LaNua Medical, an Irish medtech device startup, today announced it has raised $6.3 million in seed funding. The company is developing a groundbreaking technology that makes it easy, safe, and cheaper for doctors to treat internal bleeding, vascular malformations and many benign and malignant tumours. The funding round was co-led by Elkstone and Atlantic Bridge, with participation from Enterprise Ireland and Furthr VC. The funding will be used to accelerate product development and market access. A spin-out from University College Dublin (UCD), La Nua was founded in 2024 by interventional radiologist Dr Cormac Farrelly, Tom Fitzmaurice (ex-Medtronic VP) and UCD biomedical engineers Dr Eoin O'Cearbhaill and Dr Sajjad Amiri. The new Ecore device aims to help improve patient outcomes, lower hospital costs, minimize duration of hospital stays, and reduce stress and procedure times for practitioners. LaNua's pioneering Ecore device will help to modernise embolisation procedures - a technique used by surgeons and radiologists to control the flow of blood in certain areas of the body. Designed to enhance the safe and targeted delivery of tools used to block blood flow, the umbrella-shaped device will enter blood vessels deep within the body and form an occlusive barrier. In a major step for embolisation procedures, the Ecore device allows doctors to restrict blood flow in a targeted segment of veins or arteries while still allowing ancillary medical tools (guidewires and catheters) to pass through it. The innovative device design will safely complement liquid and microparticle embolization including localised intravascular radiation procedures performed by Interventional Radiologists worldwide. Exposure to X-ray radiation is also reduced for both patient and practitioner, and lowers the risk of human errors like inadvertently blocking blood flow to healthy adjacent organs. Speaking on the announcement CEO and Co-founder of LaNua Medical Tom Fitzmaurice said "We are delighted to complete this $6.3M seed round bringing on board sophisticated and experienced Medical Technology investors in Ireland and the United States. It will enable our team to hire additional skilled resources, develop a range of devices to meet the growing demands of embolisation in the Interventional Radiology medical community and gain entry into our first market in the United States." Currently, the global embolisation market is worth $2.2bn and is expected to reach $3.88bn in 2031, driven by increased incidences of vascular diseases, cancer and growing demand for minimally invasive surgeries. Consultant Interventional Radiologist, CMO and Co-founder Dr Cormac Farrelly said "Having performed thousands of embolisation procedures, I strongly believe this next-generation embolisation device is a transformative platform technology. It will not just make existing procedures safer and more effective, but will also enable new clinical applications for minimally invasive embolisation procedures worldwide." The device can be used in oncology, and in the treatment of benign tumours, malformations and haemorrhage. LaNua is initially targeting treatments used to enable liver cancer patients to safely receive potentially curative surgery. For example, a combination of embolisation and surgery has increased 5-year survival rates by 45% for colorectal cancer, which spreads to the liver in 60% of patients. By improving the efficacy and safety of targeted therapeutic delivery in embolisation, LaNua's Ecore device can potentially push survival rates above 80%. "LaNua Medical exemplifies Ireland's continued excellence and innovation in the MedTech sector," said Niall McEvoy, Head of Venture at Elkstone. "As an early investor in pioneering companies like LetsGetChecked, Luminate Medical and Croi Valve, we at Elkstone have seen firsthand how Irish Health Tech and MedTech start-ups can revolutionise patient care on a global scale. LaNua, led by an experienced founder team, has the po...
So you want validated, at-home, self-collected swabs for STI testing… Here's what you need to know! Sexually transmitted infection rates continue to climb across the US and while testing for these diseases is widely available, for the most part it requires the patient to go to a local clinic to collect and submit their sample for testing. But, is that really necessary, especially from a test accuracy perspective? Today's guests answer that exact question. And I'm sure that many, if not all of us would agree that the ability for patients to collect samples outside of a clinical setting has numerous benefits, including what the authors refer to as pseudo-anonymity, increased comfort and ultimately increased access to testing, which would be of particular value for patients that may avoid clinical settings due to various different socioeconomic barriers. Numra, an AI-powered financial automation platform, today announced it has raised €1.5 million to help finance teams drive productivity and profitability. The round was led by Elkstone (Manna, Flipdish, LetsGetChecked). Numra - formerly Autonifai - provides finance and accounting teams with the tech infrastructure needed to scale. Powered by AI, the integrated and intuitive solution streamlines complex financial workflows to save time and eliminate errors to reduce costs. By offloading time-consuming tasks such as data entry, reconciliations, and error investigations, Numra's technology increases team capacity to better support clients and business development. Chartered accountancy firm providing services for Irish and international markets, BDO, are participating in the Pilot. Founded in 2023, by David Kearney (co-founder of Peblo acquired by Wayflyer) and Conor Digan (ex-Wonder, GerYourGuide] Numra today also announced the launch of its new AI-powered accounts assistant. Managed through the Numra platform, the