In this episode of Mutual Exchange Radio, host Zachary Woodman interviews Jesse Spafford. Jesse is a Research Fellow at Trinity College Dublin working on the project REAL - Rights and Egalitarianism. His research is focused on social and political philosophy with particular attention paid to debates between libertarians, socialists, and anarchists over the moral status of the market and the state. Jesse espouses a version of left-libertarianism that's quite different from what you’ll hear promoted by many here at the Center—a philosophical position that holds that certain moral principles traditionally associated with libertarianism are compatible with egalitarian views about the distribution of resources. It's a great episode for libertarians and anarchists alike. As Zach and Jesse dig into these differences and discuss what a stateless society should look like, you'll find yourself questioning all kinds of prior assumptions.  Further Reading: "Social Anarchism and the Rejection of Private Property," The Routledge Handbook of Anarchy and Anarchist Thought "Does Initial Appropriation Create New Obligations?"  Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy (jesp.org)

Zach Galifianakis had his big moment of success a bit later than most. Zach was a stand-up comedian with a small but loyal following, but when the massive hit comedy The Hangover came out, his life drastically changed. At 40 years old, Zach was unaccustomed to throngs of fans and perplexed by the attention brought by fame. As he says, “No one wanted to hear me speak or ask my opinion until I got into the movies. That doesn’t make any sense.”Zach’s down to earth approach to life likely originated with his family—a naturally funny and supportive crowd who encouraged Zach to follow his dreams of performing at an early age. After school, he moved to New York City to find an acting coach who could take him under their wing and provide an entrance into the business. Success wasn’t imminent though. As Zach says, “I worked for an uncle who managed a restaurant called Tequila Willie’s, where I had to wear a sombrero and pick up my tips off the kitchen room floor. Have you ever been on the kitchen floor on your hands and knees picking up quarters with a sombrero on? It’s very uplifting. Especially, when you’re still a busboy at 28.” Zach never found his long sought after acting coach but instead discovered stand up in the back of a burger restaurant, and never looked back.Even with his roles in big budget films, Zach continues to take on interesting, outside the box projects—whether it’s being a fake talk show host in the Netflix movie adaptation of Between Two Ferns or doing impromptu stand-up at a steakhouse in Pasadena. Over the course of our conversation, you’ll realize Zach’s honesty and modesty is as endearing as it is hilarious, as awkward as it is intimate.Zach joins Off Camera to talk about his favorite Between Two Ferns moment, his mission to take the piss out of “celebrity,” and why you should dress up as a witch and go find him on the streets of Venice if you want to have a nice ten-minute conversation.

How Zach got started Zach, from Old Technology, got started when his friends in the tree service started giving him the trees they were removing from properties. He first invested in a chainsaw mill to start milling these trees, then bought a kiln for drying and is now producing his own furniture from his wood. Originally a general contractor with a passion in woodworking, as interest grew he was able to go full-time. Investing in Equipment The first piece of equipment Zach invested in was a backhoe to assist with the removal of the trees. As the trees started to pile up in his yard he found a lot and started milling and air-drying the wood. The game changer for Zach was buying an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill. It meant they could mill the trees on-site, in places that were inaccessible to heavy equipment and would be able to get the wood out. How Zach funded the business Zach's business was all self funded. He began with savings and then as he started selling wood, reinvested the money in his business. This was a long road requiring a lot of patience but Zach was determined to work within his means. He continued to work as a general contractor during this time as he built the business. As Zach gained experience and found clients, things started to snowball and he had to turn down contracting jobs in order to work on the business. Going full-time in the business was the natural next step. The Most Profitable Part of Zach's Business In partnership with tree service companies, Zach provides a 'mill and return' service to the home owner where he mills the tree and returns it to the homeowner. These trees have been apart of the home and have history. This service enables homeowners to keep a piece of that. He finds that the tree services have a lot of success selling his milling services to home owners. His company also makes a lot of high end furniture and make commercial furniture for restaurants and coffee shops. How Zach Markets his Business Unusually, Old Technology does not have a website. They do have an Instagram and find that 50% of contact comes via Instagram with word of mouth being the other main source of leads.   The Equipment Zach uses Panther MillCannon BarsStihl MS 880Granberg Ripping Chain   Does Zach want a bigger mill? Zach is currently running a sawmill business with an Alaskan mill. Although Zach would like a bigger mill in the future, they are currently investing money in other areas such as a kiln and a CNC machine. He is then looking to purchase a Lucas or a Peterson mill.   How Zach is planning to grow  He has recently moved into a new warehouse with a full service wood and metal shop. They are transforming part of it into a slab showroom and will also have a showroom for finished furniture.   Old Technology Instagram https://www.instagram.com/old_technology/?hl=en

