Do you have the MTHFR gene mutation, and feel like it may be what's holding you back from healing?Or - do you not know if you have the MTHFR gene SNP, but wonder if you have it, how much it might be impacting you healing, and what the best testing is for it? If you have ANY question as to how much the MTHFR gene may be impacting your healing, then you DON'T want to miss today's episode. On today's episode, I'm interviewing Functional Genomics expert, Jaclyn Downs, on all things MTHFR and gene mutations. I met Jaclyn recently in the Instagram comments section of my profile when she offered up some free help to someone asking a question about genes. I love Jaclyn's response so much, and upon doing some quick stalking, fell even more in love with her knowledge and approach to genes. Naturally - I just had to have her on the podcast to share her with you all. A bit about Jaclyn: Jaclyn has a master's degree in Holistic Nutrition, a functional nutrigenomics certification from the NutriGenetic Research Institution, and is the author of the academically published book Enhancing Fertility Through Functional Medicine: Using Nutrigenomics to Solve ‘Unexplained' Infertility. On top of gaining her functional nutrigenomics certification from the NutriGenetic Research Institution, Jaclyn helped to create the very same program by working a researcher for Bob Miller, a top genetics researcher, to help create his practitioner certification program. Whether you are new to the conversation on how genes impact our health, or you've been in it a while, I hope my conversation today with Jaclyn is going to help you feel empowered and hopeful that no matter what genes you have - you CAN heal your body. The latest podcast episode of Veteran Oversight Now highlights the VA OIG's oversight work during April 2025, including three healthcare facility inspections reports on facilities in Tennessee, New York, and Colorado.   April 2025 Monthly HighlightsEach month, the VA Office of Inspector General publishes highlights of our congressional testimony, investigative work, and oversight reports. In April 2025, the VA OIG published 12 reports that included 51 recommendations. Report topics varied from a review to determine whether claims processors are properly assigning effective dates for PACT Act-related claims to an inspection related to a patient's delayed diagnosis and treatment for lung cancer at the VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System in Topeka and Leavenworth.  VA OIG investigative efforts helped resolved allegations that a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility, Seabrook House in New Jersey, submitted claims to VA's Community Care program and the state's Medicaid program for short-term residential treatment and partial hospitalization care for which it was not properly licensed or contracted and misled state inspectors. In a civil settlement, Seabrook agreed to pay $19.75 million to resolve False Claims Act allegations. Of this amount, VA will receive $19.15 million.  Meanwhile, 12 employees of the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center pleaded guilty to theft after receiving more than $396,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits by falsifying their applications and failing to disclose their employment and wages earned at VA, and a physician at the Bedford VA Medical Center in Massachusetts was arrested and charged in the District of Massachusetts with the receipt and possession of child pornography.Read the full monthly highlights.   Related Reports:The PACT Act Has Complicated Determining When Veterans' Benefits Payments Should Take EffectDelayed Diagnosis and Treatment for a Patient's Lung Cancer and Deficiencies in the Lung Cancer Screening Program at the VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System in Topeka and LeavenworthHiring of Claims Processors Generally Met Requirements and the Attrition Rate Remained Steady

Up to 80% of people may be living with insufficient levels of vitamin D, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids—three essential nutrients involved in critical functions like immune defense, cardiovascular health, mood regulation, and brain function. Modern lifestyles—marked by nutrient-poor diets, low sun exposure, chronic stress, and overuse of medications—disrupt the body's ability to absorb and maintain these key nutrients. Deficiencies often go undiagnosed due to outdated testing, yet they're strongly linked to conditions like depression, fatigue, diabetes, and heart disease. In this episode, I talk about, along with Andrew Huberman, how modern lifestyles and diets lead to widespread nutrient deficiencies and chronic disease—and how targeted nutrition and lifestyle changes can restore optimal health. Dr. Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist and tenured Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has made numerous important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain function, and neural plasticity, which is the ability of our nervous system to rewire and learn new behaviors, skills, and cognitive functioning. Dr. Huberman is a McKnight Foundation and Pew Foundation Fellow and was awarded the Cogan Award in 2017, which is given to the scientist making the largest discoveries in the study of vision. His lab's most recent work focuses on the influence of vision and respiration on human performance and brain states such as fear and courage. Work from the Huberman Laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine has been published in top journals including Nature, Science, and Cell and has been featured in TIME, BBC, Scientific American, Discover, and other top media outlets. Rewiring Your Vagus Nerve: A Functional ApproachWhile vagus nerve exercises like cold plunges and humming are popular, this episode explores a deeper functional perspective. What if underlying factors like mineral imbalances, gut issues, mold exposure, or structural misalignments are blocking your vagal function? The Mineral ConnectionYour vagus nerve functions as your body's electrical system, with minerals as crucial conductors. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis reveals important patterns:- Calcium/Magnesium Ratio: Excessive calcium dominance keeps you stuck in "fight or flight"- Calcium/Phosphorus Ratio: Ideally balanced at 2.3:1 for optimal function- Potassium Levels: Low levels signal insufficient nerve energy- Heavy Metal Burden: Toxic metals hijack nerve function by stealing mineral binding sites"Your vagus nerve is your digestive system's power cord. Mineral imbalances create short circuits!"The Gut-Vagus ConnectionYour gut contains the second largest neural system after the brain. Comprehensive stool testing can identify issues affecting vagal function:- Low microbial diversity correlates with reduced vagal tone- Deficiencies in butyrate-producers deprive the nerve of energy- Dysbiosis creates inflammation that dampens signalingThis creates a feedback loop: poor vagal tone worsens digestive function, increasing dysbiosis, further impairing vagal tone.Mold ExposureMold illness disrupts vagus nerve function through:- Direct neurotoxicity to vagal nuclei- Mitochondrial damage impairing energy production- Inflammatory cascades that dampen vagal toneMany experience treatment resistance because underlying mycotoxin burden continues suppressing function.Structural ConsiderationsThe vagus nerve can physically get "pinched" due to:- Cranial misalignments- Neck tension- Rib cage restrictions- Abdominal compressionThis explains why bodywork sometimes dramatically improves digestion when supplements haven't helped.Practical Support StrategiesWhile addressing root causes, try:1. Singing: Creates vibrations that stimulate the vagus2. Essential Oils: Applied diluted behind the ears3. Digestive Bitters: Trigger vagal firing4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Provide building blocks for nerve structureThe Holistic ApproachRather than isolated "hacks," assess your unique terrain. When we restore harmony to the entire ecosystem, vagal tone naturally improves, with benefits cascading throughout your physiology.Looking for deeper support? Your brain is not producing adequate amounts of neurotransmitters.   Neurotransmitters control your reality–your mood, memory, thinking and behavior.    And when your brain has what it needs, you naturally feel relaxed and alert, focused and positive–even happy.    But when your brain does not have what it needs, you get symptoms like anxiety, depression, anger and irritability, apathy, low energy and motivation, sleep problems and loss of memory, focus and attention.    An inadequate supply of neurotransmitters is why you have the urge to use substances like sugar, alcohol, caffeine and prescription medications to cope or compensate.   The good news is that nutrients you need are inexpensive and widely available. And clinical studies show that following simple nutritional protocols gives you FIVE TO ONE ODDS of overcoming substance use disorders.   In this episode, I give you a basic overview of the vitamins, minerals and amino acid supplements that can restore your sense of confidence and control.    —Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL if you're ready to fully commit to your personal growth and do the work to get emotionally sober. Hostile actions by Russia, Iran, and China clearly show that the United States is struggling when it comes to shaping the national security environment and deterring adversaries. The U.S. military no longer has the capability and capacity to defend the rules-based international order that has long been the cornerstone of its foreign policy. Absent a reset, this failure of deterrence could very well lead to a war between the United States and China. Deficiencies of the 1986 Goldwater-Nichols Reform Act severely restrict the ability on the services to prioritize long-term strategic threats in favor of the immediate, non-combat demands of the combatant commands and civilian defense bureaucracy. Too often, long-term defense procurement strategies and requirements are neglected given these dynamics. The resulting failure of U.S. forces to prudently modernize and recapitalize have emboldened America's adversaries to use violence to pursue their expansionist goals, setting the United States on a path toward a great power war. To prevent this and retain the current rules-based world order, it is time for a new vector.

