Looking Back at the Houston Astros Cheating Scandal

The Houston Astros didn't make the World Series this year. But they're still widely considered one of the best teams of the past decade. FRONTLINE's documentary The Astros Edge: Triumph and Scandal in Major League Baseball examines how the team used cutting-edge techniques to rise from the bottom of the league to the top, and what happened in 2017 when they went too far in what would become one of the worst cheating scandals in MLB history. The Astros Edge correspondent Ben Reiter has covered the team extensively for Sports Illustrated and boldly predicted the Astros' stratospheric rise at a time when they were coming off a three-year slump. His book called Astroball unpacked some of the team's techniques, which were modeled on strategies from the business world. After The Athletic revealed that the team had used an illegal sign-stealing scheme, Reiter hosted a podcast series examining how the scandal unfolded. Reiter sat down with The FRONTLINE Dispatch to talk about the scandal and the limited accountability that followed. He told host and FRONTLINE editor-in-chief and executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath that he thinks the scandal has implications that go beyond baseball. “What does it mean when your business becomes so obsessed with efficiency and profit over everything else?” he said. “Like, yeah, there's a good chance you're going to have a lot of success, but there's a lot of problems that come with that.” You can watch The Astros Edge: Triumph and Scandal in Major League Baseball on FRONTLINE's website, FRONTLINE's YouTube channel, and the PBS App. Want to be notified every time a new podcast episode drops? This episode is talking about two of the world's biggest cheating scandals of modern times; the Houston Astros and the Australian cricket team. And while I knew a lot about one, the other was not as known to me, so here's Ben Reiter from Sports Illustrated and The Edge Podcast to chat about it. In this episode we talk about the many similarities of the two scandals, the reactions, the hatred for the teams, how so few people were punished, what happens when standard cheating crosses the imaginary line to moral outrage, how funny they both were and we compare Faf Du Plessis to the Boston Red Sox. - To support the podcast please go to our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32090121. In 2014, Ben Reiter, then a Sports Illustrated baseball writer, wrote a cover story predicting that the Houston Astros, one of Major League Baseball's worst teams, would win the World Series in three years. After the Astros fulfilled his prediction in 2017, Reiter detailed the team's rise in his book Astroball. When it was discovered that the Astros had operated an elaborate sign stealing system that many viewed as cheating, Reiter set out to uncover the truth of the scandal with a six-part podcast. With Bo and Farrell, Reiter discusses the nuances of cheating in baseball and golf and how the podcast gave him a second chance of getting the story right.

Ben Reiter, longtime Sports Illustrated columnist, author of the NY Times best seller Astroball, and host and producer of The Edge, a documentary podcast about the scandal that tarnished the Houston Astros.   Ben joined me on the show two years ago to discuss Astroball, which chronicled the Astros rise from cellar dweller to World Series champion in the 3 years after he predicted it would happen on the cover of Sports Illustrated. What happened after was a shock to his system. His podcast is his post-mortem on the team and on his work.   Our conversation discusses what happened, Ben’s assessment of the team and his book, and his conclusions. In the end, Ben found that the Astros’ story is about much more than baseball. It’s about power, money, culture, and accountability. About a modern world where everyone is seeking an edge, and about who ultimately benefits from that world. It sure sounds familiar to our world of investing.   If the conversation peaks your interest, I strongly recommend having a listen to his podcast, The Edge. Astroball is the definitive account of the Houston Astros' unexpected rise to win the 2017 World Series, by the writer who famously predicted it three years earlier on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Somewhat overshadowed by the subsequent scandal surrounding the Astros, the book is nevertheless an insightful and gripping read, and one which chronicles one of the most remarkable reversals of fortune in baseball history. Ben Reiter is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated and the author of Astroball:  The New Way to Win It All.  He joined SI in 2004 a few years out of college and has written for them ever since. In 2014 Ben wrote a cover story for SI entitled YOUR 2017 WORLD SERIES CHAMPS featuring the then sorry Astros who were the laughingstock of baseball at the time.  Three years later, his prediction came true. His book chronicling the journey has been dubbed Moneyball 2.0. Our conversation blew me away in how closely the parallels have been between baseball management and fundamental investing over the last 15 years.  From the incorporation of data to the challenges in managing people, I suspect if you just change the names of the players and the labels for the process, this could be a full blown conversation about investing. Baseball may even be ahead of the data revolution in investing, and the story of the Astros could hint at lessons that money managers will need to apply going forward.  Discuss the show and Read the transcript   Join Ted's mailing list at CapitalAllocatorsPodcast.com   Write a review on iTunes   Follow Ted on twitter at @tseides   For more episodes go to CapitalAllocatorsPodcast.com/Podcast

"ASTROBALL is really the result of several twists of fate. In 2014, in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, I wrote a cover story about what was then the worst team in baseball, one of the worst teams in baseball history, and we predicted on the cover that they would win the 2017 World Series. And then they actually did. I just had to write a book about the new techniques they used to get from the bottom to the top."
