UMAW (the United Musicians and Allied Workers) is a labor organization that 'Aims to organize music workers to fight for a more just music industry and to join with other workers in the struggle for a better society.' Their campaigns include Fair Pay at SXSW, #MyMerch (raising awareness of venues taking an unfair cut), Justice at Spotify, and probably most prominently, The Living Wage For Musicians Act sponsored by Rep Rashida Tlaib in the US Congress currently. We talk with a representative from UMAW - Damon Krukowski (a working musician, and a founder of late 80's indie rocker band Galaxie 500) about who UMAW is, what they are fighting for, and how we can all join the fight.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:UMAWGalaxie 500‘Why Sound Matters'Ep 126 - Yancey StricklerAFMSAG-AFTRALiving Wage for Musicians ActClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Adult social care is a vital public service. But this is not reflected in the pay and job quality on offer for England's 1.5 million social care workers. Low-pay, zero-hours contracts, and breaches of labour market rules are worryingly widespread, and have contributed to a longstanding recruitment and retention crisis. The Government has rightly sought to address this by setting up a new Adult Social Care Negotiating Body (ASCNB), that brings together workers and employers to draw up a Fair Pay Agreement (FPA). But there are still big questions about how to turn this worthy ambition into deliverable improvements across the sector. How can the ASCNB be set up quickly while delivering lasting improvements to care workers' conditions? Which workers should be covered by the FPA, and what terms and conditions should be included? And how should the FPA be enforced in a sector currently rife with labour market non-compliance? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person event and interactive webinar to debate and discuss these questions. Following a presentation of the key recommendations from a new Resolution Foundation report, we will hear from leading experts on the key policy questions the Government needs to resolve to ensure the success of the Adult Social Care Negotiating Body and Fair Pay Agreement.
Send us a textPolicy shapes pay packets, childcare, heating bills, and even how we move around our cities. We break down Rachel Reeves' Autumn Budget without jargon, showing how frozen thresholds create fiscal drag, why dividend and property tax hikes shift the balance toward taxing wealth, and how ISA changes nudge under 65s into risk. We look at the upside too, scrapping the two child cap, targeted help on energy bills, a rare freeze on rail fares, and what the new EV per‑mile charge means for the future of funding our roads and the reality of going electric.Power is shifting in entertainment as well. With Paramount Skydance launching a hostile bid for Warner Bros Discovery and outbidding Netflix, we explore what consolidation means for the streaming wars, catalogue control, and your monthly subscriptions. Culture isn't only created; it's distributed, priced, and fenced off, and those decisions ripple through what stories get made and who gets to see them.Safety and dignity are non negotiable. We spotlight the British Transport Police's silent text service 61016 so you can discreetly report harassment on the Tube, and we talk candidly about luxury retail bias versus glossy representation, even as A$AP Rocky fronts Chanel. In the workplace, we share a tactical playbook for handling an aggressive senior colleague: set boundaries, document meticulously, build public advocates, and use policy to protect yourself. We also preview a practical series on starting a UK business the right way trademarks, bookkeeping, HMRC timelines and celebrate Sister Scribble's sell out momentum and what it takes to scale a young brand with intention. If this conversation helps you see your money, career, and safety with clearer eyes, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review telling us the moment that hit home most. Three different times, in three different jobs, I asked for fair pay and I was rejected. I was laughed at. I was told “feel free to quit.” And you know what? I did quit, and I doubled my salary. But that doesn't mean that it was easy to navigate those moments. Send us a textIn a world where your voice can be weaponized against you, knowing when to speak and when to stand firm in silence becomes a crucial skill. This episode unpacks the delicate balance of self-advocacy in both professional settings and wider society, where particularly for Black women, calculated strategy often proves more powerful than reactive responses.Toya introduces her groundbreaking "Three Pillars of Career Protection" framework, a comprehensive system of documentation that transforms how professionals can safeguard their careers and advocate for themselves. Through detailed explanations of the Receipts Folder (positive feedback), Burn Folder (policy breaches and micro-aggressions), and Blueprint Folder (measurable impact), she provides listeners with concrete tools to build leverage, gather evidence, and create armour against workplace injustice.Through powerful personal stories from being clock-watched during bathroom breaks to challenging the adultification of her daughter at nursery – Toya illustrates how systemic issues manifest in