AI Assistant improves the teams productivity by 30-50% by allowing it to manage collections, 3-way matching, payments, process invoices, and perform reconciliations and detailed cost allocations. Users can also interact with the tool over email, Microsoft Teams, Slack and other chat software to further streamline operations. "AI will have a transformative impact on the role of accountants and finance departments everywhere. The advent of LLMs means that what was once unimaginable is now possible. At Numra, our AI's capability to ingest and process vast amounts of unstructured data enables us to redefine the boundaries of productivity and transform how finance departments operate," said David Kearney, Co-Founder and CEO of Numra. Inefficiencies continue to plague the finance profession at a time when productivity and morale are more important than ever. A recent report by Gartner shows that 73% of accountants have seen their workloads surge over the past three years. Additionally, 69% of CFOs are struggling to recruit for vacant positions, while nearly one-third of finance leaders citing staff turnover and dwindling morale as major obstacles to growth. By bringing intelligent automations to finance, Numra aims to empower CFOs and their teams to modernise processes and access growth. "Numra is the perfect example of how Irish innovators are leveraging artificial intelligence to address the current and future challenges in sectors such as finance. At Elkstone, we are proud to be a part of Numra's journey from such an early stage, and to support them with the launch of their AI power accounts assistant," said Niall McEvoy, Venture Partner at Elkstone. Numra will use the additional funding to hire across product and engineering, drive further product development, and expand to the U.S. market. See more stories here.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: You have “this friend”… and perhaps this is someone you've known forever, maybe you saw each other through some tough times, but at this particular place in your life, this friendship has been feeling strained, frustrating, and sometimes downright toxic. But you guilt yourself saying, “Well, we've been friends since college” or “Am I a dick if I don't want to be there for her anymore?” If that sounds at all familiar, you are in the same boat that many people find themselves in when they reach their 30s and 40s and beyond. You've grown as a person, your life has changed, and your priorities have shifted. But, you still feel tethered to this historical relationship that feels more like it's robbing you dry than adding to your fulfillment. A listener of the show wrote to the pod asking how to actually let go of one of these friendships. I mean, how do you go about breaking up with a friend? Is there an approach? How do you know if you're being a big ‘ol meanie? If you've been pulled to part ways with a friendship, but have no idea what-the-hell that really looks like, you may want to have a listen. I discuss six major concepts to keep in mind (you know, to keep your shit straight) and two specific methods you can take to pull the trigger on the “break up”. Additionally, I walk you through how to deal if someone breaks up with you (or simply just ghosts you). This pod explores: How to tap into the “real” reason you're looking to end the friendship How to get connected to the way you need to conduct yourself so you're proud of your own behavior (even if the other person loses their shit) Two specific methods to “break up” with this unfulfilling friendship Four steps to aid in your healing if someone has broken up with you or isn't communicating with you any longer PERKS FOR THE POD-IENCE This podcast is sponsored by LetsGetChecked and The Bold-Faced Truth Podcast listeners get a whoppin' 30% off their first test kit of choice at trylgc.com/boldtruth or simply enter code boldtruth at checkout. Every single year, over 1 million women question leaving their marriage. And nearly 70 percent of all divorces are initiated by women. And it's no wonder – Marriage makes men's lives exponentially easier while it makes women's lives drastically harder. It is clear that ‘traditional' marriage dynamics are no longer tenable for American women. Years ago, I remember having a chat with a friend where she was lamenting that she should be grateful her husband wasn't cavorting around, cheating on her, abusing substances, or screaming obscenities at her. I clearly remember her saying, “Wow, the bar is set pretty damn low.” Seriously. Not being abused should be a given, not something to be celebrated. In my near two decades of coaching, I have found myriad women frustrated, overwhelmed, and downright furious about the inequity in their marriage. Whilst doing all the domestic labor, holding down impressive careers, and digging deep into therapy and personal development, these women often find themselves lonely, heartbroken, and baffled at the lack of ownership and responsibility their partners were exhibiting in the relationship. No wonder recent studies cite single women without children being the happiest in our society. In this week's episode, I chat with my close pal and colleague, Kate Anthony, who has just penned a book entitled, “The ‘D' Word: Making the Ultimate Decision about Your Marriage”. Kate talks with me about her own divorce journey, shares about debunked studies citing divorce negatively affects children, understanding narcissism, and the courageous choice not to settle for subpar relationships. Have a listen and gain more insight on if you should stay or if you should go. This pod explores: Understanding various forms of abuse and the unexpected way financial abuse shows up The faulty and unfounded research that propagated the notion that you should “stay together for the kids” and what new research has found Why trying to “just