Martyn works at the intersection of business, technology and leadership to drive change for a fully inclusive world. Starting one of the first lived experience blogs in 2009, he's created high quality content, built online communities and started multiple businesses. Growing up with a physical disability, he's faced many personal challenges, and successfully chased down many dreams! From working in London, to driving a car with his hands, scuba diving, and being engaged to his soul mate. His mantra is 'Everything is possible'! After gaining a degree in economics and a master's in marketing, Martyn started his career at a charity for disability rights. Following his love of blogging and social media, he quickly became a disabled influencer (regularly appearing in the UK's disability power 100 list), plus working in media and tourism for social change. He's a published author (Everything is Possible - Travel Memoir), an international speaker, media spokesperson, appeared in the LinkedIn TV ad in 2021, and has published many blogs, vlogs and podcasts. In particular he livestreamed 'The Daily Sib' in the first months of the pandemic, interviewing a wide range of disabled people and disability ally's. Disability Horizons was the first disability magazine to utilise online content and social media. Created alongside his friend Srin Madipalli, its given a voice to disabled people like never before. Even 12 years after launching it continues to publish educational and entertaining information by disabled people, for disabled people. Accomable, also co-founded with Srin, disrupted the accessible accommodation industry and was acquired by Airbnb in 2017. Most recently in partnership with the Goat agency (global leaders in influencer marketing) Martyn started the award winning Purple Goat agency. This week, Mik and Zec are talking about a subject that simply cannot be ignored. Again the energy price 'cap' has increased and if it wasn't bad enough already, things have got a lot worse, you might even say they are deadly! The show did get a tad political, and it was not a balanced opinion, but we are teetering on the edge of a crisis that will cost lives and there is only one way to point the finger of blame! In this episode, I talk with the lovely Martin Warrillow, who is a podcast host, blog writer, public speaker, former journalist, and stroke survivor. Martin educates people about the dangers of work stress and the increasing incidence of stroke among working-age people. We have an inspiring conversation about resilience, overcoming difficulties, and the sex life of a stroke survivor. Martin shared details of his accident, the physical and mental recovery process, and how his sex life changed. We also talk about the possibilities of sex beyond penetration, how hard it is being a sexual partner and a carer at the same time, and Martin's iron mindset that helped him keep moving forward. What You Will Learn In This Episode: - Martin Warrillow's inspiring story of resilience and bravery - What are the challenges that spouses of stroke survivors deal with in their sex life - How Martin managed to adapt his sex life to his new reality After the accident that caused erectile dysfunction, among other physical issues, Martin focused on the things he could do, instead of those he couldn't. Looking at sex differently opened several possibilities for Martin and his wife, that they happily explored and learned to master and enjoy. We all like to think that discrimination is something we all avoid and that inclusion is the one thing that is non-negotiable. But are we really doing this or just simply paying lip service to it? Are we actually afraid of being seen as exploitative or insensitive by simply doing what we think is right? Let’s see what we need to consider when doing what is right and inclusive with Martyn Sibley. Martyn is the founder of Disability Horizons and Purple Goat Agency, both of which focus on the needs and wants of the disabled community from both a commercial perspective and as individuals. As Marytn describes himself, he’s ‘just a regular guy who happens to have a disability (called Spinal Muscular Atrophy – SMA)’. Being a regular guy means not only running an agency and an online disability lifestyle publication, but going skiing, scuba diving, flying a plane – but that’s the boring normal stuff isn’t it. Let’s get back that marketing thingy. In this episode we cover; - Planning for inclusiveness with our marketing - How to say the ‘right’ thing - Getting your voice heard over all the rubbish Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/enIASKSUbK8 Takeaways Top Tip Look to make products and services that include everyone. Using a universal design approach not only means you are following the basics of Inclusion Marketing, but this usually means looking for simplicity and ease of use which in turn can reduce friction, which we all want less of. A great example of this is Siri. Favourite Quote When Martyn was discussing getting your voice heard in a crowded market he believes that ‘everything you need is there…. it’s just the action, it’s the doing’ And Finally, the Most Important Takeaway from this Episode When looking to create awareness within your marketplace. Remember Martyn’s three stages to success; 1 – Tell your story 2 – Build a community 3 – Have a strong call to action Music Featured on this Podcast: Sleepy in the Garden Lobo Loco www.musikbrause.de Creative Commons License

