The conversation emphasizes listening to lived experience, empathy, and accountability for media decisions, including reported editing choices. In the Deep Cut segment, they revisit "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," noting outdated stereotypes and body-shaming, and discuss the film's shallow treatment of caregiving, grief, Arnie's disability portrayal, and Bonnie's dignity, including the ending's "convenient" resolution. This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi return from a whirlwind UK trip and jump straight back into movie mode with a packed episode covering three wildly different films. First up is I Swear, the emotionally powerful true story of a Scottish man living with Tourette's syndrome. Then the hosts dive into The Drama, a provocative and sharply written relationship thriller starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson that sparks one of the podcast's most fascinating discussions of the year. Finally, they tackle Michael, Antoine Fuqua's glossy and highly controversial Michael Jackson biopic. Along the way, there are streaming recommendations ranging from Gordon Ramsay's restaurant empire to the one-take kitchen thriller Boiling Point, plus conversations about morality, celebrity, art versus artist, and whether audiences can ever truly know the people they idolize. Streaming Picks – “I Can't Find Anything to Watch…” Being Gordon Ramsay – Netflix Rashmi recommends this entertaining behind-the-scenes docuseries following Gordon Ramsay as he prepares to launch his enormous new London restaurant venture at Bishopsgate. Boiling Point – Tubi Yazdi highlights Stephen Graham's intense single-take restaurant drama – a technical filmmaking achievement capturing one disastrous night inside a London kitchen. Send Help – Hulu / Disney+ Joe revisits one of the team's favorite films of the year so far, now arriving on streaming platforms after its theatrical run. I Swear Based on the true story of Scottish Tourette's advocate John Davidson, this heartfelt drama explores misunderstanding, kindness, resilience, and the importance of empathy. Yazdi calls it “the movie we need right now.” The Drama Starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, this provocative relationship thriller takes a single uncomfortable revelation and spirals it into emotional chaos during wedding week. Funny, tense, morally messy, and one of the strongest films of the year according to all three hosts. Michael Antoine Fuqua's officially sanctioned Michael Jackson biopic delivers nostalgia, iconic music, and fan service in equal measure. The hosts discuss the film's strengths, its deliberate omissions, and the challenge of separating artistic brilliance from personal controversy. We reviewed the big movie of the weekend, the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael," on Tuesday. But there are plenty of other new releases as we await the summer crush. Here's what we discussed in the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast: OVER YOUR DEAD BODY. Samara Weaving and Jason Segel play a miserable married couple who go on a weekend getaway to work on their relationship -- or so they've told each other. Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis co-star in this twisty action comedy from director Jorma Taccone ("Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping"). In theaters. I SWEAR. Robert Aramayo was the surprise best actor winner at the BAFTAs this year for his portrayal of John Davidson, a Scottish man with Tourette syndrome. Writer-director Kirk Jones' film is formulaic in its depiction of adversity, but its heart is in the right place. Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Scott Ellis Watson co-star. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Always a lot to talk about, including "Michael" reactions, early footage of "The Mandalorian & Grogu," casting on Alex Garland's "Elden Ring" movie and more. We won't be here next Friday in solidarity with a nationwide labor strike, but come back on May 8. Thanks for sharing some of your weekend with us! Why We Can't Stop Talking About Race: A Conversation with Carole Copeland Thomas

