Eun-Ha Paek in her studio in Brooklyn, 2024. Photo by Helmi Korhonen. Courtesy of Hostler Burrows Brooklyn-based multimedia artist Eun-Ha Paek's sculptures give physical form to the artist's inner narratives and personal history, while exploring broader themes of identity and human experience. Paek's hybrid approach to ceramics is informed by her background in animation and film. Her attempts to roll increasingly smaller, tighter coils eventually led her to introduce 3D printing to her practice, enabling detail that would not be possible by hand. The resulting pieces, while finally static, are created through a process that in many ways mimics stop motion animation. Paek's work, across media, investigates questions of identity through storytelling. Hints of recognizable references and motifs are present in her figures, but this host of characters is the unique product of a visual language developed to give shape to the artist's internal dialogue. Born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1974, Paek currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received a BFA in Film/Animation/Video from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she has also been a guest lecturer. Paek's work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, and she is the recipient of several awards and grants including the Windgate Scholarship and Rudy Autio Grant from the Archie Bray Foundation. Paek's animated films have screened in the Guggenheim Museum, Sundance Film Festival, and venues around the world. She has been a guest lecturer at the Fashion Institute of Technology, a visiting critic at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and she currently serves on the faculty at Parsons School of Design/The New School. M. Abstract: It has been suggested that the synchronization of neural oscillations to syntactic units, such as phrases or clauses, is dependent on lexically-derived projections of syntactic structure. This assertion is based from recent evidence that participants are unable to effectively track syntax when listening to jabberwocky sentences, in which content words are replaced with pseudowords thereby eliminating lexically-derived syntactic projections (Kaufeld et al., 2020; Coopmans et al., 2022). In the present study, we present evidence that participants can in fact track syntactic units in jabberwocky sentences when the stimuli are presented visually and in a syntactic pattern with high cue validity - methodological differences that make it easier for participants to identify syntactic patterns. We interpret this finding as indicating that the primary driving force of cortical tracking is pattern recognition and temporal predication of said pattern and that this pattern need not derive from lexical projections. B., Enriquez, L., Quang, D., Hsu, P.-K., Paek, J., Owango, D., Castrillo, C., Nicola, J., Ramkumar, P., Lash, A., Flanzer, D., Shah, K., Kato, S., Skibinski, G. Abstract: Human-derived cortical organoids (hCOs) recapitulate cell diversity and 3D structure found in the human brain and offer a promising model for discovery of new gene therapies targeting neurological disorders. Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are the most promising vehicles for non-invasive gene delivery to the central nervous system (CNS), but reliable and reproducible in vitro models to assess their clinical potential are lacking. hCOs can take on these issues as they are a physiologically relevant model to assess AAV transduction efficiency, cellular tropism, and biodistribution within the tissue parenchyma, all of which could significantly modulate therapeutic efficacy. Here, we examine a variety of naturally occurring AAV serotypes and measure their ability to transduce neurons and glia in hCOs from multiple donors. We demonstrate cell tropism driven by AAV serotype and hCO donor and quantify fractions of neurons and astrocytes transduced with GFP as well as overall hCO health. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.07.531593v1?rss=1 Authors: Jose, E., March-Steinman, W., Wilson, B. A., Shanks, L., Paek, A. L. Abstract: The p53 and FOXO transcription factors (TFs) share many similarities despite their distinct evolutionary origins. Both TFs are activated by a variety of cellular stresses and upregulate genes in similar pathways including cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis. Oxidative stress from excess H2O2 activates both FOXO1 and p53, yet whether they are activated at the same time is unclear. Here we found that cells respond to high H2O2 levels in two temporal phases. In the first phase FOXO1 rapidly shuttles to the nucleus while p53 levels remain low. In the second phase FOXO1 exits the nucleus and p53 levels rise. We found that other oxidative stress induced TFs are activated in the first phase with FOXO1 (NF-{kappa}B, NFAT1), or the second phase with p53 (NRF2, JUN) but not both following H2O2 stress. The two TF phases result in large differences in gene expression patterns. Finally, we provide evidence that 2-Cys peroxiredoxins control the timing of the TF phases in response to H2O2. What does it look like to be vulnerable as an artist in the Christian music industry? On this week's episode of the Christian Music Industry Podcast, I get the privilege of interviewing James Paek about his journey in the industry as an Asian-American artist, songwriter and pastor. James honestly shares about his struggles and challenges as an artist who doesn't look like the majority of Christian music. We also talk about his experience on the TV show Alter Ego (Fox) and his work as a design researcher. I'm so