A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that statin use in patients with chronic liver disease was associated with a lower risk of liver cancer and hepatic decompensation, suggesting potential protective effects beyond lipid management. Surveys by the Annenberg Public Policy Center revealed widespread misinformation about the risks of consuming raw milk, highlighting the need for public education on the importance of pasteurization. New research links red meat allergy (alpha-gal syndrome) to bites from deer ticks and western black-legged ticks, expanding the geographic risk area and emphasizing the need for clinicians to consider this diagnosis in patients with unexplained allergic symptoms following tick bites.

05/14/23The Healthy Matters PodcastS02_E12 - Getting Control of AsthmaAsthma is something that an estimated 26 million Americans live with every day and approximately 10% of our kids. Living with asthma can be a challenge, especially if it's uncontrolled, and in 2019 the CDC estimated that around 10 people in the US die from asthma daily. But still, people with controlled asthma run marathons, scuba dive, and play 90+ minutes of soccer (David Beckham) regularly. So how does one get it under control? What is it, exactly? Do you ever grow out of it? And how are our treatments progressing?Join us on episode 12 for a conversation with Hennepin Healthcare Allergist and Immunology expert Dr. Josh Dorn, who cares for many patients living with asthma. We'll go over the origins and contributors to this condition, what it's like to live with asthma (including Dr. Dorn's interpretation of wheezing...), and discuss the current and emerging treatments and therapies used to help people get their asthma under control. COVID-19 has truly divided the nation into all aspects of society: physically, emotionally, politically, religiously...you name it! This was exacerbated by the roll-out of the mRNA vaccines by Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna during the end of 2020. The virus that was weakening the whole country seemed to become a bipartisan issue muddled by a myriad of misinformation and myths that flooded the internet. Because these erroneous information could cost someone's life, it was just right that we sought enlightenment and data from figures most reliable: evidence-based, up-to-date, and peer-reviewed science. There was no better expert to reach out to than Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Sanofi COVID-19 vaccine trials researcher, the current part of the new MOMI-Vax clinical trials, assistant clinical professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, medical contributor to the nation's biggest news channels, the youngest president of the New York Allergy and Asthma Society, double-board certified pediatric-adult Allergy and Immunology physician, AND most importantly...my birthday twin (Taurus unite): Dr. Purvi Parikh.Receiving her bachelor's degree in Political Science from Emory University in 2004, attaining her medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine in 2008, completing her Internal Medicine residency in Cleveland Clinic Hospital in 2011, and further fulfilling an Allergy and Immunology fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 2013, Dr. Parikh is currently practicing as an allergist and immunologist in New York, NY where she treats patients of all ages. It was, therefore, of no doubt that we reached out to her for all things COVID-19, the fresh roll-out of the mRNA and adenovirus vector vaccines during the recording time of Spring 2021, and immune response in general. From discussions about her medical journey to allergy talks about sensitivity vs. intolerance vs. allergy and the rarest allergy she has ever encountered, and to every topic under the sun about the COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer vs. Moderna vs. Janssen vs. Astrazeneca, the mRNA technology, incidences of blood clots, malicious claims of infertility and spontaneous abortion, their long-term safety, and natural immunity), we dissect the common questions that the general public had and feared during its first roll-out. Dr. Parikh has a very clear goal: to hopefully save lives by relaying correct information...and this is what Friends of Franz is all about! This episode includes brief discussions around the topic of physician suicide.Livestream Air Date: April 7, 2021Dr. Purvi Parikh: IG @panipurvinyc, FB @purviparikhmd, & Twitter @purviparikhmdFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian Franz

There are so many causes of angioedema to be aware of... Fortunately, they can all be attributed to one of two biochemicals. In this episode, Andrew explains the pathogenesis of angioedema and offers a framework for understanding this complex condition.
With unprecedented pauses in air pollution emissions seen around the world in the spring of 2020 and virus mitigation behaviors being implemented for over a year, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented a unique opportunity to better understand the impact of poor air quality on human health. In particular, exposure reduction due to mask-wearing and stay-at-home orders has contributed to anecdotal reports of reduced exacerbations among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions. To learn more about how the pandemic has altered care and disease management among these patients, we spoke with Courtney Blair, MD, an allergist and immunologist in Virginia. On this episode of Managed Care Cast, Blair who also serves as the president of the Greater Washington Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Society, discusses factors that may have contributed to improvements in her patients’ respiratory health over the past 15 months.
