Dick Biondi was an absolute radio legend. He died last week at the age of 90, after a 67-year career that paved the way for generations of broadcasters.   He was the first guy in the states to play the Beatles on the air. He was on the ground floor for the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis, as well as plenty other early architects of modern music.   Biondi was inducted to the Radio Hall of Fame in 1998. Specific to Chicago, his voice was heard on WLS-AM, WCFL, WMAQ, WBBM FM, WJMK and WLS-FM.   Biondi's passing has made me think about the importance of radio during his lifetime, the value of community involvement and the thrill of shared pop culture experience.   With that, I wanted to invite someone on for this episode who could help us learn more about the radio legend. And for that, I'm turning to my old WGN colleague, Scott Miller. Scott's the morning host at WJBC, the “Voice of Central Illinois,” and he worked with, and knew, Dick Biondi for decades. (Associated image: Courtesy Scott Miller) Car Con Carne is proud to be sponsored by Alex Ross Art (alexrossart.com). San Diego Comic Con is fast approaching. The University of Chicago Roundtable grew out of arguments had by professors at the faculty club. In 1931 they were convinced their forum would make for good radio. WMAQ agreed. The show premiered on February 1st of that year. It began running nationally over NBC on October 15th, 1933. The thirty-minute time slot allowed for little grandstanding. Professors rotated with each broadcast according to their expertise. They sat at a triangular table, which put the speakers face-to-face. It had time-warning lights facing each chair and was built like a sloping pyramid, with a microphone at the top. If people really were seeing UFOs in the sky they had to be coming from other worlds. On December 19th, 1948 The Roundtable attempted to answer the question from a scientific point of view. There were no scripts, but Roundtable was the first show of its kind to issue a weekly magazine. It contained a transcript of the previous program, biographies of the participants, listener feedback, suggested topical reading, and a schedule of coming broadcasts. The University of Chicago Roundtable would air until June 12th, 1955, finally going off the air when NBC launched Monitor.

On January 14, 1989, NBC affiliate TV station WMAQ in Chicago was broadcasting their regular sign-off for the evening. This included a number of Public Services announcements, followed by the nightly playing of the National Anthem. After the station signed off for the early moring hours, a missing child poster was displayed. But there was something incredibly unnerving about this particular broadcast. The first was the lack of information. An extremely poor quality photo (you can barely make out the person's face, it's that bad) was displayed along with the text "Missing-Joanna Lopez" alongside a Chicago phone number. No other information accompanied the image. Two years later on the same station, the same obscure posted appeared again after the station signed off--this time the image remained for 10 seconds before switching to the familiar colored bars that anyone familiar with TV in the early 1990's likely remembers seeing. All this would lead you to the conclusion that Joanna Lopez, whoever she was, was still missing in 1991. But there was just one problem--there is no record of anyone by the name Joanna Lopez going missing in the late 1980's in Chicago.Armchair detectives have spent hours combing the Internet for any record, any article, any evidence that a person by the name of Joanna Lopez ever existed and was missing in 1989.Today's episode features returning guest Joann Li and together we discuss all the questions around this bizarre and incredibly obscure situation. NOTE: This episode discusses a television broadcast and an image-which unfortunately cannot be displayed in a podcast format. For this reason, we encourage you to visit http://143mysteries.com or our Instagram page here: https://www.instagram.com/143mysteries/Images associated with this case and our discussion will be posted on both platforms.

This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 120: Radio and The Harvest (1936 - 1954) ____________________ Jim Jordan was born on a farm near Peoria, Illinois on November 16th, 1896. He met Marian Driscoll, a coal miner's daughter, at choir practice. She was born on April 15th, 1898. Both wanted a life in the theater. He studied voice and she played the piano. They were married on August 31st, 1918. By the 1920s Jim and Marion were performing together on stage, playing in small-town movie houses and lodge halls throughout the midwest. Their two children, Kathryn, and Jim Jr. were born at the end of Vaudeville tours. Vaudeville wasn't paying off. They went broke in 1923 and Jim went to work in a department store, but the Jordans couldn't stay away from the stage. Jim soon went to Chicago for a traveling musical show. In 1924 the couple debuted on the radio. Under that first contract, they were heard on WIBO as The O'Henry Twins for twenty-six weeks. From 1925 until 1927, they played over Chicago's WENR, gradually making the transition to comedy. They were heard in a children's show, The Air Scouts until December 31st, 1929 and both Jim's Grab Bag and Luke and Mirandy until 1931. Over this early period they developed dozens of on-air voices. In 1929 the Jordans met Don Quinn on The Farmer Rusk Hour. They became friends, with Quinn penning occasional gags for the couple. Their loose partnership led to success. On Luke and Mirandy, Jordan played a character named Uncle Luke, a fibber of sorts, and Marian was Aunt Mirandy, his wife. They starred in skits on The National Farm and Home Hour over NBC's WMAQ. This would last until 1935. They simultaneously were featured players in a soap opera, The Smith Family. It was this partnership that eventually led to Smackout.

