In December 1918, sports writer and cartoonist Robert Ripley was struggling to find some content for his column in the New York Globe. So he compiled and illustrated some of the quirkiest sports facts from the year and created what would go onto become the ‘Believe It or Not' cartoon. Its popularity grew and, by the time of America's Great Depression, Ripley was a multi-millionaire who would travel the world on his hunt for more weird and wonderful facts. His empire expanded into radio and, in 1940, he persuaded the Duke of Windsor – who had abdicated from the throne in 1936 - to give his first commercial radio appearance.John Corcoran, exhibits director at Ripley's, tells Vicky Farncombe about that historic moment. This programme also includes archive courtesy of the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Archives.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Robert Ripley. Gene and cohost Tim Swartz feature a visit from Paul Seaburn, author of "What Would You Say to a Naked Alien?" The book is a collection of his favorite reports of encounters with quirky extraterrestrials that turned out to be more fun than fearsome, and his thoughts about what he — and you — might do in the same situations. Paul's long, strange trip to paranormal news writing began with a career in tech support, management and sales for two successful computer industry startups. Robert Ripley a jeho Believe it or not je takovým prapůvodcem všech pořadů, článků a výstav, které se věnují kuriozitám, nezvyklým věcem a všemu, co bychom označili za "neuvěřitelné." Do kategorie bizaru by se dal zařadit i Ripleyho život, jeho sbírka a dílo žijí dodnes.

Mars. Mars has fully invaded pop culture, inspiring its own day of the week (Tuesday), an iconic Looney Tunes character, and many novels and movies, from Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles to The Martian. It's this cultural familiarity with the fourth planet that continues to inspire advancements in Mars exploration, from NASA's launch of the Mars rover Perseverance to Elon Musk's quest to launch a manned mission to Mars through SpaceX by 2024. Perhaps, one day, we'll be able to answer the questions our ancestors asked when they looked up at the night sky millennia ago. Or, we'll just listen to this conversation with Marc Hartzman! Author of The Big Book of Mars, Marc describes how Mars has been a source of fascination and speculation ever since the ancient Egyptians observed its blood-red hue and named it for their god of war and plague. But it wasn't until the 19th century when “canals” were observed on the surface of the Red Planet, suggesting the presence of water, that scientists, novelists, filmmakers, and entrepreneurs became obsessed with the question of whether there's life on Mars. If there IS life on Mars, I bet they'll enjoy reading about themselves in Marc's book! Family Life's "Staycation Destinations" A western Pennsylvania golf course has been open for 110 years, but in all that time, it hasn't brought in a dime in green fees. The founder of Buhl Park in the Sharon/Hermitage area thought that the sport of golf taught so many life lessons, he wanted a place where the entire community could learn, play, and become better citizens. This is the only free nine-hole golf course in the nation. The park's executive director Tom Roskos gives us a tour through the genesis of Frank Buhl's dream, how many golfers arrive to shoot a round, and the other recreational and nature opportunities at Buhl Park. - - - - "Staycation Destinations" is our weekly summer series, broadcast each Friday at noon on the radio and online, then posted to our News Podcasts page. Each offers a radio tour of a unique site in Pennsylvania or New York, close to home, relatively inexpensive, and good for a potential day trip or longer visit. Each weekend, we also give you a "Sidetrip Suggestion" another place in our two states which stands out in a unique, quirky, or enlivening way. "The largest living sign" in the world is in New York State's Southern Tier. That is what Robert Ripley (of "Believe It or Not!" fame) called the arrangement of 260 Scotch Pine trees on a hillside behind the Canisteo-Greenwood School at Canisteo, NY. The name of the community first was spelled out in this way by students and their teachers as a school project in 1933.

Poor Thomas was really no different than any of the other disciples. He needed to see the wounds on Jesus' body before he believed. Using the story of Thomas and the creative tales from Robert Ripley — of "Ripley's Believe it or Not" fame, we explore how we have seen the risen Christ in action in our lives and how we can help others see Jesus in the world today.
Robert Ripley started off drawing cartoons for newspapers and soon developed a following that allowed him to explore most of the known world and report back on the weirdest and oddest things Earth had to offer. We talk about early "Freak" shows, the disturbing "Geek" shows and how Ripley's legacy still impacts people today.
