It's one of only a few classic radio shows by African-Americas. Destination Freedom was a weekly radio program produced by NBC radio station WMAQ in Chicago from 1948 to 1950. It presented biographical histories of prominent African-Americans as written by the program's producer Richard Durham. You are going to hear a 1950 episode about the creation of the National Urban League, the nonpartisan historic civil rights organization that advocates on behalf of economic and social justice for African Americans, and against racial discrimination in the United States. Plus a 1949 episode about the founder of the city of Chicago. Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was an African-American trader who established the settlement of Chicago in the 1780s. When you think of Arizona, the images and people that come to mind are very stereotypical. Wide desert vistas and mountains, cactus and clear skies, cowboys and Native Tribes, Latinos and snowbirds…who have lived here for generations.  What you probably don't think of is the rich history of African Americans who also settled this state. At present, the Black population makes up 5.4% of Arizona's census. That might not seem like much, but African Americas are the third largest demographic in our state. When looking at Phoenix alone, the percentage jumps up to 7.4% of the population identifying as Black or African American. The number is growing. The Arizona Republic has found that 800,000 African Americans have moved to the Valley since 2010. And that expansion hasn't stopped, even with the pandemic. In this two-part series, we are taking a closer look at African American representation on the Phoenix City Council. We're starting with two winners that have made history. Then, next week in episode two, we'll go back in time to explore the first Black man to sit on the City's council. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Biden supporters are as scarce as a winning lottery ticket. According to Pew Research this week, just 41% of adult Americans approve of Biden's job performance as president. But that isn't the worst, for as Biden continues to lose confidence from traditional Democrat demographics like African Americas, who 1/3rd of them disapprove of his handling of everything. When Biden took office, he held a 92% favorable rating among Christian Blacks - now, that number is 65%. The reason for these dismal numbers is quite apparent - Joe Biden's lack of leadership, national and global understanding, and his continued willingness to disregard reality is killing our nation, our economy, our security, and our everyday way of life. Add into the mix an ex-KGB, megalomanic in Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is staging a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, will undoubtedly send crude oil prices near $150 a barrel and over $5 a gallon at your local pump. You can't make this stuff up - this is happening - right now. And where is our great leader, Joe Biden? - again, hiding out in the confines of his Camp David compound. Sound familiar? When our countrymen and women and longtime allies in Afghanistan were threatened, hunted down, and killed, where was Joe Biden? - that's right, in the bunkers and basements of Camp David. Joe Biden is nothing like Donald Trump, and even further from the genius of Ronald Reagan. By the end of 2024, 12 of the last 16 years would have been under a Democrat president, and America has never been weaker. Joe Biden has turned these United States into nothing more than a paper tiger of his former self - and nation of pride we once were. A country that said we would not fight in global wars, but if you endanger our way of life, threaten our security, or harm our people or allies, we will leave a dusting of your existence. This is the America we should all strive to be - but under Biden and the other clueless within his administration, America will be a nation of kneepad-wearing nothings, begging the Putin's of the world to take what they want, just don't hurt us. 2020 proved to be one of the most unprecedented and unpredictable years in history. Forevermore, marketing students will study the way brands altered campaigns at moments notice, embraced new technology, and dealt with social challenges as they surfaced. And they will also study the fallout and response to all of those activities in the years that followed, especially as it relates to marketing in the digital world to meet a new kind of audience. “2021, aside from all of this exciting brand new technology, and all of the demographic shifts that are happening that are going to allow brands to do new things for the first time, it's going to be a year of huge risk because a lot of consumers and employees that are at home with a lot of extra time, a lot of millennials and genZ that are going to be spending more time than normal on social media and on digital, which means a lot of the things that brands are doing right now is going to be scrutinized.”Kai Wright is an author, advisor, and lecturer at Columbia University, as well as the Founder & Curator of blacklist100, so he sits at an interesting intersection in the marketing universe: both as a scholar and a practitioner. On this episode of Marketing Trends, Kai dives into the intricacies of 2020 and the ripple effect it continues to have on the marketing industry. Kai also dives into the social movements brands have had to respond to and what that response means to consumers.Main Takeaways:All About the Ecosystem: Companies that took the time to invest in their digital ecosystems prior to the pandemic are now ahead of the game. Investing in that digital infrastructure allowed those brands to move quickly as the world shifted even more toward online activities, and gave them the opportunity to build trust with consumers and a sense of strong brand loyalty. The Next Big Shift: The next huge growth opportunity for marketers is not going to be commerce or digital, but rather it will be how they start shifting their messages to target minority communities and meet their needs more specifically. The U.S. Census estimates that over the next 40 years, 90% of the country's population will be made up of three groups: African Americas, LatinX. and Asian Americans. Marketers who can pivot their messaging and target these audiences will see more growth than those who stick to their old ways. The Power of the SMB: Marketers need to have an understanding of the audience or community that they are targeting. The SMB market is integral from an economic perspective, especially the communities that operate around them. Ignoring or misunderstanding SMBs will eventually lead to withering away of that market and the surrounding communities.