We're starting with the powerhouse British biopic I Swear. Starring the incredible Robert Aramayo (The Rings of Power), this film tells the true story of Scottish activist John Davidson and his life with Tourette's Syndrome. It's a raw, funny, and deeply moving look at a man who refused to be silenced by a world that didn't understand him.Fun Flix Fact: Robert Aramayo's performance was so convincing that many viewers at the film's premiere genuinely believed he had Tourette's! He spent months working closely with the real John Davidson to ensure every tic and vocalisation was performed with absolute authenticity and respect.Next, we're heading to "The Junction" in the high-concept romantic drama Eternity. Elizabeth Olsen stars as Joan, a woman who reaches the afterlife only to be told she has one week to choose which husband she wants to spend eternity with: her first love who died young (Callum Turner), or the man she spent 65 years with (Miles Teller). It's basically the ultimate "Would You Rather?"Fun Flix Fact: The film doesn't shy away from dark humour—Miles Teller's character, Larry, actually ends up in the afterlife after choking on a pretzel at his grandchild's gender reveal party. Talk about an undignified exit!To tie in with the themes of speech and perseverance in I Swear, we're revisiting the 2011 Oscar-winner The King's Speech. We discuss the parallels between King George VI's struggle with his stammer and John Davidson's journey to be heard.Fun Flix Fact: The production had a stroke of incredible luck just nine weeks before filming began. The grandson of the real Lionel Logue (the speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush) discovered a hidden stash of his grandfather's original diaries and letters. These real-life documents were used to tweak the script for even more historical accuracy!Royal Secret: To help himself "feel" the stammer, Colin Firth reportedly used a physical trick of wearing a hot water bottle under his arm or placing a sharp object in his shoe during rehearsals to create the necessary physical tension. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. When the film I Swear won three Bafta awards, what happened at the ceremony prompted a much bigger story and wider discussion. The film portrays the life of John Davidson who grew up with Tourette syndrome – the incurable condition, which causes sudden, repetitive sounds or movements. During the awards, Davidson shouted out an involuntary racial slur, which was picked up by microphones and broadcast. In a statement, Davidson said he was "deeply mortified” and that the tics, as they are known, were involuntary and did not carry any meaning. In our conversations, we bring together two black Americans with Tourette's. They share their experiences, including dealing with the police. We also bring together three people in the UK to give an insight into their lives with Tourette's.
Do men communicate psychically? The BAFTA Awards show, the TV guy with tourette's, (John Davidson)—in which we actually try (and fail) to tackle a serious topic. Are Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo owed an apology? The eggshell moment.
The Awards Circuit Roundtable dissects what happened at the BAFTA Awards, when the tape-delayed telecast didn't bleep the N-word despite knowledge that Tourette's campaigner John Davidson was in the audience. Also, final predictions for SAG-AFTRA's Actor Awards; and Oscar nominee Tig Notaro discusses honoring her friend in “Come See Me In the Good Light.” Learn more about your ad choices. John Davidson has tourettes, specifically “coprolalia,” a kind of vocal tic that causes a person to compulsively say socially inappropriate things. His condition exploded into public consciousness, first with a movie based on John Davidson’s life, and then again when John shouted the N-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo at the BAFTA movie awards. The unfortunate incident has elicited outrage from defenders of racial justice and the disabled community alike. Many folks online are putting the blame in the wrong place (and there is a place to put it). We can hold understanding for disabilities AND acknowledge the harm this language causes the Black community. Our guest, Jumaane D. Williams, was the first person with tourettes to hold public office. He has served as Public Advocate since 2019, and as Council Member for the 45th District in Brooklyn beginning in 2010. He has passed more legislation than all previous Public Advocates combined. Join our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers, along with guest-host Reecie Colbert. In this Hot Topic episode of The Neurodivergent Experience, Jordan James and Simon Scott react to major BAFTA wins for I Swear — including Robert Aramayo taking home Best Actor and the EE Rising Star Award. After previously calling it a “travesty” that Aramayo wasn't Oscar-nominated, Jordan reflects