communicate more effectively” isn't working for you and what to focus on instead The curious place we are in history where the gender dynamics of marriage are changing dramatically PERKS FOR THE POD-IENCE This podcast is sponsored by LetsGetChecked and The Bold-Faced Truth Podcast listeners get a whoppin' 30% off their first test kit of choice at trylgc.com/boldtruth or simply enter code boldtruth at checkout. Irish-based sales performance, efficiency and planning start-up Lative has raised $3 million in seed funding led by Elkstone Ventures to automate the B2B sales planning and execution process in real-time. Lative has developed powerful and easy-to-use cloud-based sales performance, efficiency and planning software that helps B2B revenue teams monitor and improve sales performance. It allows users to understand their sales performance, cost efficiency and return on investment (ROI) with real-time risk and opportunity assessment, as well as easily simulate future capacity and investment plans with far higher accuracy than how it's currently done within organisations today. The software connects top-down revenue plans and targets to bottoms-up performance and costs, empowering companies to boost sales productivity, maximise every dollar spent, and plan with precision and purpose. Lative recognises the need for combining planning with execution within sales organisations and has built the platform to solve this need. Historically, this has been a top-down approach which Lative acknowledges is an inaccurate and inefficient method and leads to expensive mistakes. Instead, the company takes the customers' actual bottom-up data in real-time in order to build accurate capacity plans and see the impact of strategic initiatives on sales productivity and return on investment. This is not a once-off solution, but can be used consistently to monitor sales performance and efficiency as the company grows and changes. Currently, there are a growing number of companies on the platform including EnterpriseDB, Oneflow and Saleshood. Lative will continue to improve and deepen their integrations with strategic technology partners Salesforce and Snowflake, as well as continue to expand their broader integration partner ecosystem with a range of CRMs, ERPs, Finance and HR systems. With the funding, Lative intends to invest in its go-to-market strategy and further development of the platform. This funding will also enable Lative to build an integral insights and benchmarking module which will improve decision-making by sales teams. Lative was co-founded in 2022 by former colleagues Werner Schmidt (led revenue operations and sales enablement for high-growth SaaS businesses like Sage and Citrix), and Laura Tortosa Sancho (led multiple sales operations functions at Sage and was a senior consultant at Deloitte). Both founders have extensive revenue operations backgrounds and consistently struggled firsthand with the issues that Lative now solves. Werner Schmidt, CEO & co-founder of Lative said, "As economic conditions have changed in recent years, for B2B sales teams sales productivity and efficiency has gone from an afterthought to a critical success factor. Lative connects revenue plans to performance and costs in real-time so that you can focus on making the right decisions or course correct at the right times to achieve your revenue and profitability goals." Elkstone Ventures (Flipdish, LetsGetChecked, Manna) led the funding round, with participation from Enterprise Ireland, new investor Handshake Ventures (Beautiful.ai, 1Qbit, SteamElements), and existing investors WestWave Capital, Future Five and various Scouts and Angels from Sequoia, EQT, Sage, GoTo, Contentful and others were also involved in the funding round, including Kasper Hulthin (founder of Peakon, Podio and Kost) and Vernon Bubb (Stage2 Capital, Managing Director EMEA at Clari) who are both on the board of Lative, and Warren Weiss (founder, GP at WestWave Capital). Niall McEvoy, Partner at Elkstone Ventures said, "Lative is making sales teams more efficient, by replacing spreadsheets with software that can drastically improve sales results. The platform is potentially category-defining for sales team management. Werner and Laura are real domain experts with decades of relevant sector experience. Customers speak highly of the transformational impact of the solution " Jenny Melia, Execut...
At the start of every year, it's likely you get pumped up and excited to make some serious change. You decide on a handful of things that you are GOING to conquer this year, god-damn-it! But what actually makes those goals a reality? Throughout my 15+ years in this work, I have found that noble intentions have very little to do with bringing goals to fruition. Good ol' fashioned gumption and desire are not enough to make your dreams come true. [sad trombone] In fact, a recent Inc.com article indicated that only 8% of people actually accomplish their goals. WHOA!! 8%!? Well, fuck. But, wait. Never fear, Babycakes, because this episode targets seven ways people tend to sabotage their own goals (without even realizing it) and how you can set yourself up to slaaaaay all your goals. It's not rocket science, but if you employ some of these easy tactics, you will kill all your 2024 goals! Yes, please! This pod explores: My favorite tool to use to ensure you are tackling this goal for YOU (instead of mom/fam/boss/society) The number one way people lose steam while working towards a goal and how you can smoothly move beyond this obstacle like a BOSS Why you need accountability and people in your life to support you and what to do if you don't How to keep your self-talk on point so you are constantly encouraged, kicking ass, and taking names PERKS FOR THE POD-IENCE This podcast is sponsored by LetsGetChecked and The Bold-Faced Truth Podcast listeners get a whoppin' 30% off