This is a reboot of a past episode #502 of the Men in the Arena Podcast.
Keywords: miscarriage, grief, loss, holidays, grieving rituals, perinatal trauma. How do we cope with the profound pain of miscarriage and loss during a season often associated with joy and togetherness? Why does the holiday season intensify our grief, and how can we navigate cultural expectations that demand we put on a brave face? In this heartfelt episode, Justine Leach and Sarah Adelmann delve into the deeply personal and often unspoken experience of miscarriage, loss, and trauma, especially as they intersect with the holiday season. Justine opens the conversation with a poignant quote by Zeynep Gurtin, "A moment that changed me: My miscarriages were devastating – but an orca gave me comfort and hope", setting the tone for an in-depth discussion on the unique challenges of grieving during a time traditionally filled with celebration. They explore why grief feels particularly acute during the holidays and the societal pressures to appear cheerful despite personal sorrow. The discussion highlights the importance of acknowledging and honoring one's loss, the role of rituals in the grieving process, and the often-overlooked grief for the loss of an imagined future. By addressing losses that are not always recognized by society, Justine and Sarah emphasize the need for supportive spaces where individuals can authentically express their grief. This episode underscores the significance of allowing oneself to fully experience and process grief and the critical role of community and support during such times. At the end Sarah mentions the book Healing Your Grieving Heart After Miscarriage: 100 Practical Ideas for Parents and Families by Alan Wolfelt. We are hosting a FREE training on Trauma and the Perinatal Journey on Dec 2 at 9am EST live on Zoom. The training will be recorded so he hope you will still sign up even if the time does not work for you: https://resilient-birth.mykajabi.com/pl/2148550678 Takeaways Recognition of Miscarriage: Miscarriage is often not acknowledged as a significant loss by society, leaving those affected feeling isolated and unsupported. Cultural Expectations: Societal norms and expectations during the holiday season can place additional stress on those who are grieving, making it harder for them to cope. The Role of Rituals: Rituals can serve as a powerful means to honor loss and facilitate the healing process, providing a sense of structure and solace. Varied Manifestations of Grief: Grief is not limited to the loss of life; it also encompasses lost futures and unfulfilled dreams, which can be equally painful and deserving of recognition. Importance of Support: Support from friends, family, and the community is crucial for those experiencing loss. However, it is often insufficient, highlighting the need for more compassionate and consistent support systems. Challenges of the Holiday Season: Acknowledging the emotional toll of trying to "show up" and participate in holiday festivities while grieving is important for understanding the full impact of loss during this time. Self-Reflection for Better Support: Engaging in self-reflection to understand one's own feelings about loss and grief is vital. This awareness can enhance the ability to provide meaningful support to others, including clients. On the Resilient Birth podcast, Justine and Sarah explore the impact of trauma across the perinatal period, from trying-to-conceive to pregnancy, from childbirth to postpartum and parenting. Through an inspirational quote that drives our weekly conversations about trauma and healing, Justine and Sarah explore topics such as birth trauma, parenting as a survivor, and finding healing with vulnerability and compassion that support birthing people and birth professionals. Each week, listeners leave with takeaways to utilize in their lives and/or clients. Justine and Sarah hold the stories they share with honor and respect with the hope to impart knowledge, increase understanding, and bear witness to this challenging topic. Sarah is a licensed mental health counselor, educator, and mom of three. She walks with a story of trauma from before and as a result of her perinatal experience. Justine supports survivors of trauma through perinatal coaching and childbirth education. As well as being a mother of three, she holds a Ph.D. on representations of consent and sexual violence.
