Dental assistant pay is one of the most talked-about issues in the industry right now, and for good reason. A surprising 47% of dental assistants feel they aren't being compensated fairly, yet many don't know what fair pay actually looks like in their area. That's where today's guest, Garrett Wilson, CEO of Pay Insights, comes in. His company is working to bring real data on dental assistant salary to the industry so that professionals can understand what they should be earning. In this episode, we take a deep dive into pay in dentistry and why compensation varies so much based on location. Many assume that working in a big city means higher wages, but some rural practices are actually paying more to compete for talent. Understanding these trends is key to making informed career decisions. If you've ever wondered whether your salary in dentistry is where it should be, this episode will give you the insights you need. Beyond location, we also discuss why dental assistant pay isn't just about time served—it's about showing your value, knowing how your practice is performing financially, and backing up your salary request with real data. Many assistants love their jobs, but without proper compensation, job satisfaction can only go so far. That's why it's critical to have open, data-driven conversations about dental assistant salary with employers. If you're thinking about negotiating a raise, or just want to know where you stand in terms of pay in dentistry, don't miss this episode. Garrett shares how his company is crowdsourcing salary in dentistry data to help assistants, hygienists, and office staff advocate for themselves. The best way to understand your worth is by comparing your dental assistant salary to what others in your area are earning. In this illuminating episode of the Fund The People podcast, Geoff Green, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), provides a masterclass on the economic and political power of California's nonprofit sector. Green explains how nonprofits, as the fourth-largest employer in California with 1.2 million workers, are often tasked with addressing the "externalized costs" of both business and government - from poverty wages to environmental degradation - yet are chronically underfunded and undervalued in policy discussions. The conversation delves into the critical challenges facing nonprofit workers, including delayed government payments, inadequate overhead rates, and the fact that 22% of nonprofit workers struggle to make ends meet. Green discusses CalNonprofits' legislative efforts to reform government contracting and shares a promising new Los Angeles initiative that ensures wage equity across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. He emphasizes that for every $20 of public expenditure, there is only $1 of charitable funding - highlighting why nonprofits must build political power to influence how public dollars are spent rather than simply providing services on the cheap. Key Points: Learn why nonprofits are California's fourth-largest employer and how they're transforming their economic power into political influence Discover why "working on the cheap" hurts both nonprofit workers and the communities they serve Get an insider's perspective on recent legislative wins and ongoing battles to reform government contracting with nonprofits Understand the complex relationship between labor unions and nonprofits, and innovative solutions for wage equity across sectors Hear about new research showing how Trump-era tax changes resulted in $20 billion less in charitable giving, and what this means for the sector. Pay equity is a critical factor in attracting and retaining talent in the nonprofit sector, and organizations need to address pay disparities to ensure their long-term sustainability. Our guest today is Sally Loftis, Managing Director of Loftis Partners, who discussed pay equity and the importance of investing in staff. We talk about the challenges faced by nonprofits in attracting and retaining talent, emphasizing the need for competitive pay and benefits that reflect the rising cost of living. We also discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nonprofit workforce and the need for organizations to adapt to the changing needs of their employees. Ongoing feedback mechanisms and a commitment to understanding the systemic needs of employees are essential for creating a workplace culture that is not just equitable, but also sustainable. In this episode of the Friends for Life Podcast, we dive into the U.S. Department of Labor's groundbreaking proposal to phase out 14(c) certificates, a decades-old provision allowing employers to pay workers with disabilities less than minimum wage. This historic move marks a pivotal step toward ending subminimum wage employment and fostering greater economic equity and community inclusion for individuals with disabilities. We explore the legal and policy advancements that have dramatically expanded employment opportunities since the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act and discuss the significant decline in the use of 14(c) certificates over the years. With nearly half of the workers under this model earning $3.50 an hour or less, advocates argue that the time has come to prioritize fair wages and competitive employment. However, the proposed changes are not without controversy. We examine the challenges raised by those who believe sheltered workshops still play a critical role for individuals with severe disabilities requiring highly specialized support. Additionally, we discuss how disability advocacy groups like the Autistic Self Advocacy Network are urging Congress to pass legislation that would ensure a smooth transition to inclusive employment opportunities for all. Join us for an in-depth look at this crucial moment in disability rights history and the ongoing debate about how best to support individuals with disabilities in achieving meaningful, dignified work.

