For many of us, this time of year is filled with joyful celebrations and creating wonderful memories with friends and family. And for many of us, this time of year can actually be a difficult and stressful time.Maybe it's the first holiday season after the loss of someone you love, or maybe you simply feel stressed about the hectic pace that often surrounds the holidays or the pressure of meeting others' expectations of what our families or celebrations "should" look like in order to make it the most perfect holiday ever. This week's guest on the Cracking Open podcast has every reason to feel stressed around the holidays and yet she has made the conscious choice to no longer live her life according to the "shoulds". Instead, she has bravely decided that speaking the truth and following her own heart is how she is going to heal and live the life that is right for her.Casey Hammer is the granddaughter of Dr. Armand Hammer, renowned industrialist and philanthropist, and the aunt of the famous actor Armie Hammer, known for his role in critically acclaimed and blockbuster movies such as Call Me By Your Name and The Social Network.Casey blew the lid off of multi-generational shocking family secrets when she released her tell-all autobiography, Surviving My Birthright, in 2015. After remaining silent for much of her life about the abuse and unimaginable trauma that she endured at the hands of her own family, she knew that the only path to healing was through speaking up and speaking out.Since the release of her book, Casey's story has also been featured in Vanity Fair's May 2021 issue, The Rise and Fall of the House of Hammer, as well as the 2022 Discovery+ and HBO MAX docuseries The House of Hammer.Throughout her life, Casey witnessed her wealthy and famous family thrive on being “perfect on the outside and twisted on the inside”, as she writes in her book. She is with us today to courageously share her story with the hope that it will help other abuse victims heal and know that they are not alone. Casey believes her purpose is to empower other survivors of abuse by bringing awareness around consent, accountability, and speaking your truth no matter how hard or messy it might be. She has continued her own healing journey by becoming an advocate for abuse survivors to help empower others in their own healing process.Casey is proof that the advantages of wealth and privilege do not protect someone from being subjected to a minefield of trauma and strife. And yet, she is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and our ability to rise like a phoenix from the ashes and gift the world with the wisdom of our experiences.A true case for the wounded healer, Casey has turned her pain into power, her trauma into healing, and her secrets into truth. May Casey's story inspire you to do the same in your own life.Love,MollyTrigger Warning: this episode contains conversations about abuse, domestic violence, suicide, and drug use. Tread Perilously starts a month of modern sci-fi and fantasy that either aired on Syfy or should have with The Watch episode "The Dark in the Dark." As the Assassins Guild and Thieves Guild continue their merger, Vimes becomes aware of the other artifacts the guilds need to complete their ritual. He dispatches Cheery, Angua, and Carrot to collect the Crown while he and Lady Ramkin hold the line at the Watch House. Will it be enough to withstand the attack of assassins and thieves? Also, will Cheery be able to reconcile her past within the mines and face The Dark in the Dark? Justin and Erik discuss the controversy surrounding the show and whether or not it maintains the spirit of Discworld author Terry Pratchett. They also discuss other fantasy shows, naturally enough, and the difficulty in bringing such stories to the screen. Other topics include how terrible a title "The Watch" is in the age of internet search, A Song of Ice and Fire characters who did not make it television, and interpretations of the Cheery metaphor. Erik once again admits he started Guards, Guards, but life got in the way of his finishing it. Justin's status as a Pratchett superfan definitely colors his views and both doubt the show's choice to let Carrot know about his destiny.

We watched House of 1000 Corpses and were impressed by the use of stock footage and new footage made to look like fucked out stock footage. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. https://youtu.be/OiRQOpC0nhg Synopsis House of 1000 Corpses is the story of some 20 somethings on a road trip around the US on a mission to find gas station oddities and fright museums. They stumble upon Captain Spaulding's museum of monsters and madmen and end up flies in the web of the firefly family. The firefly family are a group of twisted, backwater Texans who torture and kill unsuspecting kids on outings in their car. The kids are treated to the extensive horrors around the firefly family property before they are picked off one by one. If this sounds like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre ripoff, that's because it is. Had it been made with the tiniest bit of skill or nuance, it might have been able to get away with being called an homage or a tribute, but alas, ripoff will have to do. Review House of 1000 Corpses is quite a sideshow. It's the first of writer / director Rob Zombie's feature films, and the start of an obsession for the musician. It seems like Rob saw films like Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, and Salem's Lot, as a child and wondered to himself, “What goes on in the parts of these movies that I don't get to see? Why is Michael the way he is? What other weird things happen in the Cannibal's house?” And he had to create the lore that he so desperately desired to see. To be fair, those are awesome questions. Who wouldn't want to see what happens in Texas Chainsaw the day after the massacre? As it turns out, the answer is me. I don't care about the reality behind the mysteries being shown to me nearly as much as I enjoy being allowed to let my mind wander around those creepy questions. Once you answer the question of why Michael is the way he is, I hate the outcome. Watch House of 1000 CorpsesBuy or Rent on AmazonClick Here to Watch Apart from this fundamental issue with digging up and rehashing old movies that are arguably the best of their kind ever made, the House of 1000 Corpses is a trainwreck. It's Americana turned up to 11 and drenched in neon gas station colors, and it smells like the armpit of the oldest, nastiest man you've ever sat next to on the bus. The acting is pitiable as soon as Sheri Moon shows up and awesome when old pro's like Sid Haig grace the screen. The story is tenuous and boring, the violence is schlocky, the comedy is raunchy. It's not my cup of tea, but for what it is, it's pretty influential. Some would say that it was one of the most over-the-top entries in the gore-porn genre of the 2000's. I would disagree with those people, but still. Anyone sitting down to watch a movie called House of 1000 Corpses will get exactly what they were expecting, that much is certain. Score 2/10

