Tonasket native and Spokane Falls southpaw Joe Thornton is back for a second season with the AppleSox in 2025. He chats with Joel Norman about last summer and they complete an Immaculate Grid together.
Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. Tyler thinks it's fair for fans to be rooting for losses at this point in the season so the Penguins work themselves into better draft position. How much do you want Tristan Jarry to play down the stretch? TK doesn't rule out the Penguins giving Jarry another chance next season, but he thinks the business standpoint should make it clear cut after the season. The guys told TK about Donny's trip to the game last night where he sat in the Poni seats (free food & booze). Tyler said Brent Burns was the cheapest guy he ever played with. TK brought up Joe Thornton and some of his funny stories on the road. TK told the guys about golfing at Pebble Beach. Tyler challenged the guys to golf later this year.
An update in the Aaron Rodgers saga as the Vikings said no the 4-time MVP. Now it comes down to the Steelers, the Giants or retirement with all 3 being real options. Do we think this move means the Steelers will be the ones to land Rodgers? Where does that put the Steelers' ceiling? Does it make them THAT much better? Should the San Jose Sharks have traded for David Jiricek? (1:23:35) Keegan and Sheng talk about it on this week's episode of the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! But before we talk Jiricek, we chat about the latest San Jose Sharks' news and their recent inspired play. What did we think of Joe Thornton's jersey retirement? (04:45) We talk about Sharks prospects who were invited to their World Junior selection camps like Sam Dickinson and Brandon Svoboda -- and about prospects who aren't going to World Juniors like Will Smith and Quentin Musty. (09:40) Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks have been playing some good hockey. (25:33) We discuss Rookie of the Month and NHL 1st Star of the Week Macklin Celebrini, and what Sheng was worried that Will Smith was going to lose (but didn't). Keegan runs a lap for Fabian Zetterlund around Timo Meier, and praises William Eklund. We credit GM Mike Grier for his veteran additions like Alex Wennberg, Jake Walman, and Timothy Liljegren. Obligatory Luke Kunin reference. (57:51) Keegan doesn't think that Grier will trade Mackenzie Blackwood. (1:19:05) Finally, let's talk David Jiricek! (1:23:35) Before Jiricek got traded to the Minnesota Wild, Sheng talked with a lot of his sources about Jiricek. What does the rest of the league think of Daemon Hunt and Jiricek? Does Jiricek project as a top-pairing or top-four blueliner? What's the San Jose Sharks' best equivalent to the Wild's 2025 first-rounder…William Eklund, Shakir Mukhamadullin, or Musty?…and would Sheng or Keegan have parted with any of these assets for Jiricek? (1:38:06) Which prospect would you rather have in your system, Jiricek or Yaroslav Askarov? Thanks for watching and subscribing to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast!

We got some big news in the NHL over the weekend as the St. Louis Blue fired Drew Bannister just 22 games into his Head Coaching career and promptly hired Jim Montgomery, who was let go from his job behind the Boston Bruins bench just five days earlier. That's where Jason and Frank began with today's edition of the show as they talked about why Blues GM Doug Armstrong made this move and the decision to give Montgomery a five-year contract. Can the Blues salvage this season? Is the future bright? The guys debated it.From there, they talked about the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins. The team seems lifeless and now the discussion is becoming what exactly should Kyle Dubas do this season? Frank believes they're in the mix on David Jiricek, but isn't quite sure what assets they'd be willing to give up.After a brief little bit of relationship advice from Gregor, they brought in Tyler for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked them about a couple of teams that are in interesting spots when it comes to the playoff picture. To wrap up the pod, Joe Thornton got to see his number #19 go to the rafters in San Jose over the weekend and the guys wanted to talk about Thornton's legacy both in the game and in the San Jose community.1:05 - Montgomery lands in St. Louis15:50 - Pittsburgh's struggles continue26:30 - Hurricanes goaltending30:00 - Buy or Sell40:55 - Jumbo Joe jersey retirement47:50 - Senators keep slippingWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Frank is back from the GM Meetings and has some notes on what was discussed as some of the most influential minds in hockey got together. The league and the players association are getting close to having to negotiate a new CBA and that means each side is starting to have internal discussions about what they could want. That's where the guys started today on the podcast and it led to some interesting debates about whether or not they could change the term limits for player contracts, how LTIR could change, and other things that could be changed in the next CBA.