Chris Holman welcomes Brad Ward, Vice President of Public Policy and Legal Affairs at Michigan Realtors, Lansing, MI. Michigan's housing shortage is increasingly seen as a business issue, not just a housing issue. How is the Housing Readiness Plan tied to economic growth and workforce attraction? Some supporters say outdated zoning and permitting rules are driving up costs and slowing development. What practical changes in this plan could make the biggest difference for housing supply and affordability? Business groups, Realtors, and homebuilders are backing this package. What does that unusually broad coalition say about the urgency of the housing challenge in Michigan? For employers struggling to attract or retain talent, how does housing availability and affordability affect competitiveness, and how could this plan help? There is often tension between statewide reform and local control. How does the Housing Readiness Plan balance protecting property rights and local input while still reducing barriers to development? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Watch MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ Bipartisan coalition of business, environment, real estate and advocacy groups urge Michigan Legislature to pass Housing Readiness Plan Skyrocketing costs, shortage of supply require statewide solution to create stability, protect property rights, boost affordability LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan business groups joined environmental, real estate, housing advocacy, social service organizations, and diverse nonprofit groups today to call on the Legislature to pass the Housing Readiness Plan, a bipartisan, bicameral package of bills that can help rein in skyrocketing costs, boost housing supply and protect property rights. (See an outline of the plan and list of supporters below.) Supported by Republican and Democratic legislators in both the House and Senate, the proposal comes as Michigan faces a severe housing crisis, with Michigan's inventory of available housing half of what a balanced market should have, affordable housing short by hundreds of thousands, and the median housing price at $270,000 – a jump of $40,000 in just three years. “What we're seeing today is real momentum,” said State Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids), a sponsor of the package. “This coalition brings together partners from across Michigan who may not always agree on everything, but are united in one thing: we need more housing options, and we need them now. The Housing Readiness package is about making it possible to build more homes Michiganders can actually afford, and it's clear that there is growing, statewide support to get this done.” “It's encouraging to see a broad coalition come together who all agree on one thing: Michigan needs more housing and we need to make it easier to build it,” said State Senator John Lindsey (R-Coldwater), a member of the Housing Readiness Plan coalition. “Michigan is facing a housing crisis. For too long, outdated regulations and unnecessary red tape have slowed down development and driven up costs for families. By cutting through bureaucracy and streamlining processes, we can make it so everyone in Michigan has a fair shot at a safe, more affordable place to call home.” The Housing Readiness Plan modernizes outdated zoning rules while preserving public input, local planning authority, public hearings, planning commissions and local votes. The plan streamlines rules on residential building, parking requirements and dwelling and lot sizes. The plan also clarifies development study and petition processes.
“Canada Is Killing Itself” says The Atlantic, in an explosive report on MAiD (Medical Assistance In Dying) practitioners in Canada – including Dr. Ellen Wiebe, who has reportedly “facilitated the deaths of more than 430 patients.” It's getting worse: according to a new report, the Quebec College of Physicians has even raised the idea of extending current MAiD practices to cover individuals suffering purely from mental illnesses like depress, and to infants under one year old. But what happens in Canada doesn't often stay with its borders: California is rapidly adopting draconian measures that mirror Canada's radical program. Since it was made legal in 2016, MAiD has been responsible for over 76,000 deaths in Canada, now accounting for over five percent of all deaths in the country. A case now headed to the Arizona Supreme Court could reshape how government regulates work and small businesses in the state. At the center of the dispute is a fundamental question: Do Americans have a constitutional right to earn a living without excessive government interference? Joining the podcast is Timothy Sandefur, Vice President for Legal Affairs at the Goldwater Institute, which is arguing that economic freedom should be treated as a fundamental right under the Arizona Constitution. The organization says many occupational licensing laws create unnecessary barriers that prevent people from working independently or starting businesses. In this episode, Sandefur explains the case, including an example involving an engineer who can legally do work for a company but cannot offer the same services independently without government permission. We also explore how common licensing barriers are across Arizona and what could change if the Arizona Supreme Court agrees that the “right to earn a living” deserves stronger constitutional protection.