On Thanksgiving Day in 1947, as east-coast families were digesting dinner and settling in for dessert, Bob Crosby’s Club Fifteen took to the air on CBS with fifteen minutes of popular music opposite Guy Lombardo on NBC. Musical programs like Club Fifteen and The Chesterfield Supperclub were often used as buffers between late afternoon and prime-time programming. Because the east-coast is three hours ahead of the west, most shows recorded in Hollywood were initially done for eastern primetime. By Thanksgiving of 1947 west-coast listeners received either a single live broadcast, a delayed transcription, or a live repeat. For example, at 8PM over WNBC in New York, The Aldrich Family, starring Ezra Stone as Henry Aldrich took to the air. Although NBC aired the show live in Chicago over WMAQ at 7, on the west-coast, NBC programmed the series to air at 8:30PM on KFI. At 8:30PM eastern time, live from Los Angeles, Burns and Allen signed on for Maxwell House. Tobe Reed was the announcer. Hans Conried was an oft-featured character actor. As usual, Gracie held George’s singing in a higher regard than most. That month, the Burns and Allen’s rating was 21.4. Nearly twenty million people heard this broadcast.

Dr.G’s guest today is the award-winning investigative journalist, Roberta Baskin. The impact of her work has made controversial waves across the media having exposed misconduct among the worlds most trusted and influential corporations – from the Nike sweat shops to the Small Smiles Medicaid scam to the Heineken toxins. Stories ridden with controversy, Roberta backs down to no one, and reveals the hidden truth behind how she cracked these cases. Through her latest initiative AIM2Flourish, Roberta has now re-focused her attention 180 degrees towards educating and inspiring leaders on how to “do well while doing good”. How did she uncover these hot stories? What was the resistance? What’s it like to be a journalist today? Why is there so much bad new today? How do we train our future leaders to be socially responsible? All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Roberta Baskin Roberta Baskin, executive director of AIM2Flourish, is an investigative journalist who spent her career exposing corporate misconduct. As a correspondent for esteemed news programs such as 20/20, 48 Hours and NOW with Bill Moyers, Baskin broke noteworthy stories such as the Nike sweatshop scandal and Small Smiles Medicaid scam. Her work has earned 75-plus journalism prizes including multiple Emmys, prestigious George Foster Peabodys, and the Radio-Television News Directors Edward R. Murrow Award. But after 30 years earning the nickname “Bad News Baskin,” she has shifted her focus to that of showcasing of innovative businesses who do good around the world. Key Interview Takeaways To be an extraordinary investigative journalist, one needs tenacity. Because Baskin didn’t have a journalism degree, she was willing to take risks and work harder than anyone else to get the story. Her naiveté gave her permission to do things that others wouldn’t, i.e.: wait five hours to speak with the manager of a soccer ball factory in Pakistan – a factory that was protected by armed guards. Baskin’s success was rooted in this resolve to tell the stories that weren’t being told. “The story is bigger than the self.” Investigative journalism has the power to transform industries. When Baskin was fired from WMAQ in Chicago over a story about the cancer-causing agents in beer produced in the US, she took it to another network. Once Baskin had uncovered the presence of toxic chemicals, beer companies were finally willing to spend the money necessary to change their process. The media movement to share not just “bad news,” but also stories of resilience and opportunity is powerful and inspiring. Baskin’s AIM2Flourish is a global learning initiative that teaches the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals to business school students and then challenges them to find companies with products and practices that align with said goals. For example, the Indonesian company PT Tirta Marta makes plastic bags out of tapioca. The environmentally friendly bags biodegrade within two weeks, and the use of cassava root in production supports local farmers. AIM2Flourish seeks to discover and reward these pioneering businesses. Amos 'n' Andy was a situation comedy popular in the United States from the 1920s through the 1950s. The show began as one of the first radio comedy serials, written and voiced by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll and originating from station WMAQ in Chicago, Illinois. After the series was first broadcast in 1928, it grew in popularity and became a huge influence on the radio serials that followed. Amos 'n' Andy creators Gosden and Correll were white actors familiar with minstrel traditions. They met in Durham, North Carolina in 1920, and by the fall of 1925, they were performing nightly song-and-patter routines on the Chicago Tribune's station WGN. Since the Tribune syndicated Sidney Smith's popular comic strip The Gumps, which had successfully introduced the concept of daily continuity, WGN executive Ben McCanna thought the notion of a serialized drama could also work on radio. He suggested to Gosden and Correll that they adapt The Gumps to radio. They instead proposed a series about "a couple of colored characters" and borrowed certain elements of The Gumps. Their new series, Sam 'n' Henry, began January 12, 1926, fascinating radio listeners throughout the Midwest. That series became popular enough that in late 1927 Gosden and Correll requested that it be distributed to other stations on phonograph records in a "chainless chain" concept that would have been the first use of radio syndication as we know it today. When WGN rejected the idea, Gosden and Correll quit the show and the station that December. Contractually, their characters belonged to WGN, so when Gosden and Correll left WGN, they performed in personal appearances but could not use the character names from the radio show.THIS EPISODE:April 4, 1954. Amos 'n' Andy began March 19, 1928, on WMAQ, and prior to airing each program they recorded their show on 78 rpm disks at Marsh Laboratories, Orlando R. Marsh, owner. Initially, Gosden and Correll portrayed all the male roles. Between the two, they voiced over 170 distinct characterizations in the show's first decade. With the episodic drama and suspense heightened by cliffhanger endings, Amos 'n' Andy reached an ever-expanding radio audience. It was one of the earliest success stories of radio syndication, and at least 70 stations besides WMAQ carried the program using prerecorded records. Amos Jones and Andy Brown worked on a farm near Atlanta, Georgia, and during the episodes of the first week, they made plans to find a better life in Chicago, despite warnings from a friend. With four ham and cheese sandwiches and $24, they bought train tickets and headed for Chicago where they lived in a State Street rooming house and experienced some rough times before launching their own business, the Fresh Air Taxi Company.
