He's a published author (Everything is Possible - Travel Memoir), an international speaker, media spokesperson, appeared in the LinkedIn TV ad in 2021, and has published many blogs, vlogs and podcasts. In particular he livestreamed 'The Daily Sib' in the first months of the pandemic, interviewing a wide range of disabled people and disability ally's. Even 12 years after launching it continues to publish educational and entertaining information by disabled people, for disabled people. Srin Madipalli seems to have tried a bit of everything before turning his attention to building a startup. Fortunately all of the insights he'd picked up as a geneticist, lawyer, MBA and self-taught coder came in handy and he ultimately founded Accomable which he then sold to Airbnb. Since his departure from Airbnb he's focused his time on angel investing and mentoring startups. Today he shares some of the lessons he's learned along the way.

There was once a time when traveling with a disability was a daunting prospect. Srin Madipalli co-founded Accomable to create a database for disabled individuals to find and book the most accessible accommodation for their trips. Airbnb acquired Accomable in 2017, and Srin went on to work as Airbnb's product manager for in-home accessibility while holding accessibility workshops for hosts across the globe. Airbnb has since increased its focus on improving the accessibility of its products and working to address the problem of uninformed hosts. We sat down with Srin to talk about how an accessibility startup gets acquired, what his dream is at Airbnb and plotting the “accessible super city” of the future.
While earning his MBA at the University of Oxford's Said Business School and teaching himself to code, Srin Madipalli found himself compelled by the power of technology to transform the lives of people with disabilities. He soon co-founded Accomable, a web app that grew to list accessible accomodations in 60 countries around the world. In November of 2017, Accomable was acquired by Airbnb, and Madipalli joined Airbnb as its accessibility product and program manager. There, he has overseen the addition of new consumer-facing accessibility filters and features, while also exploring how Airbnb can make its hiring and management practices more inclusive for job candidates and employees living with disabilities. He describes how Accomable grew from a side-project into a fast-growing company that landed at Airbnb, and points out how focusing on accessibility can provide companies with a massive opportunity to engage with the disability community.

Our new co-host, Martyn takes the lead and interviews his friend and co-founder of Accomable, Srin Madipalli. Accomable was an accessible accommodation website that Martyn and Srin later on sold to Airbnb. Through late-night coding, angel investors, and many trans Atlantic flights; Srin pulled off the impossible. This episode is the first with our new format and new co-host. Martyn Sibley joins Xceptional leaders as our regular co-host so today we spend a few minutes getting to know him. He shares a bit about his background with Disability Horizons and Accomable and then he and Mai Ling tease the new format for the show.
Martyn is a man on a mission. A mission to make our society a more inclusive place to live. He's had to overcome major spinal fusion surgery, fundraise for vital mobility equipment, manage strangers to do his personal care, fight bouts of pneumonia, struggle through inaccessible housing, experience weird societal stereotypes, and many other barriers. He is the co-founder of Disability Horizons, a published author, podcast host, adventurer, government, business & charity adviser, and entrepreneur. He co-founded Accomable which was later acquired by Air BnB and is on a mission to travel and adventure to as many places on the planet as he can. He's a self confessed smiler with Spinal Muscular Atrophy .