thankful for James' vulnerability - I know you will feel encouraged and inspired when you listen. James Paek is a singer/songwriter who sits at the intersection of music and spirituality. Having been a part of projects as a songwriter and vocalist both inside and outside of the Church (Pablo Nouvelle, Yngcult, Kylan Road, Willow Worship, Je'kob), James is now venturing out as an artist in his own namesake with the upcoming release of his debut EP entitled "Exit Us" produced by Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham, Jon Foreman) and James Krausse (Half Alive). "Exit Us" is an exploration of healing, of mourning, of questioning, and of leaving a what was once known to venture into what is honest. James Paek is a pastor, artist and design researcher. Although James has been serving in ministry as a worship leader and speaking pastor for over 15 years (Willow, CCV), James' exploratory and artistic spirit has seen him visit other areas of interest and passion. In 2016, James' fascination with technology and human centered design had him working alongside civilla, Google, and Ideo Consultants with Ei on projects at the intersection of innovation and social good. For instance, James worked with the Michigan Department of Human and Health Services reimagining the Public Assistance application process (Project Re:form). James' first love, music, has driven him to write songs and perform from a young age. James has written songs for both mainstream and gospel artists including Pablo Nouvelle & Je'kob of the Dove Award Winning Souljahz, while also creating for his band, Kylan Road. With renewed energy after taking a sabbatical for the majority of 2021 and being a part of Season 1 of Alter Ego, James is ready to share his debut solo project EXIT US with the world (coming soon). Two-time Stanley Cup winner Jim Paek is the latest guest to join host Dan Kerry on The Nottingham Panthers' Audio Experience. The conversation starts with a bang as Jim gets into the infamous bench-clearing brawl between the Panthers & Steelers before getting into all facets of his time in Nottingham, including his love of the city & the memories that were rekindled when he returned in 2018 and took in the traditional Boxing Day game inside the Motorpoint Arena. The conversaton then shifts to Jim's time in the NHL where he won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins, playing alongside the likes of Jaromir Jagr & Mario Lemieux, before a trade to the LA Kings saw him suit up alongside the Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky.Once he hung up the skates Jim swiftly moved into the coaching side of the game where he spent time with the Grand Rapids Griffins, part of the Detroit Red Wings organisation sitting under the coaching tree of the legendary Mike Babcock (whom he shares a hilarious story about involving a trading card), where he won the Calder Cup before moving on to the international stage with his native South Korea.Jim then gets into his coaching philosophies, what he loves about ice hockey and what it is that's driving him to continue within the game to this day in an absolutely not to be missed conversation.

A., Flanzer, D., Chao, D., Skibinski, G., Kato, S., Escola, S. Abstract: Cerebral organoids provide unparalleled access to human brain development in vitro. However, variability induced by current culture methodologies precludes using organoids as robust disease models. To address this, we developed an automated Organoid Culture and Assay (OrCA) system to support longitudinal unbiased phenotyping of organoids at scale across multiple patient lines. We then characterized organoid variability using novel machine learning methods and found that the contribution of donor, clone, and batch is significant and remarkably consistent over gene expression, morphology, and cell-type composition. Next, we performed multi-factorial protocol optimization, producing a directed forebrain protocol compatible with 96-well culture that exhibits low variability while preserving tissue complexity. Finally, we used OrCA to study tuberous sclerosis, a disease with known genetics but poorly representative animal models. For the first time, we report highly reproducible morphological and molecular signatures of disease in heterozygous TSC+/- forebrain organoids, demonstrating the benefit of a scaled organoid system for phenotype discovery in human disease models. John ta;lks with Storm Davenport about her ceramics works and involvement in the Kapiti Arts Trail. Kāpiti Arts Trail: Guide Listing no. 28 Artistic medium: Sculpture, Paintings Storm sculpts and paints from her studio in Paraparaumu Beach. Ceramics: In 2016 I began to work with clay, and taking my work into three dimensional sculptural forms feels like a natural progression. It is important to me to use New Zealand clay for my work, which I fire in my electric kiln in the studio or outside in the Raku gas kiln or drum fire. I enjoy natural effects, movement, and asymmetry. I'm not concerned with perfection: allowing the fire to leave its own markings brings an element of surprise to the piece. Natural pigments such as oxides, iron, and copper interest me. Glaze work is also something I enjoy with the volcanic effects that come from layering reactive glazes. Painting: This year I’m working on a series of textured, almost sculptural forms playing with light and shadow. I welcome visitors to my studio, and enjoying making one-off personal works, accepting several commissions a year. Exhibitions in 2018 included the Odlin Gallery, the Paekākāriki Art Show, the Rick Rudd Ceramic Art Awards, and the Kāpiti Arts Trail.