“Darling…the only ghoul in this house is you.” – Annabelle LorenWelcome to the party on Haunted Hill, where the ghost stories aren't made up, and the grudges do matter. Frederick Loren is hosting a gathering where all the guests get to walk away with ten thousand dollars apiece…assuming they survive the night in a horribly haunted house. Not enough of a twist, you say? Your favorite podcasters agree. As it turns out, the ghosts (and one random werewolf) might not be the most dangerous inhabitants of the House on Haunted Hill. This William Castle classic begs the question: Would it be more fun to be murdered by an eccentric, mustachioed millionaire, or his cheating, smokin' hot spouse? We suppose that comes down to your own kinky preference, but let's all agree that disintegrating in a vat of acid would be absolutely zero fun. No bones about it. Darth will see herself out for that joke…unless Vincent Price has locked her in. Join Darth, Adam, and Jason for their first Halloween episode of the season, House on Haunted Hill! Hosted on Acast. We watched House of Wax starring Elisha Cuthbert, Paris Hilton, and Robert Ri'chard (from Cousin Skeeter) and were treated to a fairly decent bit of gore porn. This was a patreon pick, so if you ever get the idea to recommend we review a movie, head over to our patreon and see all the goodies we offer to our most loyal of fans! (1:15) – Intro(9:15) – Synopsis(10:15) – Review(18:15) – Score(24:15) – Spoilers(1:05:45) – Bad Reviews for Good Movies @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. https://youtu.be/Q-Akt68SGfE Synopsis House of Wax is based on a pretty simple premise and is a loose remake of the 1953 film of the same name. A group of fun-loving but angsty teens find themselves stranded in the woods near a strange, small community which seems to center itself around a wax museum. As the teens split up and try to find help in this sleepy community everyone seems to realize that the inhabitants aren't as lively as they once thought In the end, everyone gets more wax than they bargained for. Review House of Wax is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra who also directed Orphan, The Shallows, and is in the middle of directing the upcoming Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson. House of Wax was his directorial debut and is pretty good, all things considered. This effort is clearly inspired by early 2000's exploitation gore/slashers like Saw and Wrong Turn. Throwing Paris Hilton into the mix gave this movie a huge amount of momentum at the time because just like candle wax - “that's hot”. Unfortunately, House of Wax has a seemingly unlimited supply of rope to hang itself with. There is a tremendous amount of extraneous details that force us to wade through this 113 minute slog with no real rhyme or reason behind their inclusion. Watch House of Wax (2005)Watch on AmazonClick here to Buy or Rent Backstory and character development that doesn't seem to matter. Character inclusion that is wholly unnecessary. Even chase sequences that are out of nowhere. If the movie were a bit tighter I would be impressed with it, especially after considering the ending payout, which is impressive to say the least. Ultimately, House of Wax was a decently fun movie that shot itself in the foot with the inclusion of a ton of extraneous content. Even so, the ending makes it worth the wait. But since its final report 30 years ago, the proportion of the prison population who are Indigenous has doubled from about 14 per cent to almost 30 per cent.

Charlotte Dougall is a digital marketer, blogger and airport documentary enthusiast usually found in Glasgow, but currently driving everyone back home wild with jealousy with her Instagram stories on holiday in Mexico. Never one to shy away from a project, Charlotte started her blog-focussed “passion project”, Blog and Beyond, in 2017, as an inclusive online community by bloggers, for bloggers and a way to offer top tips, advice and support from a network of like-minded bloggers, as well as through real-world events. In March, after a month-long UK-wide workshop series, Charlotte announced that she was calling time on the project, although it still lives on as a Facebook community. Writing about her decision in a blog post she titled “learning from failure” (https://www.bycharlotteann.com/2019/04/learning-from-failure/), she spoke about how Blog and Beyond had become “too much effort for too little in return”, and how she had got to the stage where she was “just so exhausted that it was making [her] miserable”. And from one over-achiever with high functioning anxiety to another, I knew I had to get her on the podcast to talk about her decision, what she learned, and when she knew it was time to call it quits. Find Charlotte online at bycharlotteann.com and bletherdigital.com. I'm at lastyearsgirl.pixlet.net, where you can also find full show notes as well as submit your own question.
We were frankly shocked when HoC dropped it's 6th season -- WTF happened over there?! We get pretty in deep about the legacy of House of Cards and our own personal attachment to the series... then we decide on Season 6.