on why this win feels so significant — not just for the actor, but for neurodivergent representation in film. They unpack why I Swear works: it doesn't reduce Tourette's to a stereotype, it tells the story of one human being. The film focuses on John Davidson's life, not just his diagnosis — showing difference without pity, and representation without forcing a message. The conversation expands into a wider discussion about authentic storytelling vs performative diversity, why some representation feels natural while others feel manufactured, and how shows like Malcolm in the Middle, The Simpsons, Stranger Things, Bob's Burgers, and Rick and Morty have portrayed neurodivergent-coded characters for decades without making diagnosis the sole narrative.Note: This episode was recorded before wider discussion emerged regarding a moment during the BAFTA ceremony involving an involuntary vocal tic from John Davidson. We recognise the complexity and sensitivity of the situation. Our discussion here focuses specifically on the significance of authentic neurodivergent representation in film. This episode discusses:Robert Aramayo's BAFTA winWhy I Swear resonates so deeplyAuthentic vs forced representationTourette's, autism, ADHD and coded charactersThe legacy of Rain Man and stereotypesWhy storytelling should centre the person, not the conditionHow powerful representation builds confidenceNeurodivergent “goggles” and seeing ND traits everywhereWhy natural inclusion works better than box-tickingA passionate, funny, and thoughtful reaction episode about film, advocacy, and why authentic representation matters more than ever. Our Sponsors:

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to introduce the next film to the reviewed, "Soul Men." The 2008 film follows two estranged soul-singing legends who agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson and the late great Bernie Mac. Available to stream for free on Tubi. The random topic this week we tackle the complex and difficult incident that unfolded at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards when John Davidson, a Tourette's syndrome activist and subject of the nominated film "I Swear," involuntarily shouted racial slurs—including the N-word—while Black actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented an award. This isn't a simple story. It's a collision of disability rights, anti-Black racism, media responsibility, and institutional failure. What happened: Davidson, who has spent decades advocating for Tourette's awareness, experienced involuntary vocal tics throughout the ceremony. His condition causes coprolalia—the uncontrollable utterance of socially inappropriate words. When Jordan and Lindo took the stage, Davidson's tic produced the N-word, audible throughout the venue. The BBC's failure: Despite broadcasting on a two-hour delay (giving them time to edit), the BBC left the slur in the broadcast AND on iPlayer for 15+ hours. Yet they DID edit out other content, including a "Free Palestine" statement and political jokes. The selective editing reveals a catastrophic failure/purposeful behavior in judgment and priorities. The complications: This incident sits at the painful intersection of two marginalized communities. Davidson has no control over his tics—they represent the opposite of his actual beliefs. Yet Black attendees, including production designer Hannah Beachler, experienced real racial trauma. Lindo told Vanity Fair he wished BAFTA had spoken to them afterward. Host Alan Cumming's apology said "sorry if you were offended" was woefully inadequate. Why this matters for cinema: The film "I Swear" was nominated for multiple BAFTAs and won three awards, including Best Actor for Robert Aramayo's portrayal of Davidson. The movie exists to educate about Tourette's. Yet BAFTA and the BBC failed both the disability community AND the Black community in how they handled this moment. We discuss:- The impossible position both communities were put in due to the BBC's actions or lack thereof- Why institutional preparation and response failed catastrophically- The difference between individual accountability and systemic responsibility- How ableism and anti-Black racism played out in the aftermath (including the idea of "he meant that shit" comments)- What should have happened vs. what did happen- The broader conversation about representation, disability, and whose comfort gets prioritizedThis is a conversation about nuance, compassion, and holding institutions accountable when they fail vulnerable communities.Full Black on Black Cinema episodes coming soon. After several weeks away, Izzy returns for a solo Mental Man Monday livestream, marking a reset season both personally and creatively. What began as a short break turned into a necessary period of rest, reflection, and recalibration. Izzy opens the livestream by sharing a personal milestone—purchasing a 2023 white Toyota—symbolizing