Perk Health is a website and app that helps you pick up healthier habits in a way that is sustainable. Zach McGill and Doug DeBold grew up playing sports. Games taught them so much: achievement, competition, leader boards, point scoring, rewards, rules of play, self-expression, socializing, mastery, and status. When it was time for college, Doug went off to college in Vermont while Zach attended the University of Minnesota. Initially, Zach studied engineering. He wanted to invent things. But, he says, “I realized, with engineering, there would be less inventing and lot more equations.” So, he started studying entrepreneurship. “It became clear to me that my path was going to be to start and build companies.” Zach built side businesses while he was in school. He became involved with the Acara Institute at the University of Minnesota. He traveled to New Delhi where he and a team developed a business plan to build a small biogas plant. The proposed plant would reduce greenhouse gasses while providing reliable access to electricity. As Zach’s project in India came to a close, he had a decision to make. Did he want to move to Delhi and pursue his business idea, or did he want to grow another side project he had, Perk Health? He chose Perk Health. And to help him grow and scale it, he partnered with his childhood friend, Doug DeBold. Perk Health helps individuals to develop healthy habits. If you look back 100 years ago, people in the United States died mainly of influenza, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. Today, Americans die primarily from lifestyle diseases including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. 73% of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of physical activity. Inactivity, diet, and obesity kill more people in the US than any communicable disease. As a result, 86% of our healthcare spending can be traced back to these lifestyle factors. Employers who use Perk Health can lower healthcare costs, increase productivity and decrease absenteeism. Perk health delivers their products through a virtual system, which can be cost effective. The Perk Health app retains over ten times the engagement of traditional wellness programs. Perk Health tailors the program to each individual, making it easy and fun to participate. Episode 078: What It Takes To Launch

The Mind Your Business Podcast

On today’s episode, James talks with Online Business Strategist Zach Spuckler about the major mindset shifts he has made over the last year that’s enabled him to grow his business exponentially. Zach also shares an effective alternative to doing a really big launch, which you won’t want to miss! When Zach first joined James’ Inner Circle Mastermind a year ago, he worked by himself and had just hit the 6-figure mark in his business. He now has a team made up of multiple people, but notes that it was the inner work he did that allowed him to expand to this. Zach admits that he used to be a workaholic, and that his health started to suffer because of this. He had to step back and ask himself why he originally wanted to start the business, which was to have freedom. Here are just a few of his major breakthroughs: Hire a team Hiring his first VA helped give Zach the systems, and space to grow. During his last launch, he realized that hiring was never an external issue, but he was so busy working that he didn’t know internally what he really wanted. He says that it’s not difficult to find exactly what you want when looking for someone to help; be clear about what you want and need, and put it out to your online community! James believes it’s important to ask yourself what it’s costing you to not hire someone. How could you fill that time and space by doing something else that focuses on the big vision of your company and drives revenue? The internal struggle may get quieter at the level you’re at, but it will start back up again at the next level and will always be there in some form or another. When you think that you’re ready to hire somebody, Zach recommends you trust yourself to take the risk and to handle the fallout if it doesn’t work out, or find people to support you if this should happen. James feels it’s important to know that a lot of people have an illusion that they have to get rid of the fear around hiring or investing in themselves before doing it, but this just isn’t the case. Entrepreneurs are rewarded for taking the risks Remember that other people will love doing the tasks that you assign them, and you don’t have to feel guilty for giving them work. Zach says it was important for him to understand that his team wouldn’t resent him for this and they respect him for giving them work and paying them for their time. As an entrepreneur, you can actually enjoy your life and business, while at the same time empowering your team to grow with you! James likes to remind others that part of the “work” is actually resting so that you can recharge yourself. Charge more money As Zach has “levelled up,” he charges more so that he can create intimacy with his higher-level clients. By charging more, he also attracts the right clients. If you don’t increase your prices, he says that the only thing you’re doing is de-valuing yourself in the process. James adds that so often people base their pricing on what people will pay for the product or service, which can be a mistake as there will always be people that can, or can’t afford it at every level. Zach realizes that as his business grows, everything he does has an opportunity cost and his time is limited. He is careful not to undercharge so that he can continue to serve others through his business. Pricing really comes down to valuing yourself and it’s important to have a logical conversation with yourself and know the true value of what you can offer. There’s an easier (and lighter) way to launch Zach notes that so many people get paralyzed by the thought of launching. Webinars can take many months to perfect, and video series can be expensive and time consuming. You don’t have to get overwhelmed though; by doing a challenge (or a “week long event” as Zach likes to call it), you don’t even have to charge people money for them to have the opportunity to see what it’s like to work with you. When doing a challenge, you just have to show up, give them simple step-by-step tasks and let them prove to themselves, and you, that transformation is possible. Remember, people want to be sold to on the last day of the event, just because you’ve shown them what’s possible. Show your audience what you can do for them and let them decide if you’re a great fit or not! Submit Your Question! LINKS: Plan & Build Your 5-Day $10,000 Challenge-Style Launch