Everyday Conversations on Race for Everyday People

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 28, 2026 55:39

Carole Copeland Thomas has been black all her life — and she's spent decades making sure that means something in every room she walks into. Born in a Black hospital in Detroit during segregation, raised in a middle-class family where college was expected and Black excellence was the air she breathed.  Carole became a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) who helps organizations turn complex challenges into real action. In this conversation, Carole and Simma go deep — on race, history, identity, the current political moment, and what all of us need to do right now. They talk about why race is still the conversation we can't skip, what the BAFTA incident with John Davidson tells us about how racist language gets embedded in the brain, and why erasing HBCUs, Black Greek organizations, and Black history doesn't just harm Black people — it harms everyone. They also get into the overlooked history of Black-Jewish solidarity in the civil rights movement, the economic consequences of Project 2025, and what resistance actually looks like in 2026 — from Delta Sigma Theta's Capitol Hill days to the Costco parking lot. This is a conversation for people who want to understand where we are, how we got here, and what to do next. 3 Key Takeaways From This Episode 1- Know your history — all of it. You can't understand where we are without knowing how race was legally constructed in this country, why HBCUs and Black Greek organizations exist, and why the Black-Jewish alliance in the civil rights movement matters. Ignorance isn't neutral — it leaves you open to misinformation. 2- A reason is not an excuse. Whether it's the BAFTA incident, racially charged policies, or everyday bias — understanding why something happened doesn't make it okay. Hold both truths: context matters, and so does impact. 3- Resistance is not optional — and it's not one thing. Vote in the 2026 primaries. Show up for your neighbors across difference. Support organizations like the ACLU and NAACP. Use your voice at work, in your community, and at the polls. What Simma and Carole do every day — having these conversations — is also resistance.   TIMESTAMPS 0:00 — Introduction & welcome 2:15 — Introducing Carole Copeland Thomas: CSP speaker, leadership expert, Boston-based 5:00 — Carole congratulates Simma for keeping the podcast name9:00 — DEI under attack: Time Magazine, equity vs. equality, and why the concepts aren't going anywhere13:30 — "We're OGs in this field" — what diversity originally meant before it became a buzzword15:30 — Why are we still talking about race? He grabbed all the headlines at the Baftas for all the wrong reasons. Imagine what it was like to grow up with the neurological disorder, Tourette Syndrome, at a time when very little was known about it. That was the experience of Scotsman, John Davidson in the 1980s. Tourettes causes tics - uncontrollable and repetitive movements and vocalisations, like obscene gestures or swearing. John's story - one of both early rejection - and eventual acceptance - forms the basis for the biopic I Swear. Directed by Kirk Jones, it was nominated for five BAFTAs including Outstanding British Film and won for Leading Actor and Casting. It also captured headlines when John experienced a racially offensive verbal tic during the ceremony which was broadcast by the BBC. Kirk talks to Mihingarangi Forbes about the challenges of bringing John's story to the screen.

What does "best" actually mean when the Oscars put it on a ballot — and who gets to decide? Matthew sits down with Andy Nelson, co-founder of the TruStory FM family of podcasts, to pull apart the machinery of awards season: how guild voting shapes nominations, why campaigns matter as much as performances, and whether the whole system is rewarding craft or just rewarding whoever threw the better party. Before they get to Oscar strategy, they open with a timely and honest conversation about the BAFTA controversy involving John Davidson — an executive producer with Tourette's syndrome — and what the institution's response revealed about the difference between intent and harm. From there the conversation moves across category fraud (how films like The Favourite and Green Book gamed the lead vs. supporting divide), the impossible split between "Golden" from K-pop Demon Hunter and "I Lied to You" from Sinners as competing definitions of best song, and why genre films still fight for Oscar legitimacy decades after Star Wars got its first nomination.Andy ultimately defends award season as a cultural time capsule — imperfect, political, and very human, but still one of the best tools we have for asking: what did this moment in film actually mean?More about Andy | The Next Reel | Cinema Scope | Movies We Like**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. When the film I Swear won three Bafta awards, what happened at the ceremony prompted a much bigger story and wider discussion. The film portrays the life of John Davidson who grew up with Tourette syndrome – the incurable condition, which causes sudden, repetitive sounds or movements. During the awards, Davidson shouted out an involuntary racial slur, which was picked up by microphones and broadcast. In a statement, Davidson said he was "deeply mortified” and that the tics, as they are known, were involuntary and did not carry any meaning. In our conversations, we bring together two black Americans with Tourette's. They share their experiences, including dealing with the police. We also bring together three people in the UK to give an insight into their lives with Tourette's.

