Mike Murray, Director of Community Outreach for Pet Food Express and the person in charge of the Bay Area Pet Fair, is our talented guest today. The Bay Area Pet Fair is the largest animal rescue event of its kind on the West Coast of the United States, and very likely the whole country (and possibly the entire solar system?). We discuss last year’s extremely successful event and what to look forward to this year. Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, 2018. Alameda County Fairgrounds, Pleasanton, California. 10:00am to 5:00pm. Free admission and parking. Last year, there were over 140,000 animal lovers in two days looking for a wonderful new companion. Around 1,500 adoptions! Great live music, delicious food, Splash Dogs, Police K-9 demos, even Jackson Galaxy from My Cat From Hell! Dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, rodents, and you may even spot a miniature horse rescue. Dr. Danielle Boyd is our incredible guest today. She is a veterinarian in the middle of her ophthalmology residency in San Antonio, Texas. She is known for being the amazing human companion to a beautiful dog named Squish whose story has gone completely viral through The Dodo, Rachael Ray, and many other features in print, social media, and television. Squish’s story began as a puppy when he suffered blunt force trauma to the head. With the help of rescue organizations and surgeons, they saved Squish’s life. He lost an eye and lives with a famously crooked jaw, which his fans cannot stop sharing about through photos, videos, and news articles. Some of his fans even share original drawings and other artwork! A lot of animals would not have survived this far in the journey. Learn how an encounter between Dr. Danielle Boyd and “A Pup Named Squish” made a big difference. Pawprint | animal rescue podcast for dog, cat, and other animal lovers
After adopting an Irish sight hound, her dog Lily, Laura Schenone discovers a remarkable and little-known fight to gain justice for dogs and for all animals. Greyhounds, bred to be the fastest dogs on earth, are beautiful, gentle, and astonishing creatures. Yet for decades, countless numbers of them have been abandoned and destroyed every year once they can no longer compete and win. The Dogs of Avalon introduces us to the strong-willed Marion Fitzgibbon, born in rural Ireland, where animals are valued for their utility. But Fitzgibbon believes suffering is felt by all creatures and champions the cause of strays, baffling those around her—including her family—as she, and a group of local women rescue any animal in need, taking on increasingly risky missions. Author and former U.S. Marine Craig Grossi shares the story behind his book “Craig & Fred: A Marine, A Stray Dog, And How They Rescued Each Other.” Goes on sale Tuesday, October 31, 2017! In 2010, Sergeant Craig Grossi was doing intelligence work for Marine RECON—the most elite fighters in the Corps—in a remote part of Afghanistan. While on patrol, he spotted a young dog "with a big goofy head and little legs" who didn’t seem vicious or run in a pack like most strays they’d encountered. After eating a piece of beef jerky Craig offered—against military regulations—the dog began to follow him. "Looks like you made a friend," another Marine yelled. Grossi heard, "Looks like a 'Fred.'" The name stuck, and a beautiful, life-changing friendship was forged. Fred not only stole Craig’s heart; he won over the RECON fighters, who helped Craig smuggle the dog into heavily fortified Camp Leatherneck in a duffel bag—risking jail and Fred’s life. With the help of a crew of DHL workers, a sympathetic vet, and a military dog handler, Fred eventually made it to Craig’s family in Virginia. Sherri Franklin, Founder and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, shares her journey in animal rescue at the Rescue Think Tank as she celebrates Muttville’s Tenth Anniversary. Sherri Franklin, a long-time animal advocate and shelter volunteer, founded Muttville in 2007 to save the lives of the older dogs that were considered “unadoptable” and routinely euthanized in area shelters. Working from her house, she saved 27 dogs that first year. She said she “wanted to make senior dogs sexy,” and in fact, has turned the organization into a Bay Area favorite and a national model. In 2010, Sherri received the Jefferson Award for Public Service, which recognizes those who “inspire others to service.” In 2016, CNN named Sherri a CNN Hero.