daily interactions and offers practical strategies for countering them. She shares how she coached a listener through workplace discrimination, resulting in meaningful change through strategic documentation rather than emotional confrontation. The episode also examines broader societal tensions, from the TFL and Birmingham bin worker strikes to political turmoil within the Labour Party, connecting these external struggles to workplace dynamics. Toya explores Gen Z's shift toward "career minimalism" separating identity from employment while pursuing passion outside work hours – and considers how this adaptation might better serve professionals in an AI-disrupted future. With both urgency and compassion, Toya reminds us that establishing and defending our boundaries isn't optional it's essential. "If you start allowing your boundaries to accommodate shit, you will always be presented with shit sandwiches." Her insights empower listeners to build their professional reputation through consistent excellence while creating systems that ensure this excellence can't be overlooked or undervalued. Remember, advocating for yourself isn't always about being confrontational it's about systematically documenting your value, protecting your boundaries, and ensuring you receive the recognition and compensation you deserve. What will you do this week to strengthen your career protection toolkit?Sponsorships - Email me: hello@toyatalks.com Cc: toyawashington10@gmail.comTikTok: toya_washington Twitter: @toya_w (#ToyaTalksPodcast) Snapchat: @toyawashington Instagram: @toya_washington & @toya_talks www.toyatalks.comhttps://toyatalks.com/ Music (Intro and Outro) Written and created by Nomadic Star Stationary Company - Sistah Scribble Instagram @sistahscribble Website: www.sistahscribble.com
Minimum wage in Oklahoma has been $7.25 since 2009 and for years that's exactly what I paid my assistants. Later, I raised it to $10 an hour… and nothing changed. So why do salon owners feel pressured to pay assistants “well above” minimum wage?In this episode, I'm sharing the pros, cons, and my perspective on paying assistants minimum wage, how to set pay based on your numbers (not guilt), and why your culture and education matter far more than the hourly rate. What You'll Learn:The real pros and cons of minimum wage payHow to calculate what your salon can actually affordWhy assistants don't choose salons based on $1–$4/hour differencesSimple ways assistants can earn more beyond base payMy POV: pay what's sustainable and release the guiltKey TakeawayAssistants don't join your team for a paycheck, they join for your leadership, culture, and training. Send us a textThe Transport for London strikes have sparked heated debate, but before rushing to judgment, we need to examine why workers feel forced to take such actions. When peaceful protest options are systematically limited and negotiations fail, strikes become the necessary tool for demanding fair treatment. These workers form the backbone of our infrastructure – shouldn't their compensation reflect that essential role? This week I share a conversation with a colleague that exposed a £5K bonus disparity despite my heavier workload and responsibilities. The experience highlights how secrecy around compensation creates fertile ground for favoritism and discrimination to flourish unchallenged. What happens when we start having these uncomfortable but necessary conversations about pay transparency? I'm taking you behind the scenes of how I'm navigating this situation strategically rather than emotionally. The most liberating concept I've encountered recently comes from Stephanie Tyler's article "The Quiet Thrill of Not Being for Everyone." How many of us have spent years performing versions of ourselves, carefully packaging our truths to be palatable to others? This continuous shape-shifting amounts to "a long-form apology for who you are." The freedom that comes from embracing authenticity – even when it means not everyone will like you – represents a profound shift in how we navigate our professional and personal lives. From Angela Rayner's resignation and the leadership lessons it provides, to disappointments with Apple's innovation, to Cardi B's courtroom victory against frivolous claims – each story offers insights into standing your ground and protecting what matters. I also introduce the concept of "job hugging" and why protecting your business ideas legally has never been more important.Referenced Article:The Quiet Thrill of Not Being For Everyonehttps://www.wildbarethoughts.com/p/the-quiet-thrill-of-not-being-forThe Toya Talks podcast is evolving with a new logo, consistent Wednesday episodes, and increased social media presence. Dental assistant pay is one of the most talked-about issues in the industry right now, and for good reason. A surprising 47% of dental assistants feel they aren't being compensated fairly, yet many don't know what fair pay actually looks like in their area. That's where today's guest, Garrett Wilson, CEO of Pay Insights, comes in. His company is working to bring real data on dental assistant salary to the industry so that professionals can understand what they should be earning. In this episode, we take a deep dive into pay in dentistry and why compensation varies so much based on location. Many assume that working in a big city means higher wages, but