This week we're witnessing an iconic team-up that took an event as big as the Olympics to manifest! Mario and Sonic set their differences aside long enough to share billing in the MARIO & SONIC series, taking them to various Olympic games to compete in mini-game versions of real-life Olympic events. This time, we're talking about the games for the 2014 winter event in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 summer games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! Does this series go for the gold or is it stuck with the shameful, shameful bronze? Tobin welcomes Canadian Curler turned Broadcaster, Jill Officer to the show. Jill talks about her curling career, her friendship with Jennifer Jones, transitioning away from curling, and about going back to school to pursue another interest of hers that could potentially take her back into curling but in a different role. Jill and I also discuss being screeched in, curling in a bubble and if there were any other sports Jill considered playing that could have possibly reached the same success as her curling career. Sportswashing refers to an organisation or state investing in sport to improve its public image. China's hosting of the upcoming winter games appears to be exactly this, as they attempt to display themselves to the world as a strong and prosperous nation. This is while China stands accused of crimes against humanity amounting to genocide of the Uighur Muslim population. In Episode 5 of the Sustaining Sport podcast, we review the entire history of sportswashing with the Olympic games including why it keeps happening. We then look at options, such as a boycott, that we as fans of the games have to prevent more sportswashing in the future! Please feel free to reach out to the show onWeb: sustainingsport.comInstagram: @sustainingsportLinkedin: /sustaining-sportEmail: benmole@sustainingsport.comFacebook: @sustainingsportAnd now also on Twitter! @SustainSportPodThis podcast now has a Patreon. This episode I talk to Gracie Gold about our favorite Sochi memories, and the realities of Comeback hardships after taking a long break from sport. We expose the common misconception: "Work hard and you'll be the skater you once were", and instead shine a light on how the physical and mental game of returning to sport after long hiatus is learning to be a different skater. We also touch on Body Image and the current wave of younger skaters, with some advice from Gracie on treating your body with kindness.Ads:Betonline -- www.betonline.ag Beachly -- www.beach.ly Code: SKATINGViome. -- www.viome.com Code: POLINA

Italian Michela Moioli felt nervous ahead of her first Olympic snowboard cross final at Sochi 2014. Those nerves turned to despair as her medal hopes were crushed when she crashed heavily. Aged just 18, her career was in jeopardy after suffering a torn cruciate ligament in her knee. But, she dedicated herself to making a comeback and, four years later at PyeongChang 2018, she won gold. We spoke to Michela about pasta, post-Olympic blues, and Beijing 2022. LINKS: Against All Odds Michela Moioli Instagram

Man, it seems like Sochi 2014 was forever ago, doesn't it? Yet, it's the most recent Winter Olympic Games. Before we go full-on feverish for PyeongChang 2018, we're going to take a look back at some of the stories from the Sochi Olympics. First up is Nate Bartholomay, U.S. pairs skater, to give us an athlete's perspective of what Sochi was like, competition-wise. Then we talk to his sibling Jamie, who got to go to Sochi to cheer Nate on in person. Hear their story of the family/fan perspective--and find out what it's like to be the type of person who's not even supposed to exist in Russia. Next we talk to our friend and Olympin president Don Bigsby, who got to see a part of Russia that most visitors don't. Luckily, he got back to tell the story. Finally, remember how in Sochi the big story was that the athletes' rooms and hotels were kind of shoddy -- so much so that a bobsledder had to break through his bathroom door in order to get out? We've got the full deets, thanks to Nick Cunningham, who very well might've been the reason it happened in the first place. All this, plus trivia! We're starting the first of our deep dives into specific Olympic sports--and yeah, we understand that this deep dive equals long podcast, but you're in for a great ride. We're talking bobsled, which for this Olympics is going to be especially interesting, as Team USA is going into the Games clouded by a shadow of tragedy. We also get into the finer points of the sport with US Brakeman/Olympic hopeful Lauren Gibbs and US Pilot/two-time Olympian Nick Cunningham. Plus, an update on our bobsledder Josh Williamson, the craziness that's happening in Team GB bobsled, and bobsled trivia! We return to Canada today to talk to one of the greatest Canadian athletes from the exciting sport of short track speed skating, Charles Hamelin! A 3 time Olympian, 4 time medalist, including 3 gold medals, Charles takes us through his Olympic journeys from Torino to Vancouver to Sochi, as well as how things are shaping up for next year in Pyeongchang, including whether or not it will be his final Olympic appearance. Charles also tells us the story winning back to back medals within 35 minutes of each other, filming his famous Sport Chek commercial, and where his Olympic medals are kept to this day. Of course as always we go over our famous "I Am Canadian" set of questions.

We talked about Canada's route to gold, USA's fall from grace, Backstrom's Olympic suspension, how it affected Sweden's outcome and why team doctors weren't regulating his intake better, whether Canada's win justifies all the heavily critcised roster adjustments the coaching staff made, who steps into Steve Yzerman's role next Olympics, who Canada would send if the NHL chose not to participate in the 2018 Olympics, what the alternative to the Olympics as a best-on-best tournament would be, how John Tavares' Olympic injury affects the decision for the NHL to return or not, how it affects the Islanders going forward this season, how Olympic performances affect NHL players finishing their NHL season, and more.
