everyone the scoop on "witbier," and Chas finally delivers his promised song in honor of actress Renee Props aka "Lois" on Seinfeld.
Denny Tedesco, director of the documentary film about The Wrecking Crew, who recorded for The Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, The Monkees, Elvis, and MANY more, talks with Hines about the film and the screening coming up at the Gillioz Theater in Springfield, MO on Thursday, Oct. 24.