The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know that America didn't have an official national anthem until 1931? The same man who drew attention to that in 1929 is the same one we can pretty much credit with creating oddities museums. In this episode, we get to know Robert Ripley and his pioneering influence on the bizarre realm of oddities museums. What started as a comic strip series grew to become books, a radio show, a TV show with several revivals, and Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditoriums around the world, a legacy which has now grown to include over 100 Ripley brand attractions worldwide. And as the saying goes, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Whether they know it or not, Robert Ripley and his odditoriums at least indirectly inspired the existence of these oddities museums that we also explore in this episode: 1. Museum of the Bizarre in Wilmington, North Carolina 2. Museum of the Weird in Austin, Texas 3. Graveface Museum in Savannah, Georgia 4. Glitchy's Oddities in Saskatoon, Canada Kind of like the eclectic collection of unusual artifacts in them --including everything from FeeGee mermaids and shrunken heads, to "freaks of nature," haunted objects, and horror movies props-- oddities museums are a rare breed. Maybe that's what makes them so much fun to visit? Check-In Have you ever visited a Ripley's Believe It or Not museum? Want more Haunt Jaunts? Jaunt with us online anytime at HauntJaunts.net. Horace Ridler, was born in Surrey, England in 1892. After studying at Oxford University he pursued a career in the British Army. At the end of the war Ridler left the military and decided that show business would be his new career path. At some point between 1927 and 1934 he visited famed London based tattooist, George Burchett, with a plan that would transform him into the greatest modern tattoo attraction the world had ever seen. After 500 sittings and 150 hours of tattooing Horace Ridler became The Great Omi. The Great Omi performed with many sideshows including Robert Ripley's Oddotorium and the Ringling Bros., Barnum and Bailey Circus. Shortly before his death in 1969 he was quoted saying "underneath it all, I'm just an ordinary man". ✅ Let's connect: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/unusualweekly Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/unusualweekly Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/unusualweekly YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/unusualasusual Fact Analysis: Although careful research is implemented to assure accurate and correct information, sometimes it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction (or ‘humbug', as P.T. Animal Planet Considers Us for a Show If you haven't seen The Secret it is in the E Center and it is responsible for us being right on track with our 2006 Vision of having our own local series and a series on the Animal Planet show. Locally, our pro bono CPA is on the board of the Community Network Television channels 19 and 22. They are going to train Jamie in video production and then make her an Associate Producer for the station which gives her use of all of their equipment from cameras to editing and then she can air all of her work on their stations. This is all being done for free. AND… Our pro-bono attorney Russ Alba just got the following email: Subject: Television Series Dear Mr. Alba, Thanks for your time. To reiterate...what we'd like to propose to Animal Planet (Discovery Communications Inc.) is a "fly on the wall" series with "Big Cat Rescue" as our venue. This would entail some considerable shooting over a period of time, giving the audience (hopefully world-wide) a "through the keyhole" look at the sanctuary, the animals and the people who devote themselves to this truly noble cause. The series would ultimately be personality driven, the drama, melodrama, comedic and triumphant moments being drawn from the staff, the volunteers...and of course, the animals. While we have proposed the concept to Animal Planet, we have not been specific with venue and style. The final proposal would be based on our having knowledge of what and with whom we're dealing. If this is of interest to you, let's arrange to meet. As I told you, we have a place on Sand Key...and I'm eager to get a bit of Florida summer in my veins. (How's that for madness!!). Looking forward to hearing from you, Best, Ron Lyon For a bit more about us, I refer you to our web site, www.wizardsofweird.com or check IMDb.com. Their credits include: Lyon produced and directed some thirty 90-minute specials for ABC, including “Organized Crime in America”, “Manson”, “Hitler” “In Search of Howard Hughes” and “Assassinations: An American Nightmare” from which came numerous awards. Included among his many television films are the highly rated “City in Fear”, starring David Jannsen and Mickey Rourke, “Love's Savage Fury”, starring Jennifer O'Neill, Raymond Burr and Perry King, “Sins of the Father” starring James Coburn as well as director Jan Kadar's award-winning film, “The Other Side of Hell” which starred Alan Arkin. As President of Ray Stark's television company, “Rastar” a division of Columbia Pictures, Lyon acquired the vast collection of Robert Ripley's “Believe It or Not!” facts and oddities. In 1981 under the banner of Haley/Lyon/Rastar, Lyon created, produced and directed the Ripley's pilot which spawned the long-running series on ABC