some rural practices are actually paying more to compete for talent. Understanding these trends is key to making informed career decisions. If you've ever wondered whether your salary in dentistry is where it should be, this episode will give you the insights you need. Beyond location, we also discuss why dental assistant pay isn't just about time served—it's about showing your value, knowing how your practice is performing financially, and backing up your salary request with real data. Many assistants love their jobs, but without proper compensation, job satisfaction can only go so far. That's why it's critical to have open, data-driven conversations about dental assistant salary with employers. If you're thinking about negotiating a raise, or just want to know where you stand in terms of pay in dentistry, don't miss this episode. Garrett shares how his company is crowdsourcing salary in dentistry data to help assistants, hygienists, and office staff advocate for themselves. The best way to understand your worth is by comparing your dental assistant salary to what others in your area are earning. A conversation with Charlotte Pineda and Dr. Joe Cheng
In this illuminating episode of the Fund The People podcast, Geoff Green, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), provides a masterclass on the economic and political power of California's nonprofit sector. Green explains how nonprofits, as the fourth-largest employer in California with 1.2 million workers, are often tasked with addressing the "externalized costs" of both business and government - from poverty wages to environmental degradation - yet are chronically underfunded and undervalued in policy discussions. The conversation delves into the critical challenges facing nonprofit workers, including delayed government payments, inadequate overhead rates, and the fact that 22% of nonprofit workers struggle to make ends meet. Green discusses CalNonprofits' legislative efforts to reform government contracting and shares a promising new Los Angeles initiative that ensures wage equity across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. He emphasizes that for every $20 of public expenditure, there is only $1 of charitable funding - highlighting why nonprofits must build political power to influence how public dollars are spent rather than simply providing services on the cheap. Key Points: Learn why nonprofits are California's fourth-largest employer and how they're transforming their economic power into political influence Discover why "working on the cheap" hurts both nonprofit workers and the communities they serve Get an insider's perspective on recent legislative wins and ongoing battles to reform government contracting with nonprofits Understand the complex relationship between labor unions and nonprofits, and innovative solutions for wage equity across sectors Hear about new research showing how Trump-era tax changes resulted in $20 billion less in charitable giving, and what this means for the sector. Pay equity is a critical factor in attracting and retaining talent in the nonprofit sector, and organizations need to address pay disparities to ensure their long-term sustainability. Our guest today is Sally Loftis, Managing Director of Loftis Partners, who discussed pay equity and the importance of investing in staff. We talk about the challenges faced by nonprofits in attracting and retaining talent, emphasizing the need for competitive pay and benefits that reflect the rising cost of living. We also discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nonprofit workforce and the need for organizations to adapt to the changing needs of their employees. Ongoing feedback mechanisms and a commitment to understanding the systemic needs of employees are essential for creating a workplace culture that is not just equitable, but also sustainable. In this episode of the Friends for Life Podcast, we dive into the U.S. Department of Labor's groundbreaking proposal to phase out 14(c) certificates, a decades-old provision allowing employers to pay workers with disabilities less than minimum wage. This historic move marks a pivotal step toward ending subminimum wage employment and fostering greater economic equity and community inclusion for individuals with disabilities. We explore the legal and policy advancements that have dramatically expanded employment opportunities since the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act and discuss the significant decline in the use of 14(c) certificates over the years. With nearly half of the workers under this model earning $3.50 an hour or less, advocates argue that the time has come to prioritize fair wages and competitive employment. However, the proposed changes are not without controversy. We examine the challenges raised by those who believe sheltered workshops still play a critical role for individuals with severe disabilities requiring highly specialized support. Additionally, we discuss how disability advocacy groups like the Autistic Self Advocacy Network are urging Congress to pass legislation that would ensure a smooth transition to inclusive employment opportunities for all. Join us for an in-depth look at this crucial moment in disability rights history and the ongoing debate about how best to support individuals with disabilities in achieving meaningful, dignified work.