their first test kit of choice at trylgc.com/boldtruth or simply enter code boldtruth at checkout. Irish-based data science and AI startup Zerve has raised $3.8 million in its pre-seed funding to build a new architecture for Data Science & AI development. The company has created a coding platform tailored for data science and AI development that allows teams to collaborate and share their outputs more easily. Zerve's cloud-based, serverless technology utilizes a novel, stateful architecture to create a scalable, collaborative development environment. The tool helps break down the silos that can exist between data scientists and developers. Zerve was co-founded in 2021, by college friends Phily Hayes (ex-LearnUpon and Deloitte) and Jason Hillary, PhD, Engineering, and later joined by Greg Michaelson, former Chief Customer Officer of DataRobot. The company is currently one of ten startups chosen from Europe to participate in Intel's Ignite Accelerator program for deep-tech companies. Since 2019, the 148 companies that have gone through the programme have raised over 1.6bn. Phily Hayes, CEO & co-founder of Zerve said, "Data scientists have never really been able to seamlessly share both their code and their results with their colleagues. The existing tools available are fragmented. It makes it hard to be productive. With Zerve, all the teams can collaborate live and build something stable enough to deploy. In much the same way as Figma made design collaborative, Zerve is poised to bring this innovation in the data science coding space." Greg Michaelson, co-founder of Zerve said, "Zerve brings about an architectural paradigm shift. We're dedicated to building Zerve to not only enhance the capabilities of data science but also to empower data scientists to deliver effortlessly in the era of AI." Elkstone Ventures (Flipdish, LetsGetChecked, Manna) led the funding round, with contributions from prominent angel investors, such as Sean Mullaney, CTO of Algolia, and Rob Hickey, former EVP of Engineering at DataRobot. Niall McEvoy, Partner at Elkstone Ventures said, "Zerve has an ambitious vision of bridging the gap between data science and AI development. The team has built a technology that will really allow companies to break down silos and harness the power of AI and data science and has the potential to do to data science what Figma did for design". Zerve currently has 12 employees and aims to hire across Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, and Research and Development. See more stories here. You get super jelly that your partner gets to have extra time off work, so you say (in a snarky-ass tone), “Wow. Must be nice to have so much free time”. Or maybe a work group you're a part of is trying to decide how to handle a specific project and instead of voicing your true thoughts you say, “We can certainly do it your way” and mutter under you breath, “And good fucking luck with that.” What we have here, folks, are two examples of the Passive-Aggressive Communication Style. Everyone's fav. But, even though we find it infuriating, many of us do it ourselves aaaaaall the time. If you weren't properly taught how to advocate for your own wants, needs, and opinions [spoiler: none of us were], it's likely that you find yourself falling into one of the less-than-effective communication styles. Research has shown that there are four main communication styles: passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive (#guilty), and assertive. Fifty points if you can figure out which one is most effective. Yup, Assertive. But, if you're like most, you probably dip your toes in a bit of the other three. And, you certainly are not alone. In this episode, part two of two, I take a deep dive into the Passive-Aggressive and Assertive communication styles. I cover off what they typically sound like, what their go-to tactics are, what to do if you communicate this way, and what to do if you're engaging with someone who employs the Passive-Aggressive style. Be sure to have a pen and paper handy as I spell out specific verbiage and phrases you can use… like, yesterday. She's also one of my closest friends, and we go deep on hormones (for women and men) in today's podcast. This one is worth saving for a couple of relistens as there are knowledge bombs left, right, and center in today's episode. Brought to you in partnership with Lets Get Checked. That said, the general public has accepted as healthy certain foods that actually have negative effects on your body. Oats are a great source of carbohydrates, reduce anxiety, and promote sleep; but at the same time oats are proinflammatory because they contain what are known as phytates. Then there is soy, which contains phytoestrogens that may adversely affect hormones. Unless your soy is organic, non-GMO, and fermented, Orla advises keeping it out of your diet. · Before looking at how to boost your sex drive, the first thing to ask yourself is why your sex drive is low in the first place. For women, predominantly, there is an issue with their estrogen and testosterone—their estrogen levels may not be rising optimally, and their testosterone isn't being activated. Women on the pill will automatically have a lower sex drive. For men, especially those over 45, low sex drive is usually due to low testosterone levels. Men under 45 with low sex drive, on the other hand, may be experiencing psychological issues. · Stress is not only one of the biggest culprits when it comes to fertility issues, but it makes the sex act itself robotic. “My first thing is to get women to stop trying,” says Orla. In addition, beware “The Two-Week Wait” following ovulation when a woman waits to see whether they are pregnant. Those two weeks may turn into two months or two years, which only serves to compound their stress levels.