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys who their quarter way Jack Adams winner would be and how many career points Connor McDavid will finish with when all is said and done. After that, they talked a little bit more about McDavid's upcoming milestone as he closes in on 1000 career points. Frank talked about a few players in the 1000 point club who were maybe a little under appreciated. They wrapped up the show by talking about the next Hockey Hall of Fame class and who are the locks to get in. Celebrini shares his excitement about preparing for his first NHL game, the challenges that come with it, and what it's going to be like to live with Joe Thornton. Marco Sturm joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! Sturm was 19 when he started in the NHL with fellow teenager Patrick Marleau -- a situation that the San Jose Sharks will see this fall with youngsters Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith -- and he recounts that experience. The current Ontario Reign head coach also shared some stories about being interviewed for the Sharks' head coach job this summer. But before we get to Marco (1:13:24), we chat about the big Sharks news. On Sunday, the San Jose Sharks acquired Cody Ceci and a 2025 third-round pick from the Edmonton Oilers for Ty Emberson. Keegan was a lot colder on the trade than Sheng, Emberson being his big sticking point. (2:10) How did we grade the trade? (43:02) Are the San Jose Sharks also circling star goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov? Askarov requested a trade from the Nashville Predators earlier this week. (45:50) Sheng and Keegan bat around different trade proposals for Askarov, discuss their concerns about the mercurial netminder, and more. And now, Marco Sturm! (1:13:24) Sturm talks about what it was like to enter the NHL with fellow teenager Patrick Marleau in 1997. (1:14:00) Who did Sturm live with? (1:19:30) Sturm talks about how important it was to have solid veteran leadership around he and Marleau. (1:21:53) Sturm had a great Sharks career, but he was also part of the biggest trade in franchise history, the Joe Thornton trade. Sturm recalls what he was going through personally at the time, and why he was upset with GM Doug Wilson about it for years. (1:25:55) Sturm was part of two painful Sharks playoff losses, 2002 against the Colorado Avalanche and 2004 against the Calgary Flames. Jonathan Becher joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! The San Jose Sharks' president talks about the Macklin Celebrini effect and why it took the Sharks so long to embrace the rebuild. But before we get to Becher (1:09:57), Sheng and Keegan talk about Celebrini signing his ELC. Where does Celebrini fit into the San Jose Sharks' line-up? What are our too early predictions for how many points that Celebrini scores in his rookie campaign? Who wins the 2025 Calder Trophy? (1:50) Ty Emberson also signed…does Emberson take a top-four defenseman job on the Sharks by the end of the season? GM Mike Grier hasn't added any blueliners via free agency, is that a sign of his confidence in younger D like Emberson, Shakir Mukhamadullin, and Henry Thrun? (36:26) Finally, we turn our focus on the San Jose Barracuda: Why did Nathan Todd leave? How impressive were GM Joe Will's free agent signings? (51:29) And now, Becher! (1:09:57) Three years ago, the San Jose Sharks seemed unwilling to go into a rebuild. Behind the scenes, what's changed in recent seasons, that the Sharks now embrace a rebuild? (1:11:00) How has owner Hasso Plattner's attitude changed about rebuilding? (1:13:47) Two decisions about the same player seem to speak to that shift of attitude? In Mar. 2022, the Sharks re-signed Tomas Hertl for eight years. Two years later, the Sharks traded him. (1:15:14) Plattner was recently spotted at the Jul. 4 prospects scrimmage: How much more involved is Hasso with the Sharks now? (1:17:22) What's the Macklin Celebrini effect on the Sharks, from the Draft Party to jersey sales to prospects scrimmage attendance to more? (1:19:26) What's so valuable about having so many San Jose Sharks alumni back with the organization? (1:29:26) Sheng has one more Hertl question for Becher. (1:32:38) What's going on with the Sharks' SAP Center management agreement? Becher said the terms change unfavorably against the Sharks on Jul. 1, 2025. What does that mean for how long the Sharks will play at SAP Center? (1:33:57) Finally, there's an ongoing lawsuit against the Sharks, Sharks Ice, and former Jr. Sharks coach Kevin Whitmer for failing to follow proper procedures to protect Jr. Sharks players from alleged pedophile Whitmer. What's the latest on the lawsuit? (1:39:00) Becher urges fans to get Joe Thornton retirement jersey tickets now -- they're selling fast! -- and shares that there will also be a Legends alumni game for Jumbo. (1:40:00)