---Marketing Trends podcast is brought to you by Salesforce. The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) recently held an event with Black community leaders in downtown Atlanta. They were joined by a panel of medical professionals and community leaders and the discussion centered on the disparities in health care for African Americas including the lack of access when it comes to cardiovascular-related issues. African American participation in cardiovascular-based clinicals was identified as a critical factor toward improved health. The group at this workshop—both medical professionals and community leaders—agreed that access to healthcare information and clinical trials is key moving forward. Why? Well, for starters, Dr. Jayne Morgan, a cardiologist with Piedmont Healthcare, declared that their profession is not doing enough to secure approval for Blacks. Morgan and others firmly believe that clinical research as a care option—access to clinical trials in community settings within African American districts in cities such as Atlanta, for example, can better ensure that Blacks receive the best medical care—that is, “maximal care.” She went on to declare, “Clinical trials, especially cardiology and oncology, that can potentially add precious years to your life go unaccessed by members of our community.” You can find Dr. Jayne Morgan here and here

In 2015 Kevin Warren became the first African-Americas chief operating officer of an NFL team. He is a lawyer by education and got his first job in the NFL in 1997 when he was hired by Dick Vermeil in a legal front office position. He earned a super Bowl ring with the Rams in 1999.   He became interested in sports at an early age, which he attributes to members of his family. His father, the late Dr. Morrison Warren, Sr., played professional football for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948.  His eldest brother, Morrison Warren, Jr., played football at Stanford in the early 1960s, and was one of the first African-American scholarship student-athletes at Stanford.  When Kevin was around 12 years old he struck by a car and forced into traction and a body cast for many months. Doctors informed Warren that there was a chance he might not walk again, and therefore it was highly unlikely that he would ever fulfill any dreams he had of playing sports. Kevin used the money he received in his settled over the accident to build a pool in his family's backyard. Aided by his dedication to swimming, Warren recovered and went on to be recruited to play college basketball. After representing the Vikings’ new ownership group in their purchase of the team, the Vikings then hired Warren as their Executive Vice President of Legal Affairs and Chief Administrative Officer in 2005.  This is his story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/linklete/support

(I'll Wait) While Black had the chance to sit down with NASCAR  pioneer and living legend Bill Lester. Bill wanted to drive fast since his teen years and finally by age 40 made it to the nation's biggest racing stage. Our conversation today leans in hard on how to find your way to your dreams even when the thing you are dreaming about isn't necessarily accepting of who you are.  Bill discusses how powerful the support of a black woman can be and calls out his wife specifically for pushing and pulling him to get out there and make his dreams come true. (Pro tip: Black Woman are indeed magic) He also goes in depth on being black and educated in NASCAR shining light on both the amazing times and struggles that being a black race car driver created. Bill is a member of a VERY small group of African Americas to participate in the sport of NASCAR.  His story is both black history and a reminder of what black future can look like - we can do anything, be anywhere, and accomplish everything!!!! It would be easy to describe the present faux controversy over the nomination of 2nd Circuit of Appeals Court judge, Sonia Sotomayor, to the U.S. Supreme Court as media-generated, and thus, unreal. But that would be too easy. As forces on the political right decry the jurist as "racist", "reverse racist", or "biased", such terms do far more than spur flagging newspaper sales, it amps up the summer hearings for her nomination. And while it may not reach the temperature of the Clarence Thomas - Anita Hill senate hearings, it will get plenty of attention, if only for the wrong reasons. It is almost laughable to seriously consider the 'racist' claims launched by the Limbaugh, Gingrich and Tancredo axis of the Republican Party, given their manic xenophobia when it comes to Mexican immigrants, an issue that has driven millions of Latinos away from the GOP. But, for argument's sake, let's examine the question, from a central core issue. Are Latinos a race? The short answer is no. Latinos, or Hispanics, are a linguistic and cultural community, but one of stunning diversity. In fact, Hispanics are a conglomeration of many races -- and indeed, many cultures, formed over centuries. There are millions of people who are as dark-skinned (or darker) than African Americas, but are classified as Latinos, who are of Puerto Rican, Dominican or Mexican heritage. The lesson in this is that race is often a national construct, which may be transformed by crossing a border. Decades ago, one would think, there were no Hispanics (or at least the term wasn't used). People were classified according to their national heritage, or they were called "Spanish -surnamed." But the lives, experiences, and dreams of people can be profoundly different, depending on where one's family hails: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Argentina or Cuba. All of these people may be called Latinos, but they are white, red, brown and black. Their familial and genetic histories draw Spain, Italy, the Americas and Africa. In sum, Latinos are not a race, as race is understood in this country, but a linguistic and multi-cultural community of breathtaking diversity. The irony is that Judge Sotomayor, if she were born in many Latin American countries (instead of the Bronx), would have "blanca", or "claro" on her birth certificate (meaning white). Only in the US does she become a 'person of color', simply because whiteness in the American sense, is a narrow, exclusive domain. Many millions who now consider themselves white had grandparents who weren't considered white, especially given their southern European places of origin. But, things change; even our definitions of race. (c) '09 maj