When Suzanne Falter's daughter suffered an unexpected and unexplainable cardiac arrest at the fragile age of twenty-two, she had no idea that her daughter's death would open up a completely different world to her. She never thought that ten years later she would write a book on the many lessons her daughter, Teal, would teach her from the afterlife. At the time of her daughter's passing, Suzanne was in the throes of hustle culture – doing, doing, doing, so much so that she couldn't be bothered to look up from her work to enjoy a sunset. I wanted to bring Suzanne on the show to talk about the precious experiences she has had communicating with Teal from beyond the grave and how that informs the work she does in the world. In this tender and intimate discussion, I share some of my own experiences of communicating with my father who has passed and how meaning and guidance is often all around us… we only need to get out of our way to see them. We talk about what it means to truly surrender, what to do if you feel like you suck at meditation, and how to let go of all the stress, overwhelm, and worry that clouds you from operating at high vibration. In Suzanne's memoir, entitled Free Spirited, she writes, “First she would have to die, then I would as well so we'd both be reborn in completely different ways.” If you like the idea of connecting with the afterlife or your spirit guides but have no idea where to start, you won't want to miss this one. This pod explores: The messages Suzanne received from her daughter during the 6 days she was in a coma What it truly means to surrender and why so many of us don't do it How Suzanne has learned to channel and communicate with her daughter and her spirit guides (even though she resisted it for so long) The absolute first place you need to start to cultivate a strong spiritual self and connect with your loved ones who have passed on _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! This week we're chatting about an emerging area of genetics, pharmacogenomics! Pharmacogenomics (PGx), one of the core elements of personalized medicine, is a field of research that studies how a person's genes affect how they respond to medications. Its long-term goal is to help doctors select the drugs and doses best suited for each person. Joining us for this conversation is Avni Santani PhD, FACMG, Chief Medical Officer of Veritas Genetics, a LetsGetChecked company, which delivers tailored at-home healthcare solutions to 300+ organizations. Dr. Santani holds a Master's degree in Medical Molecular Genetics from the University of Aberdeen and a PhD in Genetics from Texas A&M University. She holds specialty board certifications in Clinical Molecular Genetics and Clinical Cytogenetics from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).On This Episode We Discuss:Pharmacogenomics and other similar termsThe state of genetic testing today and how it has changed in the last ten yearsWhy it is helpful to have pharmacogenomic testing information when figuring out the best drugs to prescribeSteps of drug metabolism that gene variants can affectHow gene variants can impact the drug response (drug reception, uptake, and breakdown)If testing can provide information on the dosage of drugs to prescribe and how this varies between peopleTypes of conditions/diseases where genetic testing results can be applied (behavioral health, cardiovascular health, and pain management) The role of testing in determining personal risk levels of becoming addicted to pain medicationsGenes that LetsGetChecked's myPGx test analyzesThe frequency at which gene variants found through this testing help narrow down which drug or dose to prescribeIf you want to learn more about pharmacogenomics, head over to the LetsGetChecked website. But did you know there is one that can also screen for recessive disorders (like cystic fibrosis) and fetal antigens? BillionToOne offers UNITY Screen, which does all this from one blood draw from a pregnant person. Visit unityscreen.com for more info. Listen to DNA Today Episode #224 Single Gene NIPT and #225 Fetal Antigen NIPT. (Sponsored)Juno Diagnostics has developed the next generation of non-invasive prenatal tests so that all pregnant people can access a higher standard of care. Juno Diagnostics is the only genetic testing company on the market that performs NIPS for common aneuploidies on blood samples from a finger stick instead of a traditional venous blood draw. That means you collect your sample on your own time, at home, and still have NIPS at a CLIA laboratory! Juno's Hazel™ NIPS screens for common chromosome variations seen in pregnancy, such as Down syndrome or trisomy 21, trisomy 13, and trisomy 18 – in addition to testing for fetal sex. You can order this test yourself, or have your healthcare provider order for you. Head to JunoDx.com and use the code "DNATODAY” for 10% off! After a secret, six-year love affair with prescription drugs and alcohol, Laura Cathcart Robbins begrudgingly checked herself in rehab. She knew that if she had any hope of a future and any hope of parenting her precious children, she needed to get some help. And, fast. And the timing couldn't have been worse. She was in the beginning stages of what could potentially be a horribly contentious divorce and had just signed on to a prestigious community position. In the space of a short ten months, Laura had ended a very high-profile marriage, went to rehab, got sober and fell in love. This week on the show, I chat with Laura about the chronology of her addiction, including a brief stint with freebasing cocaine, hiding pills and booze in a vault of shoe boxes, and terror she felt when she realized that her maternal instinct to caretake for her children, THE driving force in her life, was now superseded by the drive to get high. The strongest pull she had ever known was now dethroned by the urge to use. In this candid and