South Carolina’s first police station was a brick “Watch House” constructed around 1701 at the intersection of Broad and East Bay Streets in Charleston. Built to shelter both the town’s nocturnal watchmen and the lawbreakers they caught on the streets at night, the Watch House was once a vital part of daily life in early Charleston.

A group of Windermere high school students went on a field trip to visit the pipeline protest site in Burnaby near Forest Grove Elementary, also known as "The Watch House and Camp Cloud." In this IMCO, Jonathan explains why he agrees with one of the political commentators' statements. Enjoy!

After headlines from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, Democracy Watch features an original audio documentary on Camp Cloud—the observation and resistance camp outside Kinder Morgan’s Tank Farm Facility on Burnaby Mountain. Reporters Alex de Boer and Zoe Power speak with Indigenous and settler activists at the camp and the nearby Coast Salish Watch House. The documentary observes the ongoing #ProtecttheInlet movement—an Indigenous lead coalition of environmental groups and activists intent on preventing Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. Democracy Watch then turns to an interview done by CiTR's Accessibility Collective. Collective members Dezy Nair and Deepi Leihl speak with founder and former CEO of Accomable, an online marketplace for people with disabilities and senior citizens. Accomable assists those with mobility issues in finding accessible accommodations when traveling and recently entered into a partnership with Airbnb. The show ends with an impromptu conversation with News Collective comrade Rehmatullah Sheikh about his ongoing reporting on a Heiltsuk language revitalization course.
Climate Campaigner Peter McCartney is on the ground at the Kwekwecnewtxw, which translates to "a place to watch from." A Watch House is a traditional structure of the Coast Salish people that has been used for tens of thousands of years to watch for enemies on their territories. Peter talks to Will George, a member of Tsleil-Waututh Nation, about the protests taking place at the Kinder Morgan Westridge Marine Terminal.

Hollywood stepped up and paid Robin Wright the same as her costar Kevin Spacey. Are their roles equal or did Hollywood fall prey to public scrutiny. We debate. And why is medical marijuana still out of bounds for pro football players. Plus how radio gets its ratings and who is making big bucks to participate.
The music writer Laura Barton visits four corners of Britain and listens closely to the music found in different landscapes. In this first episode, Laura visits parts of the rugged countryside of Northumberland and the coastal city of Sunderland on Tyne and Wear to explore how music and landscape are intimately related. In an environment defined by a beautiful coastline and great northern rivers, Kathryn Tickell, the violinist and Northumbrian piper, and Adrian McNally of the folk group The Unthanks share their experiences of performing and arranging traditional tunes that seem to have emerged from the sea and been hewn from the soil. Members of the Sunderland band Frankie and the Heartstrings take Laura on a tour of the shop they established in the heart of the old industrial city to sell coffee, artworks and records, as well as to provide a rehearsal and gig space. They also perform acoustically in the famous Watch House, from which volunteer lifeboatmen would keep an eye on the Roker seashore. And Peter Brewis of Field Music, based in a former industrial unit on the banks of the River Wear, tells Laura about the distinctive accents of music from this part of the North-East. Produced by Alan Hall A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 4.

Myles and James The League of NerdsAbout Myles. For those of you who are just tuning in, my name is Myles Power and I run the educational YouTube channel powerm1985. I am originally from a small town in the North East of England called Middlesbrough, but have spend a large potion of my adult life living in Manchester. I am a chemist who is is currently working in industry, but what little free time I have I spend sharing my love of SCIENCE! through home experiments, visiting sites of scientific interest and angry rants at pseudoscience opponents. I studied chemistry specialising in organic chemistry at the University of Manchester and Toronto. Later in my career, I moved more towards bio-chemistry and worked on projects including the synthesising various nucleic acid analogues for non-enzymatic transcription and controlling gene expression using a mutant riboswitch. I have over 7 years of experience working in a research lab, which has given me the skills I need to research and debunk virus psuedoscience theories. Some of the theories I have discussed on my YouTube channel including AIDS denialists, 911 truthers, the anti-vaccination movement and homeopathy to name a few.https://www.youtube.com/user/powerm1985About James.James is a microbiologist who specialises in evolutionary microbiology.
