A Halloween Special...Welcome to Word Balloon Theater, where we bring classic radio and record drama back to life — only this time, I'm part of the cast. On this episode, we step into a smoky pool hall, straight out of a 1950s crime picture. I'm your host, John Siuntres, playing opposite one of Hollywood's great voices — Don Ameche. You know Ameche from his Oscar-winning performance in Cocoon, his sharp comic timing in Trading Places, and a career that stretched from golden-age radio to the silver screen. This scene comes from his 1958 Roulette Records album, Co-Star: The Record Acting Game — a clever concept that let fans play a speaking role opposite their favorite stars. In this track, Ameche plays a streetwise hustler working his angles over a crooked game of pool. So chalk up your cue, light a Lucky, and take a seat by the jukebox. You're about to hear a slice of mid-century cool — Don Ameche and John Siuntres in “The Pool Hall.”This… is Word Balloon Theater.

Let's take a trip back to 1939, baby! As I mention in this episode, there's nothing that makes me feel like poor garbage more than watching old films about rich people. But they certainly make up for it with amazing writing and witty jokes that keep me coming back. Plus, I learn rich white stuff, which is always fun. Mail Call was an American radio program that entertained American soldiers from 1942 until 1945, during World War II. Lt. Col. Thomas A.H. Lewis (commander of the Armed Forces Radio Service) wrote in 1944, "The initial production of the Armed Forces Radio Service was 'Mail Call,' a morale-building half hour which brought famed performers to the microphone to sing and gag in the best American manner." The program featured popular entertainers of that day, such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Dinah Shore, performing musical numbers and comedy skits to boost the morale of soldiers stationed far from their homes. Lewis added, "To a fellow who has spent months guarding an outpost in the South Seas, Iceland or Africa a cheery greeting from a favorite comedian, a song hit direct from Broadway, or the beating rhythm of a hot band, mean a tie with the home to which he hopes soon to return Listen to our radio station Old Time Radio https://link.radioking.com/otradio Listen to other Shows at My Classic Radio https://www.myclassicradio.net/ Remember that times have changed, and some shows might not reflect the standards of today's politically correct society. The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jim Ameche (Don's brother) was the first to succeed with a nationally syndicated DJ show in the 1950s. James Ameche (August 6, 1915, Kenosha, Wisconsin – February 4, 1983, Tucson, Arizona) was a familiar voice on radio and long running transcription on AFRTS.
Nostalgia. Its a key component to all of us and our story.Perhaps its a band, a place, or a team that triggers that sentiment. We will seemingly spend anything to recapture that feeling. When my wife & I first moved to Baltimore in 2004, one thing became evident quick: People loved their Baltimore Colts! And when I mean loved...words simply can not explain...You have to see it in the peoples eyes, their body language…How they recount the Colts Coral meetings, the 58 championship game, The teams arrival at BWI, Gino's, Ameche's, and of course the marching band….It brings them back to another time. With football just kicking off the regular season, I thought who better to wet our appetite about it than the Phd of Baltimore Sports (in my opinion at least) Mr. John Ziemann.John, creates a fascinating timeline of football history interwoven with that of his involvement in the Baltimore Colts, now Marching Ravens band, and how music played such an instrumental role in helping a city rebound from a devastating loss, to landing one of the most successful franchises in pro football. Betty and Bob is a radio soap opera. The soap opera followed the lives of Betty and Bob Drake. Betty was a secretary who falls madly in love with her boss, bachelor Bob Drake. The two wed and each day, the subject matter dealt with everything from love to hate, jealousy to divorce, murder to betrayal, and collusion to insanity. The program was the first radio program produced by future daytime radio monarchs Frank and Anne Hummert. The program also began a long partnership between the Hummerts and scriptwriter Robert Hardy Andrews. The program originally starred Elizabeth Reller and Don Ameche in the title roles of Betty and Bob Drake. The role of Bob Drake is credited as the role that made Ameche the "first radio sex symbol". But during the program's eight-year run, four other actresses, including Arlene Francis, portrayed Betty and seven other actors, including Les Tremayne, portrayed Bob.[6][7] According to author John Dunning, ratings for the soap opera plummeted after the addition of the Drake's son Little Bobby. "Raymond William Stedman speculates that listeners refused to accept bickering and jealousy when a child was involved." Little Bobby died of pneumonia and the Drakes divorced. But ratings never did pick up again. The last few years of the program centered on how Betty and Bob grieve over the loss of their son, Bob's relationship with his new girlfriend Pamela Talmadge (portrayed by Ethel Kuhn), and Bob's time in and out of a mental institution. A chorus of Romas asking for new leads, gets the fellas going this week. Even while being a be-sashed mayor of Romaville, Bill still feels a bit uneasy about his wallet. Csonka is giving $5 mustache rides. A couple of “regular” guys discuss satisfying evacuations. Lingk doesn't want to be banished from Romaville. Nothing says “hey fuck you guys” like a Ricky Roma wink. Great meals don't fade in Matt's memory everything else does. The boys talk about how food should just be fuel. Jimmie Lingk isn't sure he's had any “good fucks” to use as a base-line, reference point. As far as Matt is concerned, Ginnie can fuck right off. Bill sees the Roma sit as a classic, boy-meets-chump situation. Bill is afraid to see other productions of Glenngarry because he's a delicate flower. Listen as Matt tries most pronunciations of “Schreiber.” F. Murray Abraham haunts Bill's dreams and to Matt's mind, Bill is dealing with a legit romantic infatuation. It's because of this crush that Bill ushers is into a fun “who would they play.” Matt would give hugs to Ameche all goddamn day. Bill wants to sit on the worst lap ever. The Star Trek folks saved a lot on the Klingon make-up when they cast F. Murray. Matt knows that when Bill is shooting, there are rebound stats to be had. In another great stroke of drink-casting, Dave Moss drinks a Budweiser.
