What are unloved movie masterpieces? Well, they are the films that get rated the lowest by critics and audiences. Sometimes they can be downright bad, other times they are simply very challenging.   Who better to join this very first English movie draft on Thumb Wrestling, than two avid defenders of movies that have received too little praise in the past. Veteran podguests Theodoor Steen and Ashley Walker return, to shine a new bright light on titles that can use all the love they can get.   You can find the lists and vote on: http://www.thumbwrestling.nl    To get to these lists, we played a movie draft!   The game: three candidates pick a movie one by one. Six categories must be filled, and each movie can be selected only once in the whole game. Also, after every round of picks, we reverse the order in which we can choose a movie. The objective is to get the best list together of six movies.   Who do you think made the best picks?   Hey, you want to support this podcast? Bio (January 2023) Dr. Ashley R Walker is a pharmacist, entrepreneur, and an advocate. Dr. Walker holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and a Bachelors of Science in Biotechnology from Rochester Institute of Technology. She has been a pharmacist for 7 years and recently transitioned into full time entrepreneurship. Prior to her transition, she has had experience in retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and long term care pharmacy. Her recent transition into full time entrepreneurship has led to the birth of her business Med Max Consulting, LLC. Under this business, Dr. Walker can advocate for members of the deaf and hard of hearing community as well as offer medication counseling services to help this unique community maximize and optimize their medication therapy. Since her high school years, Dr. Walker has been an advocate for members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. She spends time speaking to students in elementary, middle, and high school encouraging them to never let their hearing loss be a reason not to dream big and go after their dreams. As a deaf person herself, she also helps business owners and healthcare professionals make their businesses/practices inclusive to members of this unique community. Dr. Walker enjoys reading, traveling, going on walks with her family, and attending festivals. With her personal experiences as a deaf pharmacist and advocate for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community she aims to remind the world that deafness should not be viewed as a DIS-ability but rather a UNIQUE-ability. When Dr. Ashley Walker (University of Oregon) began to study sex differences with vascular aging and cognitive decline, she and her team went to the literature for guidance on research study design to account for the confounding variable of estrous cycle in young female mice. Problem: There were no recommendations in the literature. Solution: The Walker Lab got to work. In our latest episode, Dr. Amanda LeBlanc (University of Louisville) interviews lead author Dr. Ashley Walker and first author Ms. Mackenzie Kehmeier (University of Oregon), along with expert Dr. Sarah Lindsey (Tulane University) about the novel study by Kehmeier et al. – the first of its kind – to show that the impact of estrogen on vascular stiffness changes with each day of the female mouse estrous cycle. The authors found that estrous phase was associated with lower in vivo large artery stiffness in mice, but ex vivo resistance artery endothelial function was not different between estrous cycle phases. Kehmeier et al. determined that estrogen receptor expression is modulated by the estrous cycle in an artery dependent manner, which means that estrous cycle phase in young female mice should be considered when measuring in vivo arterial stiffness. What techniques do the authors recommend for other investigators to best determine accurate staging of the estrous cycle? Listen to find out.   Mackenzie N. Kehmeier, Bradley R. Bedell, Abigail E. Cullen, Aleena Khurana, Holly J. D'Amico, Grant D. Henson, Ashley E. https://youtu.be/fFIlz3Z9WIA Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain )Special Guest: Gravitational lensing has been used to discover far-distant galaxies that are obstructed from view thanks to the inconvenient positioning of astronomical interlopers. Recently, researchers have begun asking if this same lensing technique could be adapted to use the gravity of OUR SUN to suss out never-before seen details of the more than 5000 exoplanets discovered to date. It is thought that by aligning the sun in a straight line between a space-based telescope and an exoplanet, exoplanet images could be obtained. But this would require a lot of fuel and time.   Tonight's guest is Alexander Madurowicz, PhD candidate at Stanford University. Alex has developed an algorithm that reconstructs an exoplanet's surface using a single, annular image acquired by looking directly at the sun. Light from this ring is then undistorted by reversing its having been bent by the gravitational lens (i.e., our Sun,) which yields the ring of light being turned back into a whole, round planet. This method of imaging exoplanets was presented in a paper published in The Astrophysical Journal on May 2, 2022. [https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10...]   Alex Madurowicz is a Physics PhD candidate at Stanford University. His research interests are in astronomical instrumentation, specifically for the direct imaging of extrasolar planets. He works with his advisor Bruce Macintosh and other collaborators from universities around the world on the Gemini Planet Imager project.   The Gemini Planet Imager combines adaptive optics and coronagraphy to correct distortions from Earth's atmosphere and obscure noise from host stars to directly observe planets which millions of times fainter than the stars they orbit. He has also worked on speculative instrument designs such as star shades and the solar gravitational lens which could revolutionize the future of exoplanet imaging.   You can read more about this technique here: https://phys.org/news/2022-05-scienti... Before the MCU Iron Man, before Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, even before Roger Corman's Fantastic Four, there was one project that can truly claim to be the very first Marvel feature ever. And that little movie is called Howard the Duck. It was a box office bomb for the ages, but it also has its fans. And one of them is film critic Ashley Walker. A talking, child-sized waterfowl gets accidentally sucked into our dimension. And there he finds himself in a situation where he has to save the world. Or can he wisecrack himself out of that one? Howard gets help from a young musician, played by Lea Thomson, and from future Oscar winner Tim Robbins. Podguest Ashley almost surprises themself by how how much they know about this movie. And there are a lot of fun trivia to sink our teeth into. Even now, new stories keep cropping up about Howard the Duck and its disastrous production. And then we haven't even gotten into all of the awful duck puns... Hunkering Down With Peter Schorsch

Peter Schorsch hunkers down with Ashley Walker, managing director of Mercury Public Affairs. Walker is one of the most influential consultants in Democratic politics in Florida. Previously, she worked as the Florida state director for former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign. Walker talks campaigning in the age of coronavirus. As Florida and the world continues to keep their eye on the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional campaigning has all but shut down. She discusses the challenges with fundraising and highlights the advantage that incumbents have during this time. As for public affairs in general though, Walker describes an ongoing need, particularly as governments, as she describes it, pick and choose winners and losers in terms of who gets access to aid and funding. Still, her firm is hyper aware of the longterm effects a COVID-related economic crisis could have on everyone. Walker also discusses the potential of holding elections this year 100% through mail ballots and whether that’s an advantage for Republicans in Florida who have long dominated the vote-by-mail game. Walker is also expecting a child in just a couple of weeks. She describes the moment the virus first got real for her at a routine doctor’s appointment, the first her husband was not allowed to attend with her, in which her doctor questioned whether a routine vaccine she needed for her advanced age pregnancy was worth the risk of going to a pharmacy to get it. Tune in for a don’t miss episode packed with personal moments, political commentary and Walker’s token reassuring demeanor. Special Guest: Ashley Walker.
