New research has found rising profits have contributed to over half of domestic inflation in New Zealand during the cost of living crisis, according to a new report by FIRST Union, the Council of Trade Unions and lobby group Action Station. It argues that contrary to the public narrative, rising wages are only responsible for less than a third of domestic inflation, over the 18 months to December last year. The report says corporations seized the opportunity to increase their profit margins off the back of major struggles; most notably the Covid-19 pandemic, and severe weather events like Cyclone Gabrielle. Kathryn speaks with Edward Miller, a researcher and policy analyst at FIRST Union. In an earlier report published last year, he calculated that corporate profits spiked by 39 per cent in the year to March 2022, which he described as "the biggest increase ever seen".

I was born in Puerto Rico. One of the last “official” colonies on earth. I know something about the taste and smell of empire. Today all of humanity is still contending with the reverberations of 500 hundreds years of European imperialism. The indigenous people of the world have a lot to teach us about the genocidal impacts of colonization and about what it will take to decolonize ourselves. Because most of us, indigenous our not, remain colonized by a spell. A spell that tells us that to be human is to stand alone, to extract, consume and accumulate, to be afraid of each other and to confuse economic growth with the developmental growth of our very souls. Here is a conversation with Kassier Heartendorp. One among the Maori people that are successfully participating in the decolonization of New Zealand. Kassie is the Director of Action Station, an independent, crowdfunded, community campaigning organization in her native land. They speak of their mission as: “To tautoko (support) and whakamana (uplift) everyday New Zealanders to act together in powerful and coordinated ways to create what we cannot achieve on our own: a society, economy and democracy that serves all of us - everyday people and Papatūānuku, the planet we love.” Kassie has an audacious intellect and a generous heart. Every time we speak it feels like we sync into a deep, authentic, generative space that must be what happens when we live life with intention. You will find this an inspiring and relevant conversation. Decolonization is not only possible. It is actually happening. It leaves me with a sense of hope and possibility. Kassie holds something that is essential for more of us to learn and remember. I encourage you to listen.

A woman who set up a petition to make Matariki a public holiday says it will be a chance for all New Zealand to learn about indigenous science and spirituality. The Labour Party announced yesterday it would make Matariki a public holiday if it is re-elected in October. An exact date hasn't been nailed down, but the public holiday celebrating the start of the Maori New Year would always fall on a Monday or a Friday Labour leader Jacinda Ardern said the new holiday would first be implemented in 2022, to give employers time to prepare. Action Station director Laura O'Connell Rapira set up a petition urging the government to make Matariki a holiday in May. It has received nearly 35,000 signatures since then. She told Morning Report Matariki had been gaining popularity recently. [audio_play] "There's been a sort of resurgence of Matariki and the maramataka, which is Māori lunar calendar over the last 20 years." O'Connell Rapira said it would be NZ's first indigenous public holiday if it were put in place. New Zealand has fewer public holidays than 18 OECD countries, according to O'Connell Rapira. "We actually don't have that many already and we haven't introduced one since Waitangi Day which was 50 years ago."

Welcome! My guest today is Marianne Elliott, a mouthy introvert who collects treasures and tells tales. She is the National Director for Action Station, a digital platform to enable social action. She rallies fellow New Zealanders to fight for truth, justice, and a kinder way. Marianne trained as a human rights lawyer, and worked in several places around the world before going to the Gaza Strip and Afghanistan. Stories are her secret weapon and yoga is her medicine. Her memoir, Zen Under Fire, is a moving account of working on the world’s most notorious battlefield and her personal story about the effect of her lifestyle on her relationships.  In this episode, you’ll learn: How Marianne’s decision not to have a child came from a combination of choices and circumstances. For many years, Marianne made life choices that didn’t coincide with life as a mother. When she contemplated parenthood, she didn't have a suitable partner with whom to embark on this life experience. “Sometimes, the choice is not between A and B, but between B and C.” How we control with technology SO many aspects of our lives, but the circumstances surrounding having/not having a child cannot be controlled. One of the most hurtful comments is that parenthood alone transforms you from selfish and shallow to caring and compassionate. A deep, compassionate heart can be awakened in other ways besides motherhood. “Closing the door” on parenthood did bring grief, that this part of the human experience would NOT be a part of her life. Marianne saw a therapist for six months to process the decision she’d made. Zen retreats, journaling, meditation, and therapy all were helpful. The MOST helpful support for Marianne came from a friend in a similar situation, the only person with whom she could be totally honest and transparent. Women without children are perceived in stereotypically negative ways. Ironically, men who chose to not be parents are not questioned or perceived in the same selfish, negative ways that women are. Society seems to define women according to their state of motherhood or non-motherhood. Women need to be allies to each other, whether or not they have children. Marianne has nephews, nieces, and many children in her life. Marianne has an increasingly small number of close friends with whom she has much in common, being in mid-40’s and child-free. Social networks DO exist for women in this narrow niche. The major benefits for Marianne to not having children are that she can pour herself into incredibly important work. She enjoys incredible freedom and flexibility, which allow her to be a support system for many of her friends who do have children. Marianne describes herself as an introvert who LOVES to be alone, so she wonders how she would’ve coped if motherhood had come to her. Find Marianne at www.marianne-elliott.com, which features her writings and her book about her time as an aid worker in Afghanistan. I do hope you enjoyed this episode. Please go to michellemariemcgrath.com for more episodes of these valuable conversations. Thank you!