unabashed interview, Laura shares her elitism around her addiction and how that kept her from getting the help she needed, her defense tactic of stonewalling others, and how she healed herself from taking ten Ambien daily… washed down with a few shots of Vodka. We discuss how her perspective on intimacy and vulnerability has changed in her relationships now that she's in recovery, the role race and privilege played in her addiction, and the first step you should take if you are concerned about your substance use. This pod explores: Understanding the difference between privacy and secrecy and how addiction thrives in secrecy How Laura defines addiction and how it shows up in our work, fitness, and relationships How Laura opened up to vulnerability and what her first step was (spoiler: you can do it to) Exploring the lack of Black and Brown voices the recovery space and how Laura is shifting that paradigm _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! So you've been stressed the-f-out, constantly overwhelmed and anxious and you've been noticing that this constant state of hustle, hustle, hustle, is starting to feel like your new normal. Only it's not normal. You're wondering if this is what burnout feels like. And your entire nervous system is screaming at you to slooooooow down. In fact, sometimes when you have down time you're in such a heightened state, that you have a hellova time calming down… reaching for something to “do” while you relax. But, what is actually happening in your nervous system? Many times, when we get into these states of stress, we blame either ourselves, for taking on too much or not being able to handle enough, or we blame external forces. We think that it's our boss's fault or our partner's fault, and whilst there may be some culpable parties, blame really doesn't ever help you feel better. And being pissed that you're anxious hasn't really helped either. But, if you really understood what was happening in your nervous system, you could utilize tools to self-regulate or co-regulate. Ok, great. But wtf does this really look like? Furthering our series on women's health, I dialed up my pal Victoria Albina who is a Nurse Practitioner, Life Coach, and authority on all things nervous system. We chat all about her take on Polyvagal Theory (wait, what's that?), the three main states of our autonomic nervous system, and how we can work with that system to calm-the-fuck down already. We also discuss how all of this relates to codependency in our lives. Yep, all connected. If you've found yourself in a near constant state of stress and overwhelm, this episode will take you to school. This pod explores: Understanding Polyvagal Theory and how it impacts your daily life Evaluating what it looks like to be in a “dysregulated state” and how to self-regulate or co-regulate The Ventral Vagal state of our parasympathetic nervous system and how accessing this state allows us to be present, creative and connected Victoria's 3C's of Feminist Wellness and how you can get your hands on her free meditations _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! At the start of every year, it's likely you get pumped up and excited to make some serious change. You decide on a handful of things that you are GOING to conquer this year, god-damn-it! But what actually makes those goals a reality? Throughout my 12+ years in this work, I have found that noble intentions have very little to do with bringing goals to fruition. Good ol' fashioned gumption and desire are not enough to make your dreams come true. [sad trombone] In fact, a recent Inc.com article indicated that only 8% of people actually accomplish their goals. Never fear, Babycakes, because this episode targets seven ways people tend to sabotage their own goals (without even realizing it) and how you can set yourself up to slaaaaay all your goals. As we grow through our teen years into adulthood, it's not uncommon to find a wealth of information about puberty, pregnancy, and infertility. Those transitions and obstacles are readily talked about and addressed. But, our shifts in hormones are clearly not done after our thirties and sadly, our society has done women a massive disservice in not properly setting us up with education and tools to navigate perimenopause and menopause… or even how to know if they're happening for you or not. Add on the extreme stress of juggling careers, parenthood, ailing parents, and relationship struggles and many women find themselves in front of their doctors asking what the hell is happening to them. And sadly, the common western medical sentiment is to simply ride it out, lesson your stress (gag!), or start hormone therapy. There's got to be a better way! [infomercial voice] Fortunately, there is. This week on the show, I dial up Dana La Voie, a Tonic Herbalist & Acupuncturist who has spent her career helping women balance their hormones naturally. She has over 20 years of experience specializing in women's health and an over 90% success rate of getting women menopause relief. I mean… Yes, please! Have a listen to this convo where I ask Dana all the things about what it actually means to support one's hormones through menopause, how to understand the evolutionary reason for this transition, and how this can actually be one of the best times of your life. (I know. It blew me away too.) This pod explores: Understanding the “three best friends” of hormones and how to makes sure they *stay* friends (instead of enemies) How the midlife change in hormones supports your most creative, expansive, and wise chapter of life How to lessen the negative effects of menopause and supply your body with what it needs Dana's secret key to healthy aging (don't miss this!) ____ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! And, also am I fucking invisible? Navigating midlife isn't really something we're