Zach Skow is founder of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue in Tehachapi, California. Several years ago, Zach was dying of liver and kidney failure from his struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction. Amazingly, several months after a very low point for him, Zach’s health improved. He no longer required an organ transplant, and now lives alcohol and drug-free. His only drugs are Veg-E-Tables. Zach credits his survival to his rescue dogs Marley and Tug, along with his father’s love and support. As Zach says, “a pit bull saved my life.” Marley is a Rottweiler-Pit Bull mix. Join Dave , The Caregiver's Caregiver, as he interviews Carol Shockley, a successful business owner, Shockley Event Management.  She works with speakers who educate, motivate, and inspire entrepreneurs along their own journey's. My son has always had behavioral problems growing up.  As a mother we have unique intuitions.  I felt that he had been sexually assaulted but couldn't prove it.  I had been sexually assaulted as a child by my brother and never shared it with anyone til I was in my mid 20's.   My son as a child was verbally and slightly physically abused by his dad. I had him arrested when Zach was 2 and we worked through the system on their relationship but still Zach was hard to handle with his outburts. As Zach got older he continue to be socially awkward and behind in his social skill set even through high school.   During the year prior to jail time. I had him forensically evaluated to understand his thinking and mindset.  What came out of it was a barrier... Zach had been sexually assaulted by brother. Not one blow to us but now a second one.  Zach started counseling immediately for the year every week.  He continues in prison to go to counseling, take mental health classes, and college course as well as work half days.   As a mom, I grieved and hard.  It has taken 1.5 / 2 years to fully understand and work through the pain, the loss, the future, the present, and make the necessary separations in relationships. It has brought out anger, sadness, grief, mourning, compassion, empathy, and reality for others.  It has enlightened me to the needs in society. We need each other.  My son has completed 1 yr 3 mos and has 2 yrs 9 mos left to complete in prison.

Zach Bitter: 100-Mile World Record

*I welcome my old friend Zach Bitter to the show to talk about all things related to peak performance and endurance. Zach is the host of the Human Performance Outliers podcast and is definitely honoring the show title with his amazing ultrarunning performances. He is the world record holder at 100 miles with an astonishing time of 11 hours, 19 minutes, which equates to running 6 min, 48 seconds per mile all day long!* Go try running one mile at that pace, and then repeat 100 times! Zach also busted the world record for 100 miles on a treadmill, so don’t complain that you get “bored” after 42 minutes at the gym. Zach has also long been a leader in fat-adapted endurance training, having discovered that a nutrient-dense, low carbohydrate diet helps him recover faster and also gives him a performance edge during ultramarathon competitions because he doesn’t require as many on-board calories as when he was a high carb athlete. Zach was a participant in the FASTER study (Fat Adapted Substrate utilization in Trained Elite Runners) where groundbreaking discoveries were made for the potential of humans to burn fat during exercise at a higher rate than previously thought possible. We get into a bit of science about athletic performance, but the best part of this episode is hearing about Zach’s methodical approach to peak performance and his evolved, process-oriented approach. He loves the challenge of ultrarunning, loves pushing the edges of human endurance performance, but has a healthy competitive disposition and strives to lead a balanced life. Enjoy listening to this super informative show with Zach, and if you’re interested in connecting with him for coaching, check out his website here ( https://zachbitter.com/ ). *TIMESTAMPS:* Zach Bitter is a world record holding runner who ran 100 miles in 11 hours and 19 minutes. He’s going to talk about his training diet. [01:50] As Zach got more serious about his ultramarathon training, he learned more about nutrition. [05:25] Even a strong “healthy” young athlete has energy swings that are not good for him. [08:28] There is not just one way to do this dietary journey. [10:31] Look at the individual plan rather than the group plan for diet and training to see what is best for you. [14:59] Zach uses his training as a school teacher in his coaching work. Treat people as individuals, not by throwing them into one group. [20:04] What was happening in the sport of ultra-marathon in 2010 when Zach got into it? The sport has grown massively. [25:27] Zach fills us in on his succession of breaking records with him amazing times. [31:11] Running on a flat track, Zach was averaging 06:47:05 per mile when he broke the world record. [35:12] If you have a bad race, don’t waste time with a pity party. Think about how to use that experience to help me improve for next time. [38:52] In 2011, Zach started to examine his diet and wanted to see if he could enhance his diet to accommodate his difficult workouts. He talks about his race fueling strategies. [42:36] Here in the year 2020, with so much sports nutrition information, we are still seeing many severe gastrointestinal problems in elite athletes. [51:26] The diet transformation had a huge improvement in terms of his recovery. He had swollen ankles. [54:19] Mike McKnight ran a hundred of miles with no calories.