This week we have singer, songwriter, and dancer, Lydia Paek AKA @thelyddz in the pod! As an OG member of the original @questcrew, Lydia has been a dancer at heart. As a lover of music and dance, she soon found her love and gift for creating music. She ventured out into the KPOP scene where she became a composer and songwriter for the Korean pop music label @yg_ent_official. With a catalogue of hit songs on the charts, Lydia has had a very extensive and successful career as an artist. All that said, her identity has never been based on what she does, but rather in why she’s doing it. In the ever changing landscape of the entertainment industry, Lydia has been able to base her success not on how many hit songs she’s written, but rather on making decisions that fulfill her life’s purpose. For anyone who has ever wondered why they’re doing what they’re doing, this is a very sobering way to take inventory of your “WHY” Jump in! Emily Paek was one of the first craft chocolate makers in Korea, and quite frankly, it’s been a long road to journey down. Over the last few years I’ve had the honor of watching Emily’s chocolate brand, Public Chocolatory, grow into its space and educate the Korean public as to the merits of craft chocolate. Being located outside of Seoul, where the majority of tourists stay, has been both a blessing and a curse. While Emily has no chocolate competition in Chuncheon, the local market is about 2% the size of Seoul (an unfair comparison, but still). Other than a recently-hired employee, the shop has been a one-woman show for almost 3 years. So how does one bring fine chocolate to a populace still getting used to the idea of dessert, but fully willing to pay $6 for a cup of coffee? Note that the topic of the Korean chocolate market plays heavily in my questions thanks to the podcast episode for which I was interviewing Emily. When Chris Paek worked at the United Nations, interns were given unusually wide access to facilities and events. As a result, he sometimes found himself in meetings with world leaders, such as former (and now deceased) Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. It was a far cry from his all boys Catholic high school in Orange County. In this episode, Chris shares his journey from the OC to New York to London to South Africa, how PAAC helped break down his cognitive firewall, and his work with the PAAC Writers Collaborative. Plastic Free July champion, Flo McNeill, has instigated possibly Welly's first official plastic bag alternative system, the Paekākāriki Bag Bank, in an effort to support her whole community on the road to becoming plastic bag free.
Host Dave Cunning traveled to Seoul, South Korea to talk with Jim Paek for episode 19. Paek is the first Korean born hockey player to not only play in the NHL, but to win the Stanley Cup, which he did twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1990's. After transitioning into coaching after his playing career concluded, Paek coached the Grand Rapids Griffins to a Calder Cup title, and was recently named head coach of South Korea's national team, and will guide the Koreans into the 2018 Winter Olympics. During the interview, Jim spoke about how he's perceived in Korea's hockey community and his desire to improve hockey in his home nation, the freedom he has to make team decisions, his Korean skills, the language barrier, and how he works through communication issues on the team, the use of foreign born naturalized players to better South Korea's chances and the pros and cons of that approach, the pressure and expectations for the national team that his resume brings, how the team can compete against the world's best nations in 2018 while currently ranked two divisions down from their level and the fairness of them being in the tournament, how hard it was to make it to the NHL as a Korean and how he got there, playing with Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky, playing under Scotty Bowman and working with Mike Babcock, what he learned from them, returning to the NHL as a coach, juggling being a husband and parent while being continents away from his family, and he makes a verbal commitment to help hockey grow in Jeju!
