Hark! Season 3 debuts with a crowd favorite- “O Holy Night.” Born as a French poem in 1843, and set to music a few years later, this carol was banned for two decades from the Catholic Mass. It resurfaced in the hands of a Unitarian minister in the U.S. and became an anthem for abolitionists before the Civil War. It is also the song that you, our listeners, have overwhelmingly asked us to feature on Hark! Conductor Colin Britt returns to the show to unwrap the soaring verses and repeating leaps and skips in the music. Daniel Williams, professor of American religion and politics and author of several books on related subjects, narrates how “O Holy Night” has helped to shape Christmas culture in 19th-century America. Finally, Greg Boyle, S.J. of Homeboy Industries, shares with host Maggi Van Dorn the profound meaning this beloved carol has for him.  The episode features a brand new recording of “O Holy Night” performed by the renowned choir of King's College, Cambridge, under the direction of Daniel Hyde, and arranged by John Rutter, featuring the Britten Sinfonia. The story of Reginald Fessenden broadcasting “O Holy Night” was a theatrical production designed by our engineer, Jim Bilodeau. Jason Graves is renowned for his textural concept scores and innovative orchestration in cinematic narrative games such as Tomb Raider, The Order: 1886, Dead Space, and Lone Echo, for which he made his first appearance on The Annotator (Episode 13). One of Graves' most recent projects has been for VR video game, MOSS from Polyarc.In Moss, players guide a young mouse hero named Quill on an epic journey while also manipulating the field of play as their own character and key ally to Quill. Moss brings together classic components of a great game – characters, combat, and exploration – with the exciting, interactive opportunities of virtual reality. In this episode, Jason Graves shares about how both his and Polyarc's greatest desire was for the player to make a true emotional connection with the game, including through Jason's original music. Jason's diverse musical background as a composer, drummer, keyboardist, guitarist and world percussionist allow him to expertly compose in many different genres of music. As a result, his game credits alone include more than one hundred titles, ranging from electronic and rock to full symphonic scores. He performs world percussion, drums and guitar on many of his own tracks and has conducted and recorded his live orchestral scores at Abbey Road Studios, Air Studios London, Capitol Records, FOX, Paramount Pictures and Skywalker Sound. One of JASON GRAVES' most recent project has been for the VR video game, LONE ECHO.Lone Echo is a virtual reality adventure game developed by Ready At Dawn, and published by Oculus Studios. Set aboard a space station orbiting Saturn, it allows players to move in zero-gravity by grabbing and pushing off of the environment. In addition to the narrative single-player game, the title includes a team-based multiplayer sports mode called Echo Arena, which was also released as a stand-alone game.The original music for Lone Echo and Echo Arena combines ambient, analog synth soundscapes with gritty drums and features the ethereal vocals of Malukah. Lone Echo and Echo Arena were released on July 20, 2017.In this episode, JASON GRAVES talks through a LONE ECHO suite that he wrote and includes how he incorporated the heavenly vocals of Malukah in subtle and surprising ways throughout the piece. We recently chatted with Composer Sascha Dikiciyan also known as Sonic Mayhem about his incredible career in video game music composition for such titles as Quake II, God of War II, Borderlands, Mass Effect 3 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Sacha also recently released an original album titled, Doomsday featuring songs such as “Genesis”, “Futureland” (which features Power Glove), “Bleed Forever” (featuring Malukah), and more. There’s also an appearance by electronic rock artist Blue Stahli on the album. Sascha's work came to prominence when he sent a copy of his first CD "Methods of Destruction", an alternate Quake soundtrack, to id Software in 1996. As a result, they asked him personally to score the soundtrack for Quake II.