set up for… I mean, think about it. This week on the show, I dial up Jennifer Arthurton, the founder and creator of Old Chicks Know Shit, a community and a podcast designed to inspire and support midlife women in chasing their dreams and creating their kick ass next chapter. Ever feel like you just can't quite enjoy the holidays because you're in the middle of an emotional shitstorm that seems to make the season trying, stressful, and overwhelming? Maybe it's your first holiday after being newly divorced. Or maybe it's the fifth Christmas without your beloved mother, and you can't seem to understand why it's still so damn hard for you. Or perhaps you just moved your family across the country and although it was an amazing decision for you, you still find yourself incredibly nostalgic, overly emotional, and sensitive. If any of that sounds familiar, it's likely that there is something in your world that needs a little processing. (And, no, there's nothing wrong with you.) Perhaps what's tugging at you is the need for full-on grieving the loss of a loved one, which feels exacerbated by the sentimental tone of the holiday. Or perhaps it's as simple as “a case of the blues” because you've changed jobs and aren't able to do the gift exchange with your previous company you were with for ages. Whatever you may be going through in your life, if you've created any changes in patterns, it's likely there may be a bit (or a shit ton) of emotion to work through… especially during this time of year. Even if you don't think grief is called for, have a listen through this episode where I share six things you can do to work through all the “feels” you're having during this temperamental time. And, P.S. Dealing with your feels doesn't mean you're weak, too dramatic, or too sensitive. It just means you're fucking human. And brave. This pod explores: The real reason why you might be drinking too much, eating too much, or spending too much during the season The best way to set yourself up for success if you KNOW the holidays will make your current life circumstances extra tough How to let go of the past in a powerful way and create a new, empowered meaning behind the season Who you should (and should not) be turning to for support ____ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! Let's say you want to go for a promotion at your work, but your inner voice keeps telling you that you're an imposter. Who are you to go for this job? Or maybe you are thinking of starting your own business, but you know you're lacking some serious confidence. Don't you have to be super confident right off the bat to do something like that? Or maybe you tried going back to school but you failed your first test so you threw in the towel and haven't been back since. When we talk about personal development topics like confidence, imposter complex, or navigating failure, we often think there is one specific trick or tool that will magically imbue us with all the confidence we desire, get rid of all our self-doubt, or make us immune to hardship. You know… just shittin' glitter over here. Sadly, that isn't the case. This week on the show I chat with my pal, Jane Atkinson, who shares a 5-part Thought Work Model which can help you bust through self-doubt, conjure some serious confidence, and contend with failure like a badass. If you have a hard time getting into an empowering mindset or tend to go down negative rabbit holes on tv or social media, you will definitely want to pull up an ear for this one. This pod explores: Jane's two-prong approach to conjuring confidence… and how you've already proven to yourself that you can be courageous Jane's 24-hour “wallow rule” and how it can help you process your feelings around failure The 5-step Thought Work Model Jane uses to keep her mindset in the right place Understanding imposter complex and what to do about it _____ WANNA HANG WITH ME IN MEXICO? You've been in the same industry for 20 years and you're dying to make a change but you're scared shitless to throw in the towel. Wouldn't that mean you wasted two decades? You're not totally sure you're getting your Master's because it's what YOU really want or if it's because that's what dad wants… or because it's what a younger version of you wanted. Shit. What if you just don't want that path any longer? Finish what you started? That's what they say, right? And so many people would kill to be in your position. But, then again, Italy is calling… If you've faced any of these harrowing decisions (or something similar) you know what it can feel like to toe the line of QUIT or PERSEVERE. I mean… how do you know if you should stick with something or if you should just quit while you're (sort of) ahead? In this episode, I cover off five (plus a bonus), specific tactics you can employ to make your decision faaaar easier. Today on the podcast, Paul talks with John Abramson, American physician, lecturer at Harvard, and author of the books, Overdosed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine and Sickening: How Big Pharma Broke American Health Care and How We Can Repair It. They have the important conversation about the problems with profit-driven pharmaceutical companies, conflicts of interest in the medical world, and how changing medical education and the system at large is integral for a patient-focused path forward. A note from Paul: Throughout my training and practice as a physician I have come to one very disappointing conclusion: Western medicine isn't helping people lead better lives. Now that I've realized this, I've become obsessed with understanding what makes us healthy or ill. I want to live the best life I can and I want to be able to share this knowledge with others so that they can do the same. Tell me if this sounds familiar: You get a Bachelor's degree, but it doesn't really feel like enough, so you apply for a