This situation the world is facing with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) is unlike anything we’ve seen for a 100 years. In just a few months, it has put the entire world economy on pause as hundreds of thousands of people test positive for this deadly disease. What does this mean for stroke survivors? Are we at higher risk? Neuro-Physiatrist Dr. Kim Middleton joins us to answer that question and more in this episode of Strokecast. Bio Dr. Kimberly Middleton completed medical school at the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine before doing her residency at the University of Washington. She is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR). Dr. Middleton was one of the doctors who cared for me during the month I lived at the hospital following my stroke. I continue to see her on a regular basis for my Botox/Dysport injections to treat my tone and spasticity. You can learn more about Dr. Middleton’s background here: https://www.swedish.org/swedish-physicians/profile.aspx?name=kimberley+w+middleton&id=160439 10 Tips to Protect Yourself From COVID-19 Wash your hands again. Yes, again. Don’t touch your face. Continue taking your meds. Practice physical social distancing, but continue to connect online. Disinfect your home and deliveries you receive. Cleaning is good home OT. Eat healthful meals to keep your nutrition up. Consider taking supplements like vitamin C. Keep your body strong with exercise. Prioritize sleep. Go deep into that home exercise program your PT or OT gave you. Handwashing One Handed Washing our hands is the cheapest and probably most effective way to minimize the chances of catching COVID-19 and hundreds of other conditions. But how do you do it effectively when hemiparesis leaves you with one functional hand? One way is to use your unaffected hand to wash your affected one. Sure, that one’s probably not as dirty since it’s mainly been hanging around as just a fist, but the act of washing it will wash and scrub the washer. Plus it’s a great opportunity to get some more finger stretches in. Here are some examples of other techniques. Are you a dreamer with an urge to make that dream a reality for the good of all? Are you a social entrepreneur struggling to get started? That's what this week's episode is about: People working for social good, with a mission and their aim is all about trying to make the world better. Sounds grandiose? Martyn shows us that it doesn't have to be, and explains the top struggles of world changers. If you didn't listen to the first episode with Martyn, you might want to do so: it's here. "World changers" is going to be a way of making a much bigger impact by empowering leaders. On changing the world, the danger of perfection, taking care of the gold goose, having a dream, and acting on it... In this episode, you will learn about: * What is a world changer? * Being a little bit better everyday, consistently, that builds up in something quite meaningful after all, but without all the pressure and grandiosity.* "A world changer is [ anyone ] working for social good. Their mission and their aim is all about trying to make the world better." [2:07] * Perfectionism is often what stops most people from starting: "When we want to do it so perfectly, that is definitely when we get paralyzed by the fear."[4:00]* The balance between supporting change on an individual level AND on a broader social level, and scaling our impact! [6:14] The top struggles of World changers: time, energy, money. * Being OK with earning money while working on social causes. [13:47]* Finding work / life balance when you self-entrepreneur and especially when you're passion driven, and working doesn't feel like working. [16:39]* The importance of taking care of yourself first: you're the golden goose. [19:23] * How to navigate the urge to save the world! You need passion and purpose, AND processes: keeping in mind our priorities can be difficult when you're a world changer, as everything is important and urgent. [20:33]* If I am going to found a social enterprise, should I found an NGO or a "for-profit" company? Money — or should I say, money-mindset — is definitely one of the biggest struggles of world changers! [23:04]* Martyn's number one advice for world changers: blocking the noise that is claiming your attention and is not supporting your goals, so you find calm and concentrate on what is important. Clarity, impact, and freedom will come naturally from that state. [28:02]* The process of creating the 6 weeks course "How to change the world", and what it is about. [29:37] Who is Martyn Sibley My guest today is just a regular guy... who happens to have a disability called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This means he cannot walk, lift anything heavier than a book or shower himself.AND... he is a living proof of "everything is possible", which happens to be the tittle of his book. He co founded and runs his company Disability Horizons, has a Degree in Economics & a Masters in Marketing, has presented for the BBC. He is also a blogger, and a speaker to bring awareness on disability. He drives his own adapted car, and loves adventure travels; he has flown a plane, enjoyed skiing & SCUBA diving, flying in a balloon, and he's been on the moon. (OK, not on the moon yet; but I'm sure that by the next time he comes here, that will be done.) In 2018, he started a project for empowering "world changers". He now offers also a 6 weeks online course helping you getting started on this journey, helping you gaining clarity, impact, and freedom.