Today's episode delves into the active practice of mercy, guided by the instruction in Luke 6:36. We explore the transformative power of mercy not just as a concept, but as a daily practice that can reshape our interactions and heal our communities. Our springboard for today's discussion is: Luke 6:36: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." This command sets a high standard, aligning our actions with the very nature of God Himself, challenging us to embody mercy in all aspects of life.Mercy is transformative; it reaches beyond the confines of simple forgiveness and extends into active compassion and kindness. In this episode, we uncover how to live out this potent aspect of our faith in practical, impactful ways. The Impact of Mercy:* Barrier Breaking: Mercy has the unique power to dissolve barriers built by past hurts and misunderstandings, paving the way for renewed relationships and community healing.* Relationship Mending: Through acts of mercy, we can restore strained relationships, offering a fresh start from a place of understanding and compassion.Putting Mercy into Action:* Acts of Kindness: Small acts of kindness, such as reaching out to someone in need, offering help without being asked, or providing support without expectation of return, are foundational ways to practice mercy.* Understanding and Patience: Apply mercy in conversations and interactions by offering understanding and patience, especially in moments of disagreement or tension.* Community Involvement: Look for opportunities to volunteer or get involved in community programs that aim to help the less fortunate, advocating for mercy and compassion on a larger scale.Practical Ideas for Mercy in Daily Life:* Workplace: Show mercy by being patient with colleagues, offering support for their projects, or stepping in to mediate conflicts with a calm, non-judgmental approach.* Neighborhood: Be a source of mercy in your neighborhood by organizing community clean-ups, helping neighbors in need, or simply being a friendly and approachable presence.* Schools and Clubs: Encourage mercy among peers by starting or participating in programs that focus on inclusivity, anti-bullying, and peer support.ConclusionLiving out God's mercy is an active choice that can change not only your life but also the lives of those around you. It's about making mercy a daily practice that reflects the heart of God through every interaction.A Question of the Day: What is one area of your life where you can begin to show more mercy starting today?Growth Challenge: This week, choose one specific area where you will focus on demonstrating mercy. Whether it's at home, in your workplace, or within your community, document the changes you see in others and yourself through this practice.Let's Pray: Lord, empower us to be ambassadors of Your mercy in a world that often favors judgment and retaliation. Help us to understand the depth of Your mercy towards us and inspire us to extend that mercy to others in all that we do. Amen.As we continue our journeys, let's embrace the challenge to be merciful in all circumstances, inspired by the perfect example of our Father in heaven. In this week's episode, we reflect on how to prepare for Advent. During this busy season, it is easy to spend more time preparing our home than our hearts and we chat about the need for slowing down, quieting our hearts and surroundings, and becoming attentive to God's presence in our daily lives. We also share practical ways we prepare and wait for the coming of our Lord at Christmas. Be sure to subscribe to our weekly email to receive each episode, discussion questions, and videos to your inbox. Journal Questions: Ask the Holy Spirit: What do you want me to be present to this season? Where do I need hope in my life? Where do I lack peace in my life? Where do I need joy in my life? Where do I need to birth joy in my life? Discussion Questions: What practices do you incorporate in Advent to embrace the season of preparation? When will you take time for prayer this week and throughout Advent? How can you better embrace Advent rather than just tolerate it? How can you slow the interior pace of your heart in Advent? Quotes to Ponder: “The liturgy of Advent…helps us to understand fully the value and meaning of the mystery of Christmas. It is not just about commemorating the historical event, which occurred some 2,000 years ago in a little village of Judea. Instead, it is necessary to understand that the whole of our life must be an ‘advent,' a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ. To predispose our mind to welcome the Lord who, as we say in the Creed, one day will come to judge the living and the dead, we must learn to recognize him as present in the events of daily life. Therefore, Advent is, so to speak, an intense training that directs us decisively toward him who already came, who will come, and who comes continuously.” (St. John Paul II) Scripture for Lectio: “Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13) Sponsor - The Little Rose Shop: Discover the beauty of integrating faith into your everyday life with The Little Rose Shop. This week on The Nick Halaris Show we are featuring Katherine Schweit, a former FBI agent and one of the most influential gun violence advocates in the country. She conducted the first mass shooter study while at the FBI, is the founder and co-host of the Stop the Killing Podcast, and is the author of two really important books—“Stop the Killing” and “How to Talk About Guns With Anyone.” And she's just getting started. With a Ted Talk coming soon and a forthcoming book aimed at helping parents navigate this difficult-to-discuss issue, Katherine is determined to make a difference. I walked away from this discussion feeling not only more knowledgeable about the issue but also more optimistic that this is something we can actually solve. I wanted to have Katherine on the show to put a big spotlight on all the important work she's doing and to get her take on what practical steps we might take to start solving this frightening, intractable crisis. As a father of two young boys, I've