Master's program. You attain the Master's but turns out, it doesn't feel like enough either, so you start your own business. You set the goal to make six figures in your business, but when you achieve that marker, it somehow still doesn't feel like enough. Maybe the key to happiness is to attain seven figures in your biz? Or maybe the goal should be to get married… or have a baby… or lose fifty pounds. So, you set up more lofty goals. Because, if you aren't on a path toward attaining a big goal, what is your life even about? But, also, why haven't any of these goals created happiness? Like, when-the-fuck is happiness going to show up? Does that scenario sound like the strategy of achievement you've employed in your own life? Through societal influences, systems of oppression, and families of origin, we learn very early on that there are those who achieve (aka the GOOD folks) and there are those who don't (aka the BAD folks… the lazy losers). And, in a culture that glorifies hustle, wears burnout like a badge of honor, and focuses on capitalism and productivity, it's no wonder that so many of us collapse our entire sense of self-worth with what we accomplish. What we lose sight of while we strive, and strive, and strive, is… what actually brings us happiness and fulfillment. This week on the show, I dial up Tara McMullin, a writer, podcaster, and producer, who has spent the last 13 years studying what makes small business owners tick. She has recently written her first book entitled, What Works: A Comprehensive Framework To Change The Way We Approach Goal Setting. In this chat, Tara and I discuss the myriad of influences telling us what we're “supposed to want” and what we “should” strive for and how to discern what is truly a desire of your heart. And, don't worry, you don't have to throw all your goals aways… Tara simply invites you to think critically about why you want to attain them to begin with. This pod explore How capitalism has a vested interest in keeping us unfulfilled The origin of modern-day goal setting and how it can often steal your joy The intersection between the self help community and goal setting and how it can sometimes cause you to move farther away from yourself How to use critical thinking to ensure your goals have your “informed consent” ____ LAST CALL TO APPLY FOR WORTHY.! We've all heard of our inner child, right? That wounded inner child who is still reckoning with incidents occurring in our childhood. But, have you ever heard of your “outer child”? Tell me if this sounds familiar: You are going back home to visit your family and the minute you get around your parents, it's like you're 16 all over again. You're angsty, everything is unfair, and you just want to burn incense and listen to music, yet hanging out with your fam makes you want to lash out and yell and scream and maybe break a lava lamp. And suddenly all of the coping mechanisms you've learned in decades of therapy are out the window. This, my friend, is your Outer Child. It's a way in which we regress to earlier versions of ourselves and act out from that place when surrounded by triggering people. And, let's face it, it's often our family. In this week's episode, I dial up Alexa Rae Schiefer, Trauma Coach and former mental health clinician, to ask her some heavy-hitting questions around the trauma we incur from our primary caregivers. We dig into the concept of “Parentification Trauma”, the inner and outer child, what trauma responses tend to look like, and what the hell a Window of Tolerance is and why we should be aware of it. Alexa Rae and I also discuss what it means to self-soothe and how that process can vary depending on what trauma you are up against. We chat about processing the trauma of our childhoods and how, more often than not, we are trying to pretend we don't have any trauma. Yeah, ok. How's that working out? We even talk about what-the-hell trauma even is. If you know you've got a wound, or two, or twenty, to process from your childhood, be sure to grab a pen and paper. This is a good one. This pod explores: The definition of trauma and how we all pretty much have it Understanding Parentification Trauma and how that influences your behavior later on in life What common trauma responses look like and what you can do about them Understanding Abandonment Wounds and how they show up in our lives _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! >>GET ON THE VIP LIST FOR WORTHY. I used to flippantly refer to myself as a Perfectionist and oftentimes I would elude to it being somewhat of a badge of honor. As I got older and my anxiety increased, I realized that being a chronic perfectionist was actually STEALING my joy instead of making my job easier. But, how does one just stop being a perfectionist? Perhaps you find yourself in the same boat; Vacillating between being SOLD on the idea that everything has to be just perfect and the conflicting desire to let things “go with the flow” or just be “good enough”. If you've found yourself in this dance, you are most certainly not alone. In this week's episode, I break down just how detrimental the strive for perfection can be and how it often leads to much suffering, frustration, and angst. Additionally, I dig into 5, easy-to-implement steps you can take to begin allowing room for your humanity without sacrificing excellence and how you can maintain your integrity AND your sanity. This pod explores: Why “Perfect” doesn't really exist and how the pursuit of perfection can be #supes detrimental How to figure out the personal “Rules” you've established for yourself that have locked you into perfectionism My favorite tool to catch and re-route your perfectionism in the moment (without overthinking it to death) How to allow room for excellence and integrity in what you do, without the “pressure of perfect” APPLICATIONS OPEN SEPTEMBER 8TH!