Send us a textBeth Sanford is known as the "Sunshine Nurse" for two reasons. First, she is a doctorally-prepared nurse who has conducted extensive research on the importance of vitamin D in improving patient outcomes. Her studies have explored how vitamin D levels affect ICU patients, long-term care residents, and global maternal health. Beth is passionate about addressing vitamin D deficiency in clinical practice, population health, and policy.Did you know that vitamin D is both a nutrient and a hormone essential for nearly every cell in the body? It plays a crucial role in hundreds of processes every day. Deficiencies in vitamin D are now recognized as a risk factor for many chronic diseases, including osteoporosis, impaired cognitive function, various cancers, pregnancy complications, and cardiovascular disease. We explored how low vitamin D levels impact nurses and other healthcare professionals who work night shifts or are exposed to artificial light for over 12 hours a day. Beth compares the effects to pseudodementia, which can slow response times and hinder the ability to make critical decisions. If you are a nurse experiencing profound fatigue, run, don't walk to get your levels checked! Now, back to why Beth is known as the "Sunshine Nurse" for the second reason. She can literally light up a room. With her beautiful smile, positive outlook, and generous spirit, Beth reminds us all that we could use a little more light in our lives. In the five-minute snippet: North Dakota is nice! Have You Had Your Nutritional Levels Checked?  One of the biggest delays in healing that some people face has to do with the deficiency of vitamins, minerals, and other dietary nutrients. Many doctors check their patients for iron deficiency, but fail to check other essential nutrients like vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, selenium, zinc, chromium, B-vitamins, etc. Failure to address nutritional deficiencies can lead to delayed healing and delayed response to a gluten free diet.On this week's episode of Dr. Osborne's Zone, we are going to be breaking down how to understand nutritional deficiencies in more detail, and more importantly, how to TEST so you don't have to GUESS! Remember that proper nutrition is the key to healing. If you are lacking any essential nutrients, your body will not be able to properly heal and your progress on a gluten free diet will be hindered. I have seen patients completely fail to respond to a gluten free diet because of nutritional deficiencies.Nutrient Deficiency Test Kit: https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/shop/general-health/micronutrient-test-kit/Gluten Free Essentials Bundle: https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/shop/health-focus/daily-wellness/gf-essentials/

Andy has written over 500 articles on content strategy, SEO, AI, social media, and analytics and is the author of Content Chemistry.  In this episode…  Marketers and e-commerce business owners leverage AI mainly for content creation purposes — something customers can accomplish easily themselves. How can you differentiate your brand with innovative, AI-driven content? Rather than developing a prompt to write articles or PDPs, marketer and AI prompt engineer Andy Crestodina recommends having AI analyze a webpage, PDP, or other body of work to identify missing components. This may involve creating prompts detailing whether a PDP meets industry best practices, identifying how to enhance a web page to drive conversions, or determining whether the content meets audience expectations. To take it a step further, you can train the AI to generate ideal customer personas that can influence CTAs, landing pages, and other consumer-facing content. Tune in to this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast as William Harris chats with Andy Crestodina, the Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer at Orbit Media Studios, about revolutionizing AI for CRO. Andy talks about increasing search rankings with AI-driven analytics platforms, how AI will alter internet searches, and AI's potential beyond e-commerce content creation.