John Davidson has tourettes, specifically “coprolalia,” a kind of vocal tic that causes a person to compulsively say socially inappropriate things. His condition exploded into public consciousness, first with a movie based on John Davidson’s life, and then again when John shouted the N-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo at the BAFTA movie awards. The unfortunate incident has elicited outrage from defenders of racial justice and the disabled community alike. Many folks online are putting the blame in the wrong place (and there is a place to put it). We can hold understanding for disabilities AND acknowledge the harm this language causes the Black community. Our guest, Jumaane D. Williams, was the first person with tourettes to hold public office. He has served as Public Advocate since 2019, and as Council Member for the 45th District in Brooklyn beginning in 2010. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to introduce the next film to the reviewed, "Soul Men." The 2008 film follows two estranged soul-singing legends who agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson and the late great Bernie Mac. Available to stream for free on Tubi. The random topic this week we tackle the complex and difficult incident that unfolded at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards when John Davidson, a Tourette's syndrome activist and subject of the nominated film "I Swear," involuntarily shouted racial slurs—including the N-word—while Black actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented an award. This isn't a simple story. It's a collision of disability rights, anti-Black racism, media responsibility, and institutional failure. What happened: Davidson, who has spent decades advocating for Tourette's awareness, experienced involuntary vocal tics throughout the ceremony. His condition causes coprolalia—the uncontrollable utterance of socially inappropriate words. When Jordan and Lindo took the stage, Davidson's tic produced the N-word, audible throughout the venue. The BBC's failure: Despite broadcasting on a two-hour delay (giving them time to edit), the BBC left the slur in the broadcast AND on iPlayer for 15+ hours. Yet they DID edit out other content, including a "Free Palestine" statement and political jokes. The selective editing reveals a catastrophic failure/purposeful behavior in judgment and priorities. The complications: This incident sits at the painful intersection of two marginalized communities. Davidson has no control over his tics—they represent the opposite of his actual beliefs. Yet Black attendees, including production designer Hannah Beachler, experienced real racial trauma. Lindo told Vanity Fair he wished BAFTA had spoken to them afterward. Host Alan Cumming's apology said "sorry if you were offended" was woefully inadequate. Why this matters for cinema: The film "I Swear" was nominated for multiple BAFTAs and won three awards, including Best Actor for Robert Aramayo's portrayal of Davidson. The movie exists to educate about Tourette's. Yet BAFTA and the BBC failed both the disability community AND the Black community in how they handled this moment. We discuss:- The impossible position both communities were put in due to the BBC's actions or lack thereof- Why institutional preparation and response failed catastrophically- The difference between individual accountability and systemic responsibility- How ableism and anti-Black racism played out in the aftermath (including the idea of "he meant that shit" comments)- What should have happened vs. what did happen- The broader conversation about representation, disability, and whose comfort gets prioritizedThis is a conversation about nuance, compassion, and holding institutions accountable when they fail vulnerable communities.Full Black on Black Cinema episodes coming soon. After several weeks away, Izzy returns for a solo Mental Man Monday livestream, marking a reset season both personally and creatively. What began as a short break turned into a necessary period of rest, reflection, and recalibration. Izzy opens the livestream by sharing a personal milestone—purchasing a 2023 white Toyota—symbolizing progress, responsibility, and faith in God's provision despite new financial pressure. While the new car represents growth, Izzy speaks honestly about the mental weight of stepping into new levels of responsibility and trusting that obedience and consistency will unlock the next season of provision. With Season 10 approaching, inspired heavily by Kanye West's Graduation album, Izzy reflects on what it means to recognize your identity and calling before external validation ever arrives. From there, the conversation shifts into conspiracy, mental health, and spiritual discernment through analysis of a viral TikTok discussing the Epstein files and the idea that marijuana—referred to as “lettuce”—may make individuals harder to manipulate because it encourages deeper questioning, while alcohol remains widely promoted. Izzy offers a transparent reflection on his own past experiences with both substances, acknowledging that marijuana sometimes led him to deeper introspection, but also warning about the spiritual vulnerability it can create. He introduces the concept of pharmakia, explaining how substance use can open spiritual and psychological doors that ultimately weaken discipline and clarity. While acknowledging the cultural argument that marijuana “opens the mind,” Izzy challenges listeners to consider whether being harder to manipulate externally means losing control internally, emphasizing that spiritual sobriety, mental discipline, and self-awareness remain essential for true freedom. The livestream then pivots into a viral controversy involving Tourette's advocate John Davison, who involuntarily used a racial slur during a public awards ceremony. Izzy examines the mental health complexity of Tourette's syndrome, emphasizing empathy and understanding while also discussing personal responsibility and the importance of public accountability—even when harm is unintentional. He explores how mental health conditions intersect with public perception, grace, and the ethical responsibility to acknowledge harm, reinforcing that mental illness explains behavior but does not erase the need for compassion, humility, and reconciliation. Finally, Izzy addresses backlash against artist Jelly Roll after publicly crediting Jesus for transforming his life while declining to speak extensively on political issues. Izzy examines how public expressions of Christian faith often attract criticism, arguing that faith-based transformation stories are frequently dismissed or attacked when they don't align with cultural or political expectations. He reflects on how spiritual conviction, personal healing, and public criticism intersect, encouraging listeners to remain grounded in their beliefs even when misunderstood or scrutinized.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.TrustBuilder Package