Beyond companionship, another challenge facing older population is the loss of mobility and the ability to drive. A few years ago, Justin Boogaard started GoGoGrandparent to help older adults maintain their independence by accessing on-demand services like Uber & Lyft without a smart phone. As with many entrepreneurs in the longevity ecosystem, Justin started his journey with a personal story – of the need for an accessibility solution for his grandmother. Srin Madipalli, our guest in this Shades of Grey episode, started Accomable (acquired by Airbnb in 2017) to solve a personal challenge, and to raise the profile on the needs of the disabled. Arun Krishnakumar describes how he passed on Srin's funding request, only to find them acquired by Airbnb in a year's time. Theo, Arun and Srin discuss the reasons behind the founding of Accomable, the growth that it saw in the market, and how the acquisition came about. Srin is now a global ambassador for Airbnb, and travels the world shouting out the need for mobility. To be successful in today’s diverse society, accessibility cannot be an after thought. People with disabilities and physical ailments, or those who are illiterate, now have the means to obtain information, control smart home appliances, and engage with others outside their homes. The ability to bridge physical distance, or navigate the world via the digital highway – using one’s voice is simply empowering. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week we’re joined by Martyn Sibley, a serial entrepreneur, author and the co-founder and CEO of Disability Horizons, an online disability lifestyle magazine that aims to give people with disabilities a voice.Martyn is suffering from a condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a genetic condition that makes the muscles weaker and causes problems with movement. Experiencing both societal exclusion and a feeling of inferiority because of it hasn’t stopped him in any shape or form from achieving his life goals and dreams. From gaining a Masters degree in Economics and Marketing to working for a huge NGO, to becoming a successful entrepreneur, he has shown that with a right attitude and approach we can all become captains of our own destiny.Martyn started his career working for Scope, a disability equality charity. After several years, he felt that he is not reaching his full potential, so he decided to pursue and explore the entrepreneurial lifestyle. From his passion for helping others by sharing his experiences, an idea for an online magazine was born. He co-founded Disability Horizons back in 2011 and has been providing people with disabilities with valuable insights on the topics of technology, relationships, sports, employment, and travel ever since. In 2015 Martyn had co-founded Accomable, an online portal for accessible tourism which was subsequently acquired by Airbnb. He is also a published author, having released a book titled “Everything is Possible”, in 2016. After successfully funding the project through Kickstarter, Martyn shared his experiences from his travels around the world, hoping to provide others with energy and motivation on their path to self-actualization.Martyn also hosts his own podcast called “The Martyn Sibley Show” where he interviews influential and successful people, covering all aspects of life from politics to sport, from business to arts.It doesn’t really matter if he’s traveling across the far ends of the globe, blogging about his ideas and experiences, or even flying a plane, Martyn is on a path of inspiring others, regardless of whether they’re struggling with disability or not.Connect with Martyn:Twitter: https://twitter.com/martynsibleyTumblr: http://martynsibley.tumblr.com/Website: http://martynsibley.com/Becoming an Entrepreneur in the Face of Adversity“I’ve always been a dreamer and wanted the world to be a better place.” - Martyn SibleyDrawing inspiration from the great entrepreneurial minds of our days, naming Richard Branson as an example, Martyn has always felt deep inside him the desire to run his own business one day. With Disability Horizons, he has made his dreams into reality, providing people with disabilities with an abundance of interesting stories and articles, but more importantly, building a sense of community around his brand. While working at Scope, he gained relevant experience which would help him become a successful business owner he is today. But to be truly happy and achieve his full potential, he had to leave the sense of security coming from a steady 9 to 5 job, and dive deep into the oceans of entrepreneurial lifestyle where uncertainty and new challenges are an everyday theme.“I had this dread about getting up every morning and going to the same office. Sitting in the traffic in London, and stuck at my desk and being in all these meetings that didn’t feel kind of purposeful.“ - Martyn SibleyGetting into Blogging and Starting His Own Business“When I was a teenager, if someone was like 10, 20 years older, and was doing a load of cool stuff, it wouldn’t have mattered if I did exactly the same things, just to know it was possible would have been really, really powerful.” - Martyn SibleyAfter leaving Scope, Martyn started blogging about his experiences in order to give other people with disabilities an insight into what can be achieved in spite of adversity. The idea of being a living proof of what can be achieved with a right attitude was what kept him going. Over time he got more and more exposure in the media, all the while reaching a bigger audience with his message and building a solid foundation for his very own startup. At the moment, Disability Horizons has an amazing 50 000 readers per month, an audience predominantly consisting of people with disabilities and their families.