It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, to discuss the tentative agreement being negotiated between the NALC and the United States Postal Service (USPS). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine's use of US-made missiles in Russia, the Gaetz report, Trump's cabinet of predators, the DNC, House and Senate politics, US arms to Israel, genocide in Gaza, Musk/Bezos v. NLRB, and the Stop Terror Financing Bill, before watching Senator George Helmy's emotional plea to the UN. Tyler Vasseur then joins, first outlining the breadth of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representation, before walking through the evolution of their ongoing fight for a fair contract, beginning with the expiration of their previous contract on May 20th, 2023 – touching on the major shortcomings of this contract's Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic and rampant inflation – and through over five hundred days of closed-door negotiations with Union Leadership, only for said leadership to announcement a new contract with a wage increase of a meager 1.3%. After diving deeper into the numbers behind this raise, Vasseur parses through the reaction of NALC members to this supposed “victory,” particularly as an anti-union Trump presidency threatens future victories, and how the rank-and-file is organizing to keep the fight for a fair contract going. He, Sam, and Emma also touch on the distinct fight NALC faces working with USPS, and the major problem of making workers, not management, responsible for keeping profits in line, before wrapping up the show by tackling what we can do to help this labor effort from the outside. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma look at the meaningful personal growth shown by folks like Markwayne Mullin and Joe Scarborough over the past year, going from openly denouncing fascists like Matt Gaetz and Donald Trump, respectively, to happily celebrating the future of their relationship to said fascists, before diving deep into the ongoing DNC implosion and what the future of the Party is likely to entail. They also give some updates on Rudy Giuliani's legal woes, talk with Joshua from CT about RFK's insane MAHA agenda and with A-Squared about progressive turnout, and tackle the importance of labeling fascists “fascist,” and Nazis “nazi,” plus, your calls and IMs! Dominic Piscopo's journey in accounting started at a Big Four firm in Canada, where he discovered his firm was paying its employees well below the average in his area. He talks to John Randolph on Episode 52 of CPA Life about how that experience, among others, led to him launching Big 4 Transparency, a platform which tracks salary data in the profession. Although Big 4 Transparency started as a community project, Dom has transformed it into a full-time venture, and he talks about what he feels is his social responsibility to supply this information for free to the community while taking on firm clients who want to understand where their offerings stand in the marketplace. Underscoring the strategic use of timely data to attract and retain talent, Dom talks about how transparent compensation practices can promote employee satisfaction and prevent wage stagnation, benefiting firms of all sizes. Hiring is not easy and deciding what to pay isn't any easier there will, you may think you are offering fair pay for what you are wanting but are you really offering a competitive salary ore are you offering what you can afford to pay? As an employer, you will never pay a fair wage. You have to be competitive to win. If you feel $20 an hour is fair, but someone else can make $24 doing a similar job, you might think you are paying a fair wage, but you're not competitive. Technicians turned self-employed often get stuck on the notion of fairness. Business is not about fairness; it is about competitiveness. You compete for market space, customers, talent—you compete for everything you want to achieve. If you can't be competitive, you can't even play the game, much less win it. Get over this fairness mindset and start being competitive. Fairness is neither quantifiable nor qualifiable; it's a feeling, and you can never compete with everyone's feelings. Treat people with dignity and respect, and do what is right. However, in many cases, you will do what you think is fair and still lose. That is the reality of business and life in general. You're not paying what is fair; you're paying what you can afford to pay. The question is: can you find someone willing to work for what you can afford to pay? #pestcontroltraining #pestcontrol #pestcontrolservice #pest #termitecontrol #pestmanagement #bugs #pestcontrollife #covid #termites #insects #bedbugs #rodentcontrol #pests #fumigation #exterminator #termite #ants #fogging #hunting #rats #pestfree #like #mice #cleaning #pestcontrolmiami #IntegratedPestManagement #IPM Support Us On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/PestgeekpodcastWeb Site: https://pestgeekpodcast.com/category/podcast/Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/pestgeekpodcast/Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pestgeekpodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/pestgeekpodcastLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/franklin-hernandez-49832a55/Linkedin Business Page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/pestgeekpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/pestgeekpodcast/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/pestgeekpodcast/ https://youtube.com/live/_RDEX2E2jvE