starring Jack Palance with Lyon based in Paris as Executive Producer. Subsequent to “Believe It or Not” Lyon's special “Exploring Psychic Powers” hosted by Bill Bixby featuring James Randi and Uri Geller was a huge international success. After a stint at both Universal TV and Kings Road (as President, Kings Road Television) he and his partner Jenny Paschall launched the Nickelodeon series “Beyond Belief!!” which appeared in dozens of countries and was later the basis of a best selling book written by Paschall, published by Random House. Jenny Paschall went on to write 3 more “weird” trivia books: Hatches, Matches and Dispatches, Odd Laws and Brain in a Box. Lyon and Paschall's Discovery series “Would You Believe It??” began as a one-hour special/pilot which received spectacular ratings on its June ‘95 premiere on the Discovery Channel. Produced by Lyon and Paschall, directed by Lyon, and written by Paschall this intrepid team's work continued to run on Discovery through 2004. It can be seen in over 60 countries world wide. Based on the success of “Would You Believe It??”, Lyon and Paschall crafted “Simply Unbelievable” a series which debuted on the Travel Channel in 2001. In addition he and Paschall have created many specials for both Discovery and Travel including “Strangest Remains”, ‘Most Haunted in America” “The Best Places To Find UFOs” and “Most Haunted Journeys.” Today, Lyon continues to produce and direct for cable and television networks worldwide. Paschall co-produces with Lyon, and writes the shows. She is also a regular feature writer for the English paper, The Express on Sunday, specializing in trivia and ghost articles, and she has a regular food column in a New Jersey newspaper. Showtime's Ace Award winner Christmas perennial “Daisies in December” is based on a short story by Paschall. Both Lyon and Paschall, as “experts” in the world of the bizarre and the paranormal, lecture throughout the United States as “The Wizards of Weird”. In addition both continue to conduct seminars on producing, directing and writing at both colleges and high schools. http://www.wizardsofweird.com/bios.php The entire 2006 Vision: 2006: Exotic cats may no longer be sold or traded into canned hunts. Action: Meet with legislators in our area, specifically Mike Bilirakis and Senator Bob Young (head of the appropriations committee) and gather the support of non animal groups, such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Big Cat Rescue will become better educated about the legislative process and teach classes on ethics and legislation. We will contact HSUS to find out how the best way to do this will be and to see what training they provide. Big Cat Rescue will train members in ways to gather the information needed to end the cruel trade in exotic cats by demonstrating that so small a percentage of the public approves canned hunts or is supported by canned hunts that the legislation really does represent the majority. The Big Cat Picture will be narrated by a celebrity, widely distributed via sales, public and private showings and the website. We will edit the clips to load faster and play better or switch to streaming media for maximum effect. Big cats will have protection under state laws in all states in that they may not be owned as pets. Action: Big Cat Rescue will provide better state, county and city level resources to educate and enable our expanded supporter base to create laws that better protect the exotic cats. In part this will be on Big Cat Rescue's own Animal Planet program called Big Cat Rescue which will showcase big cat rescues by accredited sanctuaries. These weekly segments will include discussion of all of the issues that exotic cats face, expose the perpetrators and the effect that each person makes with their choices and will be a means by which to broadly spread the message that no exotic cat should be kept as a pet or in a cage. We will film anything and everything that could make for an interesting 30 minute television documentary. Big Cat Rescue will solicit video from other accredited sanctuaries for use in exposing the big cat issues. We will find someone in the film editing industry to help us turn these segments into something saleable to Animal Planet. By suggesting permits, permit fees and substantial fines for non compliance we can insure that the laws have the funding needed to make them effective. Once game farms are no longer licensed to keep exotic cats the exotic cat pet owners who circumvent the pet laws by keeping exotic cats under the guise of a game farm will be unable to renew their permits. This decreases the number of buyers for their offspring significantly. The Sanctuary Standards and Exotic Cat Standards will be accepted as the guidelines for exotic animal care and used as a model for the new laws. Big Cat Rescue will introduce a federal bill to prevent the trade in all exotic cats across state lines as pets. Big Cat Rescue will continue to encourage implementation of the federal bill The Captive Wildlife Safety Act signed Dec. 19, 2003 that makes it illegal to breed, buy, sell or donate a big cat as a pet across state lines. We will continue to research and work on making the breeding, buying and selling of exotic cats at a state level illegal. We will research ways to close the USDA permit loopholes that allow private pet owners to pay $40.00 to call themselves a commercial enterprise in order to circumvent the law.
Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! was one of the most popular radio shows of the 1930s, and for good reason: Early radio, not unlike the Internet of nearly a century later, was obsessed with doubt about belief. On this episode of The Last Archive, Jill Lepore spins the dial and takes a tour of 1930s radio — from Robert Ripley to Charlie Chan, from Mexican broadcaster Pedro González to the shows of Orson Welles: the full spectrum of true and false on the air. EPISODE 343 In the 14th annual Bowery Boys Halloween podcast, we celebrate some classic strange and supernatural terrors written by the most famous horror writers in New York City history. Since 2020 is already a year full of absurd twists and frights, we thought we'd celebrate the season in a slightly different way. Don't worry! Tom and Greg are delivering a new batch of frightening stories. But this time the selected stories have been made famous by great writers who have lived and worked in New York City. Included in this year's terrors: -- A celebration of the 200th anniversary of Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," featuring the Headless Horseman and the backstory of this classic story's creation; -- The unsettling days of H.P. Lovecraft in Brooklyn where his xenophobia, racism and anxiety manifest into a pair of dark, claustrophobic tales, plucked from the waterfront and the West Village; -- A bizarre and allegedly true story (or is it an urban legend?) of an unconventional jewel thief, made famous by that 20th century purveyor of all things unbelievable -- Robert Ripley; -- And a look at the life of Patricia Highsmith -- celebrating the 100th anniversary of her birth a bit early -- whose nasty little tales of mad murderers have inspired Hollywood and unsettled a new generation of suspense lovers. Ripley's Believe It or Not! was a newspaper panel (and adapted to Radio, TV and many other formats) written by Robert Ripley that dealt in bizarre events and items so strange and unusual that readers might question the claims. As believers, we all experience seemingly impossible things: healings, deliverance, making a way when there is no way. If we had not experienced it ourselves, we would not believe it. Do we still believe these things? How easy it is to fall into unbelief. As children, we have vivid imaginations. Children believe that anything is possible. When do they move from that state to a state of unbelief? When life happens, it becomes more difficult to live by faith. In our text, the father of the child struck by the dumb spirit had lived with that condition since he was a small child. After years and years, the belief that God would heal him began to fade. It is easy to believe in God when faith is new, but when the struggles of life come along, it becomes more difficult. It is difficult to have the faith that we encourage others to have when we ourselves began to experience a storm in life. It is not that we do not believe in God’s ability or that he is willing. We convince ourselves that this is just the way that it is meant to be. We like to walk around saying that we are a believer, but do we really believe it? Do we believe that He is able to heal? Do we believe that He is able to restore? More than that, do we believe that He WILL do those things. There is more to being a believer than just believing that there is One God. That is a great thing to believe, but there is more. Some wear the title believer as a badge of honor. That it somehow entitles us to special treatment. The Bible tells us that the devil also believes the one god message. It is not enough. In our text, the man believed, but there was still something more. He asks Jesus to forgive his unbelief. We have to do more than just say “I believe”, but to live as we believe. We have to be more than hearers of the word but become doers of the word. Just saying we are a believer is meaningless if we do not live like a believer.

Back in 1927, Time magazine wanted to find a way to honor Charles Lindbergh, the 67th man to cross the Atlantic by air. (See my Robert Ripley article on Skeptoid for why he was 67th.) They created the “Man of the Year” edition, and the tradition has stuck with us. It was no surprise when […]
We examine Believe it or Not! and determine if we can believe this stuff.

Amelia Earhart to fly solo around the world! Big news then, big news now and Ripley Radio this week talks with the “new” Earhart as she plans her 28,000 mile journey. The 31-year old tells Ralf that with the name her parents gave her, she was destined to be a pilot. Most of us never have a near-death experience, but Brooklyn’s Robert Kopecky has had three and he tells Tim that each one was different and each taught him a different lesson. He shares those lessons with us and talks about his new book, “How to Survive Life and Death.” Additional Weird, Wacky, and Strange Stories on the April 14 Episode of Ripley Radio, the official radio program of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!: On Wednesday, April 16, Mezco Toyz, the creators of the popular Living Dead Dolls will be displaying a time capsule full of product from the 16-year history of the doll series at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Times Square, New York City. The capsule coffin will be interred and opened in 66.6 years. We hear more about this crazy publicity stunt from a company representative; Ripley archivist Edward Meyer notes how surprised he has been that Robert Ripley never wrote or drew anything about Amelia Earhart during his long career, but the company has since acquired several, which are now on display at the San Diego Air and Space Museum; Jodi Pliszka describes this week’s Weird Medical Malady as Hyper Empathy; Florida TV reporter Scott Fais gives us an alternative to a traditional church for Easter service this year, a drive-in church with plenty of coffee and doughnuts for everyone; and we hear that the Doomsday Seed Bank has added 20,000 new varieties of seeds, including 600 types of beer barley seeds!