progress, responsibility, and faith in God's provision despite new financial pressure. While the new car represents growth, Izzy speaks honestly about the mental weight of stepping into new levels of responsibility and trusting that obedience and consistency will unlock the next season of provision. With Season 10 approaching, inspired heavily by Kanye West's Graduation album, Izzy reflects on what it means to recognize your identity and calling before external validation ever arrives. From there, the conversation shifts into conspiracy, mental health, and spiritual discernment through analysis of a viral TikTok discussing the Epstein files and the idea that marijuana—referred to as “lettuce”—may make individuals harder to manipulate because it encourages deeper questioning, while alcohol remains widely promoted. Izzy offers a transparent reflection on his own past experiences with both substances, acknowledging that marijuana sometimes led him to deeper introspection, but also warning about the spiritual vulnerability it can create. He introduces the concept of pharmakia, explaining how substance use can open spiritual and psychological doors that ultimately weaken discipline and clarity. While acknowledging the cultural argument that marijuana “opens the mind,” Izzy challenges listeners to consider whether being harder to manipulate externally means losing control internally, emphasizing that spiritual sobriety, mental discipline, and self-awareness remain essential for true freedom. The livestream then pivots into a viral controversy involving Tourette's advocate John Davison, who involuntarily used a racial slur during a public awards ceremony. Izzy examines the mental health complexity of Tourette's syndrome, emphasizing empathy and understanding while also discussing personal responsibility and the importance of public accountability—even when harm is unintentional. He explores how mental health conditions intersect with public perception, grace, and the ethical responsibility to acknowledge harm, reinforcing that mental illness explains behavior but does not erase the need for compassion, humility, and reconciliation. Finally, Izzy addresses backlash against artist Jelly Roll after publicly crediting Jesus for transforming his life while declining to speak extensively on political issues. Izzy examines how public expressions of Christian faith often attract criticism, arguing that faith-based transformation stories are frequently dismissed or attacked when they don't align with cultural or political expectations. He reflects on how spiritual conviction, personal healing, and public criticism intersect, encouraging listeners to remain grounded in their beliefs even when misunderstood or scrutinized.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.TrustBuilder Package

The BBC is under fire over its failure to remove a racial slur shouted by John Davidson, who has Tourette syndrome, from its broadcast of the Bafta awards. Davidson was heard shouting the N-word while two stars of the film Sinners, Delroy Lindo and Michael B Jordan, were on stage. He said controversy over the incident had left him “distraught” and that he had been assured any offensive words would be edited out. The BBC has apologised for the error and said producers overseeing the coverage did not hear the slur. The media is in a state of total meltdown after John Davidson, a man living with severe Tourette's Syndrome, ticked a racial slur during the BAFTA awards. But while the "Outrage Industrial Complex" is busy ritualistically condemning a man for his biology, Austin Petersen is digging into the science, the history, and the dangerous superstition of modern linguistic taboos. In this episode, we strip the "magical power" away from the words that the regime uses to control your speech and your mind. In this episode:
An actor with Tourette's let loose the n-word at the BAFTA awards and the internet is on fire. Some people are actually blaming the actor, John Davidson, for being racist against Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo... even though he can't control his tics. This includes YouTuber Grace Randolph, Jamie Foxx, and 90% of BlueSky. Other say the BAFTAs didn't do enough apologizing. Amy and T.J. discuss what wasn’t said in John Davidson’s statement after he shouted the N Word at acclaimed black actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo at the BAFTA awards. While it’s true that Davidson - who suffers from Tourette Syndrome - could not control his outburst, it doesn’t mean it didn’t inflict harm. In his official statement, Davidson thanked the public for their support and said he’s spent his life teaching “empathy, kindness, and understanding from others, and I will continue to do so.” But what he didn’t say was “I’m sorry” or even acknowledge the names of Jordan and Lindo - to apologize for the painful humiliation they endured at his outburst.