EPISODE 663 - Tad Crawford - A Woman in the Wild - A revealing and memorable portrait of a woman boldly facing her demons in pursuit of a meaningful lifeTad Crawford is an author, attorney, and publisher. He grew up in the artists' colony of Woodstock, New York. Interested in writing both fiction and nonfiction, he majored in economics at Tufts College and graduated from Columbia Law School. After clerking for a judge on New York State's highest court, the Court of Appeals, Crawford worked for a small general law firm in New York City while writing and teaching writing and literature at the School of Visual Arts. Finding few resources to help artists deal with legal matters such as copyrights, the sale and licensing of art, gallery and publishing contracts, income taxes, moral rights, and estate planning, Crawford initiated a “Law and the Visual Artist” course at the School of Visual Arts and wrote Legal Guide for the Visual Artist. Legal Guide now has well over one hundred thousand copies in print and is in its sixth edition (co-authored with M.J. Bogatin).Crawford followed Legal Guide with numerous other books to help professionals in the creative disciplines. The Legal Affairs editor and a regular columnist for Communication Arts magazine, he also wrote for journals such as American Artist, Art in America, Confrontation, Family Circle, Glamour, Guernica, Harper's Bazaar, The Nation, and Writer's Digest. He served as general counsel for the Graphic Artists Guild, lobbied as legislative counsel for the Copyright Justice Coalition (which had many artists' groups as members), and volunteered as Chairman of the Board for the Foundation for the Community of Artists. In addition to testifying before the Senate subcommittee on behalf of artists' rights, he drafted a package of state laws which he presented to the National Conference of State Legislatures. This presentation led to the enactment of laws favorable to artists in a number of states, including New York and California. The National Endowment for the Arts selected Crawford as a grant recipient to write on the topic of artists' rights. He also received the Graphic Artists Guild's Walter Hortens Distinguished Service Award. In 1989 Crawford founded Allworth Press to offer the practical information needed by creative professionals such as artists, photographers, designers, and authors. He knew firsthand the issues such creative people face each day and envisioned a spectrum of books to help them survive and grow professionally. Beyond these efforts for creative professionals, he also wrote The Secret Life of Money: Enduring Tales of Debt, Wealth, Happiness, Greed, and Charity; A Floating Life: A Novel; and On Wine-Dark Seas: A Novel of Odysseus and his Fatherless Son Telemachus.Allworth Press, which today has hundreds of titles in print, became an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing in 2011. Many areas of the country are beset by serious housing shortages. State-level regulatory policies such as exclusionary zoning and other restrictions on construction are, according to some analysts, major causes of the crisis. A variety of possible reforms have been enacted or proposed in various studies, including “YIMBY” (“Yes In My Backyard”) zoning deregulation, inclusionary zoning, rent control, and state constitutional litigation and amendment. Join us for this discussion on the merits or pitfalls of the range of possible state-level remedies for the housing crisis.Featuring:James Burling, Vice President of Legal Affairs, Pacific Legal FoundationChristopher Elmendorf, Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law, UC Davis School of LawDavid Schleicher, Walter E. Steve welcomes Timothy Sandefur, Vice President for Legal Affairs at the Goldwater Institute's Scharf-Norton Center for Constitutional Litigation and Duncan Chair in Constitutional Government, to break down a growing threat to free speech. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (08/06/2025): 3:05pm- Breaking News: In a unanimous decision, the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court has ruled that former Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney's 2021 executive order replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day is invalid—noting that the order amounted to lawmaking without input from Philadelphia City Council and, consequently, violated the City Charter. 3:10pm- According to multiple reports, SiriusXM will not renew Howard Stern's show when his contract concludes at the end of 2025. According to The Daily Mail, Stern found out via a Google Alert during a “team building” party with staff. Some estimates suggest Stern was making as much as $120 million per year. 3:30pm- Press Conference: Five soldiers were shot at Fort Stewart in Georgia—the shooter is in custody. 3:40pm- During an interview with Laura Ingraham on Monday, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard called out legacy media outlets for promoting the Russiagate hoax—explaining that they operated as a “propaganda arm of the deep state.” 3:55pm- Rich had a wardrobe malfunction while at Fox News—but don't worry, it wasn't quite as bad as Janet Jackson's Super Bowl disaster. 4:05pm- Michael O'Neil—Vice President of Legal Affairs at Landmark Legal Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest article for The Washington Examiner, “Don't Appoint a Special Counsel to Investigate the Russia Collusion Hoax.” Read the full article here: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2025/aug/4/dont-appoint-special-counsel-investigate-russia-collusion-hoax/. 4:30pm- During an interview with Laura Ingraham on Monday, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard called out legacy media outlets for promoting the Russiagate hoax—explaining that they operated as a “propaganda arm of the deep state.” 4:45pm- George Bochetto—Attorney & former U.S. Senate Candidate—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his tireless fight to protect Columbus Day in Philadelphia. Interestingly, Republicans currently hold just 17% of the congressional seats in CA—despite nearly 40% of the state voting for Donald Trump in 2024. Doesn't that suggest the state is already heavily gerrymandered? Comparatively, Democrats currently hold 32% of the House seats in Texas (with one vacant seat in a district that is reliably blue—so, the real number is closer to 34%). Kamala Harris won 42% of the Texas statewide vote in 2024. 5:30pm- From the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump—alongside Apple CEO Tim Cook, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick—announced that Apple will invest an additional $100 billion in domestic manufacturing, assuring that more of the company's supply chain will be based in the United States. In June of 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court held in Kelo v. City of New London that the local government did not violate the Fifth Amendment's Public Use Clause when it condemned private residential lots and transferred them to commercial developers to promote local economic development as part of a comprehensive municipal development plan. Kelo was certainly a landmark decision and, twenty years later, its impact is still felt and merits further consideration. Join our panel as it discusses Kelo’s legacy, the nature of “public use,” and the judiciary’s current and future relationship with eminent domain.Featuring:Prof. Peter Byrne, John Hampton Baumgartner, Jr. Professor of Real Property Law; Faculty Director, Georgetown Environmental Law and Policy Program; Faculty Director, Georgetown Climate Resource Center, Georgetown Law CenterWesley W.