“I’ve got this... like a calling, it felt... to share my personal story, and make them feel that the world is actually open and accessible. And even if it’s not open and accessible in a physical way all the time, there are still so many opportunities to go and grab.” - Martyn SibleyWorking on his magazine and interacting with his audience, Martyn acquired useful insight which led him to co-found Accomable, an accessible travel startup that helped people with disabilities find and book adapted holiday accommodation worldwide online. With their initial elevator pitch being “Airbnb for disabled people”, it is incredible to see things coming full circle with Airbnb actually acquiring Accommable two years later.A Message for EveryoneConsidering everything that’s happened in the past couple of years, Martyn has come to a realization that his true mission is to help everyone, and not just those with disabilities.“I’ve come to realize that I shouldn’t limit myself just to supporting disabled people… We’re still doing all that stuff for disabled people… But really building on it and using my experiences to help all people.” - Martyn SibleyHis new message, going beyond disability, is cemented in getting to know ourselves, building a community and striving for freedom. Martyn believes that in order to take charge of our lives we need to know and be aware of things that are most important to us.“If we understand what our beliefs are and check if they’re serving our true self, then we really can be the captain of our own destiny.” - Martyn SibleyThrough videos, podcasts, blogging, and social media, Martyn has created a community and essentially provided people with a place to witness and exchange experiences which lead to self-improvement.Finally, he also reflects on how freedom to do things we really want coming from being a business owner, is an important factor in his journey to change the world. Even though Martyn is fully aware that there are people who do not necessarily share this aspiration and find the employee life more suitable for their needs, his first-hand experience has made him cherish the freedom entrepreneurship brought to his life.“There’s definitely a lot around disability that instills entrepreneurial skills and knowledge in you. They’re the push factors.” - Martyn SibleyMartyn goes on to describe how living with a disability has affected him and pushed him to develop different skills which allowed him to become so successful in today’s business world. Having to fight against the stigma of disability which is widely spread through media, has made him more resilient and even more determined to help others.“We’re disabled by the barriers of society. We’re not disabled by the medical condition that we have. And so, instead of curing or fixing ourselves with the medical condition, it’s about society being more open and inclusive to difference.” - Martyn SibleyHe also credits his experiences with Mindvalley with playing an important part on his road to personal growth and self-improvement.What Does the Future Hold?Martyn is currently looking into producing an online course in which plans to unpack his ideas and teachings. He has spent a lot of time doing research and he is hoping that through developing his course, he will be able to convey his message in a slightly more structured way, which will allow him to educate people all over the world.“What matters is… what experiences you’ve had, what growth have you had and what impact you’ve made.” - Martyn Sibley See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
After headlines from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, Democracy Watch features an original audio documentary on Camp Cloud—the observation and resistance camp outside Kinder Morgan’s Tank Farm Facility on Burnaby Mountain. Reporters Alex de Boer and Zoe Power speak with Indigenous and settler activists at the camp and the nearby Coast Salish Watch House. The documentary observes the ongoing #ProtecttheInlet movement—an Indigenous lead coalition of environmental groups and activists intent on preventing Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. Democracy Watch then turns to an interview done by CiTR's Accessibility Collective. Collective members Dezy Nair and Deepi Leihl speak with founder and former CEO of Accomable, an online marketplace for people with disabilities and senior citizens. Accomable assists those with mobility issues in finding accessible accommodations when traveling and recently entered into a partnership with Airbnb. The show ends with an impromptu conversation with News Collective comrade Rehmatullah Sheikh about his ongoing reporting on a Heiltsuk language revitalization course.
We revisit our Access Economy segment to speak to Srin Madipalli, Former CEO of Accomable. Accomable is the “Airbnb for wheelchairs” and was recently acquired by Airbnb. After that we revisit one of our favorite interviews from the All Access Pass archives.
In this two part segment CiTR's Accessibility Collective looks at share companies (or 'access economies') and the recent ways in which accessibility has been brought the forefront of many enterprises' interests. We begin part one of this segment looking at Airbnb who recently acquired the accessible accommodations company Accomable. In the second half of this episode we will be calling Cory Lee from the popular travel blog Curb Free with Cory Lee.