In this episode of Have Disability, Will Travel we speak with the world-changer himself, Martyn Sibley. Martyn Sibley is a regular guy who happens to have a disability called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This means he cannot walk, lift anything heavier than a book or shower himself. He has experienced both societal exclusion and a feeling of inferiority. Through personal development and social entrepreneurship, he has achieved many of his personal and professional goals:He co founded and runs his company Disability Horizons, published a book: 'Everything is Possible', has a Degree in Economics & a Masters in Marketing, has presented for the BBC.He is also a blogger, and a speaker to bring awareness on disability. He drives his own adapted car, and loves adventure travels; he has flown a plane, enjoyed skiing & SCUBA diving, flying in a balloon, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn he's gone to Mars one day. There doesn't seem to be a limit to what he can do, and he really lives up to the title of his book: "everything is possible". And most of all, he has one of the most genuine smiles I've ever come across. And I know it can sound cheesy, but really, it struck me as something special about him: when we were in Tallinn for a few weeks at Mindvalley university, every single time I saw him, not only was he smiling, but just looking at him, I could feel this joy of being alive. On living in a world without barriers, prejudice or discrimination; about joy, living purposefully, speaking out taboos... * [2:16] Titles like "word changer" automatically sounds grandiose, yet Martyn really is one: He shares what was his inspiration and journey to get there. How he had to balance dreaming big, and facing the challenges of the daily life. How his disability naturally led him to develop an entrepreneur mindset: Martyn had to manage a team of carer, from the day he went to university.* [5:32] When he decided to travel, he wanted to hit the big challenge first. He went to pretty much the other side of the world: Australia as a first trip. And again this trip (and the many others that followed) had to be prepared like a project, with his team. This lead to the idea of founding a website like Airbnb for disabled people, which was sold to Airbnb last year... From a personal need to sharing with the community.* [10:00] "In the end, if you stick to it and you find a way, everything is possible." When we change the questions: From "can I do that?" to "How can I do that?". Setting an intention is the key:"When ideas tickle at you and keep tickling, you have to do it."* [13:17] When our situation is not in the norm, we face the challenge of being defined by our circumstance & situation. "Having a disability feels like an eternal venture of educating people. Many people who haven’t come into contact with disability, have rather strange preconceptions of what my life is like." Martyn resisted working in the disability area; it sounded like a cliche, and he didn't want to be totally defined by being disabled. Then he realized: "It's my strength or superpower. My message to the world is made through that journey, and why would I want to hold that back from people?"* [20:08] Being able to talk about everything without taboo makes it possible to find solutions. "I definitely still have abundance blocks, because I never thought when I was growing up I would be able to do certain things, because of the way the media and society generally talk about disability.""There's a lot of interesting dynamic around the topics of taboo, both from what the community needs or say, what the media say, and even what I kind of know I should be saying but I'm a little scared to say myself." Openness, even clumsy (any drunken honesty episode coming to mind, anyone?), is always preferable to silence and awkwardness: "The minute someone asks a question, or says something that is kind of incorrect, then you've got the possibility to educate, with kindness and love.
This week we’re joined by Martyn Sibley, a serial entrepreneur, author and the co-founder and CEO of Disability Horizons, an online disability lifestyle magazine that aims to give people with disabilities a voice.Martyn is suffering from a condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a genetic condition that makes the muscles weaker and causes problems with movement. Experiencing both societal exclusion and a feeling of inferiority because of it hasn’t stopped him in any shape or form from achieving his life goals and dreams. From gaining a Masters degree in Economics and Marketing to working for a huge NGO, to becoming a successful entrepreneur, he has shown that with a right attitude and approach we can all become captains of our own destiny.Martyn started his career working for Scope, a disability equality charity. After several years, he felt that he is not reaching his full potential, so he decided to pursue and explore the entrepreneurial lifestyle. From his passion for helping others by sharing his experiences, an idea for an online magazine was born. He co-founded Disability Horizons back in 2011 and has been providing people with disabilities with valuable insights on the topics of technology, relationships, sports, employment, and travel ever since. In 2015 Martyn had co-founded Accomable, an online portal for accessible tourism which was subsequently acquired by Airbnb. He is also a published author, having released a book titled “Everything is Possible”, in 2016. After successfully funding the project through Kickstarter, Martyn shared his experiences from his travels around the world, hoping to provide others with energy and motivation on their path to self-actualization.Martyn also hosts his own podcast called “The Martyn Sibley Show” where he interviews influential and successful people, covering all aspects of life from politics to sport, from business to arts.It doesn’t really matter if