Gail Rubin’s slightly irreverent but quite practical look at death and funerals led her to be a part of this year’s Frozen Dead Guy Festival where she unveiled her new game, the NewlyDead Game. This week on Ripley Radio – An On-Demand Oddcast, the official radio station of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, she talks with us about how to plan for your own funeral in a fun way.Other Unbelievable items discussed on the August 12 edition of Ripley Radio: Ripley’s favorite witch, Judika Illes talks about the recent edict from the Catholic Church about witches; Intern Kyle examines the Doomsday Seed Bank in Norway; Tim visits with sideshow legend 83-year old Ward Hall (seen at right in this amazing photo taken by Norman Blake) who talks about the importance of the sideshow talker, or the Bally, in any midway show; We find out what happened to the 100,000 t-shirts that were printed listing the wrong Super Bowl Champion (sorry Pittsburgh); We learn about the extensive collection of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! death-oriented exhibits, including Fantasy Coffins, the gallows from Chicago’s Cook County Jail, and the gas chamber chair from San Quentin Prison; and we are told that Robert Ripley’s last word spoken was AMEN, just before he collapsed on live television during a show on funeral customs. He died two days later. Our musical egress this week is the summer-time sound of Link Wray with his surf classic XKE Fender Benders.
Look around at our culture today. Oddity is all around us. Reality television takes us to the fringes of human behavior. The Supermarket tabloids provide a freak show we secretly devour, while waiting in line. We seem to seek comfort, or perhaps reinforce our own sense of normalcy, by seeing the extremes of others. Perhaps the first to understand this was not a psychologist or psychiatrist, but a man named Robert Ripley. We know him as the man who created Ripley’s Believe It or Not. In fact, in understanding Ripley, we understand a little bit more about America. Acclaimed biographer Neal Thompson, has written a compelling biography A Curious Man: The Strange and Brilliant Life of Robert "Believe It or Not!" Ripley. My conversation with Neal Thompson:
Believe It or Not, during the 20th century, frozen whale carcasses were big draws on the circus and carnival midways! Historian James Taylor visits this week and talks about frozen whales, live whales and exploding whales. Mark Oswald wraps up his series on natural oddities and unbelievable sights at US National Parks, by telling us about the opportunity to walk right up to the crater of an active volcano. More amazing, unbelievable and bizarre stories on the May 6 episode of Ripley Radio, the official radio program of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! include: Ryan DeSear, manager of Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tenn., tells Ralf about the new Dinosaur exhibit that will be on display through the end of the year; Neal Thompson, the author of the new biography of Robert Ripley, “A Curious Man,” talks about his research and the amazing facts he uncovered about the curious man; and Stephen Stills provides the musical egress this week with Marianne.
It's our first birthday and it's our TRIVIACEPTION show! Believe it or not, amazing facts about the king of amazing facts, Robert Ripley. The business behind bad trivia. We try our luck in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and gush over other TV game shows. Famous riddlers and question-askers throughout literary history, and exactly why is a raven like a writing desk? ALSO: "Initial Here" quiz
Believe It or Not!, several US cities want to steal the “Icebox of the Nation” moniker from International Falls, Minn.. Chad Lewis joins us this week and tells us about the challenge from these upstarts. A person’s ashes from cremation aren’t just for urns anymore. Angela explains that all sorts of artistic uses have been created for cremains, including blown glass paper weights and vinyl records. Other Strange Stories on the February 4 Episode of Ripley Radio: George Holscher tells us about the 300-game he bowled – from his wheelchair, becoming only the second person to ever do so; award-winning TV reporter Scott Fais reports on the very off-the-beaten-path location of a private monkey island in Florida; Huffington Post editor Buck Wolf unveils the top weird stories the popular website carried during 2012; and sideshow historian James Taylor recalls the life story of sideshow performer Johnny Eck, the legless man who Robert Ripley once called, “the most amazing man in the world.” The Zombies auditory artifact from 1969, Time of the Season, is this week’s musical egress.

The triathlon, where contestants swim, bike and run for various lengths are quite common. What’s uncommon is to have an athlete juggle balls during all three events. Believe It or Not!, that’s what Joe Salter did and Ralf caught up with him afterward for a fun chat. P.T. Barnum made the Dime Museum of the late 1800s a popular attraction to visit for the entire family. These storefront “museums” displayed wild and weird specimens, plus bizarre and strange human acts. As they were fading in popularity in the early 1930s, Robert Ripley patterned his very first Odditorium after these early expositions and took the presentation up several notches. Sideshow historian James Taylor provides the fascinating evolution of the genre in which Ripley still excels today!