thought way more about gun violence than I care to admit. My heart shatters every time one of these incidents occurs and I find myself increasingly angry at our collective inaction on the issue. This is a policy area where we just have to do something. Please tune in to this critically important episode to learn:Why it's so important to really understand the facts when discussing the gun violence problem in AmericaWhy, in a country like America where there are 400M guns in circulation and a long history of Constitutionally protected gun ownership, it's better to focus on other solutionsHow a profound lack of funding in law enforcement and education is making the crisis worseHow investments in things like mental health and anonymous reporting systems can make a big impact in preventing mass violenceWhat the “run, hide, fight” framework is and why you should care about it& Much, much moreStay tuned to the end to learn why Katherine believes it's so important for you to speak up when you observe any disturbing behavior (in almost every case, shooters make mistakes and reveal their plans) and to learn what you should do to prepare yourself and your family for the potential of mass violence. There is no substitute for experience. Michigan farmer John Burk has a masters degree in crop and soil science, spent 10 years as an ag and natural resources agent for Michigan State University, and has spent over two decades farming full time. Even though he's been farming full time for over 20 years now, he still remains involved in a lot of cover crop work with the university as well as some conservation districts. His real world experience and knowledge are invaluable in our discussion about the future of soil health. “Get some green manure back in. You've gotta replenish them soils. You've gotta keep them soils healthy, and you need to keep them in one place so they're not all over the neighborhood. At the same time, I'm gonna tell somebody don't go out tomorrow and this fall and say, I'm gonna plant a thousand acres of rye. You're never gonna do it again. Do a hundred acres of rye. Figure out how you're gonna manage that hundred before you do a thousand.” - John Burk John shares specifics about his planning strategies and things he has implemented or at least tried over the years. He brings a unique perspective as someone who not only grows corn and soybeans, but also sugar beets and dry edible beans. John says you need to “replenish your soil somehow and tillage isn't gonna do it all.” He recommends cover crops as a natural answer that will provide great benefits to soil health. “If you really think about it…the more root mass you have in the soil, the harder it is for that soil to compact. Plus it gives more air pockets for the rain to flow through rather than pond on top or pack those soil aggregates together. So that's why I always like to have a bunch of different masses of roots or even the mass up top worked into the soil.” - John Burk This Week on Soil Sense: Meet Michigan farmer John Burk as he shares extremely practical and detailed information about finding a way to build healthier soils on the farm John shares a lot of specifics about things he has implemented or tried over the years, including some really useful tools and strategies. Thank you to the Soy Checkoff for sponsoring this Farmers for Soil Health series of the Soil Sense podcast. I frequent many podcasting communities and without a doubt, the biggest question (and the biggest question for the last decade) is "How do I grow my podcast?".I've spoken before about why this isn't an easy task and why that might even be the wrong question to ask. The truth is that running a podcast as an independent creator is really hard, it's really time-consuming and by the time we've produced our episode, we often don't have the mental bandwidth or the physical time to properly market our show and thus, we simply end up in a constant "promo cycle" that consists of lots of "promotional tactics" that don't move the needle but that make us feel like they should. We repeat this with diminishing results and end up back at the same question: "How do I grow my podcast?!"; if we aren't careful, this can then lead us to consider quitting because no matter what we do, we don't see any meaningful change.I think about this like fitness and muscle growth. If we aren't seeing any results, then we have to change things up and shock the system. The famous quote, attributed to Albert Einstein, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” applies to our podcast growth too.But what should you do? Let me give you three ways to shock your podcast growth into moving in the right direction! These are not common things that people talk about, the normal things like:Guesting on showsTrailer swaps and feed dropsCo-hostingThey all work - we know that if people repeatedly hear you or your show on other shows that there's a better chance of them trying your show than if you don't do any of that. You're going where your audience is.We also know that you should be thinking about podcast marketing as just that, marketing - with defined & strategic campaigns, targets, and channel tactics - but that no indie creator really does because we're all really busy and most of us don't know how to be a marketer - we didn't get into podcasting for that.Try these three things alongside what you're already doing and focus on long-term, steady growth:Focus on your podcast SEO, both for web discovery and in-app podcast discovery.Do something newsworthy in your niche - this could be covering an event, development, or similar, but get there first and early.Start doing something in-person within your niche community - meetups, events, live recordings, etc. They cost very little and your show can "sponsor" the event!Just like growing anything, there is no one method of growing your podcast audience and there surely is no silver bullet. Imagination, planning, and long-term focus are key to all marketing campaigns but these three things will help you to break out of your comfort zone and shock the marketing system that you have in place.