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, to discuss the tentative agreement being negotiated between the NALC and the United States Postal Service (USPS). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine's use of US-made missiles in Russia, the Gaetz report, Trump's cabinet of predators, the DNC, House and Senate politics, US arms to Israel, genocide in Gaza, Musk/Bezos v. NLRB, and the Stop Terror Financing Bill, before watching Senator George Helmy's emotional plea to the UN. Tyler Vasseur then joins, first outlining the breadth of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representation, before walking through the evolution of their ongoing fight for a fair contract, beginning with the expiration of their previous contract on May 20th, 2023 – touching on the major shortcomings of this contract's Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic and rampant inflation – and through over five hundred days of closed-door negotiations with Union Leadership, only for said leadership to announcement a new contract with a wage increase of a meager 1.3%. After diving deeper into the numbers behind this raise, Vasseur parses through the reaction of NALC members to this supposed “victory,” particularly as an anti-union Trump presidency threatens future victories, and how the rank-and-file is organizing to keep the fight for a fair contract going. He, Sam, and Emma also touch on the distinct fight NALC faces working with USPS, and the major problem of making workers, not management, responsible for keeping profits in line, before wrapping up the show by tackling what we can do to help this labor effort from the outside. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma look at the meaningful personal growth shown by folks like Markwayne Mullin and Joe Scarborough over the past year, going from openly denouncing fascists like Matt Gaetz and Donald Trump, respectively, to happily celebrating the future of their relationship to said fascists, before diving deep into the ongoing DNC implosion and what the future of the Party is likely to entail. They also give some updates on Rudy Giuliani's legal woes, talk with Joshua from CT about RFK's insane MAHA agenda and with A-Squared about progressive turnout, and tackle the importance of labeling fascists “fascist,” and Nazis “nazi,” plus, your calls and IMs! Dominic Piscopo's journey in accounting started at a Big Four firm in Canada, where he discovered his firm was paying its employees well below the average in his area. He talks to John Randolph on Episode 52 of CPA Life about how that experience, among others, led to him launching Big 4 Transparency, a platform which tracks salary data in the profession. Although Big 4 Transparency started as a community project, Dom has transformed it into a full-time venture, and he talks about what he feels is his social responsibility to supply this information for free to the community while taking on firm clients who want to understand where their offerings stand in the marketplace. Underscoring the strategic use of timely data to attract and retain talent, Dom talks about how transparent compensation practices can promote employee satisfaction and prevent wage stagnation, benefiting firms of all sizes. Hiring is not easy and deciding what to pay isn't any easier there will, you may think you are offering fair pay for what you are wanting but are you really offering a competitive salary ore are you offering what you can afford to pay? As an employer, you will never pay a fair wage. You have to be competitive to win. If you feel $20 an hour is fair, but someone else can make $24 doing a similar job, you might think you are paying a fair wage, but you're not competitive. Technicians turned self-employed often get stuck on the notion of fairness. Business is not about fairness; it is about competitiveness. You compete for market space, customers, talent—you compete for everything you want to achieve. If you can't be competitive, you can't even play the game, much less win it. Get over this fairness mindset and start being competitive. Fairness is neither quantifiable nor qualifiable; it's a feeling, and you can never compete with everyone's feelings. Treat people with dignity and respect, and do what is right. However, in many cases, you will do what you think is fair and still lose. That is the reality of business and life in general. You're not paying what is fair; you're paying what you can afford to pay. The question is: can you find someone willing to work for what you can afford to pay? #pestcontroltraining #pestcontrol #pestcontrolservice #pest #termitecontrol #pestmanagement #bugs #pestcontrollife #covid #termites #insects #bedbugs #rodentcontrol #pests #fumigation #exterminator #termite #ants #fogging #hunting #rats #pestfree #like #mice #cleaning #pestcontrolmiami #IntegratedPestManagement #IPM Support Us On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/PestgeekpodcastWeb Site: https://pestgeekpodcast.com/category/podcast/Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/pestgeekpodcast/Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pestgeekpodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/pestgeekpodcastLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/franklin-hernandez-49832a55/Linkedin Business Page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/pestgeekpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/pestgeekpodcast/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/pestgeekpodcast/ https://youtube.com/live/_RDEX2E2jvE

And, Brian Katulis, senior fellow and vice president of policy at the Middle East Institute, talks about what the U.S. response to the Iranian-backed militia attack could mean for the wider conflict in the Middle East. Then, new data analysis indicates that voters under 30 hold increasingly polarized political views depending on their gender. Young women have moved sharply to the left in the past decade, while young men tilted more conservative. The Atlantic's Derek Thompson discusses the implications. Plus, 15 years ago, former President Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law to bolster strengthened worker protections against pay discrimination. Equal pay activist Lilly Ledbetter and the National Women's Law Center Fatima Goss Graves, talk about how pay transparency laws and other policies can help close the gender pay gap.
