Last episode, I had Michelle Cooper on the podcast—and today, we're switching things up. This time, she had the idea to host the show and put me in the hot seat. She asked me questions about how I network and build connections. Whether it's business, podcasting, or everyday life—relationships matter. It's a fun one. In today's episode, we're diving into corporate America. Over the past several months, I've gained insight into corporations' operations—especially when hiring talent. Companies are taking meaningful steps by creating resources and systems that foster inclusion for employees with disabilities. My guest today is Michelle Cooper, who brings firsthand experience from the tech world. She's been deeply involved in inclusion and has much to share about what's working and what still needs to change. After a 33-year career in the Chemical and High-Tech industries, Michelle exited corporate America to embrace her purpose of helping others go further faster and achieve their full potential.Michelle closed her career at her former tech company as Vice President of Culture of Inclusion. Under her leadership, that company set the strategy and momentum for building a connected and courageous, inclusive culture for all. She developed a strong team and influenced many, leading inclusively and engaging everyone across the enterprise. She amplified diverse voices throughout her career and spent significant time coaching executives, employees, and teams. She was the founding president of one of the former company's first Women's Professional Development Network and continued her involvement in Employee Resource Groups throughout her career. Her new firm, The Mapp Co., provides professional coaching services for all. This new work is aligned with her values of authenticity, gratitude, inclusive leadership, and sharing her wisdom. In this episode of Off the Crutch, we're talking all things adapted fitness—why it matters, how it builds community, and what accessible fitness really looks like.In 2014, Jake Weiner founded ZOOZ Fitness in Los Angeles with a mission to help individuals with disabilities thrive physically, mentally, and socially. With a background in psychology, marketing, Judo, and personal training, Jake recognized a need for more inclusive fitness opportunities and set out to fill that gap. What started as personal training sessions in local parks with just the basics quickly grew into something bigger. Today, ZOOZ offers private, semi-private, and group classes in Woodland Hills, CA, and throughout the greater LA area, with plans to expand across California and beyond. On April 5th, there will be a Spartan Race at Dodger Stadium, so anyone in the LA area, please check it out. https://race.spartan.com/en/races/los-angeles-stadiumFollow ZOOZ Fitness @zoozfitness or go to zoozfitness.comSend us a textFollow me on social media at @offthecrutch, or e-mail me at offthecrutch@gmail.com
I had the honor to chat with SXSW President and Chief Programming Officer Hugh Forrest to explore how one of the world's most influential festivals continues to lead with connection, resilience, and innovation. We discuss how SXSW has evolved, how accessibility and inclusion are prioritized, and what it takes to create space for diverse voices in tech, media, and culture. As someone who attended panels focused on happiness, resilience, and branding, this experience was very personal—and a reminder that when we show up with purpose, the right doors open.Check out http://sxsw.com to learn more about the festival.Send us a textFollow me on social media at @offthecrutch, or e-mail me at offthecrutch@gmail.com

Send us a Text Message.Something I enjoy regularly is giving talks to physical therapy students about cerebral palsy. In today's episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing three physical therapy students in a class I spoke in last year. This episode is unique because all four of us, Aly West, Cameron Samrai, and Dillon Werner, were together in one room. We had an hour-long conversation that included their reflections on that class, questions about cerebral palsy, and my honest views on how physical therapy impacts me.I also wanted to let you know that this month, I've been involved in a fundraising campaign for United Cerebral Palsy, a national non-profit that provides services and programs to individuals with disabilities. Week two in Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month is here. This month also belongs to those with developmental disabilities. Because of that, my guest is Kayla Scheer, whom I met during my time in TEDx.In 2012, Kayla Scheer married her high school sweetheart and earned her BA in Secondary Education and Spanish with a concentration in Bilingual Education from UNM. Then, in 2014, she earned her MA in Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences from UNM and gave a TEDxED Talk titled “On-Demand Learning in the 21st Century Classroom”. This is Kayla’s ninth year as an educator, spending most of her time as a Spanish teacher at V. Sue Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, she is now a Language and Culture Coordinator at Shining Stars Preschool. The switch to preschool has been a blessing for her as a mother of two beautiful little girls, one with red hair and the other an extra 21st chromosome. Every day is fun and full of sparkles. I hope that Kayla's story can help parents who have a child with a disability.Cerebral Palsy Foundationhttps://www.yourcpf.org/Follow me on social media @offthecrutchpod or e-mail me at offthecrutch@gmail.com

Happy New Year, everyone! After a two-week holiday break, I wanted to start off 2021 with a bang. What better way than to have a prominent state figure and servant leader in my hometown. As State Auditor, Brian is committed to bringing awareness to the important work of the office that uncovers fraud, waste, and abuse in agencies and entities statewide. The first in his family to go to college, Brian received his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from New Mexico State University and later earned his law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law.