he’s traveling across the far ends of the globe, blogging about his ideas and experiences, or even flying a plane, Martyn is on a path of inspiring others, regardless of whether they’re struggling with disability or not.Connect with Martyn:Twitter: https://twitter.com/martynsibleyTumblr: http://martynsibley.tumblr.com/Website: http://martynsibley.com/Becoming an Entrepreneur in the Face of Adversity“I’ve always been a dreamer and wanted the world to be a better place.” - Martyn SibleyDrawing inspiration from the great entrepreneurial minds of our days, naming Richard Branson as an example, Martyn has always felt deep inside him the desire to run his own business one day. With Disability Horizons, he has made his dreams into reality, providing people with disabilities with an abundance of interesting stories and articles, but more importantly, building a sense of community around his brand. While working at Scope, he gained relevant experience which would help him become a successful business owner he is today. But to be truly happy and achieve his full potential, he had to leave the sense of security coming from a steady 9 to 5 job, and dive deep into the oceans of entrepreneurial lifestyle where uncertainty and new challenges are an everyday theme.“I had this dread about getting up every morning and going to the same office. Sitting in the traffic in London, and stuck at my desk and being in all these meetings that didn’t feel kind of purposeful.“ - Martyn SibleyGetting into Blogging and Starting His Own Business“When I was a teenager, if someone was like 10, 20 years older, and was doing a load of cool stuff, it wouldn’t have mattered if I did exactly the same things, just to know it was possible would have been really, really powerful.” - Martyn SibleyAfter leaving Scope, Martyn started blogging about his experiences in order to give other people with disabilities an insight into what can be achieved in spite of adversity. The idea of being a living proof of what can be achieved with a right attitude was what kept him going. Over time he got more and more exposure in the media, all the while reaching a bigger audience with his message and building a solid foundation for his very own startup. At the moment, Disability Horizons has an amazing 50 000 readers per month, an audience predominantly consisting of people with disabilities and their families.“I’ve got this... like a calling, it felt... to share my personal story, and make them feel that the world is actually open and accessible. And even if it’s not open and accessible in a physical way all the time, there are still so many opportunities to go and grab.” - Martyn SibleyWorking on his magazine and interacting with his audience, Martyn acquired useful insight which led him to co-found Accomable, an accessible travel startup that helped people with disabilities find and book adapted holiday accommodation worldwide online. With their initial elevator pitch being “Airbnb for disabled people”, it is incredible to see things coming full circle with Airbnb actually acquiring Accommable two years later.A Message for EveryoneConsidering everything that’s happened in the past couple of years, Martyn has come to a realization that his true mission is to help everyone, and not just those with disabilities.“I’ve come to realize that I shouldn’t limit myself just to supporting disabled people… We’re still doing all that stuff for disabled people… But really building on it and using my experiences to help all people.” - Martyn SibleyHis new message, going beyond disability, is cemented in getting to know ourselves, building a community and striving for freedom. Martyn believes that in order to take charge of our lives we need to know and be aware of things that are most important to us.“If we understand what our beliefs are and check if they’re serving our true self, then we really can be the captain of our own destiny.” - Martyn SibleyThrough videos, podcasts, blogging, and social media, Martyn has created a community and essentially provided people with a place to witness and exchange experiences which lead to self-improvement.Finally, he also reflects on how freedom to do things we really want coming from being a business owner, is an important factor in his journey to change the world. Even though Martyn is fully aware that there are people who do not necessarily share this aspiration and find the employee life more suitable for their needs, his first-hand experience has made him cherish the freedom entrepreneurship brought to his life.“There’s definitely a lot around disability that instills entrepreneurial skills and knowledge in you. They’re the push factors.” - Martyn SibleyMartyn goes on to describe how living with a disability has affected him and pushed him to develop different skills which allowed him to become so successful in today’s business world. Having to fight against the stigma of disability which is widely spread through media, has made him more resilient and even more determined to help others.“We’re disabled by the barriers of society. We’re not disabled by the medical condition that we have. And so, instead of curing or fixing ourselves with the medical condition, it’s about society being more open and inclusive to difference.” - Martyn SibleyHe also credits his experiences with Mindvalley with playing an important part on his road to personal growth and self-improvement.What Does the Future Hold?Martyn is currently looking into producing an online course in which plans to unpack his ideas and teachings. He has spent a lot of time doing research and he is hoping that through developing his course, he will be able to convey his message in a slightly more structured way, which will allow him to educate people all over the world.“What matters is… what experiences you’ve had, what growth have you had and what impact you’ve made.” - Martyn Sibley See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