Mark interviews author Eric T. Knight about his writing and about the origin of StoryFair. net a platform that seeks to pay authors the highest royalty of any other third party platform for their audiobook sales. Prior to the interview, Mark reads comments from recent episodes, welcomes new patron Rob Johnson, and shares a word about this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by ScribeCount (affiliate link). Spend less time logging in to multiple platforms and crunching numbers, and more time writing and marketing your books thanks to ScribeCount's handy all-in-one interface. In the interview, Mark and Eric talk about: Eric's youth being way off the grid and in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do, which made reading an important aspect How reading became a gateway for access and connection to the rest of the world Understanding that if he were to keep working at it, that he really could make it in writing some day The long and arduous road of submissions of writing to publishers, finding an agent, and pursuing traditional publishing The fantasy series that Erik had worked on starting back in the 80s Deciding to put one of his fantasy novels up on Kindle just for fun and how that led to a colleague's wife discovering the book and loving it Eric's mindset not changing until the year he decided to submit to a total of 50 agents The power of being able to write the series exactly the way he wanted to A bit about The Chaos Legacy universe and the various different linked series that take place within those books The experience of getting his books into audio and beginning to understand some of the barriers that existed within that realm for authors Beta launching StoryFair in the summer of 2023 and then making the site live in November 2023 How the payment to authors process at StoryFair works Plans for an affiliate program for authors to send readers to this platform The challenge of having to scale up their infrastructure so early in the process due to huge interest from some major players How the StoryFair app is currently only available in the United States (at least for now until some of the legal stuff can be sorted out) How to set up an account, load your book, and when the monthly payments to authors come in The way that a good narrator can bring characters and stories to life in ways that you might not be able to imagine And more... After the interview Mark reflects on that pioneering indie author spirit that leads to providing the market with elements that were previously missing but needed, as well as the value that a library brings to a community. Knight grew up on a working cattle ranch in the desert thirty miles from Wickenburg, Arizona, which at that time was exactly the middle of nowhere. Work, cactus and heat were plentiful, forms of recreation were not. The TV got two channels when it wanted to, and only in the evening after someone hand cranked the balky diesel generator to life. All of which meant that his primary form of escape was reading. At 18 he escaped to Tucson where he attended the University of Arizona. A number of fruitless attempts at productive majors followed, none of which stuck. Discovering he liked writing, the author tried journalism two separate times, but had to drop it when he realized that he had no intention of conducting interviews with actual people but preferred simply making them up. StoryFair is a platform with a mission: Put an end to author exploitation in the audiobook industry There's a problem in the audiobook business. A MAJOR problem. Did you know that when you purchase an audiobook on Audible, Amazon keeps as much as 75% of the cover price of the book? The average price of a major publisher/new release audiobook is in the $24 range. That means Amazon keeps at least $18.00… after fees, it's actually a little bit more. That leaves very little for the publisher, authors, and narrators to divvy up, and ultimately, it means that readers are by and large paying exorbitant audiobook prices to do one thing above all else… pad Amazon's pockets. Axing fair pay agreements will shave up to $10,000 a year off a bus drivers salary according to the Council of Trade Unions. The government plans to get rid of the policy by Christmas, putting an end to half a dozen agreements part way through the process. Among them are the hospitality industry, security officers and commerical cleaners. FPAs allowed unions to negotiate sector wide agreements for some industries.
