In this episode, we'll hear from Erin Sowerby Greene, who learned, at 37 weeks pregnant, that her daughter Briar no longer had a heartbeat. We'll also hear from Anne-Marie Cayer, a registered midwife supporting families living in urban and rural, remote, and Indigenous communities, about practices bereaved families should be able to access after a stillbirth. Erin and Anne-Marie teach us that although hospital procedures can vary from region to region, babies who are stillborn are still born and it's possible – even necessary – to bring dignity and meaning to the experience.Episode notes:Book referred to: Alan D. In Podcast Episode 75, “Enveloped in Grief,” Kim discusses the challenges which come with grief.   The primary scripture text for this episode is Ruth 1:3-5, with a focal verses of 1:5:   “Then Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons. The two sons married Moabite women. One married a woman named Orpah, and the other a woman named Ruth. But about ten years later, both Mahlon and Kilion died. This left Naomi alone, without her two sons or her husband.” (Ruth 1:3-5)   Supplemental Texts:   11 When three of Job's friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. 12 When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. 13 Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words. (Job 2:11-13)   “And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)   William Worden's Four Tasks of Mourning Accept the Reality of the Loss Process Your Grief and Pain Adjust to the world without your loved one in it Find a way to maintain a connection to the person who died while embarking on your own life (Source: What are Worden's Four Tasks of Mourning?, Dr. Alejandra Vasquez, https://www.joincake.com/blog/wordens-tasks-of-mourning/)   RECOMMENDED GRIEF RESOURCES:   Understanding Your Grief: Ten Essential Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing Your Heart by Alan Wolfelt PhD The Understanding Your Grief Journal: Exploring the Ten Essential Touchstones by Alan D.
